Illegal Doping Meets Its Match Trainers Praise naTural alTernaTive

By: Mark Hansen

The pressure to win is so enormous that many horsemen resort to whatever it takes to get a piece of the purse or a decent sale…even if it means putting their horses’ lives in mortal danger by doping them with illegal synthetic erythropoietin (EPO) drugs to boost endurance. Veterinarian Gary Smith said, “It’s a problem all over the industry. There is no way horses should be put on (synthetic) EPO.” So how do racers win? How do you gain a competitive edge without harming your horses or risking your livelihood? The answer may be found in a safe all-natural horse supplement that supports natural EPO function. Why is EPO boosting so critical? Just like in people, a horse’s muscles require oxygen for fuel. Red blood cells are the body’s oxygen-carrying cells. A higher red blood cell count = more oxygen = more muscle energy. Elevated muscle energy helps the horse perform harder, faster and longer during endurance events. All horses naturally produce EPO in their kidneys to stimulate production of new red blood cells from bone marrow. In short, EPO is a natural “blood builder.” With EPO doping, trainers try to boost the EPO effect to get a winning performance every time. They use a synthetic EPO (recombinant human EPO), even though the side effects can harm the horse. That’s one reason why it’s illegal. Fortunately there’s another option. EPO-Equine® is a safe, highly effective natural dietary supplement

scientifically engineered for performance horses. A Kentucky trainer who refused to give out his name, said, “I don’t want my competition to know about this.” He found EPO-Equine to be so effective that he’s dead set against disclosing who he is, who his horses are, or even where he trains and races. He first started ordering a single jar of EPO-Equine® once a month. Now he’s ordering several CASES each month. And he won’t tell BRL exactly why. He said respectfully, “Sorry – no way.” Bioengineers at U.S. based Biomedical Research Laboratories (BRL), first discovered a completely natural EPO-booster for human athletes (and it’s working miracles for top athletes and amateurs around the world). Seeing these results, horse trainers contacted BRL and asked about using this natural formula for their animals. That’s when the BRL team dug deeper and discovered a proprietary, horse-friendly strain of a common herb that promotes optimal blood-building results. EPO-Equine® is based on the blood-boosting abilities of a certain strain of Echinacea that’s astounding researchers and trainers alike. (It’s not a strain you can find at the local health store.) Veterinarians at the Equine Research Centre in Ontario, Canada ran a double-blind trial investigating the blood building properties of the active ingredient in EPO-Equine in healthy horses. For 42 days, one group of horses was supplemented with the active ingredient in EPO-Equine and another group of horses was given a placebo.

The supplement delivered significant blood building results, increasing red blood cell count and hemoglobin levels. Researchers also observed improved blood quality and increased oxygen transport in the supplemented horses. Improved blood levels leads to elevated exercise physiology and performance. The patent-pending formula in EPO-Equine® contains a dozen different herbs, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components combined to promote natural red blood cell production…for remarkable speed, strength and stamina right out of the gate. Trainers find it easy to add just 1 scoop (3.2 grams) of EPO-Equine® to the horse’s daily feeding routine in the barn or on the road. Within a few weeks of daily use, you can expect to see increased red blood cell levels with no undesirable side effects. An increase in red blood cell levels can improve muscle performance, supercharge endurance, and enhance recovery after hard exercise. Nothing else is scientifically proven to deliver these benefits in a completely safe and natural formula. Compared to the cost of veterinarians, drugs, icing, tapping the knees, and putting the horse on Bute; or even the consequences of being banned for synthetic doping, EPO-Equine® is very affordable at the low price of just $59.95 per jar. Or save $180 if you are ready to commit to a larger trial of 12-jar case for just $539.55 with FREE shipping. EPO-Equine® can be ordered at www.EPOEquine.com or 1-800-557-9055, and comes with a 100% money-back satisfaction guarantee.

Buyers, sellers expecting positive trends to carry into Fasig-Tipton By glenye Cain Oakford When Fasig-Tipton Kentucky’s July select yearling sale begins at Newtown Paddocks in Lexington on Monday, consignors and buyers will be looking for sale figures to rise from the 2012 levels that they felt were generally healthy. And while many are expecting buyers to remain highly selective, the broad feeling among sale participants is that decreased supply, plus rising confidence, will lift the tide for many select yearling consignors. “That selectivity is fair enough, and I think we accept that’s part of the business,” said Headley Bell of Mill Ridge Sales, which has consigned eight yearlings to the July sale. “You’re hoping for that one which will carry the others, and you’re hoping you have enough depth to be able to do it. We’re not yet into a rising tide that’s [lifting] all boats, by any means, but we’re floating along, and that’s better than sinking. I like our spot.” That spot, for select yearling sales overall, generally was on higher ground last year than in 2011, thanks in good measure to the ongoing drop in Thoroughbred foalcrop size. That helped bring supply and demand into tighter alignment, and many sale participants cited that and a growing sense of financial stability as reasons the sale will see improved auction figures. Select yearling auctions in 2012 generally posted averages and medians that were either level with the previous year or up, sometimes by double digits; so did several important regional sales. The FasigTipton July sale’s median, $60,000, was the same as in 2011. But the auction’s average climbed 16 percent, despite a 12 percent increase in catalog size. This year’s catalog is 24 percent thinner, with 258 yearlings in it, compared with the 338 yearlings who were in the catalog last season – another reason supply and demand could spark gains on last season’s July performance. Yearling sellers’ optimism got a boost from this spring’s lively 2-year-old sale returns. The pinhookers who buy yearlings to resell at juvenile auctions often faced feast-or-famine conditions at the select 2-year-old markets, but some of those who survived the gauntlet likely will be back at the yearling sales with more money to spend. The four major select juvenile sales – Barretts March, Fasig-Tipton Florida, Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. March, and Keeneland April – all posted double-digit increases in average and median. The OBS March sale even set records for average ($155,643) and median ($125,000) and equaled a sale record for its top price of $1.8 million for a Smart Strike–Mini Sermon colt. The OBS April sale, offering a much larger catalog than any of the small, boutique auctions, also set records across the board. Its average soared by 38 percent to $59,974, and the $35,000 median was up 30 percent from last season.

The upward trend continued into Triple Crown season and the early summer: Fasig-Tipton’s Midlantic auction rose across the board, with the average ($66,968) and median ($40,000) up by 25 percent and 43 percent. And OBS had another strong showing at its June sale, ringing up a sale-record $525,000 Pioneerof the Nile—Early Vintage colt and records for gross ($14,989,200), average ($33,836), and median ($20,000). Numerous scratches and higher buyback rates dimmed the outlook at a number of the juvenile sales, indicating buyers’ very careful selectivity. That means pinhookers are likely to be selective, too, when they come calling at the yearling sale barns. In fact, some of the select juvenile market’s characteristics certainly will be on display in the yearling market, too, where many of the end-user buyers, and their racing goals, are the same. “There’s still demand at the top of the market for what are perceived as the elite offerings that instill competition among the more prominent racing stables to feature in graded stakes, the classics, and the Breeders’ Cup races,” yearling-to-juvenile reseller Nick de Meric said of the juvenile market. He could just as well have been referring to the yearling market. The juvenile sales saw another trend that should help bolster pinhookers’ bidding at the yearling sales: a deep market of buyers at larger 2-year-old auctions. That helped spread money around even at open sales and put more money in pinhookers’

fasig-tipton Continued from page 3 pockets. That factor could be felt at FasigTipton July, which traditionally draws a strong base of pinhookers and domestic end-user owners. “I think it’s definitely going to reinvigorate the yearling market to a greater or lesser extent,” de Meric said of the pinhookers’ 2013 successes. “We know we have whatever percentage impact on the yearling market, and it will be reinforced, for sure, after this year’s 2-year-old results. I also think we’ll have the combined effect of pricing each other out of the market for horses that we would like to have. Only one person is going to sign that ticket, and very often, it’s going to be an enduser. So, it’s going to be competitive for those horses we all tend to land on. “What’s going to define success for pinhookers at next year’s 2-year-old sales is the ability to find the rough diamond, to use the old cliché: the slightly less obvious individual that can be bought right and then sold accordingly. But I’m quite sure the recent 2-year-old results are going to have a positive impact on the yearling market overall. And that’s good for everybody because we’re all in the same boat at the end of the day, and none of us want to see it sink.” Some of the pinhookers’ competitors for those horses – buyers who plan to race their purchases – also are feeling fairly bullish. Terry Finley, who heads up West Point Thoroughbreds, said his public partnership and syndication business is seeing new interest and investors. “By the end of the yearling season, we will have bought probably more than we’ve ever bought at the yearling sales,” Finley said. “Yes, the prices probably are going to be firmer or go up. The economics of the game, especially at the top, have strengthened, but they’re still very difficult. It still costs a lot of money to get a yearling to the races, then [there are] the ongoing costs. Purses are better, but it’s still a tough economic model. I know that has to work into people’s minds as they’re appraising yearlings they’re looking to buy.” Finley said new investors have given him ammunition for the yearling sales, and reason for optimism. “We’ve done a fairly good job attracting people, and our business has been very, very firm,” he said. “The demand is there. I see a lot of people who are really intrigued by the business and, for one reason or another, they’re at a place in their lives where they’re able to [participate].” Fasig-Tipton officials hope this year’s July yearling sale might also benefit from a new feature: a smaller auction of racingage horses that will take place the same day, immediately after the yearling session. Bell, whose Mill Ridge agency also is consigning some racing-age horses at Fasig-Tipton, believes there could be some cross-pollination between the yearling and racing-age markets via the trainers and owners on the sales grounds. West Point’s Finley is one potential ex-

ample. “We’re going to look [at the racingage horses],” Finley said. “I’m going to be there looking at those horses because people who might not be as open-minded as we are might overlook those horses. You never know the circumstances of why someone wants to sell a horse, and this could be a perfect venue to pick up some ready-made horses, which we’ve done in the last year and a half. It’s helped our business, and we’ve really had some luck

buying horses off the racetrack.” With both pinhookers and some key end users feeling positive, Fasig-Tipton’s July auction could start off the yearling season strongly. But Finley, like other buyers, also will be trying to leaven exuberance with rationality. “If you’re in the market, you know that a good number of the pinhookers did really, really well this past year at the 2-year-old sales, so logic would have

Gone (West) but not forgotten

Bahamian Squall, who won the Grade 2 Smile Sprint Handicap at Calder on July 6, might be the last top horse by Gone West, who has sired 101 stakes winners.

JOHN P. SPARKMAN Mr. Prospector’s transfer from Aisco Farm in Florida to Claiborne Farm in Kentucky for the 1981 breeding season meant a sharp upgrade in the quality of broodmares to be covered by the sensational young son of Raise a Native. Mr. Prospector had shown what he could do with mares with Kentucky-quality pedigrees through the accomplishments of Fappiano, Miswaki, Gold Beauty, and Eillo, among others, and buyers responded by digging into their bank accounts when his first Kentucky-conceived yearlings came on the market in 1983. Al Zawbaah, out of a stakes-winning three-quarter-sister to Storm Bird, became Mr. Prospector’s first of many sevenfigure yearlings at $2.7 million at the 1983 Keeneland July sale of selected yearlings. Thus, by the time Mare Haven Farm’s

dark-coated colt by Mr. Prospector out of stakes winner Secrettame, by Secretariat, stepped into the Keeneland sales ring two years later, a seven-figure price for such a handsome, well-made colt was a foregone conclusion. The $1.9 million ticket agent Harley Clemons signed for the colt whom Mr. and Mrs. James Mills would name Gone West raised not the slightest ripple in a sales crowd still drinking in the bar to celebrate the world-record sale of Seattle Dancer for $13.1 million just an hour or so earlier. Almost 30 years on, however, Seattle Dancer is forgotten for almost everything except his record price, while Gone West occupies a place of honor in the pantheon of Thoroughbred sires. Bahamian Squall, the winner of the Grade 2 Smile Sprint Handicap on July 6 at Calder, is Gone West’s 49th group or graded stakes winner and one of 101 stakes winners from 1,281 lifetime foals (7.9 percent). Those numbers, impressive as they

sparkman Continued from page 5 are, do not, however, adequately account for breeders’ reverence for Gone West. The reason for Gone West’s exalted status in Thoroughbred pedigrees is more obvious, though, when one peruses the accompanying list of 23 sons and grandsons who have sired Grade 1 or Group 1 winners all over the globe. That list includes leading American sire Elusive Quality and three-time leading South African sire Western Winter, plus such outstanding sires as Mr. Greeley, Grand Slam, Zafonic, Proud Citizen, and Gone West’s current star son Speightstown. Bred by Dr. and Mrs. William O. Reed at their Mare Haven Farm near Lexington, Ky., Gone West was the first foal out of the beautifully bred Secrettame, a Secretariat half-sister to 1980 2000 Guineas winner Known Fact, by In Reality, and to multiple Grade 1 winner and top sire Tentam, by Intentionally. Secrettame had placed in the Grade 2 Gazelle Stakes when the Reeds paid $1.15 million for her at the 1982 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale, and she won the Shirley Jones Handicap for them the following February before being retired and covered by Mr. Prospector in April. Trained by Harley Clemons’s uncle, Racing Hall of Famer Woody Stephens, Gone West lived up to his price and his regal pedigree. The winner of a maiden race from four starts at 2, he improved rapidly early in his second season, winning the Grade 2 Gotham Stakes, running second to Gulch in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial, and winning the Grade 2 Withers. Gone West was simply not cut out to run 1 1/2 miles, though, and failed to extend Stephens’s historic streak of Belmont Stakes winners to six, finishing sixth behind easy winner Bet Twice. Nine furlongs was very much within his compass, though, and Gone West scored his Grade 1 victory in the Dwyer Stakes before tailing off form in his final three starts. Gone West retired to Alice Headley Chandler’s Mill Ridge Farm in 1988 as the winner of six of 17 starts and an earner of $682,251. West by West (out of West Turn, by Cox’s Ridge) provided Gone West with a firstcrop Grade 1 winner by capturing the 1993 Nassau County Stakes, but by then, his second-crop son Zafonic (Zaizafon, by The Minstrel) had made Gone West one of the most popular sires on the international market. Bred and owned by Known Fact’s

owner, Juddmonte Farms, Zafonic was the best 2-year-old in Europe in 1992, when he went unbeaten through four starts, including the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, Prix de la Salamandre, and Prix Morny. Zafonic showed that he had retained all his brilliance with a dominating 3 1/2-length win in the 1993 2000 Guineas but bled when well-beaten in his only subsequent start in the Sussex Stakes. Retired to Banstead Manor Stud, Zafonic sired an equally brilliant 2-year-old, Xaar (Monroe, by Sir Ivor), in his first crop, but Xaar could not dominate at 3, and Zafonic’s subsequent stud career has been somewhat uneven. Despite siring a healthy 9.1 percent ratio of stakes winners to foals, Zafonic’s popularity declined when a portion of his offspring displayed his own tendency to break blood vessels and developed wind problems. Zafonic’s most successful son at stud has been the South African-based Count Dubois, but his son Iffraaj surprised many with his early success in both Europe and New Zealand. Gone West’s most successful sire son to date has been Elusive Quality (Touch of Greatness, by Hero’s Honor), who led the American sire list in 2004, when his son Smarty Jones came within a length of a Triple Crown. A big, powerfully muscular horse who inherited some of the coarseness of his broodmare sire, Hero’s Honor, Elusive Quality possessed brilliant speed as a racehorse, recording a world-record time for a mile of 1:31.63 in the Grade 3 Poker Handicap in 1998. Elusive Quality is not the most consistent sire, but he has proven himself capable of getting top-class runners under all conditions all over the world. His list of 96 stakes winners (6.2 percent of foals ages 3 and up) includes Raven’s Pass, who won at the top level on both turf and synthetic; Sepoy, a champion at 2 and 3 on the hard turf courses of Australia; and top American dirt horses Smarty Jones and Quality Road. Smarty Jones, a smallish, unprepossessing individual, has been a disappointment at stud in America, but Elusive Quality’s French highweighted son Elusive City has done well in both Europe and New Zealand, and Raven’s Pass’s first crop has shown promise in Europe and Dubai. Sepoy has just begun a career as a shuttle stallion in Australia and Europe. Like his sire, Speightstown (Silken Cat, by Storm Cat) was a high-priced yearling, selling for $2 million to Eugene Melnyk at the 1999 Keeneland July sale. Hampered

by a series of minor injuries, he finally was able to show his ultimate ability at 6, capping his career with a win in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Despite their differences in coat color, the chestnut Speightstown bears a strong physical resemblance to his sire and has come close to matching Gone West’s performance and versatility at stud. His progeny have won Grade 1s or Group 1s on dirt and turf and are equally at home on synthetics. A top-10 sire in the United States for the past two years, Speightstown might eventually have the best chance of Gone West’s sons to extend his male line beyond the second generation. In the intensely competitive contemporary stallion market, Bahamian Squall likely will have to win a Grade 1 race to earn a legitimate chance to pass on his genes to future generations, but his pedigree is good enough to merit that chance. He is the 13th foal, 11th winner, and third stakes winner out of his prolific dam, Midway Squall, by Storm Bird. Bahamian

Squall’s older three-quarter brother Apriority, by Gone West’s son Grand Slam, won the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector Stakes and ran second in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap in 2011. Midway Squall was unraced, but her dam, Oh So Precious, by Best Turn, won a stakes and was a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Doonesbear. Bahamian Squall’s fifth dam, Arousal, by Fairway, a half-sister to the great stayer and leading English sire Alycidon, was imported in 1955. Gone West died of the effects of old age in 2009, and Bahamian Squall comes from his penultimate crop. Gone West’s final crop, 3-year-olds of 2013, includes only four foals, and none has shown the slightest indication of developing into a stakesquality horse. Bahamian Squall may turn out to be Gone West’s last hurrah as a sire, but his many Grade 1- and Group 1-winning descendants ensure that Gone West’s name will not soon be forgotten.

hot sire: ghostzapper

develOPing a sOlid rÉsumÉ By Patrick reed During a 50-minute span on July 6, Adena Springs stallion Ghostzapper was represented by a trio of graded stakes winners at three different tracks in one of those thrilling bursts of productivity that make bloodstock aficionados sit up and take notice. In Ghostzapper’s case, such an accomplishment was expected from the day he was retired to stud following one of the most brilliant racing careers of the past two decades. Moreno’s breakthrough win in the Grade 2 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont (5:18 p.m. Eastern), Starship Truffles’s commanding score in the Grade 1 Princess Rooney Handicap at Calder (5:26 p.m.), and Schiaparelli’s game win in the Grade 2 Royal Heroine Mile on turf at Betfair Hollywood Park (3:08 p.m. Pacific) came well into the respective racing careers of those runners. In that respect, they were following a path familiar to their sire. Schiaparelli’s win was the least surprising considering her recent form. The 5-year-old mare, who took the Royal Heroine Mile in front-running fashion as the 11-10 favorite, picked up her second consecutive stakes win at Hollywood after a similar pace-controlling score in the sixfurlong Great Lady M. Stakes on May 26. Schiaparelli is bred on the female side as a turf sprinter, and her pedigree would appear to place her on a beeline toward this fall’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint on Santa Anita’s 6 1/2-furlong downhill course, where she already has started four times and recorded two wins. Her dam, the Avenue of Flags mare Cambiocorsa, made 10 starts on the downhill course, and her impressive eight wins were highlighted by the Grade 3 Sen. Ken Maddy and Las Cienegas, plus the listed Wishing Well and Irish O’Brien stakes. Cambiocorsa’s full brother, California Flag, won five of eight starts on the course, including the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and four Grade 3 stakes. Given this influence, Schiaparelli’s stretch-out win in the Royal Heroine Mile was a bonus for owners and breeders Jan Vandebos and Robert Naify’s RanJan Racing and trainer Mike Puype, especially if they intend to avoid the Puype-trained defending Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner and downhill Santa Anita ace, Mizdirection. Moreno’s performance in the 1 1/16mile Dwyer was a bit more surprising, but the Southern Equine Stable homebred (named after Southern Equine owner Mike Moreno) had indicated that he might have finally figured things out when he romped in a maiden race in his prior start at Belmont, which was his first on the East Coast since shipping in from California. The 3-year-old won the one-mile maiden special weight race on a muddy track June 8 by 6 1/4 lengths and came back with an even more dominant performance in the Dwyer. Moreno, who was gelded this year, has won both of his starts at Belmont after

going winless in nine starts in Southern California, though he had been second to subsequent Grade 2 Swaps Stakes winner Chief Havoc in a maiden race. Moreno is the second winner out of the unraced A.P. Indy mare Danceinthesunlight, which places him in one of the best female families of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. His grandam is Canadian champion Dancethruthedawn, by Mr. Prospector; his third dam is Canadian Horse of the Year and U.S. champion Dance Smartly, by Danzig; and his fourth dam is Canadian champion Classy ’n Smart, by Smarten. This is the elite Sam-Son Farms bloodline that has produced Grade 1 winner and leading sire Smart Strike, Canadian and U.S. champion and successful sire Sky Classic, Canadian champions Regal Classic and Grey Classic, and a host of other standouts.

hot sire Continued from page 7 Trainer Eric Guillot said the 1 1/8-mile, Grade 2 West Virginia Derby on Aug. 3 might be the next start for Moreno, which will give the gelding a chance to stretch his speed and pick up his first two-turn win on dirt – something that should be within his scope based on his pedigree. Starship Truffles is the most experienced of Ghostzapper’s newest stars, having racked up 13 wins at Calder and Gulfstream – primarily in starter-allowance races – before handling a major class hike in the six-furlong Princess Rooney. The 4-year-old filly has a pedigree that through the first three generations tilts toward turf, with several useful runners of Grade 3 quality. Her dam, the Not For Love mare Bobbie Use, won the 2004 Tropical Park Oaks on turf, and her third dam, Grade 3 Gallorette winner La Reine Elaine, produced two course recordholders on turf at Mountaineer. La Reine Elaine is a full sister to stakes winner La Reine Rouge, the second dam of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro. An $11,000 Keeneland yearling and $22,000 Ocala June 2-year-old who was claimed twice in 2012 would not appear to have the best chance of giving Ghostzapper his first Grade 1 winner of 2013, but

Starship Truffles did just that with her 3 3/4-length score over favored Judy the Beauty, another daughter of Ghostzapper. As with many of her sire’s progeny, Starship Truffles appears to be reaching her full potential later in her racing career. She is a late addition to Fasig-Tipton’s inaugural July sale of horses of racing age, scheduled for Monday in Lexington, Ky. Ghostzapper himself was a bit of a late developer. Quarter cracks hindered the horse’s development early in his career, and he was judiciously campaigned by the late Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel and owner and breeder Frank Stronach. Their decisions paid off handsomely when the freakishly talented horse hit his stride on the racetrack during the summer of 2004 as a 4-year-old. Regarded primarily as a sprinter to that point, having won the Grade 1 Vosburgh at 6 1/2 furlongs in 2003, Ghostzapper returned from a nine-month layoff in July with a 4 1/4-length win in the sevenfurlong, Grade 2 Tom Fool. He would go on to win his remaining three starts in 2004, romping in the Grade 3 Philip Iselin, outfinishing Saint Liam in the Grade 1 Woodward, and then setting a stakes and track record of 1:59.02 for 1 1/4 miles in taking the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Lone Star Park.

A comeback win in the next spring’s Met Mile would be the last start for the 2004 Horse of the Year, who was retired to Stronach’s Adena Springs due to a fracture of the sesamoid bone in his left foreleg. With Stonestreet Stables’ Jess Jackson buying a one-third interest in the stallion, Ghostzapper entered Adena’s Kentucky division in 2006 at a pre-recession fee of $200,000. His appealing stallion qualities were many: His sire, Adena’s fellow Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Awesome Again, already was producing top runners such as Grade 1 winners Wilko, Toccet, and Round Pond. Out of the stakes-winning Relaunch mare Baby Zip, Ghostzapper was a half-brother to Grade 1 winner and sire City Zip. Plus, Ghostzapper’s own achievements, particularly relating to speed figures achieved at distances from six furlongs to 1 1/4 miles, were regarded by many as the best of the contemporary era. Ghostzapper only had one stakes winner from his first crop during their 2009 unveiling: listed winner Golden Ghost. First-crop foal Stately Victor would win the 2010 Blue Grass to become the stallion’s first Grade 1 winner, and Arena Elvira would take the Grade 2 Falls City at 4 in 2011. In 2012, first-crop Hunters Bay won two Grade 3 races and finished second

in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile to earn the Sovereign Award as Canada’s champion older horse. Pacific Ocean and La Cloche also would win Grade 3 races as older horses. The late development of many of Ghostzapper’s best runners augurs well for his continued prominence as his fifth crop hits the racetrack this year. He was bred to 105 mares in 2012 and stood for a fee of $40,000 this year. He ranked 17th on the North American general sire list through July 9. The stallion has two other Grade 1 winners in addition to Stately Victor and the newly minted Starship Truffles. Contested, the winner last year of two Grade 1 races, the Test and Acorn, was purchased by Shadai Farm for $2.3 million at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November mixed sale and sent to Japan. Better Lucky, who won last year’s Grade 1 Matriarch and finished a strong second in the Just a Game last month at Belmont, is still in training and could resurface at Saratoga. Other Ghostzapper runners to watch are the aforementioned Judy the Beauty and this year’s San Felipe winner, Hear the Ghost, who is recovering from a minor knee injury but could return to training later this summer.

Catching up with ClarenCe sCharBauer

still having suCCess With alysheBa’s Family By mary rampellini Clarence Scharbauer Jr. has been adding to his highlight reel the past month. The man behind Alysheba celebrated his 88th birthday on July 6 with a stakes win at Lone Star Park. A few weeks earlier, he accounted for his first Churchill Downs stakes win in 25 years when homebred Fiftyshadesofgold romped in the $113,400 Debutante Stakes. Fiftyshadesofgold is emerging as one of the top 2-year-old fillies in the country. She humbled her competition in the Debutante on June 22, one start after a blowout maiden special weight win at Lone Star. Scharbauer is looking forward to the next start for Fiftyshadesofgold, who is being pointed for the Grade 2, $200,000 Adirondack at Saratoga on Aug. 11. “I’m really thankful to the Lord for giving me this filly late in life,” Scharbauer said from his Midland, Texas, home on July 6. “The way she ran at Lone Star, won by 10, then goes up there and beats some pretty good fillies, won by eight, I think you’d have to say she’s something special.” Horses have been a part of Scharbauer’s life since childhood. A rancher, oilman, and philanthropist, Scharbauer said his family came to Texas in the 1880s. Their holdings grew to include some 500,000 acres in Texas and parts of New Mexico. Scharbauer said the operations have focused on raising horses, cattle, and sheep. “He’s a cattleman, but he’s also a serious cowboy,” said Ken Carson, who has worked for Scharbauer for 29 years and serves as general manager of his Valor Farm in the north Texas town of Pilot Point. “He can do anything on horseback. He was a world-class calf roper when he was young. He’s a heck of a horseman. He can walk around a horse and tell you everything about him. He’s a seriously good horseman.” Scharbauer’s earliest racing pursuits came in the 1950s with Quarter Horses. He had a handful of champions, bred the top-class Marion’s Girl, and was voted president of the American Quarter Horse Association in 1975. Scharbauer said he delved into Thoroughbred racing at the request of his wife, Dorothy, who died in 2005. “My wife’s family won the Kentucky Derby in 1959, with Tomy Lee,” Scharbauer said. “We went to Keeneland in 1985. The first five we bought, four of them were stakes winners, and one was stakes-placed.” The 1985 group included a yearling son of Alydar that would be named Alysheba. “He went for $500,000, and all the other Alydars were going for a million, a mil-

lion and a half,” said Jack Van Berg, the Hall of Famer who trained Alysheba. “He stood out, but he was in his everyday clothes.” Alysheba, who raced for Dorothy and the Scharbauers’ daughter, Pam, would go on to win the 1987 Kentucky Derby, fulfilling a longtime hope of Dorothy’s. He was champion 3-year-old male that season and in 1988 was voted Horse of the Year after a campaign topped by a win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, the last Scharbauer family stakes victory at Churchill prior to Fiftyshadesofgold. Alysheba, who retired with then-record earnings of $6,679,242, died in 2009. He was inducted into the Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 1993. “You get one of them in a lifetime,” Scharbauer said. Van Berg said he came to train for the Scharbauers after being recommended by the late Dr. William Lockridge, who knew the family through Carson. In the first few groups of yearlings the Scharbauers bought were Alysheba, Exclusive Enough, Penasco, Ridge Review, and Stalwart Sal. “The Scharbauers, they loved their horses,” Van Berg said. “Mrs. Scharbauer fed Alysheba mints every time they’d come to the barn. He’d nicker for Mrs. Scharbauer.” Fiftyshadesofgold is from the same female family as Alysheba. Her fourth dam is Bel Sheba, the dam of Alysheba. Her third dam is Alysbelle, a full sister to Alysheba that Scharbauer bought as a yearling and raced. Also trained by Van Berg, Alysbelle won the 1993 Grade 2 La Canada at Santa Anita and earned $355,875. “We bought her at Keeneland, in 1990,” said Carson, who in June was elected president of the Texas Thoroughbred Association. “From the moment the catalog came out that year, Clarence kept telling me about that filly. He said, ‘Ken, she’s the only full sister to Alysheba, and there’ll never be another one.’ So it was a huge deal to him. There was no question in my mind that when we left there we would own that filly.” Alysbelle ended up producing the filly Cats Meow, whose daughter Hadif Cat is the dam of Fiftyshadesofgold. Fiftyshadesofgold is a Texas-bred by the Unbridled’s Song stallion My Golden Song, who stands at Valor Farm. “I bred her mother, bought her daddy,” Scharbauer said. “I raised all the family on the bottom. “I’m not partial to any particular line, but I had to like the Alydar line a little bit. There was Alysbelle and I had another Alydar mare about the same age that was

awful good, Jet Route.” These days, Scharbauer has 16 broodmares, Carson said. He keeps about six horses in training, among them Coyote Legend, the reigning Texas-bred horse of the year who surpassed $700,000 in earnings on July 6 when he won the $50,000 Assault Stakes at Lone Star. Scharbauer also stands seven stallions, including Early Flyer, whose offspring swept the first three spots in the $100,000 colts and geldings division of the Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Futurity, also on July 6. Scharbauer bred all three runners, and races third-place finisher Check Ride. Early Flyer was the leading freshman sire in Texas in 2007, one of six stallions to earn that honor for Scharbauer since Hadif in 1995, according to the Texas Thoroughbred Association. “Mr. Scharbauer and Valor Farm, they’ve been the heart and soul of Texas racing for a long time,” said Bret Calhoun, who trains both Fiftyshadesofgold and Coyote Legend. “They’ve supported it with the farm and good stallions, even in a tough market.” Scharbauer was one of the first investors in Lone Star Park, said Corey Johnsen, the track’s first general manager and past president and now head of Kentucky Downs. Johnsen said that when the Texas Racing Commission was making the decision on which license application would be awarded the Class 1 track in north Texas, Scharbauer played a star-

Quarter Horse association Hall of Fame, the Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame, and he received the famed national Golden Spur award, or national rancher of the year, in 1991; honored with the Texas Thoroughbred association’s lifetime achievement award in 2007 ring role at the meeting. “The Lone Star group had decided Clarence Scharbauer would be their key spokesperson,” Johnsen said. “He’s a very effective, passionate speaker. Many people there that day said he was the main reason that the Lone Star Park group was selected. “When I look back at the opening of Lone Star Park, there’s a handful of people that were extremely important in our development, and Clarence and Dorothy Scharbauer were right at the top of the list. I think everybody at Lone Star Park owes them a lot of gratitude for all their efforts and their tireless support.”
