NEW YEAR, NEW CITY?

T

his should come as no surprise: I’m not a fan of Facebook.

In fact, I recently deleted my personal account – well, “deactivated” it into socialmedia limbo, at least, since the lords of Facebook won’t actually let you delete your shit. Why did I deactivate it? Because I couldn’t stand reading your mundane thoughts anymore. You all seemed so much more interesting to me before I started reading your posts. Now you’re ruined. Nice job. Anyway, there was one post that caught my attention on my final day on Facebook – one that wasn’t asking for virtual ego masturbation in the form of “likes.” Instead, it simply stated the following: “The 408 / I4 junction eastbound takes you right between the new Amway Center and the Orlando skyline. You realize Orlando really is a beautiful city.”

6

December 2010

Flashback time. When I was still in my teens, Church Street Station was an all-ages hot spot. Although it was in the midst of decline, having already seen its bar-hopping heyday in the ‘70s and ‘80s, this downtown street was still pretty packed every weekend. Though I wasn’t of age to get into the bars, on Friday nights I’d skateboard with my sister to Church Street Market. We would fiddle with gadgets in Sharper Image, stuff clothing from Express into my backpack, play video games in Church Street Station Exchange and scope out teenage boys near Terror On Church Street until my midnight curfew. Sadly, by the time I turned 21, Church Street Station looked kind of like a scene from The Walking Dead. A few people still hobbled around, making their way between Chillers, Big Belly and Latitudes, but most of the block was pretty fucking dead. The Exchange, Phineas Phogg’s and Rosie O’Grady’s closed down, and Church Street Market – which used to house Olive Garden, Express, Pizzeria Uno, Jungle Jim’s and the virtual spaceship ride – went poof. Bet you newbies to the nightlife had no idea any of that shit was ever downtown.

continued on page 8

I may hate a lot of things, but I couldn’t hate this post. In fact, I found myself agreeing with it. There’s a certain part of I-4 where, if you can remove your eyes from the road for a split second (I know, those electronic signs reminding you to keep moving at a whopping speed of 45 mph make it hard to do this), the city actually excites me a bit. Traveling eastbound and seeing the built-up skyline of overpriced

condos on the right, and the giant powergobbling flat-screen on the left, makes Orlando look kind of like a real city.

Recently, though, some life has been breathed back into the area, and the invisible wall that used to keep people from going anywhere

8

December 2010

You have to admit, it’s a little exciting. With all the new bars and clubs popping up lately it’s like we actually have something of a city now. I say we should all make a New Year’s resolution to go out there, get drunk, spend money and keep it alive. May I also add that this has been the least negative column I’ve ever written? Blame it on the holidays. And go fuck yourselves. Ahh, that’s much better.

continued from page 6

I’m not going to lie. I shrugged it off at the time, since I liked the seedier and more artsy side of Orange Avenue better anyway. I frequented Kit Kat (I miss you), Knock Knock (I miss you, too), Sapphire Supper Club (eh, kinda the same as The Social) and the then 1-year-old Bar BQ Bar. I can still clearly remember the night my friend Stephanie was knocked on her ass after ramming her forehead into one of those big ugly decorative lizards on Wall Street (old Wall Street, the one with the homeless kids on it) as we left Harold and Maude’s coffee shop. Regardless, it made me a little sad that there was nothing left on Church Street to trigger nostalgia for my teenage years.

past Antigua is finally coming down. Hopefully the opening of some new venues on Church – including Mojos Cajun Grill, Baby Grands Piano Bar and Touch – as well as the influx of new bars located in the nearby Amway Center will put this area back on the Orlando nightlife map and offer going-out crowds an escape from their usual digs.

ere at Drink we’re dedicated to telling you what’s cool around this town and what’s not. GLOWSTICKS Glowsticks are experiencing an unfortunate resurgence in the club scene, popping up at dance parties all over Orlando. But why? Why would kids start dancing with glowsticks again? The last thing this town needs is a flood of candy ravers with pacifiers in their mouths dancing like fools while flaunting their glowstick-dancing prowess: “Look at me! I make lights spin! It’s so trippy! I’m so fucked up!” C’mon guys, this is one trend that definitely does not need to be resurrected. If you start wearing Jncos again we’re gonna get really pissed. Now ... please pass the Vicks inhaler, man. 22

ORANGE YOU GLAD PRESENTS SLEIGH RIDE We’d be surprised if promoter Tierney Tough isn’t asked on a regular basis when the next Orange You Glad Festival is going to happen. The uber-successful indie rock festival started by Tough more than a year ago was a big hit, and it looks like this Sleigh Ride is her attempt to sate our appetites until she stages the next one. The Sleigh Ride is actually a pub crawl to various venues, including Will’s Pub, Peacock Room, Redlight Redlight, Stardust and Park Ave CDs, hosting shows as part of the event. For $10, participants will get wristbands that’ll get them into all the venues; proceeds will benefit Toys for Tots, and a portion will also be used to adopt a median in Audubon Park for beautification. Improving our neighborhoods while helping kids enjoy Christmas? Very cool. Dec. 18, wristbands are $10 and can be purchased at Park Ave CDs, or at the door on the day of the event. For more information plug “Orange You Glad presents Sleigh Ride” into your Facebook search box.

COPPER ROCKET PUB SOUTHERN FRIED SUNDAY FOR THE HOLIDAYS Located in Maitland, right around the corner from Enzian, Copper Rocket Pub has the beer you like, some of the best burgers in town and the entertainment you crave. Into trivia? Copper Rocket hosts trivia nights Monday through Friday, so you can test your brain power while dulling your senses. Like cheap drinking? They have daily happy hours from 5 to 6 pm, 8 to 9 pm, and midnight to 1 am, during which domestic drafts are only $1.75 and imports are $3.50. Like to pretend you’re a good ole boy? Head to Copper Rocket for a monthly Southern Fried Sunday showcase and catch live bluegrass, alt-country or modern folk bands for cheap. AROMA ITALIAN CAFÉ & WINE BAR When you get tired of yelling to your date over the table at Dexter’s, and you’re looking for a quieter place to spend the rest of your evening, walk about half a block over and check out that tiny place called Aroma, located next to Wildside BBQ. There’s usually live offee and wine bar, but music playing on the patio of this intimate little coffee n the volume is kept at a reasonable level, so you can u actually hear your companion’s conversation–you n know, the main reason you’re out with this person in the first place. The subdued atmosphere, plus a ti simple but fresh Italian menu of paninis, antipasti and cheeses to accompany your wine, make this a near-perfect date spot. You’re welcome. m 712 E Washington St., Orlando, aromaitaliancafe.com

Instead, you mock the robot by doing the dance for all your friends on the dance floor. Clever. Well, gu guess what? You’re doing the fucking robot. This also applies to the guys who think it’s funny to jokingly yell “fist pump!” an and proceed to “fake” fist pump into the air with all their bros at the club. NEW TO TOWN

N

ot your old neighborhood haunt, not your Momma’s discotheque and not your Grandpa’s game of golf: Here are some of the more innovative new bars that grace the City Beautiful. By Heather Lyles

VAIN

22 S. Magnolia Avenue If you’ve stumbled into Vain without knowing what you’re walking into, chances are you’ll end up second-guessing your surroundings, even if you’re sober. Especially when you’re handed a pair of 3-D glasses (go ahead, put them on – geek is totally chic these days) and a bottle of booze suddenly appears next to you. Yep, 3-D is not just for theme parks anymore (by the way, welcome back Captain EO!). Vain (formerly Lyrica, formerly Cairo) brings the 3-D club experience to downtown Orlando.

CaddyShanks

Coming Soon!

4882 New Broad Street Farewell fresh air and birdies, hello virtual nature. Caddyshanks in lovely downtown Baldwin Park, the newest sports pub on the block, brings indoor virtual golf to Orlando. Grab your clubs because this place is equipped with more than 60 championshiplevel courses packed into three state-of-the-art simulators (and the only ones endorsed by the PGA). It’s reasonably priced ($5 for 30 minutes on the driving range, $30 for an hour on a surround simulator), and it also has a wi-fi lounge, a gaming room and great beer – you just may want to reconsider your fancy-pants country club membership.

THE E ATTIC ATTIC

68 East Pine Street It’s hard to say which city – New York or Miami – had more of an influence on the design of the Attic. The exposed-brick walls in one room give the place a big-city,, gritty feel, but turn the corner into the next and you’re greeted by fluorescent lights and a row of South Beach-style cabanas. It’s an odd combination, but somehow it works. Decor aside, the Attic is a a good spot for a few rounds of pool and fantastic drink specials. During Thursday’s unlimited beer n ni ght, for example, a $5 cover for the ladies ($7 for the night, ge g ents) will buy you enough bottled beer to pickle your gents) liliver live iver ve byy midnight. ve

I drink to deal with my Aunt Jaquita telling me how handsome I am while she borderline makes out with me. If that doesn’t work, I go hide under the Christmas tree and blaze a fat one.

Because my grandmother is batshit crazy. She’s loud, obnoxious, rude, and doesn’t care about being PC at all. But we’ve all just learned to accept it and let her ramble on about nonsense. –Michael Khan, photographer, Smile For Camera

BAND REVIEWS

MUSIC

LEFT OF CENTER By Kyle Raker

O

rlando is blessed with a diverse local music scene. While most of the big crowds go out to see better-known touring acts, some of our talented local bands are overlooked. Featured below are some local acts worth checking out. S.K.I.P. (Hip-Hop, Rock, Soul) Listen if you like: Sage Francis, Mars Volta, Gnarls Barkley S.K.I.P.’S music is one part hip-hop, one part rock and one part soul. He blends elements from all of these influences to create a unique sound that’s truly his own. At the recent release show for his new album, Until The End, S.K.I.P. really showed how personal his work is to him. He took the time to stop and explain the songs to the audience, and his performance was so passionate that he was gasping for breath at one point. He laughed it off, saying, “I don’t think I have performed this many songs at once before.” The songs tell the story of three people, all characters in a comic book series he created while working on his album “Until The Very End.” Purchase of the recent release on skip.bandcamp.com includes “A Clean Slate,” issue #1 of the series.

TEENAGE SOFTIES (Punk Rock) Listen if you like: Crass, John Joseph’s Audio Book, The Muffs Orlando punk rock band Teenage Softies (not to be confused with THE Teenage Softies from New York) is fronted by Mark Boner of Monikers. If you haven’t heard of Monikers, I wouldn’t be surprised, but it doesn’t really matter anyway, because Teenage Softies sound nothing like Monikers. What they do sound like is good, old-fashioned punk rock. Their shows are rife with energy. When I asked Mark to tell me a little bit about his band, he responded: “We are punks and we are from Orlando, Fla. We do not plan on leaving. We tour and put out records. Come to one of our shows and you can expect to have beer thrown all over you by your fellow half-wit cohorts.” I guess that pretty much sums it up.

December 2010

HOT MOUTH (Rock/Powerpop) Listen if you like: Sex Pistols, Cheap Trick, Big Star Hot Mouth describe themselves as “stadium-sized power pop for now people.” It’s a description fitting for a band that recalls the stadium-sized sounds of influences like Cheap Trick and Big Star. Their shows are authentic and without the gimmicks you sometimes find in bands that go for that throwback feel. If you like a band that seems contrived and tries too hard, look elsewhere: This isn’t the band for you.

REVERBNATION.COM/HOTMOUTH

LEGENDARY JC’S The JC’s (or, Joint Chiefs ... hmm) have an old-school sensibility that’s more Motown than O-town. The seven-piece band, fronted by Eugene Snowden, offer up traditional R&B, delivered with fervor. Snowden is a true showman, and has the charisma to pull it off. Going to a JC’s show is usually more like going to a party than it is a traditional concert experience, and I mean this in the best way possible. They are definitely one of the best live acts in town and not to be missed.
