Horses are individuals, but pedigree can provide insight for trainers

By Nicole Russo When the bay Malibu Moon colt walked into Shug McGaughey’s shed row last year, the Hall of Fame trainer already had a blueprint of sorts to follow as he shaped the Phipps Stable and Stuart Janney homebred, named Orb, into a racehorse who would ultimately bring McGaughey his first Kentucky Derby win. McGaughey had trained the colt’s first two dams, winner Lady Liberty and Grade 2 winner Mesabi Maiden. He had also guided the talented but temperamental Coronado’s Quest, who shared bloodlines with Orb, to victories in the 1998 Haskell Invitational and Travers Stakes. The mare Laughter, bred by the Janney family, was the second dam of Coronado’s Quest and the fourth dam of Orb, respectively. “Some of the old Janney families, [such as] Coronado’s Quest’s family, have been a little bit funny,” said McGaughey, who has trained for the Phipps and Janney families since 1985 and has thus handled several generations of families from their prolific program. “And Shug McGaughey

families Continued from page 2 I watched Orb somewhat, just kind of remembering that, to make sure I didn’t overdo it one way or the other. And he got better with racing. He was a little bit more high-strung earlier. And then with racing and [experience] – [on] Derby Day, he was perfect.” This season, Orb has won the Florida Derby and Fountain of Youth Stakes in addition to the Kentucky Derby and has also posted thirds in both the Belmont and Travers, placing him among the leaders of a wide-open 3-year-old male division. McGaughey’s familiarity with the colt’s relatives certainly didn’t hurt as he trained Orb through a busy Triple Crown campaign. Several trainers who have handled multiple horses of similar lineage – generations of mares and their offspring, siblings, or progeny of a stallion – also noted that certain traits are shared within bloodlines. While horses must be handled as individuals, with pedigree by no means an exhaustive guide to training, familiarity with the family can help a trainer efficiently address a quirky personality. “I do see the similarities,” McGaughey said. “I try not to look at it too much to where it might influence me one way or the other. If I see one starting to get a little bit edgy or [show something in] the way he’s training or the way he runs, I’ll have it in the back of my head [that], ‘Oh, well, the mother [behaved] the same way, or the half-brother.’ I do look at it, but I try not to let it influence me.” Ian Wilkes, whose most famous charge is 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Fort Larned, agrees that certain traits can run within families. “Some of the families, you do see different attributes that go hand in hand with the horses,” said Wilkes, who also trains Fort Larned’s half-brother Lent. “You do see that, and it does help to know the family.” Another group of famed Phipps family members shared noticeable quirks in their training. McGaughey trained champion Personal Ensign, by Private Account, who went unbeaten in 13 career starts, and he also handled her full brother, multiple Grade 1 winner and millionaire Personal Flag. Personal Ensign went on to produce four-time Grade 1 winner My Flag, whose sire, champion and classic winner Easy Goer, was also trained by McGaughey. Personal Ensign was also the dam of Grade 1 winners Miner’s Mark and Traditionally, and Grade 1-placed Our Emblem, all by Mr. Prospector. McGaughey trained all four of those Personal Ensign runners, and also trained My Flag’s champion daughter, Storm Flag Flying. Personal Ensign was awarded Broodmare of the Year in 1996. “There were a lot of [traits shared] in Personal Ensign’s offspring,” McGaughey said. “Miner’s Mark, her first foal, I think he was probably late in his 3-year-old season before I ever got him off his back feet. Our Emblem was the same way. And My Flag, she was a great big filly, and she was rough around the barn. So they did share a lot of the quirky things from Personal Ensign.” While similarities within families may

Wise Dan, the 2012 Horse of the Year, continues his winning streak with a victory in the Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga.
provide guidance, trainers cautioned that above all, horses must be approached as individuals. “Well, they’re different characters,” said Charlie LoPresti, speaking about celebrated half-siblings Wise Dan and Successful Dan. “All of my horses are different. As a trainer, every horse has to be treated as an individual. You can’t treat any horse the same.” Wise Dan, by Wiseman’s Ferry, earned Horse of the Year, champion older male, and champion turf male honors for 2012 and is unbeaten in four starts this season, most recently taking the Grade 2 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga. Successful Dan, by Successful Appeal, has grabbed his share of the limelight, capturing four graded stakes and finishing third in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga. Both geldings, homebreds racing for Morton Fink, are out of the winning Wolf Power mare Lisa Danielle. LoPresti also trains two other winning half-siblings owned and bred by Fink: Casino Dan, by Mutakddim, and Enchanting Lisa, by War Chant. Approaching the pair as individuals has helped Fink and LoPresti keep their star runners apart in 2013. Although Wise Dan is a Grade 1 winner on dirt and graded stakes winner on synthetic, his current eight-race win streak has taken place entirely on turf, while Successful Dan’s graded stakes victories have come on dirt and synthetic. “We never tried [Successful Dan] on the grass. We worked him on the grass one day, and he was looking around at the grandstand and the tote board,” LoPresti recalled. “He didn’t have any idea what he
was doing. I think he worked five-eighths in 1:06 and I said, ‘You know what, we’re not going to try the grass.’ ” Wilkes noted that horses from the same female family may still be quite different individuals because of traits passed on from their sires. On June 15, Wilkes sent out Lent to score an impressive maiden victory in his second career start at Churchill Downs. Hours later, he saddled Fort Larned to capture the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap under the twin spires, the horse’s third top-level win. Both runners, homebreds for Janis Whitham, are out of the winning Broad Brush mare Arlucea. Fort Larned, however, is a son of E Dubai, while Lent is by the late Claiborne Farm stallion Pulpit. “He’s a little more hotheaded, this horse,” Wilkes said of Lent. “He’s got a little more Pulpit in him. So he’s a little more higher-strung sort of horse. He’s talented, but he’s got a long way to go to live up to his brother.” While stallions tend to pass on notable traits to their offspring, there can be vast differences there, as well. Mike Maker has handled many runners by turf champion and Ramsey Farm stallion Kitten’s Joy, who as of Sept. 4 was ranked second on the North American general sire list. Maker’s roster includes Grade 1 winner Admiral Kitten; graded stakes winners Derby Kitten and Dean’s Kitten; and stakes winners Artemus Kitten, Gung Ho, and Always Kitten. Among the standouts in 2013 is Kitten’s Dumplings, winner of the Grade 2 Lake George Stakes and Grade 3 Regret Stakes. “She’s a little more high-strung than most [runners by Kitten’s Joy] you get,”
Maker said of Kitten’s Dumplings. “But if they can run like that, who cares? Usually, Kitten’s Joy’s horses are laid-back and calm. Kitten’s Dumplings is just higherstrung. We deal with her, and we’re happy to have her. She gets a window stall, and we just kind of let her do her own thing. We train her early, and we get her out [to the track] – she likes to get out early.” Related horses sharing mental characteristics might also have physical differences, meaning that, although similar in personality, they require a different timetable. New Mexico-bred millionaire Peppers Pride was a multiple stakes winner as a juvenile en route to retiring unbeaten in 19 starts. Her first foal, the 2-year-old Distorted Humor filly Funny Pepper, has not yet started. “She’s not really built like Pepper,” trainer Joel Marr said. “Being by Distorted Humor, maybe sharing more of his traits, she’s going to be a little bit smaller filly than Pepper. Pepper was 17 hands, and this filly doesn’t quite look like her physically. But she has a few of the mental characteristics that [Peppers Pride] had. She’s not stubborn, but she’s very determined, I guess I would say.” Still, Marr does agree that traits can run within families. “Sure they do, just like [with related] people,” Marr said. “If a horse does something on the racetrack or does something quirky, someone will say, ‘Aw, her mother did that.’ It’s kind of a saying, but it’s true, [mares] do pass down a lot of those traits. And being around a mare and then around her offspring or siblings, there are certainly things that stand out that you could identify them by.”

Galileo-Danehill ‘nick’ still hot JOHN P. SPARKMAN During the 2011 racing season, it seemed that practically every good horse in Europe was by Galileo out of a Danehill mare. The great Frankel (Galileo–Kind, by Danehill) dominated his competition, but Roderic O’Connor (Galileo–Secret Garden, by Danehill) and Golden Lilac (Galileo–Grey Lilas, by Danehill) both won classics, and later that season, Maybe (Galileo–Sumora, by Danehill) earned highweight Irish 2-year-old filly honors. Added to 2006 champion European 2-year-old male Teofilo (Galileo–Speirbhean, by Danehill) and 2008 Group 1 Italian Derby winner Cima de Triomphe (Galileo–Sopran Londa, by Danehill), those four 2011 Group 1 winners by Galileo out of Danehill mares brought the total number of top-level winners for the cross to six. This year, Intello (Galileo– Impressionnante, by Danehill) has won the Group 1 French Derby and Romantica (Galileo–Banks Hill, by Danehill) captured the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet, bringing the current count of GalileoDanehill Group 1 winners to eight. That is surely as strong an example of a sire-broodmare sire nick as one can find in contemporary Thoroughbred breeding. It also – and, in fact, already has – ensures that practically anyone with a Danehill mare is going to send them to Galileo. But Galileo is a great sire, almost regardless of the mares he covers. He has led the English sire list four of the past five years (a run interrupted only by Danehill’s son Danehill Dancer in 2009) and sired 154 stakes winners, including 90 group or graded stakes winners, 36 Group 1 winners, and nine champions. Galileo succeeded the late Danehill, leading English sire from 2005-2007, as Europe’s (and the world’s) greatest sire, and it was Danehill who ended the record 13-year streak as leading English sire by Galileo’s sire, Sadler’s Wells. So, are Galileo’s eight Group 1 winners out of Danehill mares a classic illustration of a pedigree “nick” or merely the result of breeding him to high-quality mares by the best stallion available who does not produce excessive inbreeding? Sadler’s Wells led the English broodmare sire list from 2005 through 2011 until Danehill took over leadership in 2012, and obviously most breeders are not going to send them to his best son, Galileo. In other words, is the Galileo–Danehill nick the result of some genetic alchemy or is it merely a reflection of Bull Hancock’s dictum, “Breed the best to the best and hope for the best”? As shown in the accompanying table, regardless of any possible affinity between the genes passed on by Galileo and those contributed by Danehill in any mating, the dams of all eight Group 1 winners by Galileo out of Danehill mares are at least listed stakes winners. Two dams, Grey Lilas, dam of Golden Lilac, and Banks Hill, dam of Romantica, were Group 1 winners themselves, and Banks Hill, of course, was an internation-

al champion and Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner. Impressionnante, the dam of 2013 French Derby winner Intello, won the Group 2 Prix de Sandringham and ran second in the Group 1 French 1000 Guineas, while Sopran Londa, dam of 2008 Italian Derby winner Cima de Triomphe, captured the 1998 edition of the Group 2 Italian 1000 Guineas. The dams of Frankel, Maybe, Roderic O’Connor, and Teofilo all are listed stakes winners. The numbers and percentages in the table are cumulative, whether you scan
right or scan down. Thus the table shows that Galileo has sired 18 named foals out of Group 1- or Grade 1-winning Danehill mares, 31 out of group or graded stakes winners (including the 18 Group 1 or Grade 1 winners), 57 out of stakes-winning mares (including the 31 group or graded stakes winners), etc. Likewise, along the top line of the table, Galileo has sired 18 named foals out of Group 1- or Grade 1-winning Danehill mares, and two are Group 1 winners, three are group or graded stakes winners (including the two Group 1 winners), four
are stakes winners (including the three group or graded winners), etc. The percentages that those hard numbers represent – 11.1 percent Group 1 winners to foals, 16.7 percent group stakes winners, 22.2 percent stakes winners, and 27.8 percent stakes horses – are all ridiculously higher than the averages for the breed, but, of course, they should be. Any time you breed very high-class mares to very high-class stallions, regardless of pedigree, percentages go up dramatically.

DRF BREEDING
Sparkman
Frankel, Europe’s best horse in 2011, is a prime example of successful runners produced by mating Galileo with a Danehill mare.
Continued from page 7 Average for the breed statistics say that 0.2 percent of named foals win Grade 1 or Group 1 races, 0.8 percent win group or graded races, and 3.2 percent win stakes races. Obviously, Galileo and daughters of Danehill, especially stakes-winning daughters, are far better than the average for the breed. Pedigree is important. Any cross of Galileo with a daughter of Danehill ensures 3x4 inbreeding to the great Northern Dancer, the most dominant stallion of the past century. But thousands of their contemporaries carry comparable duplications and they cannot run like Frankel, Teofilo, or Golden Lilac. Each individual mare may introduce other duplications as well from the bottom quarter of the pedigree that contribute positive genes to their offspring. There is, however, a huge difference between the production of the stakeswinning mares by Danehill bred to Galileo and the non-stakes-winning mares. In fact, the production record of non-stakeswinning Danehill mares with Galileo is very similar to Galileo’s overall sire record in terms of the relevant percentages. Galileo has sired 2.1 percent Group 1/ Grade 1 winners overall, abou10 times the average for the breed, but his overall percentage of group or graded stakes winners

This is a strong indication that the critical factor in the Galileo–Danehill nick is the combination of the extraordinary quality of Galileo as a sire and the racing ability of stakes-winning Danehill mares. In other words, pedigree is important, but racing ability is even more important, especially when it is allied to top pedigrees. Breeders, of course, have taken notice of
the eight Group 1 winners by Galileo out of Danehill mares, especially the undefeated Frankel, and sent Danehill mares of every description to Galileo’s court. There are 28 named 2-year-olds of 2013 by Galileo out of Danehill mares. Tapestry, a filly out of 2005 European champion 2-year-old filly Rumplestiltskin, by Danehill, has already won the Group 2 Debutante Stakes and on Sept. 1 ran a troubled second to Rizeena in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. Wonderfully, out of 2001 Empress Stakes winner Massarra, by Danehill, has won the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes. Wonder-

fully’s 3-year-old full brother, Mars, has run third in the 2013 Group 1 St. James’s Palace Stakes and fourth in the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes and was recently sold by the Coolmore partnership to race for South African trainer Mike de Kock’s globe-trotting stable. It should be no surprise if all three of those horses win Group 1 or Grade 1 stakes. In fact, given their race records to date and the expertise and achievements of their connections, it would be surprising if they do not. What almost always happens with successful apparent nicks, however, is that once breeders discover their supposed prepotency – prepotency usually delivered by the high quality of the individual mares involved – they send mares with similar pedigrees but far less racing ability to the stallion involved. The percentage of highquality runners inevitably declines. There are 35 registered Galileo yearlings out of Danehill mares and there are likely to be that many or more among Galileo’s foals of 2013. Obviously, most of those will not be out of stakes-winning mares. Still Galileo is such a great sire and Danehill such a great broodmare sire that there are bound to be other good horses that emerge from the cross, even from lower-quality runners by Danehill. This is one “nick” that is not going to go away.

Keeneland September aims to continue sales resurgence By Patrick Reed Monday marks the beginning of the Keeneland September yearling sale’s 12-session run, and the mammoth auction, the largest yearling sale in the world, will provide the best measure yet as to whether early indicators of the yearling market’s resurgence are genuine. Keeneland arrives on the heels of solidto-spectacular results at Fasig-Tipton’s two boutique yearling sales in Kentucky and Saratoga as well as its New Yorkbred preferred and Texas sales and the middle-market Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. August auction. Somewhat surprisingly, Keeneland cataloged 3,908 yearlings for its September sale, up 8 percent compared with the 2012 sale. This occurred despite an ongoing reduction in North American foal crop numbers that, according to recent Jockey Club estimates, will continue into 2014. A new sale format will be deployed this year that more clearly demarcates Books 1 and 2 and extends the Book 1 segment to four days, beginning on Monday, Sept. 9, and ending on Thursday, Sept. 12, with daily sessions beginning at noon Eastern. Friday, Sept. 13, will be a dark day, and then Keeneland will hold its jam-packed Book 2 segment over two days: Saturday, Sept. 14, and Sunday, Sept. 15. Books 3, 4, and 5 will complete the sale from Monday, Sept. 16, through the final session on Saturday, Sept. 21. All sessions apart from Book 1 will commence at 10 a.m. Last year’s Keeneland September sale attained $219,723,000 in total sales from 2,516 yearlings sold. This marked a 2 percent decrease from 2011, when 2,921 horses sold for $223,487,800. The average rose 14 percent to $87,330 and the median performed even better, rising 50 percent to $45,000. The 2011 and 2012 sales saw Keeneland’s total receipts surge past the $200 million mark after two years in the $191 million to $198 million range, and with a larger catalog in 2013 the sale has a solid chance to exceed its 2012 figures. The final tally will still fall well short of the nearly $328 million generated at the 2008 auction, which was under way when the Wall Street investment bank Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy protection, precipitating a global economic recession that over the next three years severely impacted the bloodstock market. On the other hand, last year’s average nearly matched the 2008 sale’s average of $90,988, and the median actually improved 22 percent on 2008’s comparative figure of $37,000. The 2012 sale also withstood the relative absence of a major player in the international market: Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum, who through his agent John Ferguson purchased only four yearlings for a total of $895,000. His brother, Sheikh Hamdan, through his Shadwell Stud, took up the slack with a sale-leading $8.25 million spent on 17 yearlings, including the $1.65 million Distorted Humor– Mushka sale topper, well ahead of Coolmore agent Demi O’Byrne, who spent

The grounds at Keeneland during last year’s September yearling auction. This year’s sale starts Monday amid a rising market. $4,945,000 for 10 yearlings. In 2011, Ferguson spent $8.87 million on 36 yearlings as leading buyer at the September sale. Sheikh Mohammed remained quiet through the early yearling auctions this summer, as has Coolmore (Ferguson and O’Byrne made only one purchase apiece at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale; Shadwell bought two yearlings). This lack of foreign purchasing interest could continue at Keeneland but will be countered by an active domestic contingent, many of them eyeing the progeny of several firstcrop sires with strong dirt track credentials. Blame, champion older male of 2010 and winner of that year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, and multiple dirt Grade 1 winner Quality Road are the two first-crop sires who have enjoyed the most success in the early yearling sales, each entering Keeneland with a six-figure yearling average. They are joined by other notables such as dual champion Lookin At Lucky, Grade 1 winner Eskendereya, and 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver. As with every Keeneland September sale, the early sessions offer a dizzying array of superbly bred horses, and the later sessions are a bargain hunter’s paradise. Among the Book 1 standouts this year: Hip 98, a Giant’s Causeway colt out of Epsom
Oaks and Irish 1000 Guineas winner Imagine and a half-brother to Group 1 winner Horatio Nelson; Hip 182, an Indian Charlie colt who is a half-brother to red-hot sire Malibu Moon; Hip 311, a Bernardini full sister to To Honor and Serve; Hip 541, an Indian Charlie filly out of Grade 1 winner Take Charge Lady and thus a half-sister to Travers winner Will Take Charge; and Hip 855, a Tiznow half-sister to Horse of the Year Havre de Grace. Results from juvenile graded stakes held over the Labor Day weekend served as more free publicity for Keeneland September, as a trio of Grade 1 winners at Saratoga and Del Mar changed hands at last year’s sale. Strong Mandate (Tiznow–Clear Mandate), dominant winner of the Hopeful at Saratoga, was purchased during the first session for $200,000 by owners Robert Baker and William Mack. The filly Sweet Reason (Street Sense–Livermore Leslie), an equally impressive winner of the Spinaway at the Spa, was offered as Hip 1419 during session five and was purchased by Jeff Treadway for $185,000; she has won her first two starts, both for Treadway, by a combined dozen lengths. She’s a Tiger (Tale of the Cat–Shandra Smiles), game winner of the Del Mar Debutante, went through the ring during last year’s

The gross decreased 2 percent, The average rose 14 percent, and the median was up 50 percent.
