Sunday…Fun… Day? I am not a Sunday Fundayer. There is no part of my body that wants to get up at 10 am to make myself look human just so I can do vodka shots in my neighborhood bar at 11. To be honest, you can go fuck yourself if you think I am willing to wake up and leave my house for ANYTHING before 2 in the afternoon on the weekend. Not your funeral, not your birthday party and certainly not to drink a stupid mimosa over brunch. Why I did it this past Sunday is beyond me, but I applaud my friend Liz for achieving the impossible and getting me to join her at Thornton Park’s Graffiti Junktion on a recent Sunday. I applaud her and I hate her.

How do I describe my fi rst Sunday Funday at Graffi ti Junktion? Hmm. Let’s do this. Picture me as a pimply faced reject walking into the senior cafeteria on my fi rst day of high school. Every seat is taken, everyone seems to know one another and everybody is having a great time. And then there’s me. All alone and holding my lunch tray (Yeungling), because none of my friends have the same lunch as me. Or I don’t really have any friends – just my nerdy sidekick, Liz. This is not a dig at the Junktion, of course. It has a crazy-packed bar, great food and they definitely know how to run a successful Sunday Funday. Nor is it a dig at Liz, because she really did know the lay of the land just as much as anyone else there and had significantly more friends surrounding her than I did (Liz: 5 Meghan: 0). It’s simply a heads up to anyone new to the joint. Get there early and bring friends. This isn’t a Friday night where you can post up with your pal in hopes of meeting someone new. Most of these people have enough good-looking friends of their own to screw. I mean it when I say do your very best to avoid looking like a creepy turd with a beer in your hand scanning the room for someone to talk to. This isn’t the place for that. “So you’ve never been here on a Sunday? What do you think?” Liz asked me. Hmm. How do I answer Liz without insulting anyone who happens to enjoy drinking their guts out in the middle of the afternoon while surrounded by endless turkey burgers and girls doing lemon-drop shots in midriff-baring Magic shirts? I looked down at my Megadeath T-shirt and black blazer. I so did not fi t in.
NK
I sipped my beer and pretended not to hear her. I looked around at the people outside playing a bean-bag toss game, groups of friends greeting each other at the bar. Yes, it was cute. But then I glanced around the room in search of just one familiar face ... just one ... and failed. I tried to get a buzz ... and failed. I tried to enjoy the game and then realized I didn’t give a shit about basketball. I gave it my all (sorta), but in the end I came to the conclusion that I was completely out of my comfort zone. Although surrounded by flat screens, drink specials and yes, excellent burgers, I realized something important: I am so not a Sunday Fundayer. I’m a cranky, sit at home, try to watch as many awful movies as I can on Netflix streaming-er.
“A girl with a bright blue shirt that read ‘Sunday Funday!’ skipped passed me. I mind-punched her.” I sat at the bar and blankly stared at my phone. Guys yelled excitedly at the game in my ear, the smell of fried food mixed with my Saturday night hangover made me want to barf, people reached around me and balanced four shots over my head…no. No. No. A girl with a bright blue shirt that read “Sunday Funday!” skipped passed me. I mind-punched her. But at least I gave it an honest shot. I can completely understand why Sunday Funday is so popular in Orlando, though. The lack of cultural activities and the fact that everything is closed (or closes early) so we can pretend to worship Jesus or spend more time with our family definitely doesn’t help. We’re just trying to make the final day of the weekend feel as good as it can. I totally get it. I just don’t want to be a part of it. Not at 11 a.m. So here’s to Sunday Funday and to Graffi ti Junktion for doing it right. And here’s to me staying in the comfort of my own home while you all enjoy it.

FURTHER SEEMS FOREVER
by Jeremy Perez-Cruz
It’s a story you’ve heard countless times. A band works hard, gains devoted fans, suffers from constant member changes and eventually breaks up, only to reform years later (to much excitement) with the original lineup. I recently had a chance to chat with founding member and drummer Steve Kleisath and talk a little bit about Further Seems Forever’s resurgence and the trails of being in a band. Why did you guys decide to take a break and stop playing and what prompted this reunion? Well, in 2006 the lineup at the time had me as the only original member still touring, and it just felt more like a cover band than the actual group, and I thought it was time to call it a day and pursue other music projects and work in general. Then, about a year later, Chris wound up moving back to South Florida from New York City, where he had been living, and we all wound up getting together to hang again, and kicked around the idea of getting the band back together again, and it finally came to fruition earlier last year, as far as getting everybody’s schedules to align, etc.

Was it a difficult decision to exclude members like Derick, who played with you guys for years but wasn’t technically an original member? Not really, because after the band called it a day in 2006, Derick wound up moving to Germany, and is married with a kid now, and is doing great in his teaching of music, and his other musical endeavors. Plus Chris wanted it to be the original lineup, since we are going to do “The Moon Is Down” reunion shows. It’s only logical to have that lineup perform it. Continued on page 18

“Orlando d may y be in p 10 cities i for the top d response” n crowd What do you least enjoy about the songwriting process? Getting everybody together, schedule wise, to actually work on songs. The rest of the guys are married with kids and full-time jobs, so it can be quite the mission to plan to meet and focus on writing. When you guys are having a hard time working together, or a song just isn’t coming together, what do you like to do in order to relax and enable yourselves to come back in and be productive? Well I think every artist or group experiences “walls” sometimes when you seemingly reach a plateau in the writing of a song, and you don’t quite know how or where it is going to finish sometimes, so sometimes its just that…time to reflect, take a break from a song and then come back to it. You guys have put out a handful of records. Each one sounds a bit different, and much of that is attributed to the different singers, but how do you decide “Yes, this is the record we want to put out,” and why would/should an audience be interested in your tastes during that given time? Well we write what comes out of us, first and foremost, when we feel it is done or ready, then we launch it. Other people being interested or liking what we put out is just icing on the cake, to be honest. If we feel happy or fulfilled with what we wrote and finished, then that is the first priority.

What do you consider to be your weaknesses as a band, and what do you do to overcome them? Consistency of motivation of trying to set up regular times and routines for rehearsal and practice, and I don’t think there is any overcoming it, ultimately. But we usually wind up going through enough phases where we get stuff accomplished. What musicians are you guys currently listening to and/or do you admire? Why? How has that changed from when the original line up first played together? We are all pretty eclectic in what we listen to and are influenced by many different styles and artists. Too many artists to name, but I have noticed that we are all on the same page in our love for the group The Constantines lately, to name one. Much of the info for the FSF reunion has come via Twitter and a teaser page. When you guys started the band the internet wasn’t really a viable tool for promotion. Aside from illegal downloads, how do you think the internet has affected musicians, both positively and negatively? I think in a positive way, it has become easier to do things on your own, such as creating a website to get the word out about your project, networking nationally and worldwide is more feasable through the internet than it was before this option. Even when people download your stuff illegally,
initially, if they like what they hear, then that leads to wanting your physical product or attendance at a live show possibly. You guys have played some big shows in Orlando and you recorded here in the past (with James Wisner). How does Orlando compare to other cities your played/ worked in? It’s been a while since we played Orlando, actually, but we always had great shows there, and Orlando may be in the top 10 cities for crowd response, if I remember correctly. Orlando is a transient town. I really don’t know many people from Orlando. However, folks seem to keep returning. Throughout the years everyone from your band, for the most part, has continued to call Florida home. Is there something special to this state that keeps you around/coming back? It’s just where we all met each other, and currently this is where we all are, and we are content being here, especially weather wise in the winter.

No one enjoys smelling like an ashtray – including smokers. But the bar scene here is generally permissive toward smoking, so we’ve all got to deal with the stinky clothing, polluted hair, burning eyes and congested sinuses (not to mention any long-term health effects) when we go out. For those who want a break from the smoke, I want to draw your attention to a few of the happening nightspots in town that are designated as non-smoking. This month I was tasked with creating a St. Patrick’s themed drink menu. Unfortunately, I’m not into green food coloring or Bailey’s in my drinks, so what that left me with was Whisk(e)y. Awesome, right? Unfortunately on my list of whiskey favorites the Irish varietal falls at the bottom, all the way at the bottom. In fact, I don’t care for it at all. So, instead of lying to you about the merits of Irish Whisky, I’m going to just give you a flight of American whiskey. As a consolation, I made the color theme green. (for St. Patrick’s Day. Clever, right?) Here are four of my favorite sub-fifty-dollar American whiskeys in no particular order:

100 PROOF, BOURBON, 10 YEAR, $35.
Four Roses Single Barrel Four roses has quickly become my go-to Bourbon. They have 5 varieties available in the US but the most common are Small Batch and Single Barrel. I prefer the Single Barrel over the Small Batch. Its fruity aroma paired with notes of honey and maple make it undeniably smooth and sweet. However, the finish is really hot. You’ll have a nice warmth lingering in your mouth for a good 30 seconds after sipping. It’s a nice feeling that’s perfect for cooler weather. Enjoy this one neat (straight, no-ice), over rocks or in a cocktail. Just do me a personal favor and don’t mix it with Coke.
114.3 PROOF, BOURBON, 15 YEAR, $45.
90 PROOF, RYE, 6 YEAR, $25.
90 PROOF, RYE, 10 YEAR, $49.
Noah’s Mill Sazerac Rye Hudson Manhattan Noah’s is the highest proof of the There was a time in the not so flight, which is fitting for its age. distant past that Rye was near Rye It’s remarkably well balanced and impossible to come by. As I has strong wood and earth flavors. Most friends who’ve sampled it commonly refer to the flavor as nutty. Because of the proof, beginning whiskey enthusiasts will probably want to enjoy this on the rocks as opposed to neat. I recommend grabbing some tovolo ice molds off of Amazon and plopping a single two inch cube your old fashioned glass. It’ll melt slower and allow you to take your time while enjoying. Kick it up another notch by using bottled water in your molds.
became interested in mixology, I noticed a lot of the pre-prohibition recipes called for a Rye instead of Bourbon. The problem is Rye takes a long time to make properly and distilleries didn’t anticipate its resurgence into popularity. In my search I was only able to find Wild Turkey, r1 and Sazerac. Of the bunch, Sazerac was my favorite and has continued to be a staple in my liquor cabinet. Like most Rye, Sazerac is exceptionally spicy. That spice is always present, but so is a malty sweetness. It’s very peppery in character and has a long finish. Not exactly a daily whiskey, but it goes great in classic cocktails like the Manhattan or, its namesake, the Sazerac.
This is hands down my favorite whiskey right now. I sort of cheated because, although it’s only $49, it’s also only a half bottle. Doesn’t matter - despite being a fairly young distillery it’s worth every penny. Tuthilltown distillery makes a wide variety of whiskey, all of them are delicious but the Hudson Manhattan Rye is my favorite of the bunch. Every time I have guests over I force this upon them, and they usually thank me unless they are requesting vodka, in which case I politely ask them to leave. This Rye is insanely complex. Bergamot, apple and spearmint join the usual rye notes of cinnamon and clove. Rye tends to be fairly sharp but the Hudson is unbelievably smooth and floral, yet retains the lively, peppery characteristics of rye. I suppose you could use this as a mixing whiskey, but that would be wasting it. Drink this neat and only neat. Seriously, put down the ice cubes.
