The designer Olivier Theyskens emerged as the dark horse of 90s Belgian fashion and the poster boy for a generation of glamour. Studying at La Cambre in Brussels, his early work fused heroin-chic with a decadent dose of Victoriana – they labelled the painstaking handwork ‘grunge couture’ – and his dark designs laced, sliced and fishtailed their way around the feminine form in luxurious layers. After wooing Paris with his elegant demi-couture touch at the houses of Rochas and later Nina Ricci, Theyskens was appointed creative director of the American label Theory in 2010. His drastic move from the salons of Parisian pret-a-porter to the fast-paced New York scene was embraced by the fashion elite, and Theyskens’ influence quickly transformed the desirable basics of Theory into a cult phenomenon. The man himself, blessed with a mane of black hair, cat-like eyes and a bubbly persona, was quickly installed as a darling of the New York party set, amidst the very social butterflies lusting for his designs. And who now (incidentally) inspire them.

8

New York stole the heart of a Belgian boy Showing four collections a year in the city that never sleeps, Theysken’s Theory (as it’s known) has defined a street-wise sensibility that applies Olivier’s craft to a minimal framework, distilling his deft eye for detail into key wardrobe pieces for urban living. For Spring Summer 2012, the collection is dictated by a woman’s natural instinct to combine shapes and fabrics, executed with Theysken’s intuitive touch. The blazer remains one of his signatures, cut with an iconic notched lapel at the nape of the neck. Floaty sundresses in pale grey and white are

fitted with dropped pockets and a camisole is slit up the hipbone, worn with a peg trouser finished with a double waistband. Theyskens mused that “the simplicity of American sportswear has definitely influenced the collection”, a sentence that perhaps would never have passed his lips prior to his transatlantic relocation over a year before. “I live in the West Village because I love that I am able to walk to the studio. I adore the neighborhood, it’s not very agitated, and it has a little bit of the feel of a European village with old history.” Discover the Theory collection for Spring Summer 2012 now at Renaissance and Sketch.

SUNDEK

R

Thrill seekers Riding the Sundek Wave

Since the 1940s, SUNDEK has channeled the essence of California cool into vibrant and durable board shorts. Through a constant evolution of technology and fashion, the brand’s influence in surf culture through the 60s and 70s is undeniable – from velcro details to doubleply fabrications and the grooviest prints around. Dressed Up chats to SUNDEK’s Lorenzo Pacini to discover more about this iconic brand. What has defined SUNDEK as such a key name in boardshorts?

SUNDEK was one of the very first companies to design swimwear specifically for the sport of surfing and pioneered a Velcro fly closure - the perfect detail for watersports in place of buttons or a zipper. How do you feel SUNDEK injects a sense of Italian style into this iconic American product?

Over the past few decades, the SUNDEK collection has been designed in Italy with the influence of the famous Italian fashion industry and its beautiful fabrics, which have added impeccable quality and a flair for design to the collection of this iconic brand. Tell us about the fabrics you use. What gives SUNDEK the edge over other brands?

The famous M502 boardshort is made of extra strong two-ply nylon taffeta, and the use of double and triple stitching makes these shorts very durable in the water. Over the years SUNDEK shorts weather so well, gaining appeal the more that you wear them.

24

The SUNDEK sunrise logo is so iconic. Can you tell us who designed it and when? What does it signify for the brand?

The logo was designed in 1958 by Stuart Levin, the founder of SUNDEK. It signifies a sun rising over a deck - a wonderful image for all fans of the beach and the surf. Who do you think are the icons of modern surfing today?

Our icons are not surfers but all people that live their life like surfers. Orlando Bloom, Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Gerard Butler are just some of the celebrities who wear SUNDEK. Can you tell us about your collaboration with the designer Neil Barrett?

In 2010 we began our special project in collaboration with the famous British designer Neil Barrett known for his sober colours and minimalist style. The collection is aimed at the same clientele

and high-end stores that know and love this designer. What are the key styles for Spring Summer 2012? Do you have a favourite print?

In addition to the solid nylon taffeta, and popular poly-memory boardshorts. This year we have added a vichy print with the famous SUNDEK rainbow - it’s been a hit.

- Lorenzo Pacini, designer of Sundek.

Can you reveal any exciting news for SUNDEK in 2012 and beyond?

I think that the most exciting news for us is our expansion with stores worldwide in such exciting places as Saint Tropez, the Carribean, Mexico, Kuwait and Dubai. We are also very excited about our new Lycra trunks project that will help enforce the rainbow image to SUNDEK customers who prefer this style, for in their freetime in the pool and on the beach.

A project by Johan Lindeberg

How do you feel BLK DNM is a continuation of your career and your aesthetic?

BLK DNM is definitely a manifest of everything I have done before, but with BLK DNM I feel I’m more true in my taste and I’m deeper in my intuition than I have every been. It’s a very personal expression and it reflects the life I want to live. Why do you call the collection ‘item-based’? Are you on a search for the perfect leather jacket, the perfect pair of jeans?

I just felt I can’t do themed collections any longer as I want BLK DNM to be what I want to wear or what I want to see on a woman. I am trying to create great modern pieces with attitude that always work... What prompted you to begin BLK DNM with online sales only? (We glad that changed quickly!)

I wanted BLK DNM to be born digitally. I’m always trying to find ways to communicate directly with the end consumer. I want online sales to be central in the BLK DNM distribution, not just a complement.a How do you feel BLK DNM is a continuation of your career and your aesthetic?

I just felt I can’t do themed collections any longer as I want BLK DNM to be what I want to wear or what I want to see on a woman. I am trying to create great modern pieces with attitude that always work... Why the name BLK DNM? Not a blue jeans kinda guy?

Maybe as a contrast to having had my own personal name on the label for 11 years, but I also like generic names like Apple, White Cube gallery or American Apparel. I also wear mostly black jeans and I just like the name... What prompted you to begin BLK DNM with online sales only? (We’re glad that changed quickly!)

I wanted BLK DNM to be born digitally. I’m always trying to find ways to communicate directly with the end consumer. I want online sales to be central in the BLK DNM distribution, not just a complement. What is it about NY city that fuels you? Tell us about the atelier there.

I built brands from Stockholm, Italy and Los Angeles, but I feel that in New York I can be myself and every day. I’m inspired by everything happening around me. But in the end it’s just about energy. At 237 Lafayette between Spring and Prince we have our store and creative space and I have my studio in the basement. Lafayette is a great creative area and I really love to hear feedback on our product from the store.

What is your take on the collection for Spring Summer 2012? What inspires you, gets you going?

I have so many great strong women around me that have become muses. For menswear, I only do things I like to wear myself. Could you give us a taste of what’s on the moodboard for next winter too?

As I’m not doing any theme collection, I only do things that feel right, but I’m adding more textures to BLK DNM. As a complement to the tailoring, leather jackets and jeans I am also doing a kind of grunge-inspired knitwear program and more utility-inspired pieces like parkas etc. My inspiration is the life I live in downtown New York. BLK DNM has a lot of attitude, but still with a chic twist. What can we expect from a whiff of the BLK DNM 11 perfume? Does it have attitude?

The perfume is exactly what I like to wear or what I like a woman to wear. I tried to create a true unisex perfume. The main ingredients are cedar wood, incense, musk and black pepper. You’ve endeavoured into film and print publishing already with BLK DNM. Can you explain these projects a little? Any more exciting things in the pipeline?

The world doesn’t really need another clothing brand, and I felt that if I’m starting something from scratch it has to be different. I want to bring the brand in different directions and see it more as a creative project rather than a fashion brand. I think it’s an era when brands need to have content. We are working on our second BLK DNM Gazette that we will launch in June. Finally, how do you feel BLK DNM resonates with Renaissance in Antwerp, a space designed for a luxe urban lifestyle?

I have always liked Antwerp. I think the energy is a combination of intellectual depth and great taste. Something I hope that BLK DNM also represents. What can we expect from a whiff of the BLK DNM 11 perfume? Does it have attitude?
