JOHN P. SPARKMAN What is the world’s most international race meeting? For many years, the Breeders’ Cup meeting could claim that title, but that is no longer true. The Dubai World Cup meeting, which benefits from easier access to Southern Hemisphere racing countries as well as more total purse money, now serves as a
showplace for horses bred and trained in more different countries than any other meeting. The Breeders’ Cup might not long even rank second by that measure. It has been well documented that the proliferation of autumn international meetings in England, France, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan over the past decade has diverted some of the world’s best horses – horses who previously had few other international options – from the Breeders’ Cup. Last weekend’s Prix de l’Arc de Triom-
phe meeting at Longchamp in Paris made its bid for international honors by attracting horses trained in six different countries, plus a Brazilian-bred Argentine Group 1 winner, Going Somewhere, who was transferred from Juan Etchechoury’s stable in Argentina to David Smaga at Lamorlaye, France, specifically so he could run in the Arc. The origins of the runners at the Arc meeting, which included seven Group 1 races and four Group 2 races over two

The countries of origin of the first nine home in the Arc itself illustrate just how international topclass international racing has become. The brilliant, undefeated Arc winner, Treve (Motivator–Trevise, by Anabaa), is French-bred and -trained, but the next eight home were all born elsewhere: Orfevre (Japan), Intello (Germany), Kizuna (Japan), Penglai Pavilion (United States), Al Kazeem (Great Britain), Ruler Of the World (Ireland), Flintshire (Great Britain), and Going Somewhere (Brazil). The 11 group races on the two days produced winners born in six different countries: France (Treve, Cirrus des Aigles, Valirann), Great Britain (Moonlight Cloud, Maarek), Ireland (Pollyana, Ebiyza, Indonesienne), Germany (Altano), Japan (Karakontie), and the United States (Dalkala). In truth, though, at the top level of international racing – at least everywhere but the United States – country of birth hardly matters. Karakontie, the winner of the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Grand Criterium), is perhaps the best example of the fluid approach of the world’s premier breeders. The 2-yearold colt was is a homebred for the Niarchos family, whose breeding operation is based primarily at its historic Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard near Falaise, France, and at the Oak Tree division of Lane’s End in Kentucky. His late sire, Bernstein, by Storm Cat, stood at Castleton Lyons in Lexington, Ky., and shuttled to Argentina during the autumn, where he led the sire list in 2006 and 2007. Stavros Niarchos, the founder of the family’s bloodstock operation, purchased Karakontie’s fourth dam, Pasadoble, by Prove Out, for $45,000 at the 1980 FasigTipton Kentucky July sale of selected yearlings and bred and raced Pasadoble’s all-time great daughter, Miesque, by Nureyev. Niarchos, of course, also bred Miesque’s classic-winning son, Kingmambo, by Mr. Prospector, and daughter, East of the Moon, by Private Account, as well as their stakes-winning sibling Moon Is Up, by Woodman. Niarchos sent Moon Is Up, the dam of South African Group 1 winner Amanee, by Pivotal, to Japan to be bred to 13-time leading Japanese sire Sunday Silence, but the resulting filly, the Japanese-bred Sun Is Up, was unplaced in France. That has not stopped her from becoming an excellent broodmare, and Karakontie is
her third stakes winner following listed stakes winners Bottega, by Mineshaft, and Sunday Sunrise, by Lemon Drop Kid. The Niarchos family also bred and raced 2004 Arc winner and European champion 3-year-old Bago, by Nashwan, and sold him to stand at Shizunai Stallion Station in Japan. They chose to send Sun Is Up back to Japan to be bred to Bago in 2011, which is why Karakontie carries (Jpn) after his name and not (USA). Karakontie is trained at Chantilly by veteran English-born French trainer Jonathan Pease, who, by the way, was also the trainer of Bago. In the Lagardere, Karakontie, the winner of the Group 3 Prix la Rochette four weeks ago, had to chase down the front-running Noozhoh Canarias, who was bred in Spain by Grupo Bolanos Gran Canaria, owned by Juan Carlos Bolanos Marrero, and trained at La Zarzuela by Enrique Leon Penate. Noozhoh Canarias’s sire, Caradak, by Desert Style (by Green Desert, by Danzig), won the 2006 Group 1 Prix de la Foret for Godolphin before he was sold to stand at stud in Spain, where he has quickly become the king of a relatively tiny breeding industry. The pedigree of Noozhoh Canarias’s dam, Noozhah, is right from the international mainstream, however, since her sire is Singspiel, by Sadler’s Wells’s son In the Wings, and the sires of her next two dams are Rainbow Quest and Fabulous Dancer. And, indeed, the overall results of the 11 races fall right in line with the most powerful international pedigree trends of the past four decades. As shown in the accompanying chart of the sire lines of the Arc meeting winners, seven of the 11 winners trace in tail-male line to Northern Dancer, two to Mr. Prospector, one to Ahonoora, and one to Sharpen Up (also a grandson of Mr. Prospector’s grandsire, Native Dancer). Northern Dancer, of course, stands at the head of by far the most dominant male line on the international scene, and Mr. Prospector ranks a clear second in that category. The Northern Dancer male line annually accounts for more than 60 percent (and rising) of all European group stakes winners, and Mr. Prospector generally about 15 percent (a percentage that is also increasing, principally because of his great-grandson Dubawi), so the Arc meeting sire line results are entirely in keeping with the current state of the European breeding industry.

Continued from page 16 The male line of Ahonoora is the last, fading vestige of the once-great male line of Herod, and Group 2 Prix Dollar winner Cirrus des Aigles, a highweight in France, England, and the United Arab Emirates during 2011-2012, is its best representative in decades. Sadly, Cirrus des Aigles is a gelding (and thus barred from participation in the Arc), and there is no obvious top-class young sire from Ahonoora’s male line who looks likely to extend the male line of Herod into another generation. Indonesienne, the winner of the Group 1 Criterium des Pouliches Prix Marcel Boussac, is another illustration of both the international character and the American roots of a wide swath of Europe’s best racehorses. Her sire, Muhtathir, the winner of the 2000 Group 1 Prix Jacques Le Marois, was by far the best son of his sire, Elmaamul, one of the best sons of Diesis, by Sharpen Up. Indonesienne’s dam, Mydarshaan, is by Darshaan, a grandson of American-bred Mill Reef, out of Mypreciousprospect, by Mr. Prospector. As is always the case, the distribution of broodmare sire lines at the Arc meeting was a bit more varied. The Northern Dancer male line accounted for four of the 11 winning broodmare sires, but the other seven came from seven different male lines: Ahonoora, Blushing Groom, Halo, Never Bend, Seattle Slew, Sharpen Up, and Surumu.

This eclectic, international character of European breeding and racing lends their horses an advantage largely absent these days from the American breeding and racing scene, which shows only scant signs of emerging from two decades of somewhat isolationist behavior. And if the plans for future “Super Group 1” medication-free races proposed at the meeting of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities in Paris during Arc

week bear fruit, American racing and breeding is likely to become even more isolated and the Breeders’ Cup less international and much less important to the Thoroughbred breed. The 11 group stakes winners from the Arc weekend all boast an American-bred ancestor within the first three generations of their pedigrees. As the biggest horse-racing events become more and more international, however, that may become a much rarer phenomenon.

The opening weekend at Keeneland’s fall meet produced its usual share of compelling story lines, many of them related to the upcoming Breeders’ Cup World Championships, as reigning Eclipse Award winners Wise Dan and Groupie Doll both suffered defeats in their final preps. Speculation on the chances of Ken and Sarah Ramsey surpassing their record number of wins as owners set during Keeneland’s spring meet also served as discussion fodder, as the central Kentucky mainstays got off to an uncharacteristically quiet start on opening Friday but broke through with four winners Saturday and Sunday. One of the Ramseys’ winners, We Miss Artie, became the co-centerpiece of the biggest breeding story of FallStars Weekend as the second half of a Grade 1 double for young WinStar stallion Artie Schiller in Keeneland’s two marquee 1 1/16mile stakes for juveniles. We Miss Artie captured the Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity on a rainy Saturday with a late rally under John Velazquez, scoring his second win in four starts and rebounding from a disappointing effort in the Grade 2 With Anticipation at Saratoga. One day earlier, Canadian shipper My Conquestadory weaved her way through traffic and accelerated quickly in the final sixteenth to win the Darley Alcibiades going away. That marked her second career win and her second stakes win, following a 3 1/4-length victory in the Grade 2 Summer Stakes over Woodbine’s turf Sept. 14. Both horses showed a nice turn of foot in the stretch and appear to be solid contenders for Breeders’ Cup races, despite their relatively modest Beyer Speed Figures (70

Continued from page 20 for We Miss Artie and 74 for My Conquestadory). The pair certainly elevated Artie Schiller’s profile in a 24-hour span, as they became his first Northern Hemisphere Grade 1 winners from four crops of racing age and tacked a hefty $480,000 onto his 2-year-old runners’ earnings for 2013. As a result, Artie Schiller vaulted to a firm second on the North American juvenile earnings list through Wednesday, $197,663 behind Harlan’s Holiday. Artie Schiller was bred in Kentucky by Haras du Mezeray, the prominent French operation headed by the late Paul de Moussac, and was raised at Mill Ridge Farm. A son of Irish champion and 2002 leading North American sire El Prado, Artie Schiller entered the national scene right on the heels of El Prado’s accomplished son Kitten’s Joy, the Ramseys’ champion turf male of 2004. Artie Schiller’s own bloodlines augured well for his aptitude at the highest level, as he was out of a multiple Grade 1-winning dam, Hidden Light, and a multiple Grade 1-winning second dam, Tallahto, both of whom tallied graded stakes wins on turf. The horse lived up to his pedigree, winning 10 of 22 starts and earning more than $2 million for William Entenmann and Denise Walsh. Entenmann purchased Artie Schiller for $67,000 from Mill Ridge, representing de Moussac, at the 2002 Keeneland September yearling sale, and initially the colt was tried in both dirt and turf races, winning twice on grass and finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Remsen on dirt as a 2-year-old. Once switched permanently to turf, Artie Schiller became one of the best in his division, finishing in the money in 14 of his remaining 17 starts and scoring eight wins. Seven of those wins came in stakes, four of them Grade 2s. The Jimmy Jerkens trainee could not recover from a rough trip in his first attempt at the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Lone Star Park in 2004, finishing 12th, but everything came together a year later at his Belmont Park home base, where he split horses in early stretch and ended eventual champion turf male Leroidesanimaux’s eight-race winning streak with a three-quarter-length victory in the Mile. Winless in three graded stakes starts in 2006, Artie Schiller was retired to Hurricane Hall near Georgetown, Ky., for 2007. The farm was at the time co-owned and operated by Ben P. Walden Jr., the person formerly responsible for much of Vinery Stud’s growth and success during the 1980s and 1990s. Walden took Artie Schiller to his new Pauls Mill operation for the

Artie Schiller moved to WinStar in late 2011, just as he was wrapping up an auspicious year as the eighth-ranked secondcrop sire in North America. His best runner to date, Mr. Commons, surfaced in the spring of 2011 with a third in the Santa Anita Derby but appeared to be a potential world conqueror when switched to turf that summer in the Oceanside Stakes on Del Mar’s opening-day card. Now, two years later, the 5-year-old has yet to break through at the top level but still has earned more than $865,000 and tallied two Grade 2 wins and seven graded stakes placings on grass. Still in training, Mr. Commons headlines a solid group of runners for Artie Schiller. That group includes several stakes winners in Australia from Artie Schiller’s extensive time as a shuttle stallion, led by last year’s Group 1 Rosehill Guineas winner, Laser Hawk. We Miss Artie’s and My Conquestadory’s success further burnishes Artie Schiller’s reputation as a promising turf and synthetic sire, although they have much left to prove in their increasingly competitive divisions. Interestingly, as this issue went to press, the trainers of both horses – Todd Pletcher for We Miss Artie and Mark Casse for My Conquestadory – had left open the possibility that their charges will contest the Breeders’
Cup Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies, respectively, if they train well on dirt, rather than the BC Juvenile Turf and Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita in three weeks. The Ontario-bred We Miss Artie clearly has the more turf-centric pedigree of the twosome. His dam, Athena’s Gift, by Fusaichi Pegasus, picked up her two career wins on turf, and his second dam, the useful racemare Russian Bride, by Saratoga Six, won twice from her last four starts in 1993-94 after switching to turf, including capturing a listed event at Belmont for her only stakes win. Russian Bride is a half-sister to Risen Raven, the winner of the Group 2 German Oaks in 1994 and a successful broodmare whose daughters have produced multiple English Group 2 winner Trumpet Major and multiple Italian stakes winner Rastignano. Euphrosyne, the winner of the Grade 2 Long Island Handicap in 1981, is another notable relative. My Conquestadory is the first foal to race out of the Malibu Moon mare Golden Artemis, who placed twice in dirt stakes in New York in 2008-09. My Conquestadory’s second dam, Native Trinket, by Dove Hunt, won six times on dirt from 27 career starts at Midwest tracks in the early 2000s and is a half-sister to Meadow Gem, who won the Grade 3 Duchess Stakes on what was then Woodbine’s main dirt track in 2001. My Conquestadory’s third dam, the winning Exclusive Gem mare Miss Gem, is a half-sister to Grade 2 Frank De Francis Memorial Dash winner Kelly Kip.

oBs fall mixed sale aims to ride momentum by Joe nevills As the North American sales calendar begins to turn from the yearling season into the breeding stock season, Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. President Tom Ventura is hopeful that the run of good fortune established in recent auctions will carry into the OBS fall mixed sale. The two-day sale will begin Tuesday with a consignor-preferred session starting at 1 p.m. Eastern, and will conclude Wednesday with an open session beginning at 10:30 a.m. The sale rides an incredible wave of market momentum, both locally and industry-wide. All three of the OBS juvenile sales this spring posted record figures, and several major yearling sales across the country finished with numbers not seen since before the economic swoon in 2008. “The 2-year-old market was very strong, and the yearling market followed suit,” Ventura said. “For the mixed sales, I think the quality will be in demand, and part of that is the tightening of the foal crops. The supply has shrunk significantly from four or five years ago, and the market in general is a little better, so you’ve got some things working in your favor to believe that it’ll continue for the time being.” While optimistic about the sale’s prospects, Ventura was sure to note that the long-term nature of the breeding stock auction market was cause to maintain reasonable expectations. “The mixed sales are usually slowest to respond to the changes in the marketplace because of the length of time for mares to actually have their foals, and they’re the furthest from the racetrack,” he said. “If we have a solid sale, that’ll just be another indicator that the market has rebounded.” This year’s catalog features 386 horses, 8 percent fewer than last year’s edition. The sale will be one of the first opportunities for buyers to buy weanlings from the first crops of several young sires at public auction. Among the stallions who will be represented by their first foals in this year’s sale are Adios Charlie, Big Drama, Cape Blanco, Crown of Thorns, First Dude, General Quarters, Gone Astray, J P’s Gusto, Paddy O’Prado, Telling, and Wilburn. “These stallions either had their race record, their pedigree, or both that have been their selling points,” Ventura said.

walden re-enters stallion Business Acquires I Want Revenge to stand at Pauls Mill farm in Versailles, Ky. by Joe nevills In the days leading up to the Keeneland September yearling sale, the Pauls Mill shed row was a popular destination for two reasons. First, the consignment of Ben Walden Jr. included a half-brother to Grade 1 winners Mine That Bird and Dullahan. Second, he was serving pizza. While a relentless stream of interested parties and tire-kickers examined the high-profile Giant’s Causeway colt – a tall, strapping chestnut cast from the same mold as Dullahan – Walden was on the phone under what little shade the barn’s awning offered, answering questions about another horse. Earlier that morning, Walden had announced the acquisition of Grade 1 winner I Want Revenge with business partner Pat Madden, giving Pauls Mill in Versailles, Ky., its first stallion since 2011. Naturally, his phone was about as active as the yearling in front of him. “It was great to hear from friends and breeders that had been a part of the stallions we’ve put forth in the past and brought forward in the marketplace,” Walden said. “It was great to hear from them and have them pat me on the back and say, ‘Good job. Glad that you got another horse.’ It was a good day out there.” Walden’s four-stall stallion barn had been empty since in 2011 when he sold Bellamy Road, Artie Schiller, U S Ranger, and Summer Bird to WinStar Farm, whose president is his brother Elliott. Walden called it, for lack of a better phrase, an offer he couldn’t refuse from an economic standpoint. With one of the stalls now filled, Walden said he and his partners have looked at other candidates to join the Pauls Mill stallion roster. Walden’s approach to the stallion market today could be considered downright minimalist from the days when he stood as many as 30 horses at Vinery, which Walden started in 1986 and built into one of the country’s top breeding

I Want Revenge raced for five seasons, with three wins in 14 starts for $928,000. operations and yearling consignors. Scaling back, however, has not mellowed Walden’s mind for marketing and selling horses. “I have never been blessed with a lot of talent as a horseman,” he said modestly, noting that the gifted eye for bloodstock that his father possessed went instead to his brother. “I’ve always loved marketing, and I’ve always loved sales. I’ve always loved selling a horse or selling a stallion to my customers. It’s easy to sell something when you love it and believe in it and are on board.” Another opportunity for Walden to utilize his marketing chops presented itself in I Want Revenge. A 7-year-old son of Stephen Got Even, the horse is best known for being the morning-line favorite in the 2009 Kentucky Derby following a tough-as-nails win in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial. The horse’s career was
stalled, however, when he was scratched the morning of the Derby due to an ankle injury. Prior to his injury, I Want Revenge recorded a win in the Grade 3 Gotham and a runner-up finish in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity. Upon his return to the handicap division, he finished in the money in four of six races. I Want Revenge was retired after five seasons of racing, with three wins in 14 starts for $928,000. He raced six times total at ages four, five, and six. “With a few years having elapsed, I’ve been quietly watching the horizon and looking for horses,” Walden said. “This horse was easy to get inspired over. He had so much talent.” Following his retirement, I Want Revenge was sent to Blackwood Stables in Versailles, where Walden became aware that he was on the market as a stallion prospect. Walden acknowledged that the

That will be our job as promoters of the stallion to answer those questions in a clear and direct way and to deal with that little element of resistance. “Every stallion has their parts about them that are least attractive. When you’re marketing, there are always issues you want to work around and work through, and, of course, there are strengths. People’s memories have been long with respect to recognition of talent and recognition of what a big-time horse he was, so those are positives. We’ll
balance those and put a good, fair price on him.” Walden has further ties to the 2009 Kentucky Derby beyond his new stallion. From the same race in which I Want Revenge was scratched came longshot winner Mine That Bird, out of the Smart Strike mare Mining My Own. Walden bought a half-interest in the mare in November 2012, along with her now-yearling Giant’s Causeway colt who sold in September to Zayat Stables for a consignment-leading $675,000. Mining My Own, co-owned by Phil and Judy Needham and Bena Halecky, was bred to first-year sire Bodemeister for the 2014 foaling season. She is the dam of three winners from four foals to race, including her two notable Grade 1 winners and stakes winner Brother Bird. Walden marveled at the monumental odds of a mare producing two foals to
hit the board in the Kentucky Derby, as Mining My Own did with Mine That Bird in 2009 and third-place Dullahan in 2012. “The mare hasn’t missed,” he said. One of the most identifiable aspects of Walden’s operation during sales season is the warmers that line the outside of his shed rows containing pizzas with various toppings – a sight for sore eyes and rumbling stomachs during marathon sales. Again, the tradition he started at Vinery was all about finding new ways to sell horses. “I just got the idea that people are out there beating their brains out, trying to wade through all these horses, and to do it right, they had little time for much else,” he said. “A crispy piece of pizza under a warmer is something they can easily grab on the fly, and if they appreciate it, they might even sit down at my barn and see a horse that they hadn’t planned to see.”
