I Love Sunsets And Long Walks On The Beach. Wine Down Wednesday at Urban Flats might just be the most popular happy hour in Orlando. From 5-8 p.m. every Wednesday, $20 dollars gets you unlimited samples of select wines and all the tiny squares of flatbread pizza you can get your hands on (that other people have probably also put their hands on). Sharing food with strangers, yum. The wonderful thing about this evening is that you can find out whether it’s your cup of tea without even leaving your car. While waiting at the light at the corner of Orange Avenue and Church Street, you can simply turn your head to the left and feast your eyes upon an impressive number of “welldressed” (read: fashionable enough to stick a button-up shirt on) young executives standing on the ground floor of The Plaza.

With that said, if I could have written my column from my car I would have. Unfortunately it was doubtful that anyone from this crowd would ever approach me in my 2001 Chevy Cavalier to supply me with material, so I needed to go in. The experience made me realize how awful it must be to be a guy and have to approach women. It also made me realize how much I hate being the woman the guys are approaching “Rock, paper scissors.” “I’m sorry?” My friend, who was with me that night, Sarah asked. A man, all 5-foot-6 of him, and his friend were suddenly standing in front of her. “Rock, paper scissors. If I win, you both have to join us for dinner and drinks. If you win, you can stay here,” he told her. Now, I’m not stupid. I know what two girls standing next to a bar looks like. We look like blowjob whores, obviously. We couldn’t possibly just be enjoying one another’s company over a couple of glasses of wine. What we really want is to play rock, paper, scissors and join two complete strangers for dinner, a drink and a late night bang-out session. Mmm, ideal. Anyway, it’s inevitable that any man who plays rock, paper, scissors is going to pick the rock. It’s the biggest, manliest thing he can be, and that’s pretty important when you are playing a game created by third graders. So it wasn’t a shock when my trusty piece of heavy-duty paper mutilated his rock, and he and his friend were on their way, minus escorts for the night. Ah, winning.

Sarah and I decided to take our glasses of wine from the lurky-lurker bar to the lurkfest outside. In seconds we had two new friends again. They paired up with us and got right to their dateinterview questions. Mine went like this before it abruptly ended. “So, Meghan. What are you passionate about? What really inspires you?” Sigh. He had clearly sprayed himself with E-Harmony before leaving his house. “Well, I used to have this dream, “ I said very seriously, as he poised himself to listen, giving me his full attention, “to do the Claymation on Robot Chicken.” He just stared at me, as expected. “But the show isn’t even that funny anymore and…” I continued. He interrupted me, clearly not into Cartoon Network. “Ok. Well. What do you like to do? What do you do for fun, or what relaxes you and makes you feel completely at ease?” “Hmm, what do YOU like to do?” I asked, tipping the interrogation lamp light toward him. “I love the beach. The beach is amazing. Especially walking on the beach. I love sunsets actually,” he started. “Oh, sunsets, huh? You’d have to be a pretty big asshole not to like a sunset.” I replied. “I’m sorry?” “I said you’d have to be a pretty big asshole to not like a sunset,” I told him. “I mean, have you ever heard someone say they HATE sunsets?” Realizing that we were not a match made in heaven, he started looking around the room for his next great love. I sympathize with men, but seriously, skip the deep questioning and just tell a girl you have ass-loads of money, that’s all they’re usually looking for anyway. The crowd had thinned a bit and Sarah and I decided to leave the Match.com gathering, finish our wine and head out, ending our very short, but pleasant evening of avoiding advances and damaging male confidence and hopes for potential mating. My job was done for the night. I love sunsets. The end. APRIL 2011

Smile for Camera’s Takeovr (Tuesday nights at Roxy) has brought a much-needed new light to Orlando, quickly growing to become the city’s No. 1 Club night. A club that usually caters to fist-pumping was turned into something hip and awesome in less than a year. Cliff T, Joey Paranoia and Winston Wolfe, three unassuming DJs who seemed to have come out of nowhere, are at the heart of it all. Read on, as MELKAT pries into all of the deep dark secrets they have been keeping from us. APRIL 2011

MELKAT: You guys have known each other for a long time now, how exactly did you meet? Joey Paranoia: From what I recall we met in the 9th grade while hanging out in the hallways before class with all the punk skaters. We had a lot of the same mutual friends, so we would party together and get into way too much trouble to speak of. A couple years went by and we eventually saw each other at a Rave where we exchanged info and started hanging out all the time. Winston Wolfe: This was the late ‘90s in Florida, the raves were fucking legit and these were the kind that got raves killed here basically. Eventually, we also started a party with a few of our friends called Funk Punch at the now-defunct Alpha Bar around ’02. That ran like six months or so, then the bar closed or something. MELKAT: Cliff, you have been DJing for years, something that we recently discovered during talks with Juan Basshead. (You were the headliner at his first party back in 2001?!) How are things different now than they were ten years ago?

Cliff T: Evolution! On the DJing side, DJs were only playing vinyl records back then. Technology caught up, Mp3s and CDJs became the standard over last fi ve to six years, and of course now all the different DJ software programs. On the club/scene side, it too has changed, as it should. At the end of the day, to me, people will always want to dance, party and be social. What mostly changes is the music and attitudes. MELKAT: What’s it like to play alongside *THE* Cliff Tangredi aka Cliff T? WW: Cliff T is the fucking man. That’s really all that needs to be said. He sold me my first vinyl from Vinyl Frontier when he worked there! He seriously constantly amazes me every week with his selection, direction and mixing. He’s a human history of the scene and the epitome of the evolving DJ. MELKAT: And Cliff, your thoughts on Joey and Winston?
CT: I love these guys! I think we have all developed in our own way, yet we all know how to play off each other. Bouncing around in the booth with them is the best. Joey and I like to rave glow sticks to each other. MELKAT: How has your residency at Takeovr shaped your opinion of what it takes to continuously pack a room during a weekly party? WW: I’ll say this, a weekly residency at a party like Takeovr has helped me personally push the envelope in terms of my own DJing. It’s all about playing music for other people, and there’s stuff that just works and stuff that doesn’t. Takeovr has been a sort of clearinghouse for all the newest, freshest low-low shit we can find. CT: Consistency and reading a crowd. Knowing where to go musically or where you think you can take them. Breaking new music while also giving them something familiar.
JP: It’s important to always have new tunes, play all genres, but it’s OK to bring back the classics when the time is right. We play to the crowd. Some nights it’s Electro/Dutch other nights it’s Dubstep. We just try to stay humble and keep an open mind. MELKAT: What do you think makes them want to keep coming out to Takeovr every week? CT: I’d like to think its cause we’re SEXY? Honestly, kids wanna party, and we try our best to bring it every week. You know it’s been a good night when everyone is dancing their asses off and leaves in a big sweaty mess. WW: The promoter, Smile for Camera, has really developed this party right. You got everything in there: Great lights, big sound, space, decent DJs, hookahs, insane drink specials, proper promotion and a crew committed to bringing
balloons, beach balls, rafts, tacos, lasers, dry ice, glow sticks and anything else that can surprise and delight the drunk people of Orlando. JP: It’s definitely the whole experience. The crowd is a wide variety of kids from indie, punk, rave and hip hop cultures, which allows the party to work well with all types of dance music. Add to that, Smile for Camera does a really swell job of bringing the best headliners from around the globe covering all the different scenes in dance music. MELKAT: So, what’s in your record bag? What do you use to perform? WW: For all the haters out there: We started on vinyl in the 90s, played in clubs with that, moved on to CDs in the early 2ks and played in clubs with those. Then went to Ableton around ‘05 and haven’t looked back. Keep your horse-and-buggy; we’ll take our racecar, thanks. MELKAT: In your opinion, what sets Orlando apart from other cities as far as nightlife and party culture? WW: What sets it apart is the fact that it shouldn’t be but IS. If Disney World hadn’t been built here in the 70s it’d resemble Lakeland to this day, no offense to Lakeland. Instead, we have a massive tourist influx and a massive workforce to support it. That’s what sparked the original central Florida scene, the one that got Firestone voted No. 1 club in America by Rolling Stone magazine back in the day. It was the wild west of the rave days back then, and literally all-ages were allowed to these all-night parties.
CT: The Orlando scene is always growing. It’s a huge college town now. So you get many different people coming in from all over, and you get this cool mixture that you might not see other places. More of melting pot than it was 10 years ago. The vibe is really amazing, especially at Takeovr. JP: And, Orlando is the weirdest place on earth for dance music. Whatever typically works in other cities just flat out fails here, and the long shots seem to win. Takeovr is a perfect example; it’s on a Tuesday at a usual Top 40 venue that doesn’t cater to EDM. But by some miracle it works really well. MELKAT: What are some Takeovr horror stories? Any secrets? JP: Horror stories? Hmm. Well there are so many, but I’ve seen everything from laptops getting swallowed by the crowd, jealous boyfriends trying to attack us because their girlfriends are on stage, sex, group sex, balloon animals, crooked cops, marriage proposals and blood on the dance fl oor. MELKAT: What makes you “Smile”? CT: My girlfriend. Aww! JP: Cat purring, music documentaries, Thai food, medical marijuana, seeing old friends, making new ones. WW: Ass and titties.

Nerd Date Your pickup line for this socially awkward love affair is: “I am the keymaster!” If they respond with “I am the gatekeeper!” you may continue. Head out to The Orlando Science Center, preferably for the next Cocktails and Cosmos event (or the Curious George exhibit, which ought to stir up some fond memories). Next, attend one of the discussion sessions at the new Urban ReThink, where a topic about something you’re familiar with (politics, pop culture, sewing – it hardly matters since you’re nerds) is mixed with the booze from the on-location Virgin Olive Market, allowing you and your date to out-nerd one another in a public setting. End the night at the BYOB Geek Easy in A Comic Shop. Video game consoles, TVs screening obscure anime flicks and (of course) library-style comic book reading spaces. If that doesn’t ignite your nerdy loins, ain’t nothing will. *Visit any of the above-mentioned business’ websites for more info. I trust your Googling abilities.

Earth Date If you’re a fan of the planet Earth (and its day, April 22), you’re probably also a fan of, oh, let’s call it “frugality” (aka, cheapskateness). To start this three-way between you, your sweetie and that hot MILF Mother Nature, pack a knapsack of sandwiches and wine, grab the Orlando Significant Trees Map from CityOfOrlando. net and bike your way around, marveling at the old-ass trees. If you do this on April 23, you can also stop off at the Central Florida Earth Day celebration at Lake Eola and enjoy live music, vegan cooking and all the patchouli you can handle (this is why you bring your own wine).
DATE Retro Date
NIGH
Dating karma points to you if you and your date wear appropriate (read: polyester) duds for this one. Start your evening by doing some shopping on Antique Row, where you can pick up some killer vinyl at Rock ‘n Roll Heaven and grab a quick drink among the unique import furniture at The Imperial at Washburn Imports. Next, head to one of Orlando’s last remaining independent bowling alleys, Colonial Lanes, where the bowling balls are likely older than you. Your last stop is the retro-riffic Red Fox Lounge, where you’ll get swept up by the crooning of local lounge act fixtures Mark and Lorna, and find yourself adrift in the 70s vibe and cheap drinks.

NIGHT Hate Date If you find that this year’s spring cleaning also involves sweeping that disgusting love-dust bunny into the bin, try this recession-approved adventure. Flash your expired student ID to the guard at Costco, and dinner for two is an all-you-can-eat buffet of free samples (with luck they may have a movie playing in the electronics section for your dining entertainment). For after-dinner drinks (what we in the biz call “sealing the deal”), haul your date from one Publix location to another, trolling for the wine tastings until you either hit the jackpot or you’re frustratingly sober from all the running around. Finally, hop the Lynx (it is a Lymmo, after all) back to the hottest club in town – your parents’ house – and spend the night dancing to the radio.

cool Here at Drink we’re dedicated to telling you what’s cool and what’s not because you’re just not cool enough to know any of this yourself.
Cork Brigade C COOL Do you love arts and crafts but hate how they take up your precious, precious time? Well, bring your used wine corks (synthetic or natural) to any ABC Fine Wine & Spirits, and they’ll hand them off to TerraCycle, which then uses the little stoppers to create consumer products to sell (our money’s on a lot of “unique” bulletin boards). They say they do this to keep the corks out of landfills (huge problem, no doubt), but the real good deed that comes from this effort is that ABC donates 2 cents for every cork to UCP of Central Florida, which cares for special-needs kids. Aw. Drink up, good samaritan!
The Bad Film Appreciation Society RFC REALLY FUCKING COOL The name says it all, but it can also be misleading. These are not cult films, nor schlock-house productions, or even Nicolas Cage clunkers – they’re just straight-up shitty movies that someone devoted a lot of time and passion to ... with predictably shitty results. Once a month at Urban ReThink, the movies are given attention they would never otherwise receive (which is to say they wouldn’t receive any if it weren’t for this event), thoughtfully dissected by the screeners and audience alike. The screenings are free, meaning any old lunatic (like you!) can just waltz in and snark out all night long. URBAN RETHINK, APRIL 10, MAY 8, BADFILMAPPRECIATIONSOCIETY.COM
