MAY 2011
The Weird Age. There’s this age. To put it simply, it’s the “what in the hell am I doing with my life” age, and it lands somewhere between our mid 20s and early 30s. Suddenly you don’t belong in Orlando anymore, your job is awful, you’re scrambling to find yourself, you badger yourself about things you haven’t accomplished, sabotage relationships because you’re “not where you need to be” and you are desperately trying to hold on to the last years of your youth while attempting to enter adulthood at the same time.
DRINK DRANK
DRUNK
by Meghan Schalk
Your dating life suffers because you can’t fully admit to yourself that you should probably be dating someone your own age, of your own level of intelligence, so you keep trying out the 19 year olds (because they’re hot, obviously), and you wonder why they dump you when they need to find themselves at 22. Or you do date someone your own age and they, too, are in their own awkward stage in life, which only results in nightly pity parties and discussions about where you both need to be, but you never actually do anything to change your situations. It’s all just a big fucking mess. At this age you’re probably not quite as successful as you had always pictured yourself, and though you want to be successful, you’re still content to “play” a little longer, even if doing so gets you absolutely nowhere for another fi ve years. You see the accomplished single old people dressed up like young people in the pictures at Blue Martini or fancy bars like Luma, and you’re not quite ready to be them yet. To be honest, the thought of being them in 10 or 15 years scares the shit out of you. You don’t have to be married with babies strewn about the room, but please, don’t let us be slinging vodka out of our glasses across the bar when we’re 40. As you can tell, I’m at the weird age now. Bar-BQ-Bar pretty much birthed me into our nightlife here. It is where I felt comfortable with my fellow soul searchers and rather pretentious artists of all sorts (really, just former nerds in high school) and where the Pixies’ “Gigantic” could play fi ve times in one night and everyone would be OK with it. There was something warm and easy about Bar-BQ-Bar for a long time and while I may not have known everyone there, it was such a group of regulars who had come the same nights as me for so many years, it was as if we were all friends anyway, because of this dirty little bar we had in common.
NK
Nine years later (Jesus, shoot me) it’s just not the same. The clientele has drastically changed and I’m lucky if I see ONE familiar face. It’s sad, I miss the way it was, I hate that none of the kids in there probably have any clue who the fuck the Pixies even are … BUT … I accept it. Playboy after all, has just ranked UCF as one of the top party schools in the nation (so proud of you, Orlando) and it was only a matter of time before these brilliant wizards of our city infiltrated our sacred stomping grounds. Plus, it’s my fault really. I’m at that weird age, after all, still trying to find where I belong and bitter about how things are changing while my life is still sadly the same. If you do find yourself at this stupid, awkward age, the best thing you can do is quit whining and just try to enjoy it. Your place may no longer be in the photo booth of Bar-BQ-Bar making out with a drunken random or sleeping on the bathroom fl oor of Scruffy Murphy’s for an hour because you drank too many Irish Car Bombs and Black Russians (don’t fucking judge me), but you know what? Being able to successfully keep your head out of the toilet isn’t such a bad thing. If you’re in your early 20s by all means, do it up, barf on top of the nearest Ms. Pacman Arcade Game, pee on the stoops of the downtown churches or watch your chunks fl y across the side of your friend’s car as you lean your head out the window on the ride home. Yes, I am speaking from experience and, yes, it was a fantastic un-regrettable time of my life. But I digress. If you’re at the weird age, get your shit together, get out of the house and just try to enjoy yourself before your sexy parts begin to shrivel. While I’m not 21 anymore, or not exactly where I want to be in life, I’m also not even close to being 45 and spilling vodka all over my lawyer friends all while still desperately trying to hold on to my youth. OK, 50, for all the 45 year olds who are booing me right now. Regardless, I still have time to change things, and as ancient as I think of myself sometimes, I’m still rather young. So, it’s not all that bad. Not yet anyway.

Gidget Galore DRINK: How did you come up with your name? My name used to be Bubbles Galore, and then I started doing themed outfi ts (like Gidget Goes to the Beach, Gidget Goes Camping, etc) and it just evolved from there. DRINK: Describe your typical day. I typically roll out of bed very early, around 2 or 3 pm. After a “high-protein” breakfast with my boyfriend, it’s off for a day of shopping with friends. I always am shopping for bargains at the Magic Mall or the Super Beauty Depot on the corner of Hiawassee and Silver Star in the heart of Pine Hills. In need of nourishment, I visit my favorite Orlando eatery, Pom Pom’s Teahouse and Sandwicheria. The Fu Manchu and peanut noodles are not to be missed! Then it’s off to the Parliament House to start getting dolled up!

You can see Gidget Galore Wednesday nights at the Parliament House hosting Camp Drag. Showtimes start at 11 pm. You can also catch her in My Big Gay Gameshow on Thursdays from 5:30-9 pm.
DRINK: How did you come up with your name? I was married to a girl for two years. When I was 20 years old, I didn’t know there were people out there like me, or gays in general. So I did what I thought you were supposed to do and get married. Her name was Mary, and we talked about having kids. In those two years I discovered who I was and where I was going, and one of the names we had chosen for a girl was Danielle. So I chose it for myself. DRINK: Describe your typical day. I have a full time job as the corporate entertainment director for Funky Monkey. A big part of my day is lining up the shows and choreography, music, costumes, etc. for the evening. Around 5 pm I’m putting it all together and by 7 pm going on stage. DRINK: What draws you to drag performance? I guess I got into it in general because there weren’t many career opportunities that were for guys who wanted to be girls, except for the club scene. They are the safe house. I was able to perform in a place I felt safe and become who I wanted to be. They gave me a place to start a career. Some of us are born performers, and it clicked.
I feel safe underneath the spotlight. It’s the safest place in the world. DRINK: Have you ever had any embarrassing experiences while performing? Broken a heel or lost a wig? Two years ago on New Years Eve. It was when I was first building a relationship with the Funky Monkey. They weren’t really doing shows, and I was trying to convince them that shows were a good idea. The place was packed. I was performing to “Hanky Panky” while sitting on a guy’s lap. I bent over, and when I did I broke my nose on a chair in front of me. I could feel the warm blood oozing down my face and the front of my dress, and the song was only half done! I used the joke, “The show must go on,” and I kept going, minus the spotlight. By 1 a.m. however, my nose had swollen and I had two black eyes. They either gave me the job so I wouldn’t file suit or because they felt bad. DRINK: If you could foresee your life 10 years from now, what does it look like or what can you see yourself doing? I am one of those people that believes that they can do anything in the world. When you can be born as a male and pass off living as a
female, you can pretty much achieve anything you set your mind to. Fortunately for me, anything I’ve put my mind to I’ve succeeded at. I never want to be in a position where I am doing something that I’m not loving. I don’t know what I’ll be doing in 10 years, but I know that I’ll be good at it. DRINK: What are your thoughts about the Orlando gay scene? Is there something about our city that keeps you here? The scene has always taken care of me. They’ve protected me, cared for me, provided me with a successful life, no matter how many rumors or stories that you hear. I know I can look to my community and they are there for me. DRINK: What’s your favorite drink? I’m a wine kinda girl.
You can see Danielle Hunter at Bananas Gospel Brunch on Sundays, with seating at 11:00 am and 12:30 pm, Broadway Tuesdays at Bananas with seating at 7:30 pm and 9 pm, and Fridays at Funky Monkey on I-Drive starting at 8:30 pm for a Las Vegasstyle show.

he fact is, if you’re a beer drinker, now is the time to revel. We are living in an era of beer advocacy that combines brewing traditions and artisan craftsmanship with some downright American inventiveness. The craft beer trend has unearthed so many unique and delicious beers in our city in the past year that many of us are gaining a new perspective on alcoholic indulgence – making “quality over quantity” our modus operandi.
T
So how did we get to this point? Well here’s a historical summation: Sometime in the late 1970s, beer enthusiasts began experimenting with home brewing. Small batches of beer were made in garages and wherever else people could make a mess in the pursuit of making a better beer. This pastime steadily caught on over the years, and it began to spread like wildfire, especially in the mid 1990s. According to brewersassociation.org, the number of microbreweries in operation has tripled over the past decade and a half to somewhere around 1,600. Yeah, we have some drinking to do. Lucky for us we don’t have to go very far. Beer distributors are criss-crossing the states to deliver the goods. What began as a handful of more-or-less novelty bars carrying a diverse assortment of beer has erupted into a phenomenon. Local bars such as Redlight Redlight and Underground Bluz have been at it for years, but these days you can find a growing craft beer selection in all your local stomping grounds, like Will’s Pub, The Copper Rocket Pub, Stardust Coffee & Video and Eola Wine Bar. Newcomers to the scene, Milk Bar, Blank Space and Sandwich Bar, were launched as specialty beer bars recently, and they are making names for themselves as such. Even our stalwart venues Sportstown Billiards and Big Daddy’s are onboard, expanding their routine selections by several fold. And Publix! That’s right. Publix is now stocking regional craft favorites by Terrapin and Tampa’s own Cigar City, among others.

If, for some reason, you think this is all hype, consider these facts: 1) World of Beer – a bar that probably doesn’t need any more description – has recently opened two Orlando locations. Let’s just say it’s a beer Mecca; 2) a new restaurant bar called Draft Global Beer Lounge and Grill will soon open on W. Church Street near the Amway Center, and it will feature upwards of 40 draft beers and 100 bottles. Go *hiccup* Magic!; 3) Lake Mary will soon be home to Pint American Gastropub, a swanky beer bar with dozens of beers and an impressive liquor selection. There’s no telling what else is around the bend. So, let’s get back to you. You walk into a bar and are now overwhelmed with choices. Instead of a bartender rattling off a short list of available beers, the inventory has become so specialized, bountiful and subject to rotation that you are either handed a menu or shown a cooler to peruse. If you’re a beer veteran, you simply bask in the options. If not, never fear! It’s likely that informed witnesses are standing by. People seem to love to share their opinions and suggestions on beer, so just ask for a recommendation. (Tip: It’s a perfect icebreaker for approaching a new person at the bar!) Or ask for a draft sample. Bartenders realize that many of these beverages are unfamiliar to us, so they’ll usually let you try something before committing you to a full pint. Now go out, be unafraid and try something new. The moment has come to awaken your palate from its slumber induced by years of settling for watereddown corporate fizz. Life is too short to drink lousy beer, and now you have no excuse to limit yourself to it. Cin cin!

cool Here at Drink we’re dedicated to telling you what’s cool and what’s not because you’re just not cool enough to know any of this yourself.
Food Trucks RFC REALLY FUCKING COOL We all know the drill. Your eyes were bigger than your liver, and the only thing that’ll even remotely turn your wobble into an amble is a nice midnight snack. Even your alcohol-tattered brain knows Taco Bell is a stupid, stupid idea, but what else is there? Food on wheels! Thank the boozy gods, the foodtruck craze has finally hit Orlando, which means that someone – like Big Wheel Provisions or the Korean BBQ Taco Box – will be more than happy to sling gourmet, handcrafted food at your drunken head, giving you the fuel necessary to continue the drinking (of course).
One80 Grey Goose Lounge C COOL We almost don’t want to admit this, but that rooftop bar on top of the Amway Center is actually kinda cool. Yes, it’s obvious and fake and stupid – but that’s what a really good club should be. Plus, you can’t argue with no cover, express elevator service to the top, conversation-friendly music volume, and the best damn panorama any Orlando nightlife spot can offer. Of course, since no specialty mixer is less than $13, the drink prices are gonna force you to live in a cardboard box, but ohh … that viewwwww.
