A.P. Indy’s son Pulpit has developed quite a reputation as a sire of sires over the past few years, primarily through the exploits of his son Tapit, who has soared near the top of both racetrack and commercial sire lists. One great son does not a sire of sires make, but Pulpit has several other successful sons at stud, led by Sky Mesa, who enjoyed another productive weekend last week, when the 3-year-old filly Sky Girl won the Grade 3 Dogwood Stakes and the 2-year-old filly Aibhilin captured the Selima Stakes. From the first crop of 1992 Horse of the Year and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner A.P.
Indy, Pulpit (out of Preach, by Mr. Prospector) provided the first indication that A.P. Indy would be just as good a stallion as he was a racehorse. Unraced at 2 because of a dicey ankle, Pulpit was the sensation of the 1997 winter meeting at Gulfstream Park, winning his maiden debut, an allowance race, and the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes in rapid succession. Pulpit did not get the best of trips in the Florida Derby, allowing Captain Bodgit to get first run, and he finished second. The colt rebounded with an easy victory in the Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes. That made him the morning-line favorite for the 1997 Kentucky Derby over Silver Charm, Captain Bodgit, and Free House, but after maintaining a contested lead into the far turn, he had nothing more to offer and finished fourth behind that formidable trio.

Pulpit emerged from the Derby with a sore ankle once again, and although trainer Frank Brothers tried to get him back to the races, the ankle refused to cooperate, and Pulpit was retired to his owner-breeder’s Claiborne Farm for the 1998 breeding season. Although never the height of fashion and never bred to the huge books of mares that his contemporaries covered, Pulpit carved out a highly respectable stud career before his death last December, siring 70 stakes winners from 863 foals of racing age (8 percent) to date. From Pulpit’s second crop, Sky Mesa was the first of Pulpit’s 10 Grade 1 winners to date, capturing the 2002 Hopeful Stakes. That 1 3/4-length victory over Pretty Wild and Zavata followed a ridiculously easy 7 3/4-length win in his debut four weeks earlier at Saratoga. Five weeks later, Sky Mesa confirmed his brilliance with a four-length romp in the Grade 2 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland. That made Sky Mesa a heavy morning-line favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, but a day before the race, he was scratched due to filling in an ankle. Like many male-line descendants of Bold Ruler, Pulpit himself was a heavily muscled horse whose ballerina legs could not carry the weight of his Mr. America body. As a son of Caress, a daughter of the heavily muscled Storm Cat, Sky Mesa inherited a double dose of that extraordinary muscularity, and his front legs, frankly, were not properly constructed to carry all that weight. As an undefeated Grade 1-winning juvenile, Sky Mesa was one of the winter-book favorites for the 2003 Kentucky Derby, but despite veteran trainer John Ward’s best efforts, he did not make it back to the races until the following July. Considering his long layoff, he ran an excellent race. Tracking the pace of Strong Hope but lacking a rally when it mattered, he finished third, beaten 3 1/4 lengths, in the Grade 2 Dwyer Stakes. Sky Mesa ran even better in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational a few weeks later but could not catch the front-running Peace Rules over the speed-favoring Monmouth track, finishing second, 1 3/4 lengths behind. Sky Mesa faced Peace Rules again in the Grade 1 Travers but ran no sort of race, finishing last behind Ten Most Wanted, beaten 20 1/2 lengths, with Peace Rules second. He emerged from the Travers with a bruised foot, and since he had already been syndicated to stand the following season at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky., Sky Mesa did not race again. Sky Mesa has carved out a solid but not spectacular stud career at Three Chimneys. Sky Girl is his 32nd stakes winner (6 percent) and 12th graded winner from 566 foals of racing age, a list headed by Grade 1 winners General Quarters and Sky Diva. Sky Girl is the third foal out of Vargas Girl, a Deputy Minister mare who was
DRF BREEDING
either quite slow or totally uninterested in being a racehorse, since she never finished closer than fifth in eight starts on the Midwest circuit. Vargas Girl qualified for the breeding shed, though, because she was a half-sister to 1999 Grade 1 Futurity Stakes winner Bevo, by Prospectors Gamble, and to 2002 Grade 3 ArlingtonWashington Lassie Stakes winner Moonlight Sonata, by Carson City. Moonlight Sonata has already produced 2011 Grade 2 Indiana Derby winner Wilburn, by Bernardini, and Sky Girl’s very close relation Beethoven, by Sky Mesa, who won the 2008 Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. Sky Girl’s second dam, Wheatly Way, by the moderate sire Wheatly Hall, won a minor stakes at Calder and was a halfsister to stakes winner Olde Elegance, by Diamond Prospect. Sky Girl’s third dam, Family Way, by Cyane, also was a minor stakes winner, counting the Cleveland Cotillion Stakes among her four stakes wins. Sky Girl’s sixth dam, Misleading, by
Sweep, stands as the distant head of an outstanding family developed largely by the late Jane Lunger’s Christiana Stables. The family includes the major runners Endine, Donut King, Thinking Cap, Light Hearted, and To the Lighthouse. By far the best horse descending from Sky Girl’s fifth dam, Misleading’s daughter Effie B., by Bull Dog, however, is Twixt, by Restless Native, a daughter of Family Way’s half-sister Eveleen, by Quarter Deck. Twixt never made fewer than 16 starts a season in her four-year racing career, and her record of 26 wins in 70 career starts, including wins in the Grade 1 Top Flight Handicap and Grade 2 Milady, Susquehanna, and Firenze handicaps, puts to shame our fragile contemporary racers. Both Sky Mesa and Pulpit managed only six starts, and Sky Mesa’s broodmare sire, Storm Cat, only eight. And while that was enough to demonstrate their high racing class, it does not promote confidence in the durability of their offspring. Sky Mesa’s foals ages 3 and
up, however, average 10.6 career starts, which is not that far off the current average for the breed, while Pulpit’s foals average 11.7 starts, which is pretty close to the current average. Sky Mesa’s dam, multiple Grade 3 winner Caress, by Storm Cat, was an exceedingly well-bred mare who has produced multiple Grade 3 winner Golden Velvet, by Seeking the Gold. Caress is a full sister to Grade 3 winners Bernstein – a very good sire – and Country Cat, and a halfsister to Grade 2 winner Della Francesca, by Danzig. Another half-sister, Emmaus, by Silver Deputy, is the dam of Grade 3 winner Wiseman’s Ferry, by Hennessy, the sire of 2012 Horse of the Year Wise Dan. Sky Mesa’s female line traces to the great La Troienne, his seventh dam, through Buckpasser’s dam, Busanda. Sky Mesa is inbred 4x4 to Secretariat, 6x4 to both Northern Dancer and Round Table, and has an additional cross of Busanda through Buckpasser, the sire of A.P. Indy’s second dam, Lassie Dear. Since Sky Mesa already has the three

most common close-up names in contemporary pedigrees – Storm Cat, A.P. Indy, and Mr. Prospector – his best progeny are, inevitably, more inbred than average, but Sky Girl is an exception to that rule. Her closest inbreeding is a fairly standard 5x4x6 triple of Northern Dancer, but the most interesting duplication in her pedigree is an additional cross of Buckpasser through Wheatly Hall, a son of Buckpasser’s Canadian champion son Norcliffe. In addition to Tapit and Sky Mesa, Pulpit’s sons Essence of Dubai, Sightseeing, and Stroll all have sired graded stakes winners. Sky Mesa’s record is clearly better than all of those except Tapit. Sky Mesa’s best son, General Quarters, who won the 2009 Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes and 2010 Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic, entered stud in Florida in 2013. While General Quarters may be a longshot at stud, Sky Mesa still has an outside chance of establishing his own branch of Pulpit’s male line and making Pulpit a true sire of sires.

Close Hatches’s win in the Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes last week at Parx Racing further burnished her credentials as one of the best 3-year-old fillies in an above-average crop. Three-time Grade 1 winner Princess of Sylmar still had a firm hold as the divisional leader entering this weekend, when she was scheduled to challenge champion Royal Delta in the Grade 1 Beldame. The Cotillion, however, was Close Hatches’s second top-level score this year, having taken the Mother Goose at Belmont in June, and the dark bay or brown filly’s running style – either setting or laying just off the pace – should serve her well if trainer Bill Mott elects to point her to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita. Close Hatches is campaigned by Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms, which stands her young sire, First Defence, at its U.S. branch in Lexington, Ky. First Defence, who stood for $7,500 this year, is one of a pair of stallions at Juddmonte’s Kentucky farm, the other being veteran Mizzen Mast. That Grade 1-winning son of Cozzene made headlines last fall when two of his daughters – turf sprinter Mizdirection and French import Flotilla – won Breeders’ Cup races. While flying under the radar somewhat, First Defence has made inroads in the competitive Central Kentucky market, and as of Sept. 24 ranks eighth on the North American second-crop sire list. Not surprisingly, Close Hatches is his best runner to date. A homebred of the powerful Juddmonte operation, First Defence began his racing career in New York for Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel. It took some time, but the son of Unbridled’s Song became another one of Frankel’s many Juddmonte Grade 1 winners when he took the Forego as a 4-year-old in 2008. That win validated the potential many saw in First Defence from the outset, as he was a product of one of Juddmonte’s most successful female families. First Defence’s dam, the Seattle Slew mare Honest Lady, won the Grade 1 Santa Monica Handicap and three Grade 2 stakes – all at seven furlongs – and retired with just under $900,000 in earnings after finishing second to eventual champion Kona Gold by a half-length in the 2000 Breeders’

First Defence, who stands at Juddmonte Farm, has sired two graded/group stakes winners in his first crop and is eighth on the North American second-crop sire list.
Continued from page 7 Cup Sprint. Honest Lady translated that on-track performance to her broodmare career, producing five winners in addition to First Defence from seven starters. Two of those winners – Phantom Rose, by Danzig, and Honest Quality, by Elusive Quality – have captured listed stakes in Europe. Honest Lady is part of a quintet of graded stakes winners that made her dam, Toussaud, by El Gran Senor, a blue hen mare for Juddmonte. A Grade 1 winner herself, Toussaud produced Grade 1 winners Chester House and Chiselling along with Grade 2 winner Decarchy (the first and last of these have had success at stud, as well). Best of all, Toussaud’s supremely talented son Empire Maker gave Frankel his only Triple Crown win in the 2003 Belmont and is currently a leading sire, having been expatriated to Japan for the 2011 breeding season. Toussaud was named Broodmare
of the Year in 2002 by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders. Like his dam, First Defence preferred seven furlongs, winning three of four starts at that distance, including the Forego, and finishing second to Hard Spun in the 2007 Grade 1 King’s Bishop. He also won the 1 1/16-mile Long Branch Breeders’ Cup Stakes at Monmouth at 3. In his only career turf start, he picked up a win in the 2008 Grade 3 Jaipur Handicap at Belmont. He was first or second in 9 of 14 career starts. Such consistency, combined with his superlative pedigree, made First Defence a natural to return to stand at stud at Juddmonte after racing. Although it is early in his stud career, First Defence has already shown a penchant for siring diverse runners. His best 2-year-old in 2012, Dundonnell, won the Group 3 Acomb Stakes in England for Juddmonte and then ran a good fourth in the Group 1 Breeders’ Cup
Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita. The colt has trained on with Roger Charlton to win a listed stakes and place in a Group 3 race in England this year. Dundonnell is the product of another rich Juddmonte bloodline, as his dam, the unraced Danzig mare Family, is out of Razyana, by His Majesty, who is the dam of Group 1 winner and breed-shaping sire Danehill and three other graded/group stakes winners – all four also by Danzig. Close Hatches was bred in Kentucky by England-based Millsec Ltd. Her dam, the Storm Cat mare Rising Tornado, was a winner in France. Her second dam, stakes-placed Silver Star, by Zafonic, was a full sister to European champion and pensioned Darley sire Xaar. Close Hatches’s female family is dominated by turf runners, such as Grade 1 United Nations and Clement Hirsch winner Senure and Group 1 Dubai Duty Free winner Cityscape. Blush With Pride, winner of
the 1982 Kentucky Oaks and dam of 2007 Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour, is another top-class relative. Close Hatches has won five of seven starts and earned $1,007,300, and had already proven her ability at 1 1/8 miles by taking the Grade 2 Gazelle earlier this year. Her only poor performance came in the Kentucky Oaks, and she was no match for now-sidelined Midnight Lucky when second in the Grade 1 Acorn this spring, but since then she has strung together two impressive Grade 1 wins. Given her pedigree and Juddmonte’s reputation for excellence in turf racing – evidenced most clearly in their recent stewardship of homebred superstar and Banstead Manor stallion Frankel – it would be interesting to see how Close Hatches handles turf at some point. For now, the filly is set to build First Defence’s profile in the months ahead, and has already set a high bar for his subsequent runners to match.

Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale will test regional market By Joe Nevills The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern fall yearling sale will be the first measuring stick to see just how far the market’s momentum can roll following a strong Keeneland September yearling sale that indicated recovery from a prolonged industry slump. Competitive bidding from a diverse pool of buyers resulted in a record-high median at the Keeneland September sale. However, it also meant that many buyers were left still wanting horses when the marathon sale came to a close. “I’m hoping [Keeneland’s momentum] spills over into our sale,” said Paget Bennett, Fasig Tipton’s Midlantic sales director. “It looks like there are plenty of people out there wanting to buy horses.” The one-day sale will be held Monday at Fasig-Tipton’s Midlantic sales pavilion in Timonium, Md., beginning at 10 a.m. Eastern. The catalog features 390 yearlings, up 4 percent from the 375 cataloged last year. While the sale’s appeal is in its regional offerings – led by yearlings bred in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York – Bennett said the pool of bidders ought to be as diverse as the horses who go through the ring. “I think the beauty of this sale is we appeal to everybody,” she said. “There’s always a few horses at the top for that level, and then there’s a middle market and a lower end. That’s the thing: We have so many different groups in this area that look to this sale to do their horse buying, so they can shop all over the place at different levels and pretty much find what they’re looking for here. “We’re fortunate in that I don’t think we are strictly one level,” Bennett added. “We’re probably more the middle market, but we do have some nice horses that come here and get rewarded at the top.” Last year’s fall yearling sale was reduced to a single day after spanning two days in the past and featured a smaller catalog, but it still posted an increase in gross. The sale moved 276 horses in 2012 for revenue of $6,166,100, up 0.3 percent over the $6,149,600 from 332 sold the previous year. Drawing more money with fewer horses naturally led to significant gains in the other economic measuring sticks. The average sale price rose 21 percent to $22,341, while the median spiked 30 percent to $12,000. The 2012 sale was led by a Malibu Moon filly who sold to Ellen M. Charles for $300,000. Consigned by Mr. and Mrs. Rick Abbott’s Charlton agency, as agent for Audley Farm Equine, the Virginiabred filly, later named Moonstone Magic, is out of the stakes-placed Holy Bull mare

Never Fail and hails from the family of champion Not Surprising as well as Grade 2 winners How About Now, Lovely Lil, and Abraaj. The Mid-Atlantic region is an especially prosperous one in the current racing landscape, with slots-fueled programs humming along in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, while the revenue generated from the still-new Resorts World Casino New York City at Aqueduct has reaffirmed New York as a national-level breeding program. Almost every state-
bred program represented by yearlings in the sale has a lucrative incentive system to support it. Along those lines, the 87 Marylandbreds cataloged in this year’s auction will be among the first to benefit from the state’s new owners’ and breeders’ incentive program for the entirety of their racing careers, making them more attractive to buyers. The Maryland-bred yearlings will be eligible for a 17.5 percent owners’ bonus next year for finishing in the top three in
maiden, allowance, and claiming races of $10,000 or more. In 2015, those bonuses will increase to 30 percent for all races. Breeders of Maryland-breds saw their incentive program increase to a 30 percent bonus earlier this year. “We’ve got some good things happening in Maryland with some bonuses that we’re getting in place, so I think it’s going to be exciting for Maryland-breds,” Bennett said. “Hopefully, they’ll get a little bit of the shot in the arm that they needed.”
