JUNE 2011

The Senseless and Avoidable. I’ve been out more times than I wish to remember (or can remember) over the past couple of weeks, and while I’ve had some interesting moments at several of our local bars lately, the thought of writing about how drunk I was, or which idiot douchebag made such and such moronic comment to me one of those nights, just seems so unimportant when I think about the tragedy that happened downtown last month. As someone heavily involved in our nightlife scene, it would be inappropriate and absolutely inconsiderate of me to write this month about my random bouts of intoxication and say nothing on the subject of Milton Torres.

DRINK DRANK

DRUNK

by Meghan Schalk

In the early morning on May 7, Milton Torres, a downtown Orlando security worker for The Lodge, was stabbed to death during a fight that erupted when other bouncers tried to escort two brothers out of the venue for reportedly pouring beer onto patrons from the second-floor balcony. The two brothers were arrested – Eric Sandhaus for second degree murder and Craig Sandhaus for trespassing and disorderly conduct. At 4 that morning, I received a phone call from my boyfriend Bryan, who’s in the same line of work as Milton at a venue directly across the street from The Lodge. He sounded distant and confused as he told me what had transpired. The episode hit too close to home for the both of us. On the Wednesday following the incident, Bryan and I accompanied my co-worker Liz at a benefi t for Milton and his family. The compassion felt by the community was shown in the number of people that showed up, the plethora of money and gifts donated from a neverending list of local bars and businesses, and the generous bids placed on items up for auction. It was absolutely remarkable. It was a moving event, and I was incredibly proud of everyone in Orlando that was a part of it. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that the Torres family felt the enormous amount of love and respect the community had for Milton. As I type this column a week later, there are still questions to be answered and other sides of the story waiting to be heard. Craig Sandhaus, the brother who was initially arrested for trespassing has since confessed to the murder of Milton Torres and claims he reacted in “self defense” when his brother Eric was getting beat up by bouncers. He said he stabbed Torres because he was “scared.”

n

The wonderful thing about having a column is that I am under no obligation to write in an unbiased fashion. I am not reporting the news, nor am I writing this for an encyclopedia or textbook. I’m simply giving my opinion. According to the police report, Craig Sandhaus and his brother were asked to leave, escorted out the back door,

and when they refused to go, a fight broke out. Forgive me if I feel that, had Craig Sandhaus and his brother just left when they were asked to, or I don’t know, didn’t pour beer on people’s heads in the first place, nothing out of the ordinary would have happened at The Lodge that night. Regardless of how the events unfolded – a snap reaction to fear or whatnot – I have to side with the person who lost his life. As adults, we have one obligation to fulfi ll when we are out, and that’s simply to act like fucking adults. If you underage drink, fall over drunk, throw a drink at someone, start a fi ght, own up to whatever the hell you just did and understand that if you are being asked to leave, it’s because the bar doesn’t want to be liable for your stupid behavior anymore. The men who work security aren’t paid to listen to you argue, they are paid to keep the bar safe and get anyone who may be a threat to their patrons out of the venue. Don’t argue, don’t puff up or throw a punch. Suck it up and leave. The escalation of violence that occurs when people feel they have to defend their egos is insane.

“A little less drinking and a little more class and respect for each other could do a lot…” I’m going to be honest, downtown Orlando looks like a fucking zoo from 1:30-2:30 a.m., and the behavior I see on display nightly when I am out is embarrassing. While 90 percent of the people in this city make their way drunkenly to their cars in order to avoid being towed and ticketed, there is a constant crescendo of yelling through the streets, girls hobbling around in their filthy bare feet holding their heels and men desperately harassing any vagina that walks by in a final, desperate attempt to get laid. A little less drinking and a little more class and respect for one another could do a lot for the general look, as well as the safety, of our city and nightlife. How about we give it a shot?

HABITAT

DRINK OF CHOICE

KEY CHARACTERISTICS

Irish Pubs or anywhere that serves craft beer and wine within a onemile radius of campus. Think Fiddlers Green, Shipyard Brew Pub, The Wine Room.

The latest craft beer, 12-year old whiskey and diet (that’s adult and expensive, right?)

Can be overheard having painfully indepth discussions about books, movies and the like, often using big words learned in class a mere three hours ago.

Any strip mall bar located directly across the street from campus. Think Knight Library or Fubar.

Whatever wells are free. Whatever beers are free. Whatever shots are free.

They might as well be at the beach: baseball caps, sun dresses and flip-flops. Also, their youth makes you feel like a dried-up old husk in comparison.

Anywhere you only have to walk about five feet from one bar to the other. And five more feet to the next. And ten more feet to the one after that. Think Wall Street Plaza, Vintage, Vixen.

The usuals. Jack and Coke, vodka cran, Bud, Budlight, Yuengling and all the girly foo-foo drinks in between.

Look for the keychain trifecta: nice car key, no grocery-store discount cards and a Metro Muscle gym card.

Anywhere with a wine selection. Think Circa 1926 or Luma.

Whatever is served fastest, because time is money, people.

Nice dresses, nice shoes, high price “hair systems,” rock-hard silicone boob jobs.

Anywhere interior décor consists of Christmas lights or stolen traffic signs. Think Eye-Spy, Bar-BQ-Bar, I-Bar.

PBR, unless you’re being a fascist and charging more than $2.

Tattoos, vintage plaid, ironic mustaches and the most expensive messy haircuts you’ve ever seen.

Not many choices these days. The danceclub scene is slowly dying. Think The Roxy, The Beacham.

Whatever drink their over-21 dance partner is holding that they can quickly sip while no one is looking.

Jeans, T-shirts, short, tight dresses and heels that make you walk like a raptor.

Anywhere that supports the local music scene. Think Will’s Pub, BackBooth.

Just a beer. Doesn’t matter which one. They’re watching the show and it’s just something to sip on.

T-shirt, jeans, Taliban beard, several very harsh words about whatever band you like.

TIPPING HABITS

PREFERRED MUSIC

SIGNS OF DRUNKENNESS

THREAT LEVEL

Standard. Not worried about money, but definitely don’t think you deserve a whole lot of it just for taking the cap off a beer bottle.

Harvard

Hello. These kids have their OWN college radio station.

They didn’t flinch when you told them you were an Art History major at Valencia.

Medium. Beware of these young drinkers: Once you’re ensnared in a conversation about mutual funds, it can be difficult to escape.

“Tip? Isn’t that why I paid a cover?”

A Docta Dawe house party.

Doesn’t matter. After drinking 50-cent wells all night, music is just white noise.

Are you looking at one? They’re drunk.

Low. They’re known to pitch a drink or two at someone’s head, but if you’re pursued just retreat to the nearest spot with a $10+ cover.

Varies from the standard dollar per drink to the two leftover quarters from the last drink; possibly more, depending on whether the bartender has hooked them up in the past.

South Beach (though if you’re at Sky60 and squint your eyes just right…)

Top 40 is just fine. It’s fun to sing along to and show people how awesome it is that you know the words to every bad song ever created.

Twelve of them will be piled into the cart of one unfortunate pedicabber.

Low. They’re the antelope of the downtown savannah natural prey for beggers and panhandlers.

Depends on how young, hot and shameless the bartender is.

In a time machine.

Thinks that Lady Gaga person has some catchy tunes.

Signs mimic stroke: Slurred speech, incoherent rambling. Open flirtation with someone young enough to be their child.

High. Wealth and a squandered youth have collided to create a roaring predator that will be very mad if you poke fun.

Like a champ... mostly because their friends are bartending.

Austin or Portland.

Any band that has ever played at SXSW.

They start smoking (if already smokers, they smoke even more), and mention at least five times that they’re “just barely buzzed right now.”

Low. Though if you pick a fight with a weekday warrior while other weekday warriors are around, they’ll form into a huge “Critters”-like ball and devour you.

They won’t until they get caught not doing so, in which case they will open their wallets and hand over the only dollar bill inside of it.

Miami or NYC.

Anything by the DJ/ artist whose fl yer got the most “likes” on Facebook.

They’re being carried out by the person they were making out with on the dance floor all night.

High, considering they are only out to drink and fuck.

He’ll tip but still rip you a new asshole if your service was crappy.

India or Vietnam, whichever has the cuisine he’s into this week.

Do you like it? Then he doesn’t.

You can never really tell.

Low. You won’t even notice he’s there and he’s fine with that. He’s not really “into” people.

THE MANTEIS PROJECT

by Jeff Orlando

The Manteis Project is a local collective of musicians and audiophiles. They combine electronic music and digital media with world-music inuences to create a unique and compelling sound. DRINK asked founding member Rhett Johnson to talk to use about how his troupe is blazing its own eclectic path through the local music scene. Jeff Orlando: When did Manteis Project form?

JO: What is the concept behind your vision?

Rhett Johnson: Manteis Project, in its current state, formed in 2010. I wrote most of the songs that we perform live between 2002-2006 [while it was still a solo project].

RJ: To heal our world with sound and light by creating performance art that leaves people with a sense of profound connectedness and thoughtfulness regarding the world around them.

JO: How did the core of this band come into being? RJ: I had all these songs. I approached DJ Spank and Mark DeMaio (whom I worked with in band called Red Shift Mantra) to join me in playing the songs out. Then Tracy King approached me offering to play sitar and guitar. I then recruited Riad, also from Red Shift Mantra.

JO: Who and what are your inuences? RJ: Future Sound of London, Brian Eno and Dead Can Dance. JO: When it comes to world music, is there a certain culture that you identify with more than another? RJ: Indian/South Asian and African. Continued on page 22

JUNE 2011

THE MANTEIS N PPROJECT JO: Does Manteis Project write songs or something akin to “sonic landscapes” that are free to evolve? RJ: They are compositions that are pretty much the same each time. But there are elements of improvisation from the percussionists and DJ Spank. For the most part, I mix the show live from my rig. Running the main mix I can virtually “conduct” or pull instruments in and out as required. JO: How do you go about writing a new piece? RJ: The songs begin with my studio compositions and then are given to individual members to compose and weave their layers into the pieces. JO: It seems as though Manteis Project embraces both the latest technology and digital devices as well as worldly instruments equally. Talk about the process of maintaining the balance between the two. RJ: The compositions begin with electronic instruments. Sometimes the acoustic instruments are given “placeholders” from samples or midi instruments. Later, we either replace [those samples] or augment the acoustic instruments through effects so that they all blend together as one whole composition. JO: How do you feel The Manteis Project fits into the local Orlando scene?

RJ: Orlando has a rich past in the underground electronic scene, especially through the mid-1990s. I feel we tap into that vibe and those who lived and danced through those years at Firestone and The Edge have grown up a bit and are seeking out our sound. I’ve heard many references to Thievery Corporation and Tom Middleton over the years. JO: Does the band currently have a favorite venue to play? RJ: We love Blank Space Gallery, Taste and we’re big fans of the now defunct DaVinci in Deland. JO: What would your ideal show be like? RJ: Our ideal show would be in an immersive, listener-centric venue where the music is presented as art. We think of a performance as something like a gallery show where patrons come to appreciate the artistry, versus regarding it as background music for a night of drinking. JO: What would you like for people to come away with after attending a show of yours? RJ: I want to leave people inspired and feeling uplifted. The visuals we employ illustrate elements of social commentary, which can leave people thinking about what’s going on in the world in a different way. The Japan Benefit we played was one example of that. JO: And what is next for Manteis Project? RJ: Our first studio album to be released later this year.

NEW TO TOWN BY JON BERGQUIST

NEW TOWN If there’s anything Orlando has to offer to boost the pathetic economy, it’s the plethora of serviceindustry jobs that are always available around town. Thanks to the growing number of drinking establishments here, dropping out of UCF to pursue a career in bartending no longer seems like such a bad idea after all. Here’s a look at some of the newbies on our blocks.

ZEN EXOTIC LOUNGE

CHICO’S DIRTY TACO & TEQUILA BAR

17 W. PINE ST.

50 E. CENTRAL, SUITE D

Baz Luhrmann’s film, Australia, had so many conflicting themes that it seemed like it couldn’t make up its mind what sort of film it wanted to be when it grew up. It combined the Western, romance and war genres in such a jarring way that it almost seemed like it was three separate movies. Zen Exotic Lounge gives off a similar vibe. The logo for Zen has both the words “club” and “lounge” in it. The musical format combines top 40, R&B, Caribbean and techno music. The bar plans to host concerts, karaoke, comedy and fashion shows, so if variety is your thing, this place is for you. Zen Exotic Lounge has managed to make much better use of the space than its predecessors Blue Room, Voyâge and Déjà vu. It looks much nicer inside and the DJ booth is no longer awkwardly shoved into a back corner.

It seems like Smokehouse BBQ was here for little more than a fortnight, and now its replacement is already settled in. Chico’s Dirty Taco and Tequila Bar is the latest offering from Angel Cortes, owner of Vain, which is conveniently located in the same building. A place that sells tacos downtown that’s open until 2 am Tuesday through Wednesday, and as late as 4 am Thursday through Saturday – why did it take so long for something like this to come along? The owners could have taken the easy route and simply let the lure of latenight tacos alone bring in the customers, but instead they stepped it up and created a heavily themed establishment complete with a wacky fictitious figurehead and backstory involving the theft of a recipe and an international uproar.

FRANK AND STEIN’S

DRAFT GLOBAL BEER LOUNGE & GRILL

to

150 S. MAGNOLIA AVE.

301 / 333 WEST CHURCH ST.

There has been a dearth of German eateries in town ever since Old Germany shut its doors a few years back. Hopefully Frank and Stein’s will help fill the void – or at the very least provide an alternative to making the drive to Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Café in Sanford. Its website boasts that it will offer an impressive selection of 300 craft beers and 40 taps (in addition to a food menu). Frank and Stein’s also plans to hold an annual beer tour. This place has a lot of potential, and it definitely gets points for the pun. Frank and Stein’s is located in the Plaza on the corner of Church and Magnolia, where Forty VII Clothing used to be.

This is perhaps the most posh sports bar you’ll ever see. In fact, Dr. Frasier Crane would have felt more comfortable here than at Cheers. Draft Global Beer Lounge and Grill is located directly across the street from the new Amway Center. The lounge has two rooms: one is more of a dining room, the other more of a lounge. The décor and ambience is consistently stylish throughout. It’s open seven days a week as early as 11 am to accommodate the lunch crowd, and as late as 2 am Thursday through Saturday to cater to the pre- and post-event crowds from the Amway Center, as well as downtown regulars.

the local

cool Here at Drink we’re dedicated to telling you what’s cool and what’s not because you’re just not cool enough to know any of this yourself.

Jonny Rotton’s Bar Out Back C COOL Summer is the time to reflect on (and come to terms with) the fact that you live in Florida, and there are few bars that cram as many aspects of Florida living into one place as Jonny Rotton’s Bar Out Back in Sanford. Bikers, old Florida history, sweltering open-air seating and a very good chance you’ll spot a gator in Lake Monroe. And drunk rednecks, too. Orlando can be kind of faceless at times, so it’s good to go to Jonny’s to get an authentic Florida gut check every once in a while. Plus, their website has cartoon pigs humpin’.

I-Drive Monorail RFC REALLY FUCKING COOL Isn’t it weird how I-drive can sit out there with its gigantic waterpark, go-kart tracks and endless minigolf courses, yet 90 percent of Orlando rarely gets ets to reap the benefits of this perfect-for-a-first-date area? Fear not, late 2013 Orlando will receive the “Mini ini Rail” a series of small Magic Kingdom-like monorails norails that will follow a specially designed track alongg side dee I-4. The trains are expected to run from downtown, tow wn n,, through the Holy Land Experience parking lot and will nd dw illl end at the Convention Center, with touristy “rest stops” estt st top ops” ss”” in between. While riding, passengers will be able ble to enjoy gourmet “food truck” appetizers and a menu of select craft beers and wine. Sound too good to be true? Of course it is, dumbass. We just ran short on really fucking cools this month and figured it would be easier to make one up.

C COOL No, this is not a campaign to keep another awesome character on The Office from leaving the show (whew). We’re talking basketball, and we can’t help but tip our hats to the folks behind StayDwight.com, a site devoted to letting Dwight Howard know just how much Orlando loves him (and his massive, scary shoulders). The campaign is organizing local businesses to recruit people to shout “We love you!” (seriously?) from every rooftop, and paste his goofy face on any surface it’ll stick to. Sure, it’s a little strange to have to get to third base with the egos of athletes just so they don’t leave (especially when they lose), but we can be emotional sluts if it means he’ll give us a ring next year.
