EDITORIAL The first rays of sunlight enter the room as I sit here writing this and I feel Spring in the air. The warm sunbeam hits my skin and I immediately start to feel better and it makes me think about the future… Looking at Princess throughout the years, I see a part of history, a little bit of art, always changing, but always doing so in style. Where will we be in the future? Who can tell… I’d like to take you there, 20 years from now, and show you where we’re at. I am so excited about what is happening, but unfortunately I can’t hurry time. Each and every day will be part of a journey to get us to this exciting path Princess has lying ahead. I’m delighted to uncover a little bit of the mystery: without revealing too much, we are thrilled to announce the opening of a new boutique in one of Antwerp’s most interesting venues. The store will carry an exciting new concept, which is likely to set a new standard for luxury shopping in Antwerp, maybe even Belgium. Whilst shooting for this magazine, a friend told me: to succeed in life, you need 3 things. First of all, you need a heart to feel and equilibrate. Secondly, you need the balls to go for it. Last but not least, you need your brain, the ultimate tool to refine all your actions and guide you through every choice you make. Now we’re at a stage where we definitely need these 3 tools. The future looks exciting and promising, but remains still unwritten… Yours, Frédéric

Christophe Coppens (°1969) is one of Belgium’s most successful accessory designers. His hats have graced the heads of many royals and popstars all over the world, his collections are sold in some of the most exclusive boutiques and up until now, had his own shops only in Brussels. Starting in March, Christophe Coppens will be opening his first shop in Antwerp in collaboration with Princess Meir. In an interview he tells us about why he chose Princess, the perfect accessory and celebrities wearing his creations. 16
Until now you’ve been mostly based in Brussels. What made you decide to open a shop in Antwerp in collaboration with Princess? The atelier and studios are based in Brussels. Worldwide we have 150 selling points. But so far, we have only been selling the unique pieces in our Salon in Brussels. This is mainly because of the high service linked to these pieces. Many of them are one of a kind and need to be sold with knowledge of the product and experience towards the customer. The long-term relationship we already had with Princess made us decide that the spirit of their shop is very close to our own. For me. they are the perfect partners to work with our unique pieces. They have the same commercial ethics and appreciation for nice materials and quality finishes. The salon will be positioned upstairs, next to the wedding corner. Me and my team will be in constant communication with the Princess team so we can provide the same quality of service as we do in the Salon in Brussels. My mother, who has 18 years of experience selling my hats, will also be around to help out customers. I will be present myself several days a year for special commissions. We will be adding new pieces on a weekly base, to keep the choice wide enough.
Plenty of celebrities have worn your creations over the years, from the Royal Family to pop starts like Roisin Murphy, Rihanna and Beth Ditto. Do you still get excited when they wear something you made? Or do you prefer the “average” woman or man” Average does not exist! Of course we like it when a celebrity or somebody of the royal family wears our accessories. Of course it really brightens the day and it is a nice sign of appreciation of our hard work. But a happy customer in the shop or the Salon is just as important, if not even more important to me.
For most of us, a hat is only for a special occasion, like a wedding. How do you feel about that? You have hats and you have hats. In our main collection we sell hats and other accessories for every day life. In winter, there’s hats to protect from the cold, in summer for the sun, or just because it is fun or pretty. A well-chosen accessory can really colour your life. The pieces sold in the Salon are indeed mostly for weddings and cocktails, which are highlights in every woman’s life, something they will remember forever.
You, of course, don’t only just make hats. There’s also a range of other accessories like scarves, gloves, bow ties, etc… What is the importance of the right accessory with an outfit? It can really make or break an outfit. An accessory has to fit someone’s pearsonality, and bring out what is already present in the person wearing it. It cannot be a disguise. You have to look at the woman, not the accessory. It should make her feel pretty and lift her up. I
believe it should bring a smile on peoples faces.
Over the past few decades Belgium has produced so many great fashion designers, why do you think that is? I think because we work hard, have such good fashion schools, we respect our past and remain down to earth.
You are in the jury of “De Designers”, a tv programme on finding young designers. What made you decide to do this? Any excuse of bringing fashion on TV is good. Usually fashion is only on TV when you see a naked breast or a skinny model or when a designer gets bankrupt. And of course it is also good fun.
But do you think the talent on a show like this is enough to make it in the “real world? It takes more than talent to make it in the real world. But that’s not only in fashion. And above all, the Designers is a game, fun, but it’s really just a game.
Where do you get your inspiration from? Anywhere and always. Books, music, people, nature, the arts, that’s all I need to get started
Who is the ideal woman/man you would like to design for? Nobody and everybody
Where do you see Christophe Coppens (the man and the brand) in 5 years’ time? Let’s take one week at the time
Which designer do you admire most and why? Many for so many reasons… Actually all of them for different reasons: Walter for his identity Dries for his Business Chalayan for his approach McQueen for his whole oeuvre Gaultier for his influence Lagerfeld for being the emperor Newcomers like Juun J and Romain Kremer And so on….
What is the one accessory no woman or man should live without? None, you can live without very easily, be nice to each other, that’s way more important!

Who Sophie Albou, 43, France What The diffusion line of Paul & Joe. It’s not called Paul & Joe Sister for nothing. It truly is the younger sibling to the mainline collection. It compliments it but has its own, younger personality. Paul & Joe Sister still has that French feel, but is a little more cheeky and retro. Where Princess Antwerp, Sketch
