SENSIRA RESORT & SPA
RIVIERA MAYA
BY STEVE DRAKEAs grandparents, my wife and I have always cherished family time. But our recent multi-generational trip to Sensira Resort & Spa in Riviera Maya was an experience that truly epitomized the joy of family. Accompanied by our daughter, her husband, and our two precious granddaughters, we embarked on a vacation that promised luxury, relaxation, and a treasure trove of memories.
Our journey began the moment we stepped into the lavish confines of the Sensira Resort & Spa. The staff welcomed us with warm smiles and refreshing drinks, a small gesture that set the tone for our stay. But the real awe struck us when we entered the luxury Diamond Suite. This suite was a blend of elegance and comfort, with panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea that left us spellbound. It was more than we could have hoped for, a perfect setting for our family retreat.
THROUGH THE LENS OF THE SEASONED AND THE NEW... THE WORLD UNFOLDS UNIQUELY
Multi-generational travel, involving various family generations, is crucial for strengthening familial bonds, especially in a world where families often live apart. Such trips offer precious time for building relationships and creating enduring memories, essential for maintaining family ties. This type of travel serves as an educational experience, especially for younger members who are exposed to different cultures, languages, and histories, allowing older family members to share their wisdom and stories, thereby bridging generational gaps. It promotes personal growth and offers new perspectives for all ages, fostering mutual respect and understanding.
These journeys also help in establishing family traditions and legacies, embedding a sense of identity and belonging. Accommodating diverse needs and interests within the family nurtures empathy and consideration. The emotional support and shared experiences of traveling together deepen intergenerational connections and can improve the mental and physical health of older members, while offering enriching experiences for the younger ones.
Staying in the Diamond Suite at Sensira Resort & Spa further elevates the luxury experience. This one-of-akind suite features a rooftop terrace with a private pool and whirlpool tub, offering panoramic views of the Mexican Caribbean. The 2,708 square-foot suite sleeps up to 7 people and includes two bedrooms, 2-1/2 bathrooms, and an adjoining guest room. The suite’s amenities, like a living room, dining room, kitchen, office space, and pool table, along with dedicated concierge and butler services, aromatherapy and pillow menus, make it an epitome of luxury and comfort
Spacious and beautifully appointed, it became the gathering spot for our evening recaps. We shared stories of our day, laughed at the grandkids’ antics, and planned for the days ahead. The suite’s comfort made these moments even more enjoyable, a luxury we all appreciated.
Our days at Sensira were a beautiful balance of activity and relaxation. Mornings often began with a leisurely breakfast, where the spread was as delightful as the view. The resort’s dining options were a gastronomic adventure, catering to our varied tastes and introducing our granddaughters to new flavors.
EVERY
MILE TRAVELED TOGETHER
WEAVES A TAPESTRY OF MEMORIES
The heart of our trip, however, was the quality time spent with family. Sensira’s family-friendly ethos shone through its array of activities. The grandkids were thrilled with the Aquapark, splashing around under the careful watch of their parents. My wife and I preferred the quieter corners of the resort, often lounging by the adults-only pool, indulging in the serenity it offered.
What I appreciated most about Sensira was its ability to bring together different generations. The resort had something for everyone – from the lively Adventure Club that kept our granddaughters engaged to the spa where my daughter and wife spent a rejuvenating afternoon.
One of the most remarkable aspects of our stay was the resort’s natural beauty. We took walks along the beach, the grandkids building sandcastles while we admired the horizon. These moments, simple yet
profound, were reminders of the beauty of life and the joy of spending it with loved ones.
Midway through our stay, we decided to explore beyond the resort. The concierge service was exceptional, arranging a family excursion to a nearby ecological park. It was a day filled with learning and adventure, a chance for our granddaughters to connect with nature and for us to marvel at the wonders of the Riviera Maya.
Insperation Spa in an oasis of relaxation and rejuvenation. Within this sanctuary, guests are invited to indulge in a myriad of treatments designed to harmonize the body, mind, and spirit, encapsulating the essence of luxury and tranquility.
A centerpiece of the spa experience is the meticulously designed hydrotherapy circuit, an immersive ritual that harnesses the healing powers of water to revitalize the senses. This therapeutic journey begins with a warm welcome in the form of a soothing soak, easing guests into a state of calm. The circuit then guides them through various stations, including a dynamic pool equipped with hydromassage stations that target different areas of the body, providing relief and promoting circulation.
Dining at Sensira was an experience in itself. Each restaurant offered a unique ambiance and menu, and we made it a point to try as many as possible. The kids particularly loved the themed dinners, where they could dress up and immerse themselves in different worlds.
As our vacation neared its end, I found myself reflecting on the moments that stood out. The laughter of our granddaughters as they played in our private rooftop, the peaceful afternoons my wife and I spent by the sea, the family dinners where we shared stories and plans – these were the moments that defined our trip.
On our last night, we gathered on the balcony of our Diamond Suite, watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a fitting end to a remarkable journey, a quiet moment to soak in the beauty around us and the joy of being together. We took a family photo, a memento of our time at Sensira, a reminder of the memories we had created.
In retrospect, our trip to Sensira Resort & Spa was more than just a vacation. It was a celebration of family, an embrace of togetherness, and a testament to the joy that comes from shared experiences. As grandparents, seeing our family bond in such a beautiful setting was a gift, a reminder of the preciousness of time spent with loved ones. Sensira didn’t just provide a backdrop for our holiday; it played an integral part in creating a tapestry of moments that we would treasure forever.

WHY LOS CABOS SHOULD BE YOUR NEXT WELLNESS ESCAPE
BY JOSIE JOY SALDATLOS CABOS
It seems as if the entire idea of traveling has shifted into more of an escape of the everyday bustle. The collective dream to close your eyes, take a breath and shift the attention inward – a true healing experience. Los Cabos offers travelers year-round vitamin D, vivid blue waters and lush green mountain ranges for the ultimate setting to reset your mind and body.
Located at the tip of the Baja California Peninsula, Los Cabos is a Mexican hot spot unlike any other. From farm-totable dining experiences to roaming the historic and colorful town of San José del Cabo there is a rooted feeling of connection - to the food, culture and to oneself. Through a little rest, restore, play and nourishment I found my tranquil escape in Los Cabos.
REST
Whether you choose to stay in Cabo San Lucas in one of the various beach-side resorts or in the historic town of San José del Cabo, accommodation options are endless and cater to various types
of travelers. If you seek rest and luxury service on the sea, Pueblo Bonito resorts are for you.
The architecture and layout of Pueblo Bonita Sunset is structured onto a hillside which offers stunning vantage points from any room. With the sunrise and sunset visible from the balcony I enjoyed moments basking in the soft orange lighting illuminating the resort. I found peace with the sounds of waves crashing in the background and view right onto their private beach, Sunset Beach. Nextdoor to Sunset is Pueblo Bonito’s adultsonly golf and spa retreat, Pueblo Bonito Pacifica. This resort alludes romance – from the elegant architecture of neutral colors and clean lines to the quiet ocean front setting and exclusive 201 rooms. This is also home to the Armonia Spa and an on-site cactus garden and restoration project to preserve and grow native and endangered plant species.
If you are planning a destination wedding, Pueblo Bonito has an in-house team and various packages with support to make your special day seamless on the seaside. The beach may not be suitable for swimming, but there are complimentary shuttles from the resort to other Pueblo Bonito sister resorts where they have swimmable beaches.
SPA EXPERIENCE AT ARMONIA SPA
Armonia Spa located in the Pueblo Bonita Pacifica is a definite stop while in Los Cabos. Armonia, simply meaning harmony offers guests a chance to unwind using local herbs and organic products. Their newest item on the menu - The Baja Ancestral Ritual. The treatment pulls inspiration from century old practices of the Baja where they stimulate a sweat lodge to detox and release toxins through steam. The ritual begins with cleansing of the room with herbs and sweet earthy sage and rosemary. Next, an exfoliation with sea salts followed with a delicate massage of w butter and essential oils. The kettle clicks across the room and a tea is brewed with herbs from native plants. After the tea has set, the steam detox begins with the pouring of the tea onto the body and wrapping of a plastic layer to keep the steam close for utmost benefits. The experience was almost like a rebirth as I left the spa feeling the softest and calmest I have been in years. After your treatment the spa offers guests hot and cold plunge pools, sauna and spa tubs.
SOUND EXPERIENCE WITH SOUND HEALING LOS CABOS
There is something to be said for ancient forms of healing, they have been around for centuries for a reason. Javier Montiel with Sound Healing Los Cabos is on a journey of healing people through the ancient practice of sound. The healing started laying down on a mat and having my eyes covered. From there Montiel helped bring the focus inward to the breath and lit white sage and cinnamon to cleanse the energy and set the tone. It was from here that the playing of the Tibetan singing bowls began. Throughout the hour, Montiel played various ancient instruments creating a detox and cleansing of emotions through sound. Montiel believes that the Tibetan bowls, gong and bells that he plays are an intelligent medicine that knows exactly what each individual needs no matter the size of group attending – each person will have a unique healing journey suited to them. It is through sound we and heal the deep emotions stored within us, restoring our nervous system and bringing us back to a calm peaceful state.
NOURISH
LA FRIDA
La Frida restaurant located in the Pueblo Bonito Sunset pairs the flavors of Mexican cuisine with an elevated and romantic dining experience. Colorful décor, dimmed mood-lighting and artistic table settings set the tone as you enjoy local tastes of the sea and land. I highly recommend the Totoaba fish. Make sure you leave room for dessert – especially the corn cake with tres leches sauce. There is no surprise why La Frida is one of four Four-Diamond restaurants in Los Cabos. Once you experience it, you will agree too as the delight lingers on the pallet leaving you wanting more. For a pre-dining experience and to expand your knowledge on local beveragescheck out the Lobby bar for a mezcal and tequila tasting!
MONDE CARDON
The journey of Monte Cardon starts with the passion of young boy and his desire to become a chef.
“There was this pizzeria around the corner from where I lived. At five years old I used to go there and put on an apron and pretend I was the cook.” –Ubaldo Martinez
Fast forward to many years working in the industry and now currently in the launch of his very own culinary endeavor, Martinez’s dream has come true.
Martinez and wife Ourem Urdapilleta stumbled upon their current restaurant property while out for a hike in the mountains. Atop a mountain in the desert with vantage of the Cortez sea and endless green foliage was where this story begins. The 26 acre off-the-grid property became home to their newest endeavor, Monte Cardon.
When you first start your journey to this restaurant you might feel as if you are traveling into the middle of nowhere –you kind of are. Monte Cardon is not just a restaurant – it is a destination offering a taste of the Baja Mediterranean and an unforgettable experience to patrons. After a year and a half of construction, Monte Cardon is finally open to the public. Rooted from the farm-to-table concept and promoting available local ingredients from nearby farmers, the menu is ever changing to create a personalized adventure for the mind and palette. There is something grounding about preparing a meal yourselfchopping, mixing, searing, baking and appreciating the time and freshness of the meal. While there, my favorite taste of the evening was the catch of the day – mahi-mahi in a sweet and savory ponzu sauce which we prepared and cooked before enjoying the meal. If you seek an unparalleled experience for weddings, large groups, intimate occasions or cooking classes – Monte Cardon is for you!

Even if you are not a golfer, the views from the course and variation in landscape is worth a visit. The course starts on the beach and then slowly climbs up a cliff giving golfers a challenge at each of the eighteen holes. From desert terrain to soaring hills overlooking the ocean, this is one of the most breathtaking courses you will not want to miss on your trip! Luckily, if you are new to golf Quivira offers golf lessons for private or groups.
ARTISTIC EXPRESSION YANDI MONARDO
Experience a colorful form of selfexpression with artist, Yandi Monardo. Born in Uruguay, Monardo has had a passion for the arts from a young age. Driven by educating individuals worldwide on how to express themselves through art, Monardo finds his inspiration from local history and the vivid culture of Los Cabos.
Each piece Monardo creates he approaches with various mediums such as: natural pigments, oils and acrylics. Instead of applying the medium onto a typical canvas, Monardo plays with a variety of textures including wood, acetate sheets and paint canvas allowing different lines, colors and shapes to take form. It is evident when speaking with Monardo that he wants the evoke viewers with the natural wonders and beauty of Los Cabos and the Baja California. Through workshops and exhibits in his gallery, Monardo finds purpose in the immersive art experience and finds joy helping people express themselves in a new way.

BY IRIS BROOKSIslands may bring to mind a tropical paradise with seaside scenery dominated by palm trees swaying in the breeze and sweet-smelling flowers in a rainbow of colors perfuming the air. But surprisingly, it is the northern European country of Sweden that has the most islands in the world. There are over 200,000 of them, (many are uninhabited, rocky outcrops) with the capital city Stockholm embodying a14-island archipelago. The thousands of islands in the country were formed after the Ice Age by the eventual retreat of glaciers. Today these three outstanding Swedish islands, Djurgarden, Lidingo, and Skeppsholmen, are associated with a cultural heritage spanning centuries, are well worth a visit.
SWEDEN
DJURGARDEN
Djurgarden, literally “animal garden” or “deer garden,” is an island within Stockholm. It originally served as a royal game park for King John III in the 16th century. Now it is a tranquil oasis in Stockholm and filled with museums.
Skansen is the world’s oldest open-air museum (dating from 1891). It features costumed interpreters introducing crafts and aspects of daily life from centuries past at historic houses dotting the cobblestone lanes of the extensive property. You can watch a glassblower using traditional tools, print shop workers creating seasonal cards, and

enjoy the Swedish custom of fika–an extended coffee and cake break–at the intimate Cafe Petissan, tasting a scrumptious cinnamon pastry (kanelbulle) accompanied by a satisfying, rich cup of hot chocolate. The well-loved tradition of fika, a time to slow down, has led to an annual observance celebrating Cinnamon Bun Day on October 4, but luckily these tasty treats are accessible year-round.
The immersive Winter Lights Walk recently premiered at Skansen as a seasonal offering. It is not the experience of colorful ribbons in the sky created by the somewhat elusive Northern Lights of nature’s creation. The venue is transformed by the illumination of multi-colored, large-scale light installations
(abstracts, arches, and animals) scattered through an easy-tonavigate woodland trail about a mile long with accompanying music ranging from Swedish Europop band ABBA (Dancing Queen) to classical compositions by Edvard Grieg (Hall of the Mountain King) and Carl Orff (Carmina Burana).
Nordiska Museum is Sweden’s largest museum of cultural history with a collection of over one-anda-half million objects. It is a place to explore on-going traditions in Swedish life from celebratory table settings spanning the 6th- 20th centuries (state sumptuary laws dictated which desserts could be eaten according to social class), origins of the Lucia legend providing
light during winter darkness observed annually on December 13, to ritual objects from an Indigenous Sami bridal crown to science and mythology of a melting world with insights into the relationship of humans to ice. In this building with high, vaulted ceilings, interactive displays, films, and artifacts, vibrant exhibits are brought to life, often weaving together material in an immersive experience told through stories such as the clash between fire and ice and myths showing gratitude to nature.
The Indigenous Sami floor is currently under re-construction, but some Sami artifacts, tools, and textiles are on view in the impressive Arctic exhibit. This includes bear amulets, boat-like Ackja, sleds, and a Sami drum played by a shaman (noaidi) to communicate with other worlds. At one time, playing this instrument was punishable by death!
The major exhibition, The Arctic–While the Ice Is Melting, centers on cracks, which impact the Arctic in many ways: physically, emotionally, and metaphorically. The multidisciplinary show addresses more than climate change, since time stands still for plants, animals, and
organisms frozen in the ice according to glacial archeologists. The museum explains: “With the climate crisis, cracks arise between nature, traditions, and generations. A crack exists between those who protect the environment and those who want to exploit it for financial gain.”
Museum exhibition designer Sofia Hedman adds: “We want visitors to leave with a sense of urgency to tackle this crisis.” But the situation is not all negative. “They can make people listen and communicate, regardless of their origin or history. People can work together and heal cracks, and together, succeed in creating a new life with new solutions.”
LIDINGO
Millesgardern Sculpture Park is set on the affluent island of Lidingo, 20-minutes outside Stockholm in the inner Stockholm archipelago on the Baltic Sea. It encompasses a magical museum, garden, sculpture park, and former home of the revered 20th century, Swedish artist Carl Milles and wife, portrait painter Olga Milles. The site is now open to the public with both permanent and temporary exhibits offering an inviting day trip from the city by car or public transportation to view the rocky coastline, natural world, and cultural treasures of beloved sculptor, Carl Milles.
The outdoor sculpture park facing the water integrates Milles’ graceful figurative pieces in granite and bronze along with pine and birch trees, fanciful fountains, and large-scale architectural details including marble adornments from a demolished hotel and fragments from King Gustav III’s opera house. Many of the sculptures by Milles (1875-1955) were influenced by ice skaters he saw at Rockefeller Center in New York and from his stay in Paris, where he drew inspiration from the language of movement through dance, as fabric and veils billowed around the dancer with a freedom not seen in classical ballet. He incorporated
this sense of motion into his art, also referencing Greek and Roman mythology, an appreciation of Italian culture, particularly Mediterranean mosaics, and an interest in animals and astronomy.
Museum Director, Onita Wass speaks of the setting of the multi-layered, terraced property with many stone steps: “At Millesgarden there always seems to be more air and space than in other places. It is a good place to think new thoughts.”
Thinking new thoughts is on my mind as I contemplate works in the temporary exhibition. Color, pattern, and texture are in full bloom, providing a feast for the eyes in the textile show, Kaffe Fassett: The Power of Pattern, produced in conjunction with the Fashion and Textile
Museum in London. Meticulously crafted, vibrant quilts by a variety of global artists (Taiwan, Brazil, New Zealand) selected by Kaffe Fassett, a self-described “missionary for color,” who dubs his house a “color laboratory,” highlight new alluring designs and compositions. They remind museum viewers, quilts are more than regional folk art or storytelling devices (both personal and political), often sharing the process of creative community making, an artistic endeavor for a patchwork vision. Fassett explains: “Color is a life-enhancing force in the world and I think it is as important as music or words.”
Skeppsholmen or ”The Islet of Ships”
Museum Of Modern Art (Moderna Museet) is a place where you may encounter a wall of work by Henri Matisse or Hilma af Klint, a Swedish artist known to visualize the invisible in abstract, spiritual paintings, sometimes taking the form of spheres. But beyond important 20th century artists are works by lesserknown ones from the 21st century.
There are pieces by Indigenous Sami artists, such as Carola Gahn. One such work is a stacked pile of wood (with specific instructions on how the birch logs should be laid out), representing a silent testament to physical effort in a society where nature is animate. Another Sami artist, Lars Pirak created a pyramidshaped painting to adorn a Sami
cot based on a story told by his daughter. A ceremony was required before the artwork could be moved to the museum.
The possibility of a spiritual journey through paint is key in the work of American artist Rashid Johnson, who is also interested in expressing alienation and isolation. He is
particularly enamored with blue, both a color of bruising and healing and his series of Bruise Paintings showcase half-abstract, halffigurative forms as both witnessing and being witnessed.
Rashid Johnson works with shared cultural identities and personal narratives. He speaks of the impact of art in his book, Thinking-In-Action. “I’ve seen art changing people’s lives. I know it does because it changed mine. It gave me the opportunity to love. The first thing I knew to love outside my family was art. It taught me how to be empathetic. It taught me how to see with different eyes.”
Stockholm Toy Museum (Bergrummet - Tido Collection of Toys & Comics) offers a vast collection of toys and their historical development since the 15th century. Thematically curated displays are on view at this unexpected museum located in an underground cavern with tunnels once used by the Swedish Navy. Transportation enthusiasts will not be disappointed with a large collection of trains, planes, and automobiles.
BEARS DRINKING COCA-COLA AND POPEYE BLOWING SOAP BUBBLES
Appropriate for both kids and adults, a visit here leaves viewers with a sense of wonder often coupled with nostalgia. It is a place to view everything from vintage comics (the classic Yellow Kid and Weird Science alongside a news clipping about comic book burnings in 1949 claiming comic books were leading American youth to juvenile delinquency) to battery-operated toys, as well as futuristic automatons and robots. Toys may be little, but inspire big dreams.
COSTA RICA
Nestled on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, Manuel Antonio is a destination that’s synonymous with paradise. With its lush rainforest, pristine beaches, and abundant wildlife, it’s no wonder why it’s often considered one of the country’s most alluring destinations. The anticipation had been building for months, and as I stepped off the shuttle onto thick jungle soil, I knew my first visit to Manuel Antonio would be nothing short of an adventure. With the scent of tropical flora in the air and the warmth of the sun on my skin, I couldn’t help but wonder about all that I’ve heard of the coastal rainforest of Costa Rica. It’s certainly a popular destination that many strive to explore, but will it really match up to its reputation? After all, on the route in, I couldn’t help but notice the miles and miles of palmoil plantations. Fields of identical palm trees stood where some of the world’s most biodiverse jungles used to preside.
I realized that I simply cannot visit Manuel Antonio without also recognizing the environmental predicament we find ourselves in today. Through over a hundred years of corrupt businesses taking advantage of the land, much of the jungle has disappeared. Manuel Antonio stands as an untouched gem amongst a pile of rubble. It’s a reminder of what the Pacific Coast used to be, and acts as inspiration
for conservation efforts. Scarlet macaws were once prevalent throughout 85% of the country. Now, they have almost completely vanished, and would be extinct from Costa Rica if not for the conservationists providing sanctuary and rebuilding their habitat. When visiting Manuel Antonio, you might just see a scarlet macaw fly overhead, and it may certainly act as a reminder of Costa Verde truly returning back to its green roots.

BY: MATTHEW SCHUELLERWe arrived at Eco Friendly Gaia Hotel, a luxury adults-only and LGBTQ+ friendly resort located just minutes away from the Manuel Antonio park entrance. Known for its scarlet macaw conservation program, Hotel Gaia has reintroduced the species back to the country’s central Pacific Coast. The macaws in rehabilitation can be visited within the park behind the resort through Hotel Gaia’s daily nature tours.
The region offers a plethora of adventure activities, from zip-lining through the rainforest canopy to thrilling ATV tours. As much as I love a fun zipline, I was most interested in exploring the mangroves of Damas Island. By kayak, I cruised down the web of rivers and canals where curious capuchins greeted us from the treetops and exotic birds took flight. The mangroves are teeming with diverse wildlife, and is an incredibly different experience from what you may see in the National
Park. I recommend the tour as an absolute “can’t miss” for any looking to widen their Costa Rican sense of adventure.
While Damas Island was certainly a treat, it stood no match to setting foot into Manuel Antonio National Park. The ecological wonder encompasses a rainforest, pristine beaches, and a diverse range of wildlife. Armed with binoculars and a sense of adventure, I embarked on a guided hike through the park’s meandering trails. The park did not disappoint. Within moments, I was face to face with the captivating Costa Rican wildlife: capuchin monkeys swinging through the trees, howler monkeys providing a melodic soundtrack, and elusive sloths camouflaged in the canopy. The hike culminated in a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking the Pacific Ocean, a sight that was nothing short of awe-inspiring. After the tour, we were left to enjoy the last hours of

sunlight taking in the peace of Playa Manuel Antonio. Nestled within the national park, palm trees laden with coconuts and a backdrop of lush rainforest bordered the crystalline waters. The scene resembled something that must have been plucked straight from a postcard. We waded into the tepid saltwater to allow our feet to rest, glancing back at our bags on the sand from time to time to ensure no mischievous monkeys were trying their luck to find anything they could quickly steal.
Although Playa Manuel Antonio is the most famous and sought after beach in the region, there are many others that offer their own peace. I explored Playa Espadilla, the main public beach, with its gentle waves and soft sand, perfect for lounging or taking a refreshing dip. Just West from Playa Espadilla is Playitas Beach, a cozy LGBTQ+ friendly stretch of sand nestled up against the rocks and trees of a small peninsula. Just opposite, on the Northern end of the peninsula is Biesanz Beach. Popular amongst locals, Biesanz is set within a cove, providing extra calm waters that reminded me more of swimming in a lake than the ocean. At Biesanz you’ll find families barbequing, couples enjoying a drink or three, friends swimming, and perhaps a vendor or two selling freshly cut coconuts. I particularly loved spending time on Biesanz beach because it made me feel like I was finally seeing the Manuel Antonio that the locals see, geographically very close to the heavily populated Espadilla Beach, but it couldn’t be more different.
NESTLED WITHIN THE NATIONAL PARK, PALM TREES LADEN WITH COCONUTS AND A BACKDROP OF LUSH RAINFOREST BORDERED THE CRYSTALLINE WATERS. THE SCENE RESEMBLED SOMETHING THAT MUST HAVE BEEN PLUCKED STRAIGHT FROM A POSTCARD
Through plenty of adventurous activities and a heavy dose of beach time, it was necessary to indulge in as much freshly caught seafood that I could possibly find. Manuel Antonio caters to a variety of flavors and cuisines, from charming ocean-view restaurants like Emilio’s Café and Agua Azul, to wild and unexpected eateries like El Avión, which features a converted cargo plane transformed into a cocktail bar. Though the seafood was delightful at Restaurante Ronny’s Place and La Luna, our favorite meal was from the Manuel Antonio Falafel Bar. Unexpectedly, the falafel was some of the best I’ve had the opportunity to try. The restaurant is so unassuming, yet it serves great food, fantastic cocktails, and is much more affordable than the majority of the surrounding eateries.
Manuel Antonio is a paradise where nature thrives, and where the pace of life slows to a leisurely rhythm. Whether I was hiking through the rainforest, lounging on the beach, or savoring a delicious meal, the beauty and tranquility of this place left an indelible mark on my heart. As I reluctantly left Manuel Antonio, I promised myself I would return one day to bask in its beauty again. Until then, the memories of my first visit to this remarkable destination will continue to inspire my appreciation for the natural wonders of Costa Rica.
AUGSBURG
GERMANY
Only 45 minutes from Munich, the enchanting medieval city of Augsburg provides a treasure trove of culture and history. One of Germany’s oldest, the city celebrated their two-thousand-year anniversary in 1985 and dates back to the Roman era.
Germany is home to 52 UNESCO designations and Augsburg is recognized by the lauded organization for its 800-year-old water management system. Strolling along the historic streets and cobblestone lanes reveals its celebrated aqueduct and over 100 bridges to cross, pretty canals, decorative fountains, water wheels, and water towers to discover at every turn. Signs of time-honored traditions can be spotted along the way – tanned hides waiting to be sewn into lederhosen, a woodcarver bringing a puppet’s face to life, and chocolatiers decorating glistening bon-bons.
Founded by the Celts and then in 15 BC by the Romans, the town was named as homage to the Roman emperor Augustus. It was declared a Free Imperial City in the Roman Empire in 1276 and played a leading role in the 16th century Reformation that gave Lutherans equal rights with Catholics.
With its extensive waterways, the area flourished and Augsburg became a thriving center for commerce and the arts. It was one of Europe’s major trading and textile centers and remained a major manufacturing center up until 50 years ago.
A RIVER (OR FOUR) RUNS THROUGH IT
Wealthy merchants, fearful of flooding, built their residences on the high banks of the River Lech, but the Wertach, Brunnenbach and Singold rivers all played a part in shaping the success story of Augsburg. This is commemorated in one of the many fountains - the magnificent Augustus Fountain with its impressive bronze figures that features the city’s founder surrounded by the four river gods representing the important role the rivers held.

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE
Augsburg’s astounding water management system has existed since the Middle Ages and was first mentioned in 1276. Designed to separate drinking water from water used for suppling energy, hygienic purposes and waste disposal, the waterway is approximately 200 kilometers long and runs from the south to the north. Even centuries later, most of the canals still follow the original course. The day can be spent meandering down stone lane ways, criss-crossing bridges and following the water as it plays through the city as it has for centuries.
RECYCLING A CANAL
What do you do with an old canal? Repurpose it to create the world’s first artificial whitewater canoe course! Not for the fainthearted, it was used for the 1972 Olympic Summer Games in Munich and more recently, was home to the World Canoe World Championships in 2022.
THE FUGGER FAMILY
It is difficult to visit Augsburg and not hear of the Fugger family. They first moved to the city in 1367, and attained unimaginable wealth through mining and trade. “Think Elon Musk and Bill Gates combined and then beyond,” our tour guide explains. It is estimated that today their fortune would be worth approximately four hundred billion dollars. In the1500’s, Jacob Fugger became a wealthy patron of the arts and his legacy continues through the stunning Italian Renaissance design he introduced to the city with buildings like the Fugger chapel in St. Anne’s church and the one-of-a-kind Fuggerei social housing complex.
Not your usual tourist site, the Fuggerei is the oldest social housing project in the world and has had people living there continuously for half a millennium. Jacob Fugger created the charter in 1521 which stipulated the Fuggerei was designed for needy Catholic residents who
could live there in exchange for 88 cents (Euro) annual rent and three prayers a day.
The walled neighborhood had seven gates with wide streets designed to maximize sunlight and fresh air. The community was self contained with a chapel, fountain, pumping well, and even a hospital.
Now the tidy ivy-covered ochrecolored row houses look quite chic with distinct roof ridges that were once typical of Augsburg architecture, stepped gables, dormers and colorful gardens. Each home has a distinctive bell pull that was used by residents to identify their home in the dark before streets were illuminated.
Another holdover is the 10 pm curfew that was originally in place to protect residents from the rowdy streets outside the complex. To this day latecomers are faced with a €1 fine, more than their annual cost of rent, if they are tardy.
One of the former residents included Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s greatgrandfather, Franz, who was a bricklayer and lived with his family at the Fuggerei for 13 years until he passed away. An on site museum in one of the homes offers a fascinating glimpse on how the residents lived 500 years ago.
ALL THAT GLITTERS
The Augsburger Rathaus or Town Hall is a crown jewel designed by Elias Holl for his hometown and among the most stunning examples of Renaissance architecture north of the Alps. A renowned architect, Holl introduced the Renaissance design to Augsburg after a visit to Italy in the early 1600’s and while he designed several of the city’s spectacular buildings, the Rathaus is considered to be his most significant. Built in 1615 – 1620, it was Germany’s tallest building until 1917 and was the first building in the world higher than six stories. The most magnificent room is the Goldener Saal or the Golden Hall that shimmers in its splendor. Massive carved wooden doors open to reveal a double height room decorated with expansive murals and a coffered ceiling. After the building was bombed in 1944, only the foundation remained and the building was painstakingly rebuilt by craftspeople who carved the wood and then laid it with golf leaf, restoring it original glory for the city’s 2000 anniversary in 1985.
FUGGEREI WAS DESIGNED FOR CATHOLIC RESIDENTS WHO COULD LIVE THERE IN EXCHANGE FOR 88 CENTS (EURO) ANNUAL RENT
MAXIMILIANSTRASSE THE IMPERIAL MILE
This mile-long cobblestone street offers eye candy and culture galore with boutiques and bakeries, cafes and cocktail bars, cathedrals and museums. Running from City Hall to Rathausplatz, the popular street is divided by two ornate Renaissance fountains and bronze sculptures, and anchored by churches at each end. Along the way, visitors can explore a variety of sights that include the Museum of Jewish Culture housed in the synagogue, a marionette theatre, the former Benedictine monastery of St. Ulrich’s and St Afra’s Abbey and the Schaezlerpalais or Baroque Palace which is considered one of the best examples of Rococo architecture in the country.
Other highlights include the colorful Weberhaus or Weavers House, the Augsburg Cathedral which is believed to be home to the oldest stained-glass windows in the world, and Mozart House where Leopold Mozart, father of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was born.
“If you are in Munich and want a good beer, hop on a train and our beer garden is at the end of the track,” Felix, the guide at Brahaus Riegele says laughingly. One of the oldest breweries in Germany, it was established in 1386 and everything they make is produced on site. Family owned and operated, they offer tours of the brewhouse to learn the A to Z about beer, with a peek into the storage and through the facility. Special beers are available throughout the year with a spacious beer garden that operates in the summer, and a welcoming restaurant that features contemporary Bavarian specialties.
Augsburg brings history alive and offers an easy and interesting night or two getaway from Munich. Architecture afficionados and culture buffs will delight in all there is to see and learn, the beer gardens and cafes provide a relaxing respite, and in the background melodious chimes ring out from the imposing clock tower as they have for hundreds of years.
THE SPECTACULAR RED CRAB MIGRATION
BY RUSS WALSHEach year, a small Australian territory in the Indian Ocean becomes the stage for one of the world’s most breathtaking natural events: the Red Crab Migration on Christmas Island. This extraordinary phenomenon transforms the island as millions of bright red crabs embark on an epic journey from the dense forest to the coast. It’s a unique ecological event that captures the imagination of scientists and nature lovers alike.
CHRISTMAS ISLAND /62
THE MIGRATION: A JOURNEY AGAINST ALL ODDS
The migration begins as the wet season sets in, typically around October or November, and is closely tied to the lunar calendar. The crabs’ journey is prompted by the last quarter of the moon, a time when the tides are at their lowest. This period offers the safest conditions for the crabs to release their eggs into the sea.
“The Red Crab Migration is a stunning display of nature’s timing and precision,” says Dr. Emily Saunders, a marine biologist
specializing in crustacean behavior. “It’s fascinating how these creatures are so in tune with the lunar cycle and the tides.”
The journey of the crabs to the coast is fraught with challenges. They must navigate treacherous terrain, from steep cliffs to busy roads. Christmas Island residents show great respect for this natural marvel, often assisting by closing roads or creating pathways to ensure the safe passage of the crabs.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RED CRAB IN THE ECOSYSTEM
The red crab is a keystone species on Christmas Island. Their annual migration plays a crucial role in the island’s ecosystem. The crabs contribute significantly to the health of the forest by recycling nutrients and shaping the landscape through their burrowing and feeding habits.
During the migration, the forest floor comes alive with the movement of millions of crabs, creating a spectacular red carpet that stretches as far as the eye can see. This is not just a visual spectacle but also a critical ecological event. As Dr. Saunders explains, “The migration is essential for the dispersal of seeds and the aeration of the soil, which supports the island’s unique flora.”
THE RED CRAB MIGRATION IS NOT JUST A NATURAL WONDER BUT ALSO A SYMBOL OF ECOLOGICAL BALANCE AND RESILIENCE
THE LIFECYCLE OF THE RED CRAB
After reaching the coast and mating, female crabs release their eggs into the ocean, timed precisely with the turning tide. The eggs hatch almost immediately upon contact with the seawater, beginning a new life cycle. The larvae spend about a month in the sea, developing through several stages before they are ready to return to the land, a journey that can take years.
The young crabs face numerous predators in the ocean, and only a fraction survive to return to the island. Those that do make it back start a new life in the forest, contributing to the continuity of their species and the health of the island’s ecosystem.
CHALLENGES AND CONSERVATION EFFORTS
The Red Crab Migration is not without its challenges. In recent years, the crabs have faced threats from introduced species such as the yellow crazy ant, which has significantly impacted their population. Conservation efforts have been focused on controlling these invasive species and protecting the crabs’ habitat.
Road closures and the construction of crab bridges and tunnels are part of the island’s commitment to preserving this unique natural event. These efforts highlight the importance of human intervention in safeguarding delicate ecological processes.
EVERY
STAGE OF THE RED CRAB’S LIFE CYCLE IS A TESTAMENT TO THE INTRICATE BALANCE OF NATURE
The Red Crab Migration on Christmas Island is more than just an annual event; it is a symbol of the intricate balance of our ecosystem. It reminds us of the remarkable adaptability of nature and the importance of conservation efforts in protecting such extraordinary phenomena.
Dr. Saunders summarizes the sentiment perfectly: “Watching the Red Crab Migration gives you a profound appreciation for nature’s complexities and the critical need to protect these unique ecosystems for future generations.”
This awe-inspiring event continues to attract scientists and tourists from around the world, all eager to witness the spectacular journey of the red crabs – a journey that is as perilous as it is beautiful, and as essential as it is extraordinary.
