S

o it’s almost Valentines Day and you’re single. Or, if you’re getting this late, Valentine’s Day recently passed, but not before it could remind you that you have once again spent another long, pathetic year alone. What the hell is going on? Didn’t dating used to be easier than this? Where do you go to meet someone now? How will you find THEE one? Well, allow me to give you some half-assed help. The classy folks who look for their significant others in bars and clubs usually have a certain type of relationship in mind. Are you a young lady looking for a wienership? This is a relationship you can achieve simply by letting a man push his wienie against your butt while you’re trying to dance with your friends on the dance floor. Some may find that when they turn around ... the wiener pusher is cute. Let the random, sweaty dance floor makeout session begin! If a wienership sounds like your cup of STD, try an indie/electro night. Or maybe you want a popularship. I mean, isn’t it so much cooler when your significant other is SOMEONE? Like, maybe a bartender at your favorite bar? Or better yet: THE DJ! How do you win such a prize, you ask? It’s easy – be attractive, somewhat interesting and befriend someone the target of your affection knows so it seems like you’re in the inner circle. Yes, being popular is cool. And

6

February 2011

being cool in Orlando means ... well, nothing at all, but who cares? You’re with the club promoter! Not interested in a wienership or a popularship? Think you might want a little more than that? Maybe you want someone who is cute, cool and intelligent. Oops, just kidding – what I meant was, maybe you want someone who is hot or has money. A shallowship is probably for you, then. Try any night that spins top 40 music. Top 40 is awful, and any guy stupid enough to dance to it (especially with that little cha-cha fist thing) while ordering a $300 bottle of liquor to the table probably doesn’t have much going on. We l l, other than a hefty wallet. Obviously, any girl drinking from this shitty bottle of vodka is a good candidate for a shallowship as well. Let’s pause here. Have I helped you at all yet? Probably not. You know why? Because meeting someone in a bar these days is pointless. Thanks to websites like Myspace and Facebook, your competition has nearly quadrupled over the past few years, and nobody needs bars to meet people anymore. But even though it’s much easier to meet people now, meeting more people means more choices. And more choices means it’s harder to settle on just one. Gone are the days when we’d just grab the first cute potential

SINGLE AND ETERNALLY LOOKING? by Meghan Schalk

that comes around, because the number of potentials seems limitless these days.

night, grab what you can and hold onto it, because it’s not so easy for you.)

It’s become a “grass is always greener” world when it comes to dating. Even if you are cute or cool or rich, there are 5,489,194 other cute, cool and rich people out there vying for your someone’s attention. And since it’s so much easier for us to find one another now, it’s much easier to just keep looking. So there’s no telling whether we’ll ever be able to just settle for what we’ve got and stop looking for something (someone) better. (BTW, I’m talking about semi-attractive to good-looking people, here. You fuglies need to hit the bars every

The scary thing? When you do finally settle for someone, who’s to say that you’re their final choice? You could be tossed aside and upgraded, again and again. And look at you, you’re just getting older and older. You can tell yourself that the single life is great, but it’s a fleeting feeling, and you know it. Eventually you’re going to get lonely. Very, very lonely. And you’ll be old. And gross. Fucking gross. And then what? Beats me. Happy Valentine’s Day!

DATE N GHT A

Valentine’s Day date is an inquisition, more so than any other date you will ever have. Your choice of lovey dovey events is eyed with the scrutiny of an Olympic judge (and one of those extrastrict Eastern Bloc countries, to boot). One wrong move and it’s to the curb, baby.

By Paul Hiebing

Dinner and a movie? You’re history. Melting Pot? Oh, how original. Dinner at home? You wuss. Look, we like you as a couple, so here are some helpful suggestions to get you out of the house, and hopefully into each other’s pants on Feb. 14.

Presumptuous Date NUDE NIGHT

NUDE NIGHT 6 PM - 12 AM • FEB. 10 - 12 503 W. GRANT ST. (DOWNTOWN WAREHOUSE BEHIND SODO)

This annual juried exhibition of naked people (or, more freakily, just their disembodied naughty bits) is widely exploited by horny folks as a means to woo their prey by saying “Yes, we’re going to ogle nekkid folks, but it’s art!” As if anyone is fooled by that anymore. But with live models, body painting and (more critically) a cash bar, anything can happen, Cassanova.

$20

Bestiality Date

SEX AND THE ZOO

The Central Florida Zoo knows you don’t care about the Call of the Wild - you just watch nature shows for the animal-boinkin’. So they’re cutting out the middle man and giving you and your date the horniest educational dinner money can buy. Your evening includes appetizers, two drink tickets, dinner, a couple funbags from Fairvilla Megastore and a lesson in how animals get it on (spoiler: it’s rapier than you’d think!).

DATE N GHT

find-a-date

ANTI-VALENTINE’S DAY Just because you’re single doesn’t mean you’re totally against the idea of romance, but you can pretend as much at Orlando Tastings’ Anti-Valentine’s Day Party. They’ll provide broken paper hearts, lovelorn singles, a tasty menu of pair-worthy appetizers and 72 different wines. When combined liberally this is a formula for commercial-grade Valentine’s hatefucking.

ANTI-VALENTINE’S DAY 4 PM • FEB. 14 ORLANDO TASTINGS, FREE

Cheap Skate Date Pulling off a successful cheap date is a delicate balancing act. You don’t want to spend more than a 12-pack of PBR, but you can’t let them know. As for dinner, you’re on your own, but we’ve got your back for the movie: An Officer and a Gentleman,

that Richard Gere-iffic reel of steamy R-rated romance, projected against the natural splendor of the (BYOwine-friendly) Harry P. Leu Gardens. No, no, don’t thank us. Just don’t be a jackass and make sandwiches for your romantic meal.

Hate Date

LOVE HURTS SO GOOD If you’re looking to shake loose that romance remora sucking the will to live from your chest, try this gauntlet of endurance. Their night’s meal is the suicide wing challenge at Copper Rocket, consisting of a beer and six wings slathered in sauce derived from a soul-melting triple-pepper paste. If they make it through (woo, free beer!), head over to the new Stigma Tattoo Bar in downtown Orlando, where your date can shake his or her molten belly around the pole-dancing stage while you pump them full of tequila shots and goad them into getting a full-back tattoo. If your date survives and considers it a good Valentine’s, well, this one just might be a keeper.

GIRL

ASK A DERBY

We’ve heard from bartenders, DJs and other fixtures in the Orlando scene. This time we ask Orlando’s toughest broads, the women of the Orlando Psycho City Derby Girls, to tell us what they like. Find out what their favorite moves are on the track, and where they like to make moves when they’re off it!

20

February 2011

Name: Anita Priest, #666 Team: Serial Thrillers 1. Favorite drink? Always Captain and Coke 2. Favorite move on the track? Juking. It’s where you fake someone out by acting like you’re going one way and then going another 3. Favorite position and why? Jammer, because I’m fast as hell. 4. What bar would be a great place to have a derby after party? Will’s Pub. I don’t know why we’ve never had one there. It’s a down-to-earth place, you can listen to the music you wanna hear and they have great beer. 5. Worst reaction when someone hears you play derby? “Is it like Whip It?” 6. Best reason to party with a derby girl? Why not? I mean why the hell wouldn’t you want to?

Name: no quarter, #423 Team: Serial Thrillers 1. Favorite drink? White Russian 2. Favorite position and why? Power blocker. It’s the most versatile, and you get to move all over the place. 3. What bar would be a great place to have a derby after party? Matador – they have a good flow, good vibe and good people. 4. Worst reaction when someone hears you play derby? “So you must really like to hit people?” 5. Best reason to party with a derby girl? Because she’s wearing fishnets!

Name: bonez, #206 Team: Serial Thrillers 1. Favorite drink? Presidente 2. Favorite move on the track? Hip checks. If done properly, the girl hit is out on the floor for a good amount of time. 3. Favorite position and why? Jammer, because it’s exhilarating. 4. What bar would be a great place to have a derby after party? Bar BQ Bar. A lot of people show up there and it’s good for promoting the league. 5. Worst reaction when someone hears you play derby? “Oh, so that means you’re a tough girl?” 6. Best reason to party with a derby girl? Because they don’t take shit from anyone.

ASK A DERBY GIRL Name: Slayor Moon, #67 Team: Serial Thrillers 1. Favorite drink? I’m a beer girl. My current favorite is Apricot Wheat Ale by Seadog. If money isn’t a factor I’m a Glenlivet on the rocks girl, too. 2. Favorite move on the track? All of my moves are special, but my favorite is the tomahawk. It’s when you turn around while you’re skating and stop on your toe stops backwards. I use it in games a lot. It looks pretty badass! 3. Favorite position and why? Main Blocker, aka Shark. I stay on the opposing jammer ... like white on rice. 4. What bar would be a great place to have a derby after party? Any bar is fun during a derby after party! 5. Worst reaction when someone hears you play derby? I actually don’t get enough of a reaction. Not enough people in the Orlando area truly know the awesomeness that is Women’s Roller Derby, but I intend to keep changing that! 6. Best reason to party with a derby girl? Anything you can do, we can do better ... on wheels!

Name: Betty Miles Team: Pending-New Recruit 1. Favorite drink? Chilled Patron Silver, but I don’t stop there! 2. Favorite move on the track? The Whip – the communication between two team members working toward the ultimate goal: to get ahead. 3. Favorite position and why? Pivot, because you get to set the pace, you have to be aware of everything at the same time, and you get to assist your teammates or block the opposition. It’s on you to take the lead if your jammer can’t break through. It’s all about teamwork. 4. What bar would be a great place to have a derby after party? Lou’s Lounge, because, like Wally’s, it’s one of the oldest dives, they are generous with their drinks, affordable with their prices, and for a quarter you can get warm pistachios! 5. Worst reaction when someone hears you play derby? The nervous chuckle ... and then, “Seriously? Really?” 6. Best reason to party with a derby girl? You can’t sum it up with one, but you can Cliff’s Notes the reasons ... bad-ass girls on skates. We have great senses of humor. Open minded. And a shot will buy you any kind of a friend. Betty Miles has just completed recruitment. The next recruitment for OPCDG will be February 17 at Universal Skate Center and will be open to women as well as men skaters. H

ere at Drink we’re dedicated to telling you what’s cool and what’s not because you’re just not cool enough to know any of this yourself. Let the following kitten heads show you the way to Orlando coolness:

LAME

COOL

REALLY FUCKING COOL

FAIRVILLA’S GALLERY LUXURIA Last month, adult emporium Fairvilla Megastore opened Gallery Luxuria, an upscale adult-toy shop (think sex toys designed by Ikea rather than cheap plastic molds of Dirk Digler’s junk), at its Orlando location. The Gallery is home to a $10,000 gold-plated dildo. Which means one of two things: Either the economy is turning around, or men really will spend themselves broke in hope of getting laid – and believe that wagging a 10k gold-plated stunt cock at a woman is the way to do it. Which, sadly for some, probably really is the way to do it. We won’t judge. By the way, is it just us, or does anyone else think it’s a bad idea to keep a $10,000 dildo inside a porn shop located on OBT? Fairvilla, 1740 N. Orange Blossom Trail, free 26

ADULT CHOCOLATE MILK It’s not quite local at the moment (but it’s only a four-hour drive up to Georgia to get some), but it’s the next big thing your friends’ kids are going to be shoplifting. Invented by some mom in California who doesn’t like the taste of regular booze (grow up, lady), Adult Chocolate Milk is the latest rage to hit the Twitters. At 40 proof, it’s even more alcoholic than FourLoko, and the target demographic of the base ingredient makes being a child predator that much easier. Ugh.

DECHOES WINE NOT WEDNESDAY Who doesn’t love a good resale shop? Sure, the pleasure is mostly derived from the glee of getting expensive clothes frivolous rich kids toss away, but that’s OK. Drink to your victory over their wasteful ways, and get a little sloshed while trying on designer jackets and heels. I mean, Dechoes Wine Not Wednesdays is free, after all (ah, the upside to the lack of a liquor license), and it’s not like you’d buy anything foolish while drunk, right?

MR. SISTER’S A few years ago, Orlando was suffering a slow, gay death. All the best gay bars were closing up shop, leaving behind sad, windswept dance floors and empty blinking-light stages with nary a go-go boy to jiggle his junk upon them. But now there’s Mr. Sister’s, with a flashy-splashy nightclub, a huge patio dock that promises views of hunky stunt skiers on Lake Barton and a food menu modeled after the seven deadly sins.

MTV’S SKINS

A U.S version of a British hit show that focuses on teenage drug use, extreme partying, underage drinking and lots AND LOTS of sex. Is it wrong to like it? Kinda. Because it undoubtedly shows our youth that all we think they’re good for is getting illegally wasted and pre-maritally impregnated. Actually, that’s the entertaining part. What’s really wrong is that MTV decided to recreate something it should never have gotten its can’tuse-curse-words-or-show-nudity hands on in the first place. It’s eliminated the two things that made the original British version so bloody fantastic to watch. The good news? It’s a nostalgic reminder of Revolver in Miami, pre-UCF Steve Aoki, The Misshapes in NYC and the glory days in 2007 (the same year the original Skins debuted). The height of the young hip club kid indie/electro/dance party scene (the same scene that has kinda been recreated at Roxy’s Takovr every Tuesday night, just in case you’re curious.)

FEBRUARY EVENTS SECOND ANNUAL

BY PAUL HIEBING

BLACK HEARTS’ BALL 2011

DELAND CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL More than 100 beers from 36 different breweries are on display and ready to be slung down your gullet at this beer festival presented by Abbey, a wine and beer bar in Deland. No slouch when it comes to beer appreciation, Abbey is hosting break-out sessions with visiting brewery owners and a special IPA competition with amateur judges. Bonus: No Miller or Bud as far as the eye can see.

1 PM • FEB. 12 ARTISAN ALLEY, DELAND, $20

Valentine’s gets stretched out a couple of days so the goth kids at Independent Bar’s Necropolis night can fill their dour, dour hearts with romance, too. It’s a fancy night, so get dressed up (just a guess here, but the colors of choice are probably red and black) and get down with the industrial and EBM while enjoying $2 import bottles and $2 you-call-its until midnight.

10 PM • FEB. 16 INDEPENDENT BAR, $5

ORLANDO

LUV SUX AT HOWL AT THE MOON The I-Drive dueling piano bar invites you to flip the bird to love and treat your emotionally vulnerable throat to themed drink specials. Bring in a torn, mutilated or otherwise vandalized picture of your ex and you get half off the door fee, plus the chance to win $100 (this doesn’t mean you should bring in those private pics you swore you deleted, OK?). Games will be played all night, with cash and prizes to help you forget ol’ whats-his-name.

8 PM • FEB. 12 HOWL AT THE MOON, $10

CHILI COOK-OFF Chili competitions are inherentlyy fun because they incorporate e the two things people love e most: eating, and making snap p judgments. Blue Jacket Parkk in Baldwin Park is hosting this second annual competition, which will feature lots of chili sampling (obviously), plus booze swilling and music playing by some established local acts like Thomas Wynn and the Believers and Plain Jane Automobile. And you can even feel good about attending, because the proceeds benefit the Special Olympics.

11 AM • FEB. 26, BLUE JACKET PARK, $7 WWW.ORLANDOCHILICOOKOFF.COM

SPEAKEASY: THE NOOKIE EDITION The monthly spoken word night at Will’s has swiped Cupid’s bag o’ arrows and is aiming for your Valentine’s afterglow. Local poets, writers and professional drunks will all get on stage to read their steamiest, filthiest and kinkiest pieces for your titillation, and there’s always

32

February 2011

the chance that someone will stumble on stage and rant about the collapse of modern civilization (points if it’s you and you make it sexy).

9 PM • FEB. 15 WILL’S PUB, FREE

6 PM: THE PRE-MEAL COCKTAIL

The Negroni

Barolo Chinato

The Negroni is a classic cocktail that dates back to 1900s Italy. It’s first on this list because traditionally it was served as a pre-dinner aperitif to help stimulate the appetite. Think of it as a way to get your girl to put down the cosmo and pick up a much more respectable red-hued drink.

After a delicious homemade meal, you’re ready for dessert. No doubt the lovers will be overdosing on chocolate this month; however, some overdoses will take place in cold, lonely apartments in complete isolation. Regardless, there should still be time to make a quick drink in between the sobs/ kisses.

February is Valentine’s month and what better way to say “I love you” than with hard liquor? Since bars aren’t exactly romantic, we thought we’d provide you with some (loosely) themed Valentine’s libations and hold your hand through the evening. So, grab some ice, your fancy drink glasses, a significant other and read on.

8 PM: DESSERT

1 oz Gin 1 oz Sweet Vermouth 1 oz Campari Glass: Cocktail (martini) Garnish: Orange twist DIRECTIONS :

Fill a shaker or cocktail glass halfway with ice. Add spirits, stir vigorously (for about 30 seconds or until condensation forms), strain into a classic cocktail or martini glass. Garnish with an Orange Peel twist.

February 2011

Barolo Chinato is an Italian aperitif (a drink that stimulates the appetite). It’s made from the Barolo wine grape and quinine bark. This is the ultimate dessert drink – better than port, better than scotch – and it happens to pair exquisitely with dark chocolate. INGREDIENTS :

Barolo Chinato Glass: Wine Garnish: Dark chocolate DIRECTIONS :

Break off a chunk of dark chocolate, pour a glass of Barolo Chinato and prepare for nirvana.

10 PM: AFTER DINNER

12 AM: LATE NIGHT

9 AM: THE MORNING AFTER

Juliet & Romeo

Restraining Corpse Order Reviver #2

The dinner was a success, you’ve gorged on chocolate and now it’s time to relax, watch a romcom and get cozy. Nothing quite says romance like love-induced suicide. This one is a bit complicated but worth the effort. It was ranked the third best cocktail in America by GQ. The nice thing is that it’s sweet and floral enough for the ladies but boozy and complex enough for a more masculine palate.

It’s getting late, shit is bound to get weird and let’s face it, a few of you are going to be implementing or receiving a restraining order. Why not celebrate with tequila?

INGREDIENTS :

2 oz Gin 3/4 oz Fresh Lime Juice 3/4 oz Simple Syrup 3 drops Rose Water 3 drops Angostura 3 slices Cucumber 3 sprigs Mint Tiny pinch of salt Glass: Coupe/Martini Garnish: Mint leaf and 1 drop rose water/3 drops of Bitters.

INGREDIENTS :

1 1/2 oz Reposado Tequila 3/4 oz Aperol 3-4 dashes Celery Bitters Glass: Old fashioned Garnish: Orange twist DIRECTIONS :

Fill a mixing glass or large shaker half way with ice, and add tequila, aperol and bitters. Stir vigorously for 30 seconds, then strain into an old fashioned glass with two large ice cubes. Twist the orange peel over the glass to release its oils, and rub it along the rim the glass. Finally, place the twisted peel in the cocktail.

Muddle cucumber, mint and pinch of salt. Add the rest of the ingredients and let sit for 30 seconds. Add ice, shake, strain. Garnish with one floating mint leaf, one drop rose water on top of leaf and three more drops of bitters on the surface of the drink.

INGREDIENTS :

3/4 oz Gin 3/4 oz Cocchi (or Lillet Blanc) 3/4 oz Cointreau 3/4 oz Lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon absinthe Glass: Coupe/Martini Garnish: Preserved Cherry DIRECTIONS :

Recipe adapted from Colin Shearn, of DIRECTIONS :

This is the morning after drink. Before I go any further, get your heads out of the gutter. By “morning after” I mean hangover treatment/energy shot. The corpse reviver drink is a staple of the early 20th century. It went by all sorts of names (eye-openers, mustache-twisters, fog cutters) and was used in the morning to “wake the corpse” after a night of drinking. Suggested to “be taken before 11 am, or whenever steam and energy are needed” by the Savoy Cocktail Book.

Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co., Philadelphia.

Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add the gin, Cocchi, cointreau, lemon juice and absinthe. Shake well, then strain into a chilled cocktail (martini) glass. Garnish with the cherry. Recipe adapted from the Savoy Cocktail Book

Recipe adapted from Tobey Malone, of the Violet Hour, Chicago.
