BLACK CARPET by Paule Ka
JIL SANDER
viktor & rolf
In it’s very first season instores, French fashion label Paule Ka’s new collection Black Carpet recalls the haute couture designs seen on the red carpets of Hollywood and at Cannes.
Jil Sander Navy is launched for 2011 as a refined, casual addition to the Jil Sander house as defined by its director, the Belgian designer Raf Simons, since 2005.
Quirky dutchmen Viktor Horsting & Rolf Snoeren studied at the Arnhem Academy, receiving praise for their collection at Hyères in 1993 and building international recognition with their artistic catwalk shows in Paris. Their hyperexaggerated & often comical runway offerings translate to a luxe, graphic style with bold ruffles & tuxedo detailing, always signed off with their signature waxsealed emblem.
Designer Serge Cajfinger has constructed a capsule of refined eveningwear that evokes a glamorous bygone era, in a colour palette dominated by black, white and nudes, and fabrics such as flowing jersey, organza and silk. Layered ruffles, pillowy bows and contrast panels will ensure a dramatic entrance to even the most sophisticated cocktail or gala. Exclusively available at Princess Antwerp
Crisp trenchcoats and light shirting staples are paired with easy knitwear and jerseys in superior fabrics, for a light and unconstructed interpretation of Jil’s signature minimalist dressing. Available at Renaissance Sketch
Experimenting with theatrical volumes & classical tailoring, Viktor & Rolf distort our perception of garments & traditional construction. Available at Renaissance Sketch

if six was nine L.G.B.
angelos frentzos
If Six Was Nine & L.G.B. (stands for Le Grand Blue) are 2 Japanese brands by the same designer of which very little is known. They like to keep things a little secretive, don’t allow their collections to be photographed for magazines and only allow their clothes to be sold in select stores. Somehow, the secrecy has only added to the cult, as they are now much sought-after labels by the fashion-crowd. If Six Was Nine features tons of wild leggings, t-shirts and tops in bright prints, whereas L.B.G. is all about soft Japanese cottons, jerseys and denims.
Greek designer Angelos Frentzos contrasts a goddesslike femininity with rough, modern urbanity whether it is in delicate studded details, lashings of skull&bone-prints, or the kick of a ballerina’s tutu skirt. Glamour is tinged with a gothic darkness and an undeniable flair for theatrics. No wilting flowers here.

The range offers beautifully finished mens and womens styles in jersey, knits and woven fabrics - in a subtle, earthy colour palette allows effortless blending into your daily wardrobe. Exclusively available in Belgium at Renaissance

trift
by Judith Seng
Your series ‘Trift’ seems to suggest the force of industry & commerce upon the natural form of a tree trunk. What is your message within these abstract forms? I am not sure if I have a message, I consider them more as a materialized research about current aesthetics and values that come along with them. I was interested in the coexistence of increasing not only visual perfection and refinement, but at the same time being surrounded by daily pictures of destruction and decay by men and nature. Thus I was experimenting how to bring these contradicting qualities in one interesting surface, which tells me something new and maybe challenging about these aesthetics and our fears or favours. Can you explain the process you have undertaken to produce ‘Trift’? Material-wise I was experimenting with different woods and treatments such as brushing, sanding and different chemical bleaching to partly destroy the wood and at the same time find wood that is dry enough to be painted. In such dimensions, drying is a very long lasting process of 12 weeks minimum which cannot be speeded up, because the material has its ‘own mind’.

Does the colour palette add further meaning to the works? They are somewhat violent colours, not at all organic like the raw materials. I was interested in the beauty of irrational contrast or contradictions. In that sense you could say these colours are confronted violently with the natural (and thus unique) character of the single piece of wood. As with much of your portfolio, ‘Trift’ blurs the boundaries between art and industrial design. Do you create with functionality as an element of your concept, or purely aesthetic? How do you see ‘Trift’ integrating into people’s lives? I am interested in everyday objects and materials as expressions and facilitators of socio-cultural processes and underlying values. I like to work at the border of what is perceived as being functional or dysfunctional, because I like the idea to invite use of an object while at the same time challenging the way how it will be used, instead of confirming the status quo of daily life processes. In that sense my objects can be used by people, both mentally and physically. How do you see your work interacting with the world of fashion? I am generally very interested in working at traditional borders of disciplines, but I had no special relation to fashion in mind with these pieces. I asked my friend what he thinks about the relation to the fashion world and he spontaneously said: bold colours, non-conformity, playful use of materials.
Super successful young label Peter Pilotto consists of half - Austrian, half - Italian Peter Pilotto and half - Belgian, half - Peruvian Christopher De Vos. The boys met whilst studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and have quickly become one of the hottest brands around. We are proud to have supported Peter Pilotto from the very beginning, as Princess Blue was the first store in Belgium to stock them, now you’ll find the label in Renaissance and Sketch. As they are busy preparing for their next collection, we stole 5 minutes of their invaluable time to chat about their inspirations, working as a team and Antwerp. You both met whilst studying here in Antwerp, how important is the city still to you? Antwerp will always give us such fun memories! We spent all of our studies there at the academy. There was blood, sweat and tears! Who is the Peter Pilotto woman? We don’t have a particular woman in mind but we do think of our dear friends when we design the collection. Akiko, Anouck, Nathalie and Carla are always so inspiring. What inspired your current collection? Peter Pilotto Spring Summer 2011 prints were inspired by “The Stone Masters”, a group of Californian 70’s rock climbers and integrating the theme of speed and movement. How does designing as a duo work? Do you each have set roles? We design and decide everything together. However we do split roles within the team. It is not always easy but we always seem to get it right in the end. You’ re mainly based and show in London, why London? Do you see that changing in the future? London has the right energy, and we had invaluable support to start up a label. The British fashion council, press and London stockists have all been very supportive since the very beginning. Young designers need support. We are happy in London and will continue to show here.

WOUTERS EN HENDRIX
GOLDEN CHIX
n°4
New York jewellery designer Eddie Borgo is already somewhat of a cult figure in fashion circles. His punk-inspired pieces have already graced the arms, necks and fingers of about everyone who’s cool. In just a few years he’s already collaborated with labels like Proenza Schouler, Phillip Lim and Marchesa.
W&H is the Belgian popular jewellery brand by Katrin Wouters and Karen Hendrix who started working together after meeting at the famous Royal Academy of Fine Arts in their hometown of Antwerp 25 years ago. The handmade “My Favourites” - in silver & goldplated - has a couture-style finish (without the pricetag) and there’s often an element of humour in the collections.
Golden Chix is the new jewellery label by South Korean - born Soonmi Kim, who learned her craft at the famous Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Her designs are playful and quirky, often taking inspiration from everyday and natural items, like pricetags, paint splashes, wishbones or even shark’s teeth. She uses mostly classic materials like silver or gold, making the pieces look timeless, despite their often eccentric subjects.
N°4 is an edgy new American high performance hair and skincare range. The 4 stands for the 4 different steps it takes for perfect hair and skin, it’s as simple as that. The 4 steps to perfection: Essential, the basic shampoo for cleaning the hair. Hydrate is for moisturizing and replenishing the hair and skin with the necessary vitamins. Volume does exactly what it says and Style is all about the finishing touches. The products are packaged in beautiful yet simple bottles. A visual and sensory treat!

Christophe COPPENS is having a great year. Not only is he c e l e brati n g
20 years...
You’re celebrating 20 years of Christophe Coppens. What does that mean for you personally? How are you celebrating this special year? 20 years is a lot and nothing at the same time. Too early for a retrospective exhibition and too much to just let it pass by. We have organised a small exhibition together with Pierre Bergé Brussels, printed a catalogue and held an auction of some prototypes and new work. A brief but intense moment, just the way I like it. Today I am more exited than ever about the next 20 years, looking back is not interesting for me. It’s today and tomorrow that counts. A lot of people are still scared of wearing hats, would only wear them at weddings, etc. Do you agree a hat is only for a special occasion? You have hats and you have hats. When you do have a special occasion, have fun, and go all the way, life is too short not to have fun. On the other hand hats can be protective, in summer against the sun, in winter against the cold. All you need is some good advise, regarding your face, build and choose the right hat for the right occasion; you want people to look at you, not only at the hat.
...in the business,
but he was just officially named a
Royal Warrant Holder of the Court of Belgium, acknowledging his years of supplying hats to the royal family. The salon in Princess Antwerp has now been opened for a year to great acclaim, so we check in with the designer on how things are going...
Do you think Belgians are a little intimidated by wearing hats, fascinators, etc? And why? In the UK, for example, it seems much more common to do so. The UK has an amazing culture to wear hats for every occasion, we don’t. But we are getting there, step by step. Do you have any style tips for someone who has never worn a hat before – whatever the occasion? Choose a hat that underlines what is already present in your personality; a hat should make you feel more confident, more mysterious… Your salon in Princess is now nearly a year old, are you happy about how this special Co-operation has been going so far? Do you feel the customers are connecting with your brand in the Princess salon? It is great to be present in Antwerp, and wonderful to be part of a house like Princess, a family company I can relate too. Also the staff selling my collection is worth gold. They are doing a very good job. It is so important to guide the customer to the perfect hat!

Sundek has carried its innovative Californian beachwear across the globe since the 1940s, and today teams up with British menswear designer Neil Barrett for this capsule collection featuring khaki camo prints and fake denim.
Paris-based American designer Rick Owens has garnered nothing less than a cult following for his signature brand of grunge & glamour, and channels this aesthetic into DRKSHDW - interpreting denim and jersey with an elegant touch. Expect dramatic hooded sweatshirts, heavy waxed denims, fine layering t-shirts and devilishly perverted artist prints.

Been by D’Heygere is the brand new legging line by Belgian designer Stephanie D’Heygere. After graduating from the famous Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Stephanie traveled the world to gain experience with some of the world’s biggest names in fashion, like Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Zac Posen, Jeremy Scott, Peter Jensen and Lanvin. Now she’s spreading her wings and learning to fly on her own with a bright, colourful line of leggings, focusing on enlarged fruit prints. A little introduction with one of the hottest new kids on the block.
What was your inspiration behind your very first collection? A hot, hot tropical summer! What made you choose to do a legging line? Leggings are my favourite garment, it is so easy to wear and to combine with other items. Because of its stretchy nature, it also fits everyone. A real essential in every girl’s wardrobe! What makes Been by D’heygere different? Well, because I only wear leggings, I know exactly what works and what doesn’t on a leg. The prints are put on the pattern in a way that it makes the leg look good. We also focused a lot on individuality: every legging (and its packaging) is stamped by hand – so there are no itchy labels – and is numbered. The packaging is really special too. Been is just a fun brand. Are you doing anything special for your collaboration with Renaissance? Yes, we’ve made a special edition for Renaissance: black zippers and black elastic, this won’t be found anywhere else. They also come with a special stamp. Over Easter there will be a window installation too, first at Sketch, later at Renaissance. Where will we see Been by D’heygere in 5 years’ time? I would like to elaborate the collection and hopefully collaborate with other brands. Maybe there will be shoes, handbags… who knows! Who would you like to see wearing Been? All my
fRiEnDs! :)
