The Company You Keep. My friend Justin is the perfect girl friend. He doesn’t need to borrow my clothes, but he manages to coordinate well with me when we go out. He’s funny, and unlike most women, he can hold his liquor.

Unfortunately, he moved out of the state last year and abandoned me. In the same time period, three more of my closest friends moved to other states, my very pregnant friend Stephanie was attempting her third child and dropped off the earth, Martine was busy with a new crowd and my best friend Kara took her life right before Christmas. I’m pretty independent and never really considered myself someone who NEEDED my friends, but once they were no longer there, especially Kara, I became a very solemn, bitter and hateful person. Slightly more than usual, anyway. While I do have a wonderful boyfriend by my side, there are still some nights that I feel a little sad and completely misplaced when I’m out, and I want nothing more than to have these friends back. So I was pretty excited when I got a text from Justin a few weeks ago. “I’m coming into town for two weeks,” it said. “Take me to your whores.” A few days later Justin was standing in the bathroom with me, adjusting his skinny tie as I straightened my already straight hair. I quickly ran through a two-item checklist of the things he was to accompany me to, whether he liked it or not. “We have to go to this weekly dance night called Battyfang at Pulse because unfortunately I made my last column a ‘to be continued’ and stated that I was heading there. Then next week is the Weekly ’s Best of Orlando party. I skipped last year’s, and my publisher noticed, so I have to go to this one.” “Did you win best writer?” he asked. “Not unless the Orlando Weekly readers have suddenly become 22 again.” I answered.

“Shut up, you still could win. Did you even try?” he continued. “Justin, my readers drink. I doubt they can even remember or coherently pronounce my last name, let alone spell it on a las bballot.” Fifteen minutes later we were entering Pulse. Pulse, as we all know it, is a gay club and a gorgeous revamped one at that. Is Battyfang a gay night? I’m going to go with
not really, as every male in the room was clearly salivating over the girls who were wearing masks and dressed in super heroin-esque costumes and school-girl skirts. Apparently the intent was to make this a masquerade party reminiscent of the one thrown in Stanley Kubrick’s movie Eyes Wide Shut . Classy, sexy, anonymous. But what they got instead were a lot of 21-year-old girls who seem to really really love Halloween and the costume section at Fairvilla. Clearly a failure in the Kubrick department, but I doubt anyone is complaining. Battyfang, check. Next up, the Orlando Weekly party. I grabbed the Best Of Orlando issue from Beefy King on a sunny Wednesday afternoon, quickly opened it up to the local color section and jumped for joy when I saw that I had shockingly won best writer in the city! Holy shit, I couldn’t believe my eyes!!!! Oh no, wait, I didn’t even place. Thanks, fuckers. I sent a text to Justin: “I didn’t win. But the drinks are free and only the cool people were invited and by cool I mean the owners of Taco Bell because our city voted them our best cheap eats restaurant. Let’s go!” An hour went by and still no response from Justin (I realized later this retarded app I installed on my Android had filtered all of his texts into an SMS spam folder) so I grabbed my roommate, Sarah, and my friend, Martine, who had actually texted me earlier that week, and headed to the party at the Beacham. Twenty minutes and one panic attack later, caused by a very dark and remarkably crowded Best Of party, my friends and I walked across the street for a beer at another bar. Justin eventually joined us and there we all sat, watching the crowd of smokers huddled together outside the Beacham, banned from taking their stinky, dirty habits into a club that smelled like cat pee in the eat-with-your-hands-buffet area. For a brief moment, as always, I did miss my friend Kara and wished she were there with us. But I didn’t get mad or become so upset that I had to hide my stupid wet, glassy eyes, and I wasn’t stricken with a sudden desire to get up and head home. And even though it was hot and sticky as shit outside, even though my beer tasted like crap and I was not the best writer in Orlando, for the first time in a long time I didn’t feel sad, misplaced or alone. I was in the presence of good company again, and I have to admit, I felt genuinely happy. TO BE CONTINUED…

1. Join A Folk Song Circle Summer evenings make us think of family and friends gathering on the porch to sip lemonade and sing songs against the peaceful patina of a golden setting sun, while buzzing cicadas and a well-timed breeze mark the hour. You should make the same memories! Just substitute “friends and family” for “perfect strangers,” “lemonade” for “beer” and “buzzing cicadas” for “rushing Colonial Drive traffic.” There, now you have the setting for the Central Florida Folk Song Circle, which meets every third Thursday of the month at Dandelion Communitea Café. Sometimes there’s a featured singer, but there’s always a freefor-all, for which you can liquid courage yourself up to some good old-fashioned caterwauling.
2. Attend A Summer Music Festival There ain’t nothing like a summer music festival. Everybody’s dressed in their skimpiest outfits, bands are blaring from multiple stages, schizophrenics somehow get in and frighten you, there’s all sorts of new people to try to sleep with and the drugs … ohhh, the drugs. Sadly, you live in Central Florida, so your choices are limited: You can go see 311 at the Pow Wow Festival on Aug. 4 on the Suwanee River, or Disturbed at the Rock Star Mayhem Fest at the 1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre (sigh) on Aug. 13. Or – OR! – you can be a grown up and drive your ass 18 hours north to a real music festival – namely, Lollapalooza in Chicago from Aug. 5-7.
3. Support The Orlando Arts Everyone says that Orlando has no culture and that we’re all a bunch of uneducated troglodytes (pssh, whatever that means), so let’s prove them wrong! Did you know we have an official art museum? Please say yes. The Orlando Museum of Art has its next First Thursday event on Aug. 4, and this month’s theme is graphic design and illustration, aka the art of brainwashing people with pretty, pretty pictures. It’s $10 (free for OMA members, and the membership card is handy for slapping across the faces of people who call you “uncultured”).
4. Learn The Secret Of The Library Lights Did you even know there was a secret to those things? You know the lights – the row of colored plastic banners along Magnolia Avenue that light up and make a bong noise when you hit the button. Well, there’s a pattern of button-pushing that causes them to do a little song and dance, but we aren’t saying what it is. Figure it out yourself, you mooch.

5. Do A Bike-ride Pub Crawl Summer is a time for laziness, so much so that none of the regular organizers of Orlando’s bicycle pub crawls have anything scheduled. Time to be proactive – set one up yourself. It’s easy enough: Step 1: steal a bike (make it an expensive one). Step 2: relentlessly Facebook-bomb your friends about it, like an asshole. Step 3: get drunk and ride. Oh, wait, shit... Step 4: plan out a course. We recommend neighborhoods like Mills 50, Thornton Park or even downtown (if you don’t mind losing a couple friends to traffic, that is).
6. Take A Public Dump Somewhere Fancy Don’t even deny it – you’ve always wanted to do this, even if you normally hate doing number 2 in public. There’s just something about the ambience, the luster, the flawless porcelain and – dare we say it? Yes, we dare – the romance. So go ahead, confidently march your way into the Grand Bohemian’s bar bathroom and stink it up. You could die tomorrow, and you wouldn’t want to go without knowing what their toilet paper feels like, would you?
7. Get Trashed At A Farmers Market For all the hippie-dippy talk about how it’s “good for the environment” and it “promotes a sense of community, man,” farmers markets can be freakin’ dull. They’re all knickknacks and handmade dresses this, and “let me show you how to grow tomatoes out of a kitty litter box” that. Meanwhile you’re all like “Where’s the goddamn bar in this joint?” So do it, go whole (organic) hog – just get wasted. A good place to start is the Blues and Jazz Outdoor Market Experience every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Veranda Park in Metrowest. If you’re swaying, people will think you’re just grooving to the music, not trying to remember which way is up.
8. Play BINGO With Your Elders Unlike you (hopefully), the old folks will be dead soon, so why don’t you be a good young’un and go spend some time with their wrinkly asses? Every Monday at 5:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. ( just before bedtime) the Orlando Elks Lodge 1079 hosts bingo in its old-style English Pub (12 N. Primrose Drive). Who knows, you might glean some wisdom, get a horrible glimpse into your future or score with some sweet, sweet sabertooth (like a cougar, but older).

9. Take a pedicab rollercoaster ride If you’re in a pedicab and you happen to be between Rosalind Avenue and Central Boulevard, offer up praise (and maybe offer a sacrifice, too) to the drinking gods for the great gift they have given you. Tip your driver an extra $5 and ask to be taken to the Rollercoaster. It’s an elevated ramp meant for delivery trucks to the Embassy Suites, but for you it’s a brief but exhilarating (and probably dangerous) makeshift concrete dive-coaster. Keep your hands up!
10. Visit A Seedy Bar We at Drink treat our seedy bars just like we treat our high school marching-band experience – they made us who we are, but we’d just as soon kill you as admit we were ever there. If you don’t have a regular seedy bar, you should get one. Best bet: Uncle Lou’s Entertainment Hall. The bar is made from ramshackle plywood and stolen hornet’s nests, beer is served from rows of hand-me-down plastic coolers, and a lone, ancient light bulb is all that stands between you and the man-eating monsters that crouch in the shadows. But the prices are good, and it’s the best place to wander in and accidentally catch an exciting new band hurling music like fastballs on the corner stage.
11. Stuff Your Facehole At A Food Truck Bazaar For those of you who are not yet truckies, it’s time to get a crash course in mobile cuisine. The next one, hosted by The Daily City, will be held in the Fashion Square Mall’s illustrious parking lot, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Aug. 21. Sample goodies from any of the nearly 20 (!) food trucks that’ll be serving. Despite the plethora of vendors, long lines are inevitable, but thankfully nothing makes waiting outside on a hot, August evening easy like a cold beer (which will be served from any number of stations).
12. Get Wet n’ Wild Wastey-Faced As with any good list, you’ve got to include items that just might send you to the big tourist trap in the sky a little early. Case in point: Wet ‘n Wild serves liquor, Wet ‘n Wild has water slides and Wet ‘n Wild will let you careen down any precarious ride you want as long as you can climb to the top of it. So go on, drunky, dare yourself to get blackout hammered and take on The Bomb Bay death-drop, or, better yet, go wake boarding. If you wake up the next day, congratulations! You win!

What is your preferred cure for a hangover? “I don’t like it, but it’s Menudo – the soup, not the band.” Richard the Adequate, magician “Keep drinking. Seriously. Not to excess. But a bit of ‘hair of the dog that bit you’ can get your head back on straight, your headache gone and help you face the day after a night of partying. Trust this party girl: The only way to get over a hangover is to keep drinking. “ Jodi Thomas, blogger “Usually water helps, a cold shower, cartoons and more sleep.” Robin Osgood, photographer “I get hangovers like they are on fire! My remedy is drinking water while drinking, FOOD, three Advils and pray to god that I can sleep it off throughout the morning. Oh, and stay away from the sugary drinks.” Alicia Davis, bartender “Pedialyte, masturbation and General Tso’s tofu. It’s the holy trinity for a hangover cure.” Karen Russell, local artist “The best cure for a hangover is to not go to bed till you are sober. If you go to bed when you are drunk, then you wake up with a hangover, but if you stay up all night, you will work the drunk outta yo-self.” Youngheartz, DJ “Proactive approach. One water per drink. Make it a contest with friends. Chug water after you chug shots contests! Or just wake up and get buzzed. People say Bloody Marys are the cure, but who are we kidding? Booze is booze.” Josh Call, bartender “Temporary ban from existence via Tylenol PM.” Lucy Vardøgr, DJ “Two energy pills, two crippie swats and two huge glasses of water. It works every time.” Irene Pardo, DJ “CHIPOTLE!” Kevin Collier, promoter “You have to be approaching sober to be hungover. Who has time for that?” Will Walker, bar owner “Emergen-C! And maybe a cheeseburger with fries.” Jessa Hartzell, roller derby girl

The Falcon Bar C COOL While we were out drinking one night, we realized that for a town that owes its existence to an animation studio, Orlando sure is lacking in art bars. So we’re giving the thumbs up and an exasperated “What the hell took you so long?” to Mother Falcon Clothing for opening The Falcon Bar right next door to its shop. The space is soon to be home to a revolving art showcase and selfdescribed “cutting edge” arts-and-bar experience. It’ll also give you a chance to put your money where your mouth is next time you and your drunk buddies come up with a stupid catchphrase and can’t stop yelling “That should totally be a T-shirt!”

To sweeten the deal (and help you forget about the mosquitoes), they also have drink specials, including $5 minipitchers of Yuengling (about 3 glasses worth), and Jello shot trivia before the movie.
