the surprising emergence of Iffraaj

Iffraaj, a Grade 2 winner and the son of a disappointment at stud, is the sire of three of the best 2-year-olds in England.
JOHN P. SPARKMAN The hottest young sire in Europe is without doubt Galileo’s champion son New Approach, sire of champion Dawn Approach and classic winner Talent in his first crop of 3-year-olds. The name and pedigree of perhaps the second-hottest young sire on the other side of the Atlantic, though, is much less familiar to Americans. Until his first crop raced three years ago, in fact, the name of Iffraaj was not all that
familiar to most European breeders either. Though Iffraaj had been a good racehorse, winning seven of his 13 starts including three Group 2 events at seven furlongs, his sire, Zafonic, was considered a disappointment at stud and hardly a candidate to become a sire of sires. Nevertheless, Iffraaj sired French highweighted 2-year-old Wootton Bassett in his first crop, and quickly followed up with New Zealand champion 3-year-old filly Fix in his first Southern Hemisphere crop. Iffraaj’s current crop of European 2-yearolds, conceived when his first runners were juveniles, includes three of the best 2-yearolds in England, headed by recent Group 1 Shadwell Fillies Mile winner Chriselliam.
Bred by Sheikh Mohammed alMaktoum’s Darley, Iffraaj began his racing career in the colors of Sheikh Mohammed’s younger brother Sheikh Ahmed under the tutelage of trainer Michael Jarvis. Third in his first start at 2, a seven-furlong maiden race at Sandown Park behind Post and Rail and future Epsom Derby winner North Light, Iffraaj won by a neck over about the same distance against easier opposition at Warwick a few weeks later. Iffraaj finished fourth, giving three to 11 pounds to the first three finishers, in a seven-furlong handicap at Newmarket’s Craven meeting the following spring, but

Upon his return, Iffraaj began his 4-year-old campaign a different horse, winning three straight handicaps over six and seven furlongs, culminating with a brilliant twolength victory in the prestigious Wokingham Handicap at the Royal Ascot at York meeting, running the six-furlong distance in a sensational 1:08.70 under 132 pounds over the relatively flat York straight course. That performance earned him a shot at the Group 1 July Cup three weeks later, but the soft ground at Newmarket was no use to him, and he trailed home 14th of 19. Given two months to recover, he returned to his best form in the Park Stakes at Doncaster, holding on to win the seven-furlong, Group 2 race by a nose over Sleeping Indian. In his final start at 4, Iffraaj again encountered soft ground in the Group 1 Prix de la Foret at Longchamp and finished seventh of eight behind Court Masterpiece. Kept in training at 5 but transferred to run in Godolphin’s blue colors for trainer Saeed bin Suroor, Iffraaj was as good as ever. Palpably short in his first start when seventh behind Les Arcs in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot, Iffraaj worked much harder in the July Cup, succumbing by a head to Les Arcs in the final strides. It seemed obvious that there was a Group 1 win in Iffraaj’s future at that point, but he raced only twice more, winning the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Goodwood and capturing a second Park Stakes to close out his career. Even without a Group 1 win on his résumé, Iffraaj’s pedigree and outstanding conformation were sufficiently attractive to draw mares to his court, and he retired to Kildangan Stud in 2007. His sire, Zafonic, by Gone West, was undefeated in four starts as a juvenile, and his three Group 1 wins earned him the Cartier Award as champion European 2-year-old male. Zafonic was a brilliant 3 1/2-length winner of the English 2000 Guineas in his second start at 3, but bled in his next start, the Group 1 Sussex Stakes, and did not run again. Zafonic’s stud career followed a similar pattern of initial sensation followed by disappointment and disillusionment. His first-crop son Xaar won four of five starts during a brilliant 2-year-old campaign, but failed in his attempt at the English 2000 Guineas. Despite siring 60 stakes winners at almost a 10 percent stakes winners to foals strike rate, Zafonic never sired another colt of equal brilliance. His daughter Flashy Wings, a Group 2 winner, was highweighted English 2-year-old filly of

2005, and his son Zafeen won the Group 1 St. James’s Palace in 2003, but the string of fast 2-year-olds and champion milers expected after Xaar’s early brilliance never materialized. Zafonic did sire a few Guineas equivalent winners in Dupont (Germany and Italy), Shenck (Italy), and Pacino (Germany), but he sired only four Group 1 winners (Count Dubois, Xaar, Zafeen, and Zee Zee Top) and developed a reputation for siring horses with defects similar to his own. Iffraaj’s dam, Pastorale, by Nureyev, won her first two starts before breaking down in the Irish 1000 Guineas, and the immediate success at stud of her Group 1-winning half-brother Cape Cross, by Green Desert, no doubt had a great deal to do with Iffraaj getting a decent chance at stud. Pastorale’s half-sister Arvola, by Sadler’s Wells, is the dam of a reasonably good sire in English and French highweight Diktat, by Warning. Pastorale’s dam, Park Appeal, by Ahonoora, was champion 2-year-old filly in England and Ireland, and a half-sister to Irish Oaks winner Alydaress, by Alydar, and to Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Desirable, by Lord Gayle. Desirable is the dam of English champion and classic winner Shadayid, by Shadeed. Regardless of how good the pedigree, though, there are very few Group 2 winners (or indeed Group 1 winners) who sire an unbeaten French highweight 2-year-old in their first crop. Wootton Bassett (out of Balladonia, by Primo Dominie) capped his first season in training with a convincing win in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Grand Criterium), but did not win again in four starts at 3. Iffraaj’s first crop also included 2011 Group 3 Italian 1000 Guineas winner Stay Alive (out of Pursuit of Life, by Pursuit of Love) and French Group 3 winner Espirita (Belle Esprit, by Warning). Like most Darley stallions, Iffraaj shuttles to the Southern Hemisphere. He sired New Zealand champion 3-year-old filly Fix (Destined, by Danehill) and four

other stakes winners in his first crop when standing at Haunui Farm in Karaka, New Zealand. Iffraaj suffered through a marked lull after that first-crop success, a market reaction that affects many contemporary stallions due to the declining number and quality of mares they attract after their initial stud seasons, but his fourth crop, conceived after his good-looking first crop of yearlings sold well in 2009, has confirmed that he is a top-class sire in the making. His daughter Rizeena (Serena’s Storm, by Statue of Liberty) got the ball rolling with an impressive victory in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot and followed up by winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at The Curragh in September. Rizeena was expected to confirm her championship qualities in the Group 1 Shadwell Fillies Mile at Newmarket on Sept. 27, and she ran very well indeed, but Iffraaj’s daughter Chriselliam (Danielli, by Danehill) rallied from well off the pace to beat her paternal half-sister to the wire by a length. Two weeks later, Iffraaj’s Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes winner Hot Streak (Ashirah, by Housebuster) fell a half-length short of catching stablemate Astaire, by Intense Focus, in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes, and it will not be long before Iffraaj matches his sire’s career total of four Group 1 winners. In theory, Iffraaj’s fifth crop, 2-year-olds of 2014 conceived after the rousing success of his first crop on the racecourse, should be even better than his current crop of 2-year-olds. If that proves true, it will indeed be something to see. With the exceptions of Machiavellian and Dubawi, the Mr. Prospector male line has had some difficulty in transferring its brilliance to European conditions. Iffraaj may well add to the momentum created by Dubawi’s enormous success in Europe and the Southern Hemisphere.

Indiana breeding sector on upswing
Lawrence Van Garrett/Indiana Downs
Aint She a Saint, Indiana’s top horse in 2012, won the Richmond Stakes for statebreds at Indiana Downs on Oct. 5.
By Nicole Russo In 2007, the Indiana state legislature passed a law approving slot machines at the two pari-mutuel racetracks in the state. In June of the following year, the resulting slots operations were opened at both Indiana Downs in Shelbyville and Hoosier Park in Anderson. Half a decade later, although the racing circuit, stallion market, and revenues in the state continue to shift, the momentum is largely positive for Indiana’s breeding and racing industry, with horsemen expressing optimism. “I think you’ve seen some of the results at the recent sales. Things are certainly looking up for Indiana-breds,” said prominent owner Henry Mast, who, in partnership with trainer Robert Gorham, was the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association’s National Small Breeder of the Year in 2011. “We’re breeding a number of mares ourselves. We’re in the market. We’ll keep looking in the market. We’ll go
down [to the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale] and see what’s available there in terms of Indiana-breds.” Indiana’s racing industry is adjusting to a new look, as Thoroughbred competition in the state has shifted exclusively to Indiana Downs. Both Hoosier Park and Indiana Downs previously held both Thoroughbred and Standardbred meetings. However, Hoosier’s owner, Centaur Gaming, acquired Indiana Downs for $500 million in early 2013 and moved to implement breed-exclusive racing at each track. While Hoosier has just a seven-furlong main track, Indiana Downs has a one-mile dirt oval and a seven-furlong turf course. Trainer Michael Lauer, who, along with his wife, Penny, was recently honored as Indiana Breeder of the Year by the state’s TOBA, was enthused about opportunities the new-look circuit provides to boost the strength of competition. “The turf course definitely helps,” Lauer said. “It will help that it’s a better
location. You have half the card shipping in from Kentucky and Ohio. We have the opportunity to draw more, between Cincinnati, and Lexington, and Churchill Downs [in Louisville], and the training centers – Hoosier was an hour longer [to drive]. It’s a better location for the horse population of the Midwest.” Jessica Barnes, director of racing and breed development for the Indiana Horse Racing Commission (IHRC), also pointed to the pluses of a single-track setup. “I think from the standpoint of the racing and breed-development program, everything is positive and moving forward,” Barnes said. “I’m hearing lots of great comments from the horsemen about the program and about [racing at] one track – the stability it provides. It’s only going to get better.” Centaur is expanding Indiana’s stabling to handle this potential for an increased horse population – two barns have already

Continued from page 19 been completed – and plans to renovate the dirt surface prior to the 2014 meet. Lauer was enthused about the renovations and stressed the importance of company leadership that supports racing, such as Centaur Chairman and Chief Executive Rod Ratcliff. “You have to have [support],” Lauer said. “A lot of places couldn’t care less if you have racing – it’s a pain in their butts. But [Ratcliff is] enthusiastic about racing ... He wants a good product.” Supportive leadership could be crucial in the future, as a change in state law could change the percentage of slots revenue allotted to purses. For gross slots receipts collected by tracks after Dec. 31, the percentage to purses will drop from 15 percent, with the new state law worded to allow at least 10 percent but not more than 12 percent. Centaur has agreed to the full 12 percent for 2014. The agreement must be approved by Jan. 1, and the IHRC has scheduled its next meeting for Oct. 29. With the changed racing circuit, Indiana’s premier day of racing, held on the Indiana Derby card, was contested at Indiana Downs for the first time Oct. 5. The program also put statebreds in the spotlight, as four $85,000 restricted stakes were contested. Indiana’s reigning horse of the year, Aint She a Saint, captured the Richmond Stakes; later that day, her full brother, Needmore Cash, won the Gus Grissom Stakes for owners-breeders Jeff and Sherri Greenhill. Both stakes winners are by Saintly Look and out of the winning Repriced mare Pay the Toll. “Right now, I love it. I think it’s great,” Jeff Greenhill, who also trains both horses, said of the Indiana climate. “I love both these horses. Aint She a Saint is my top earner ever, so I’ve got a special place in my heart for her. But this little horse [Needmore Cash] has been trying to become a racehorse for about a year now.” Indiana’s rewards program is two-tiered, offering incentives and championships for both Indiana-bred and Indiana-sired horses. An Indiana-bred horse finishing in the top three in an open race receives a 40 percent purse supplement, while Indianabred or -sired horses winning any race at the $10,000 claiming level or higher are eligible for a 20 percent hike in breeder or stallion owner awards. Lauer said he believes that strongly supporting both programs will maintain the health of the industry. “We need to see more opportunities,” he said of state-sired races, while stressing that “the state programs allow a lot of
John Engelhardt
Jeff Greenhill (right) trains two Indiana-bred stakes winners sired by Saintly Look. people to be in the game who otherwise would not be in the game.” He also believes that a strong incentive structure will encourage horsemen to put down roots in Indiana. “Horsemen tend to reinvest if they make money,” Lauer said. “They seem to recycle the money in the business.” The North American foal crop has declined every year since 2005 – although the projected drop for 2013 is at a much reduced rate. According to The Jockey Club’s Report of Mares Bred for 2012, 865 mares were bred in Indiana that season, a drop from 898 in 2011, while the number of stallions in the state fell from 79 to 74. According to The Jockey Club’s Live Foal Report, Pass Rush, who stands at Swifty Farms in Seymour, was Indiana’s most active stallion in 2012, covering 47 mares, while Spanish Steps covered 42 mares. Four other stallions covered 30 or more mares in 2012: Article of Faith (33), Strong Hope (31), Desert Warrior (30), and Star Cat (30). Indiana’s stallion market could be poised to respond to a void in 2014, as Spanish Steps, the sire of 2012 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Little Mike, was recently sold to continue his stud career in Saudi Arabia.
The full brother to late, prominent sire Unbridled’s Song most recently stood at Lake Shore Farms in Scottsburg after moving to Indiana for the 2010 breeding season. The state lost another well-known stallion in June, when multiple Grade 1 winner Mecke was euthanized due to the infirmities of old age after neurological issues allowed him to cover only two mares in 2013. He had moved to Hidden Springs Farm in Palmyra in 2012. “There’s an opportunity for a horse or two, if it’s the right horse or two,” Lauer said. “It’s really hard to get mares.” Mast and Gorham stand their own stallion, City Weekend, at Equine Veterinary Hospital of Northern Indiana in Wakarusa. “We think that perseverance does the job,” Gorham said. “You’ve just got to stick it out, and you’ve just got to stay there. If you continue to put the [horses] in front, you’ll get the job done eventually, but it just doesn’t happen overnight with a statebred stallion. In Kentucky, where they breed 100-plus mares, you have such a big volume that you can get it done. But in the statebred program, you never have those kind of numbers. I think perseverance is what you need.”

By Patrick Reed While the success of North American stallions Kitten’s Joy, Speightstown, War Front, Tapit, and Malibu Moon, among others, continues to make headlines each week in U.S. racing and at auctions, the predominant bloodstock story on the international stage continues to be the incredible performance of Coolmore stallion Galileo on all fronts. The 15-year-old European champion son of the legendary Sadler’s Wells and out of Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner and blue-hen broodmare Urban Sea ascended to elite status as a sire several years ago – some would argue as early as 2006 – when Red Rocks and Sixties Icon emerged as 3-year-olds from his first crop to win highprofile Grade/Group 1 stakes. Continued from page 21 lists for four of the past five years, and well on his way to doing so again this year, Galileo is firmly established as a peerless sire of racehorses in Europe and in all other jurisdictions where turf courses are preferred. Those achievements have made him the leading international commercial sire as well, with many of his most expensive foals selling to the Irish powerhouse that stands him at stud. Evidence of Galileo’s might was in abundance during the Book 1 section of the Tattersalls October sale in Newmarket, Europe’s premier yearling auction, which was held Oct. 8-10. This year’s Book 1 edition set a record in gross revenue for a European horse sale, amassing 70,343,000 guineas, or about $118 million. Much of the high-end activity was generated by offspring of two stallions: Juddmonte’s Oasis Dream, a 13-year-old Green Desert horse who over the past half-dozen years has become a top-notch sire of sprinters and middle-distance horses, and Galileo. Those two sires were responsible for eight of the top 10 yearlings sold during the Tattersalls Book 1 section, with four apiece. Overall, Galileo finished Book 1 as the leading sire by a wide margin in both gross and average price, as 30 of his yearlings changed hands for a total of 18,120,000 guineas (about $30.4 million), good for an average price of 604,000 guineas (about $1.01 million). Galileo also was responsible for two record-setters during the three-day Book 1 span. During the opening session, his son out of the stakes-placed Danehill mare Shastye was purchased by Coolmore for 3.6 million guineas, or about $6.08 million. The colt was bred by Newsells Park Stud in Britain and is a full brother to 3-yearold filly Secret Gesture, a listed winner
drf.com/breeding
who has placed in three Group 1 races this year, including a second in the Epsom Oaks. Dam Shastye is a half-sister to 1998 Arc winner and sire Sagamix, Group 1 winner and sire Sagacity, and Group 2 winner Sage et Jolie, the dam of Group 1 winner Sageburg. By backing their own stallion with the purchase, Coolmore broke the record for a European yearling sold at auction, eclipsing the 3.4 million guineas John Magnier’s operation spent on subsequent Hong Kong champion River Dancer (then named Diaghilev) at the Tattersalls Houghton sale in 2000. The record would last for less than 24 hours, however, to be shattered by another Galileo yearling during the second Tattersalls October Book 1 session. This one established a world record for a yearling filly with a price of 5 million guineas (about $8.45 million). She was bought by emerging Qatari international bloodstock player Sheikh Joaan al-Thani under the name of his Al Shaqab Racing. Bred and consigned by Lodge Park Stud, the filly is a full sister to Epsom Oaks winner Was, and their dam, Alluring Park, by Green Desert, is a half-sister to European champion and Epsom Derby winner New Approach. New Approach, along with European champion and multiple Group 1 winner Teofilo, are two of Galileo’s many standout performers on racecourses around the world, and this pair has achieved early success in their stud careers as the sires of 2013 classic winners Dawn Approach and Trading Leather, respectively. Their potential to carry Galileo’s – and by extension, Sadler’s Wells’s and Northern Dancer’s – bloodlines well into the 21st century is perhaps the root cause of Galileo’s enormous popularity at auction. Galileo’s best foal, the brilliant, undefeated, two-time European Horse of the
Year Frankel, will join the fray soon enough, as his first foals are due for the weanling sales a little over a year from now. Based on the phenomenal strength of his initial book, Frankel could very well become his sire’s most formidable competitor at the top of the international market once the 2015 Tattersalls October yearling sale arrives. Galileo’s two other top-10 prices from the Tattersalls Book 1 section also carry superior pedigrees. A filly out of the winning Inchinor mare Frappe sold to Coolmore for 775,000 guineas (about $1.31 million). She is a half-sister to 2012 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Power and is from the family of Group 1 winners Pedro the Great and Footstepsinthesand; the latter won the 2005 English 2000 Guineas and is now a Coolmore stallion. Blandford Bloodstock also purchased a high-priced Galileo yearling, spending 650,000 (about $1.1 million) for a chestnut colt out of Group 1 winner and stakes producer Field of Hope, by Selkirk. Prior to his colossal run at Tattersalls, Galileo made his presence felt at the Keeneland September yearling sale with limited offerings. Five of his yearlings sold for a gross of $2,615,000, and his average of $523,000 led the auction. The most expensive of this cohort was bought by Coolmore for $1.4 million. Consigned by Woods Edge Farm, the dark bay or brown colt is out of the winning Black Tie Affair mare Starlight Dreams and is a halfbrother to European champion and 2009 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Mastercraftsman, who is a freshman sire for Coolmore in 2013. Through the end of the Tattersalls October Book 1 sale, 63 Galileo yearlings have sold at auction in 2013, grossing more than $45.7 million, with an average price of $726,562.

F-t Kentucky set to end season on high note By Joe Nevills Looking back at the sales that have made up the 2013 yearling season, it’s hard not to feel good about the general direction of the Thoroughbred market. The record performances of the Keeneland September yearling sale and many other points on the auction calendar, paired with an apparent renewed vigor among buyers to bid on horses, have taken sales figures to heights not seen in years, dating back to the beginning of the global economic recession in 2008. As the last major sale of the yearling calendar, the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale is in a position to be the walk-off event that completes the market’s return to its pre-crash form. “We’re looking forward to it with great enthusiasm,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning Jr. “The yearling sales this year have been very solid and strong, from the start through the most recent ones. We’ve seen widespread participation [and] lots of interest, and I think that’ll certainly continue for the last yearling sale of the year.” The three-day sale will be held Monday through Wednesday at Fasig-Tipton’s Newtown Paddocks base in Lexington, Ky., with each session beginning at 10 a.m. Eastern. This year’s catalog comprises 1,134 entries, a 10 percent downsizing from last year’s book of 1,254. Many buyers remain wanting for horses as an ultra-competitive yearling season draws to a close. This activity, Browning said, puts the October sale and its participants in a unique position, perhaps more so this year than over the past half-decade. “This is the buyers’ last opportunity to buy yearlings, so there’s pressure on them,” Browning said. “It’s the sellers’ last opportunity to sell their horse at a yearling sale without putting considerable expenses on them to take them to the next level, so there’s pressure, but pressure in a good sense, in that it generally results in very good activity and commerce. The buyers have motivation to buy, and the sellers have motivation to sell, which generally results in a fair marketplace for both parties.” Bloodstock agent Chad Schumer, for one, said he was up for the challenge. “I think the yearling market, in a word, would be described as ‘hot,’ ” Schumer said. “We tried to buy a lot in September,

and we bought several, a couple private purchases for different deals here and there, but it was very tough to buy in the ring. I think the tightened supply coupled with a much stronger economy and people who are a lot more optimistic about things these days – and there are some new players, which always makes a difference – has really driven the market up. “I think the sale in October at FasigTipton will be very strong,” he said. “They’ve done a nice job in providing a catalog with a lot to choose from. Even though there are so many horses, they’ll all be on the sale grounds the weekend before, so that’ll generally give people enough time to see everything and prepare.” Schumer also noted that the makeup of the catalog tends to attract a different kind of buyer for the October sale as opposed to the other major Kentucky yearling sales, in that it has a more regional flavor. In addition to the typical majority population of Kentucky-breds, the sale also has 10 or more yearlings foaled in each of the following states (or provinces): Florida,
Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Ontario, and Pennsylvania. “I think there are some people that target this sale,” Schumer said. “They might look at Keeneland, they might buy at Keeneland, but there are a few buyers that really just show up for this sale. There tends to be a lot of statebreds in that auction – your Illinois-breds, your Ohio-breds, what have you – and there are very specific buyers for those horses and plenty of them, so I think that has really helped the sale in the past.” Last year’s Fasig-Tipton October sale finished in a record-breaking fashion, with all-time highs registered in gross sales, average price, and median price. A total of 880 yearlings were moved for revenue of $22,991,600, up 35 percent from the 2011 edition. The average price of $26,127 was a 9 percent improvement, while the median rose 6 percent to $12,750. The 2012 sale-topper was a Speightstown colt out of the winning Dehere mare Betty’s Pet who went to Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm for $440,000.
