Dear Friends, As we began work on the 5th edition of Dressed Up magazine, I began thinking about the upcoming season, about the future. How fascinating it is to witness how fast the world turns around, and even more so the fashion world. Every six months designers from across the globe come together in Paris, Milan and New York to present their latest collections inspired by artistic, social, cultural and personal discovery. In the following pages we invite you to experience a taste of their passion, which today stands at an exciting crossroads of strict minimalism and a revival of luxurious statement dressing. We at Princess are proud to be able to guide you through our selection of the finest of these fashions, by offering you personal advice in our boutiques.
In between shooting our favourite looks of the season, we spoke with Natan’s Edouard Vermeulen, who has crafted a gown out of recycled fabrics from Burkina Faso; and British designer Matthew Williamson who shared his inspirations of modern art and exotic travel with us. Antwerp-based artist Luc Tuymans posed for us in his studio, and the Weekend Knack’s editor Trui Moerkerke offers an insightful perspective on modern lifestyles in a classy Q&A. As the temperature drops, take Dressed Up #5 as your guide for an action-packed winter - with inspiring reads and our style tips to take you from the ski slopes to the dance floor (and everywhere in between). I hope you enjoy our take on the season and our largest issue to date! Frédéric
P.S. An exciting release alongside this issue is the launch of the Renaissance smartphone application - the first of it’s kind in Belgium. The luxuriously soft barrel-shaped design is adorned with a base of studs, for an everyday statement that is as hardwearing as it is hardcore street style. Exclusively at RENAISSANCE & SKETCH

PRINCESS presents MAX MARA For Autumn Winter 2011-12, Max Mara has christened Katie Holmes as their ‘Face of the Future’ - a prestigious prize given to an actress who is experiencing a turning point in her film career and contributions to the community at large, offered in collaboration with the non-profit organisation ‘Women in Film’. The star was spotted front row at Max Mara’s Milan show in March, where the iconic Italian house paraded svelte coats and tailoring in plaid fabrics, and shaggy alpaca knits referenced the British Highlands. Miss Holmes arrived in a signature Max Mara camel coat, shrugging it off to reveal a mocha satin jumpsuit beneath. Surely a winning match of high fashion and star power, as Holmes slips into her role as Jackie Kennedy in the new mini-series The Kennedys, airing this year. Available at PRINCESS
FTC CASHMERE FTC stands for “Fair Trade Cashmere”, a coveted cashmere knitwear line that promises superior quality with ethically sound processes. Since 2003, the Swiss-based duo Jutta and Andreas Knezovic have pioneered sustainable methods in cashmere production, opting against the culture of exploitation to realise joint projects with farmers and staff. The results of their mission are six knitted cashmere collections annually, and whether it’s beautifully soft pullovers, scarves, jackets, capes, accessories or hats the gentle feel and velvety smoothness combined with a social conscience make FTC first choice. Available at PRINCESS, PRINCESS BLUE, RENAISSANCE & SKETCH 8
X marks the spot / CLOSED CLOSED began as an Italian workwear brand in the 1970s, when it quickly captured the market with a new design approach to denim jeans. With research into military garments and postal worker’s uniforms, CLOSED developed the first 27-piece denim and launched their iconic ‘X’ pocket that is still a signature of their mens and womens ranges today. The brand was also recognised in the early years for their ‘stone-wash’ technique and continue to develop innovative dyeing techniques today – supporting a passion for authentic casual clothes with a worn-in comfort. Complimenting the CLOSED vision of innovation and creative youth, ‘The X’ campaign was launched in Fall Winter 2010, celebrating a group of ten pioneering young people in cities around the world. Every season CLOSED selects a fresh team of talent from across the creative arts and sciences, and invites them to share their travels and experiences. A GPS-tracked Leica camera and a linked blog let us follow these inspiring characters and their extraordinary lives - be they making art in Moscow or throwing parties in Milan, PR’ing in Paris or dancing ballet in Frankfurt. Available at PRINCESS BLUE & RENAISSANCE
The latest crop / TRUE NYC Channeling the downtown cool of New York City through the eyes of an Italian designer, True NYC has perfected the ‘peg-leg’ – creating cropped trousers and jeans in a slim, comfortable fit in softly washed fabrics like chambray, gabardine, velvet and denim. Available at PRINCESS & PRINCESS BLUE
The tricky tailor / Ehud Amsterdam-based menswear designer Joseph Ehud brings a myriad of cultural contrasts to his smartly-tailored collection, having grown up in New Zealand and studied at London’s Central St Martins. Uniforms as cultural identifiers are the starting point for his elegant ready-to-wear wardrobe, which he now shows on the Paris runway. For Fall 2011, he punctuated a sober collection of monochrome suiting with punches of wine and vermillion reds, which were particularly dramatic in rubberized fabrics reminiscent of patent leather. Exclusively at RENAISSANCE
The couture cycle / Eva Zingoni After six years designing at Balenciaga, Eva Zingoni established her own label in 2008 to create sustainable couture, made in France from recycled materials. Today her limited edition pieces are cut from surplus materials from Parisian fashion houses, in unique fabrics with special finishes that evoke individual stories. Zingoni’s style leans towards clean lines, “egg” shapes and unstructured forms, which translates through an edgy feminine aesthetic in dresses, tunics, blouses and fluid jackets. Exclusively at RENAISSANCE & SKETCH
A woven whimsy / M Missoni Missoni holds its own amongst the archives of 20th century fashion, with their signature crocheted knitwear becoming an inimitable statement of luxurious Italian style. Since 1998, M Missoni have chanelled the bohemian spirit of the brand into easy-to-wear pieces that uphold the distinctive design heritage of the main line. For Autumn Winter 2011-12, M Missoni proposes a contrast of delicate, lacey crochet with chunky knitted cardigans and parkas in geometric tribal patterns. An earthy colour palette is popped with sulfur yellow and brick orange, with an unexpected touch of turquoise. Available at PRINCESS 10
Bike leathers / DROMe DROMe offer a glamorous dose of Italian leather for the cooler months, proposing wild texture and bold shapes for men and women. Long lines and high funnel necks create a sleek shape for women in fur and sleeveless leather styles, with wide collars or bikers in washed leathers for the boys. A rugged sense of elegance allows an easy transition from daytime to evening. Available at RENAISSANCE & SKETCH
Parisian rehash / AVHASHBY Ann ValÉrie Hash The designer Ann Valerie Hash is a celebrated fixture on the prét-à-porter and couture catwalks, known for her feminine creations that channel an inimitable Parisian chic. She now introduces AVHASHBY Ann Valerie Hash, a diffusion line that builds upon the original DNA of the brand with a gentle, accessible touch. The choice of fabrics focuses on jersey, cotton and chiffon while the colours remain symbolic of the brand and play with neutral tones. It’s uptown femininity with an urban, downtown spin. Available at RENAISSANCE & SKETCH
Bears, berries and BEEN / BEEN BY D’HEYGERE A been is a leg, but BEEN are leggings, by Antwerp academy graduate Stephanie d’Heygere - a young Belgian designer who is printing up a fruity storm across stretchy zipped leggings and bodies, gloves and skirts. This season she’s picked apple, raspberry and bark prints as well as a furry teddybear fabric, to brighten the gloomy winter days in shades of minty green, citrus yellow, neon berry and a honey brown. “I’m lucky enough that the high profile girls that I’m often associated with are actually close friends of mine who genuinely love wearing my clothes.” British designer Matthew Williamson has divined a unique aesthetic that has captured the bohemian spirit of women the world over, with his breathtakingly modern designs that exude a carefree, sensual energy. Dressed Up chats with Matthew about travel, the seasons, his inspirations and the creative process. For Fall Winter 11-12, you took inspiration from the mirrored

Over the past three decades, the Belgian designer has crafted a vision of contemporary purity at the house of NATAN, enriched by his passion for design and the arts.
Vermeulen
Extending his creative reach across all facets of the brand, Vermeulen continues to uphold their tradition of quality and timelessness, while pushing the company into the future. In a socially conscious move, the designer has just announced NATAN’s involvement in the ‘Good Planet’ project launching this October - for which he has designed and produced an evening dress from recycled plastic textiles woven in Burkina Faso.
How does it feel to be involved in the ‘Good Planet’ project for Africa? I was very excited to participate in what I believe is a project that will raise awareness. I really liked integrating our art, (the fashion), so often considered as a superficial world, in this huge project. Did this project influence your spirit for the season? Yes, the raw materials, very dark, very pure, almost imperfect and nearly primitive, inspired me deeply especially for lovely evening clothes. What are your inspirations for Autumn Winter 11-12? Probably a contrast of raw and noble materials, a combination of bright and more sober colours. Sometimes I like to play with clear-cut ideas, but then again I also enjoy playing with some unlikely combinations. What scent do you wear? Eau de toilette by LOEWE, a Spanish fragrance.
What kind of music have you been listening to in the studio recently? I like music as long as it’s melodious because I’m not interested in music when it makes noise for the case of making noise - in that case, I prefer the silence. I like lounge music, as it relaxes me. Soft background music inspires me and allows me to escape. Where is your ideal winter travel destination? Will you escape the cold or embrace it? When winter is here, in Brussels, if it’s harsh and melan-
cholic, I prefer to escape to a country that contrasts with this disheartening, gray, rainy and sad weather…In that case I prefer the sun. What I do really enjoy is travelling abroad to a cold and sunny place with beautiful snow-covered mountain peaks. Are there any new spots you’d like to recommend, to wine and dine in Belgium? I regularly have my breakfast or lunch at “Gaudron” at the Place Brugmann (Brussels). This is a part of my day I really enjoy, a moment where I find some time to disconnect. I love to dine at “Odette en ville” in the evenings. Your love of interior design is well documented, but what interests you in the worlds of theatre, film and dance? What stimulates your mind outside of fashion? Every form of art interests me and attracts me - contemporary opera, painting, theatre, choreography, ballet, poetry, etc. However, I feel just as inspired by little every day things as I do by art. I never stop observing, feeling, smelling… I am constantly inspired by life itself, with moments of melancholy or euphoria and joy, anything can lead me to a desire to create.

It was these jacquard fabrics that became the starting point for his Beauty collection for the season, which Mr. Armani described as “a weave of fine silken threads subtly interwoven”. Three ‘Eye Quator’ shadow palettes are embossed with the grain of the fabrics and explore the colours of the season; from deep jade, violet and pearl grey (right) to Armani signatures like tobacco, greige and a soft blue grey. “A smokey eye is not a colour, it’s a technique”. Blend darker shades across the eyelashes on the moving lid and lighter tones to the edge of the eyelid, to create a subtle gradient of colour. Introducing products with a pearl finish to your beauty regime will offer a subtle lightness to your skin without excessive shine, reducing the appearance of ageing to lift pale winter skin. Applying a tiny dab of the Regenessence Eye Contour crème across the lips before applying your lipstick will extend your colour for hours longer.
Untitled + L’Eau by Maison Martin Margiela For the first scent from the legendary Maison Martin Margiela, they created a ‘green flash’ – an olfactory equivalent and translation of the blank canvas and cleansing visual signature ‘white’ of the house. Clean, fresh and astringent, it opens with notes of incense, bitter orange and box green, developing with time as the base notes settle into a deeper aroma of sweet jasmine and musky cedar. Launched this summer, Untitled L’Eau is a lighter option - an aromatic citrus with top notes of mandarin orange and amalfi lemon, settling into African orange flower and mint. Both perfumes are exquisitely packaged in glass flaçons hand-dipped in white paint – a personal touch that ensures this fragrance doubles as the perfect gift or a selfish pleasure. Available at Renaissance & Sketch USLU Airlines × Loco Dice The beauty buffs at USLU Airlines have just released the latest in their cult nailpolish collaboration ‘the colour of sound’ – pairing fresh tones with even fresher tunes from International DJs. ‘DUS – Düsseldorf ’ by Loco Dice is a punchy lilac named after the globe-hopping DJ’s hometown.
