JULY 2011

Sometimes I Just Want To Hate Everything. When my parents moved me from New York to Orlando they ruined my life. I was once a very happy little catholic school girl roller-skating on the sidewalks of Amityville (yes, that Amityville), and my future looked bright. I was destined for New York nativeness, a high-profile career writing for the New Yorker, an apartment on Spring Street and an extremely unattractive accent that would stay with me for the rest of my life.

DRUNK

by Meghan Schalk

But no. When my dad got a job as a Chicago White Sox scout down here I was quickly whisked away from my potential perfect existence and condemned to grow up in a state where I would spontaneously combust the second I sat in my car after an hour of shopping in Target, where any guy I dated had a secret desire to wear camouflage 365 days out of the year and where working for a rat and making millions of spoiled, screaming children happy was the biggest career move I could ever make.

The next thing I knew he was walking me through a hillbilly vortex that landed us in some sort of Lake County-esque bizarro Scruffy’s that reminded me nothing of the one that used to be downtown. As two older women with bleach-blond hair and an extra set of boobs on their backs crooned one ’90s country song after another, I looked at Paul as a single tear rolled down my face, gently touched his hand and whispered to him, “I fucking hate you. Get me the fuck out of here.”

I’m going to be honest. Sometimes I feel like Orlando is sucking the life out of me and leaving me to rot, and I dream about the “what could have beens.” Yes, I could have left. I still can. I just don’t. There’s just something about this stupid city that has kept me here for longer than I planned.

There was just no use. I was in one of those moods and nothing could save me.

Maybe the problem also lies in the fact that I had recently come back from an amazing trip to NYC, one that was comprised of endless nights of drinking in the East Village until 5 a.m., screaming a Green Day song along with the rest of the room during a live-band karaoke set at Arlene’s Grocery and smoking wee … eeping willows … in the art gallery of Lit Lounge. Rooftop dinners and dancing, Alexander McQueen exhibits at the Met, something new every day and night. No, Orlando isn’t awful; it’s just really mundane and hard to return to sometimes. It’s true. I should never go on vacation because I always come back a big giant baby who refuses to jump into her normal routine again. Unfortunately, though I would have preferred to spend my remaining nights on earth curled up in the bottom of my bathtub with the shower water hitting my naked body Crying Game-style, sobbing, “Why me god, why this life!?” my friend Paul thought it would be healthy for me to get out, at least for the night.

NK

n

“Have you been to Scruffy Murphy’s since it reopened up on Edgewater?” he asked. “No,” I pouted.

I threw myself out of the glass window of the pub, got in the car with Paul and ventured over to the Copper Rocket where I desperately tried to enjoy shoving deep-fried bacon down my throat and watching a very depressing game of trivia, complete with a group of zombies in half-dead participation. After kicking Paul in the nuts for that one, we got in his car again, and we were on our way to Will’s Pub when I decided to just call it a night. I was done trying to make a big city out of my rigor mortis-like town. Arriving home, I ran upstairs to toss my body off the balcony, when I heard a couple of AIM alerts coming from my laptop. Kcoll97: Come to Battyfang tomorrow. It’s fucking fun. It’s at Pulse, you like that place. Kcoll97: And dress raunchy. All the girls do. I stared at my computer screen and didn’t answer him right away. Is this what my life has come to? A masquerade ball at a gay bar thrown by the Smile for Camera/Takeovr crew? I mean, just looking at the pictures of this group grinding on one another makes me feel drunk and pregnant. They encompass everything I hate. I know that makes me sound like the judgmental bitter bitch I am. Something I have sadly been since I was 21 (I can’t help it. I just hate you all). Do I really want to do this? Sure, why the fuck not. Can it really get any worse? TO BE CONTINUED…

POTSIE

by Jeff Orlando

This month, DRINK talks to Potsie, a band creating a name for itself through thunderous rock performances laced with sticky pop anthems and back-alley lullabies. We asked the peculiar power trio’s Steve Garron (guitar, vox) and Erin Nolan (bass, vox) about the band’s past, present and future in the volatile landscape of Orlando’s rock & roll scene. DRINK: When did Potsie form, and what is a ‘Potsie?’ Steve: We are a 1-year old band, as of May 2010. Erin: What is a ‘Potsie?’ – Use your imagination. DRINK: All three members of Potsie have played in established bands around town. Precious, The Little Debbies and Cotton Candy Cookies and Cream to name a few. What brought you together for this project? Steve: Erin was the force. She pulled me out of retirement. I’d been on the down low for five or six years, and she didn’t think I should be done writing songs. I jammed with her a couple times, and it was a blast. She brought in Dana Fasano (drums) to jam with us and it just

clicked over an improv jam session. Then I wrote “Drakkar Noir,” Erin dubbed us “Potsie,” and we were off. DRINK: Who and what are your influences? Steve: My big influence is honest writing. Hank Williams Sr. was the first music I remember listening to, and the Sex Pistols got me into punk. Erin: Prog rock. I can’t play it adequately like my idols, but I love it. Also: women who play instruments and strive to play them to the best of their abilities. DRINK: Some of your songs are heavy, while others are veritable pop tunes. Is the balance difficult to maintain, or does it come naturally? Continued on page 24

Steve: I’ve always enjoyed bouncing between the opposite poles of music – extreme highs and extreme lows and everything in between. ... That’s what life is, and that’s how my songwriting goes. I will use any color I can to paint my pictures in sound. DRINK: Who writes the songs, and what are they usually about? Steve: I seem to write songs that cut to the bone, and they usually cut me. I’m masochistic like that. I’ll write a song about a terrible event I would rather forget. But now I also try to have fun with some of the songs, which I never did in my other band. DRINK: The song “Drakkar Noir” reminds me of high school. Did anyone in the band ever wear that cologne? Erin: I’m pretty positive Steve did. Dana’s probably more of a JOOP guy. It just smells like vodka and anger. Steve: I’ve never worn it on purpose. DRINK: WPRK radio has been kind to you guys. Would you consider your songs radio friendly in other markets? Steve: WPRK, and college radio, is an anomaly in the radio world. Luckily for bands like Potsie, music marketing has moved way beyond terrestrial radio – although our generation didn’t grow up with this Interweb thing, so we’re still catching up some.

DRINK: How do you feel Potsie fits into the local bar scene? Are people here receptive to the music, or are there a lot of blank faces at your shows? Steve: Our shows are fun and kind of intimate. People are showing us lots of love. It’s like we’re honestly having fun, so the audience seems to really respond back. It’s a definite change for me. I used to sonically berate my audience, and now I’d just rather kick back and rock out. DRINK: Does the band currently have a favorite venue to play? Erin: Our favorite venue is any one that will take us, but our homebase is usually Will’s Pub. We love playing there. DRINK: What would your ideal show be like? Erin: A shitload of adoring fans, free beer tickets, a strong set that includes with two improv jams, a cool sound person, money, free beer tickets ... Did we say that already? DRINK: If you could sum up this band on a foam beer coozie, what would it say? Erin: Potsie – We sound like what Tommy Chong’s basement smells like.

PHOTO: NICOLE KIBERT

DRINK: What is next for Potsie? Steve: We are waist deep into recording our first record with Rich Ott out at John Blanche Studios in Altamonte, so putting out that record is next. After that, we hope to branch out and play beyond Orlando. Erin: We are also starting to dabble in the merch world a bit. We now have new T-shirts for sale and are working on getting those stickers. Stay tuned!

NEW TO TOWN BY JON BERGQUIST

NEW TOWN If there’s anything Orlando has to offer to boost the pathetic economy, it’s the plethora of serviceindustry jobs that are always available around town. Thanks to the growing number of drinking establishments here, dropping out of UCF to pursue a career in bartending no longer seems like such a bad idea after all. Here’s a look at some of the newbies on our blocks.

RANGETSU’S ORCHID LOUNGE

THE BRIDGE

901 S. ORLANDO AVE., MAITLAND

55 WEST PINE ST.

One could envision James Bond spending an evening here. It’s that sophisticated. Rangetsu’s Orchid Lounge may be new to town, but the venue’s legacy dates back to 1947, when it began as a small family business in Tokyo. The company took root in Orlando as a restaurant on I-Drive in 1986 where RanGetsu of Tokyo operated until last year, when it closed to make preparations to move to Maitland. During the day, Rangetsu focuses on providing a delectable Japanese dining experience. After dinner, the Orchid Lounge opens, and the emphasis shifts to providing a unique nightlife destination. Be sure to check out the weekly wine and sake tasting event held on the terrace. $10 gets you unlimited samples from 6 – 10 pm every Wednesday. There’s even a saxophone player to serenade you while you drink.

The Bridge is a new bar on Church Street, not to be confused with the Bridge Orlando, which is a church in Longwood. Nor is it to be confused with the Bridge at Orlando, an assisted-living community off Rouse Road. Those are the fi rst two results of a Google search for “The Bridge Orlando,” so be mindful of that when searching for this bar online. Though it may cause some search-engine confusion, the name of this new bar is appropriate. It’s literally located on the Church Street bridge, which means customers have a great view of Church Street. DJs spin house, trance, and dance music. Hookah is also available. The Bridge is owned and operated by the same techsavvy people that run Touch, so it will be interesting to see where this bridge ultimately leads.

BAR ONE

TERRACE 390

1 S. ORANGE AVE.

390 N. ORANGE AVE.

Bar One is located in the historic YowellDuckworth building on the corner of Orange Avenue and Central Boulevard. The building has stood since 1913, and it’s best known as the former home of Fusion, where the infamous photos of Casey Anthony partaking in a hot-body contest were taken. If you’re feeling dejected because you couldn’t get a courtroom seat, a night at Bar One might be the next best thing. Bar One is a multilevel facility with an outdoor patio and dance floors on both levels where guests can get down to top 40 and dance music. VIP bottle service is also available, as that’s become something of a standard feature for clubs in Orlando.

Terrace 390 is an elegant eatery located inside the Bank of America building. With a location like that you can rest assured that the riff raff of Orange Avenue will be kept at bay – the proprietors have their eyes focused more on the business-minded crowd. Archaic paper menus have been replaced by iPads. Guests have the option of dining either indoors or outside on the 10,000-square-foot courtyard. Customers may park in the Bank of America garage for free. Terrace 390 takes and encourages reservations.

Urban ReThink C COOL We hate to be doubting Thomases over here, but we weren’t too sure about the “open space for everyone to do everything” concept when Urban ReThink opened a little while back. Not saying Orlando is a lazy couch potato, but it’s hard to get this town motivated to do anything, much less populate an open calendar with cool things in a bitchin’ Thornton Park space. But then Bad Film Appreciation Society, yoga, There Will Be Words and local strategy sessions started popping up all the damn time. We hate to be wrong (because we never are), so keep it going, Orlando, and don’t make us take this Cool stamp away.

Local Arts Scene C COOL Anyone else notice all the local art springing up all over the place? We have new galleries, like Blank Space and Substance, rotating exhibits at local joints like Milk Bar and Will’s and Pom Pom’s and even a weekly art night where artists can make their art while you dine at OLV Cafe in SODO. Sure, it’s not all great art, but it’s local, booming and way more exciting than $500 portraits of daisies at the Winter Park Art Festival.
