I

t’s 9 p.m. on a Friday and I am still waiting to hear back from my contact regarding entrance to Orlando’s annual Nude Night over on Antique Row. Twenty dollars gets you into a 14,000-squarefoot warehouse event that I noticed has been described several times as an “artistic celebration of the human body.” In other words, you’re probably going to see a large number of dumpy people body-painted in the name of art. I

understand that we come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and that bodies, or art for that matter, are subjective and beautiful in many ways, but this isn’t a party being held at the Playboy mansion. The more I think about it, and the more minutes pass by, the more I

go from angry that my calls and e-mails were completely ignored to thankful that I might be missing out on something that could potentially harm my vision as well as my sex life for the next 10 years. I decide I need to have a naked-filled night regardless. Not to toot my own magazine’s horn, but we happen to have amazing ads that double as coupons to strip clubs within these pages. With a huge list of venues to choose from, they offer everything from free entrance to free drinks. I easily round up a group of friends and grab my Drink stash in order to take full advantage of the fruits – or shall I say “melons” – of Orlando. What else do we have around here other than bars to entertain us? I’ve given up on depending on this city for its culture alone as I have direct examples of how terribly we lack in this department, the most obvious one being the time I was driving down I-4 and noticed a large brown sign on the right hand side titled “cultural attractions”. Underneath the title, the sign was blank. Then there was the time I tried to see La Bohème last year at the Orlando Opera only to find out the Orlando Opera had actually closed its doors due to low ticket sales. Or when the little movie theater downtown that played the foreign films shut down and when Stardust went from being an independent movie rental store to a giant cafeteria with wifi. So with that said, I am trying to learn to appreciate what Orlando has left to offer. I’m grabbing some friends and heading to the titty bar. Now, I’ve had my fair share of delicious barbecue at Dancer’s Royale, but this evening I think I am ready for something less “safe” and off the beaten path. I want the true grit of an OBT strip joint. I want to know that at any given moment I can have my legs shot off while

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 walking into the club. Heading to our first destination with Yeago, Kara and Britney, I can’t help but get excited as I check for my mace and search through my wallet making sure I have the appropriate funds for our outing. The same way gas prices rose, I’m unsure if the cost of strippers has as well and I ask the group, “Do they take ones?,” for a moment forgetting that these are humans, not slot machines. We arrive at Cabaret Internationale and the second we get inside, the three of us, minus Yeago our male escort for the evening, are immediately asked if we would like to fill out applications. Ignoring the flattering offer, we are then led to a few other friends we were meeting up with. This is when the staff begins to act completely strange, or maybe strip club normal for all I know. They pull out chairs for us, but make no eye contact with any of the ladies in our party. I raise my eyebrow as I notice that the manager keeps continuously checking on Yeago however, asking what he needs, bringing free drinks to the table and giving him the thumbs up every time he leaves. A part of me is slightly offended, another part amused, and another part can’t help but secretly want to be an undercover stripper for the evening so I can see why the hell they are acting so fucking odd. Do they really recruit girls this way? Do they think Yeago is our pimp? I realize I need to stop thinking about it so much as it is distracting me from the plethora of boobies in the room with us. Talk about different shapes and sizes, these clubs know the definition of variety. No man could possibly ever leave disappointed. Sure there is the occasional butter face, but whose looking at their faces anyway?

6

My thoughts are again broken when the DJ tells the audience to give it up for the dancers as well as the beautiful women in the audience, and Britney is asked up to the stage to hold the strippers hands and help them down the stairs for free T-shirt + lap dance time. Circling the floor with balloons in hand, one finds her way to Yeago only to be sadly dismissed by him. Feeling guilty that none of us can really afford a lap dance anyway (or would rather not pay for one), we decide to head out before they determine that we are not the successful group of prostitutes they had pegged us to be. Because Orlando has high morals and closes its doors at 2 a.m., there now is only enough time to head directly across the street to Thee Original Dollhouse for the last 30 minutes of naked time. With alcohol finally running through our blood streams, we are relaxed and better able to enjoy our surroundings without the feeling that Yeago, at any given moment, is going to complete a human trading transaction involving one of us and the club. We stay for last call, big smiles on our faces and promises that we will make this journey again. It may not be the classiest thing to do, but stepping out of your box every once in a while helps escape the dullness of this tired town. Besides, if you are not a twentysomething who finds it cool and ironic to confess their love for Disney World, into swimming in your child’s pee at our numerous water parks or obsessed with Jesus and the Holy Land, you really don’t have much else, attraction wise. And if you’re looking for culture, as some of us do every so often in Orlando, skip the shitty excuse for an art festival/craft fair on Lake Eola, steal a few Drink magazines, tear out the coupons and head over to the closest nudie bar. After all, what could be a finer art than the naked female body? meghan@drinkorlando.com

S

t. Patrick’s Day may be the only truly honest holiday. Although it has roots in the misty history of Ireland and remains an official holiday of the Roman Catholic Church, the true meaning of the feast day has evolved (some will argue devolved) into a universal holiday of drinking and merrymaking. Debauchery, drunkenness, slovenly behavior and emerald-hued crimes against the fashion gods have all become “just part of the charm.” Not only are these activities encouraged, nay required, on St. Patrick’s day, they are the only thing people remember (depending upon the number of beverages) about this truly Irish day of celebration. But St. Patrick’s Day the only honest holiday? How dare I? Before you arrange for my excommunication, prepare the gibbet for a hanging or arrange a nice pile of wood for a soul-cleansing stake barbeque, give this heathen a chance to explain. While the United States has 10 federal holidays (St. Patrick’s Day is sadly not one of them), the world has literally thousands of days of celebration. And some of them honor the truly bizarre: Japan’s Kanamara Matsuri celebrates the joys of the penis every spring. Sept. 19 is Talk Like a Pirate Day, and in some places Feb. 1 is Working Naked Day. Therefore it must be the height of arrogance to suggest that St. Patrick’s Day tops the chart for holidays that are what they pretend to be. But I suggest an honest assessment will shine a light on the self-evident truth of my statement. Christmas has morphed into a retailer’s dream, so much so that many kids recognize Santa more than Jesus. President’s Day Weekend has become the most beloved three days of the year for automobile pimps of all kinds, from mega-mall car retailers to Johnny’s

8

by C hris Car ney Craptacular Car Depot. Even New Year’s Eve, a study in amateur depravity, remains burdened with unlikely, and mostly unfulfilled, resolutions to improve oneself in the coming year. Yet a quick Internet search for the “True Meaning of St. Patrick’s Day” uncovers several bizarre parables involving a bearded RomanoBritish monk by the name of Patricius who lived sometime in the 5th century AD (or CE for you egalitarian sticklers), killed a bunch of snakes and, oh yeah, brought Christianity to the heathen Fey Folk worshippers of Ireland. Even the shamrock, a symbol not only of St. Patrick’s Day, The Boston Celtics and House of Pain but of the very essence of Irishness, was empowered by St. Patrick who used its three leaves to teach the locals about the Holy Trinity. While little remains today of the religious holiday – even the Republic of Ireland officially endorsed the party by the 1990s – the secular version of St. Patrick’s Day has done something few religions, political parties or pseudo scientific, new-age movements have: it has become all-inclusive. Everyone can join. Everyone is welcome. Whether they’re Irish, Inuit, Samoan, Russian, Jewish or Somali, St. Patrick’s Day welcomes all, with just one caveat: “Enjoy Yourself.” As the saying goes, “Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day.” Sadly, we Central Floridians have no river to dye green like our Irish brethren in chilly Chicago, cannot lay claim to 400,000 revelers

like the folks in Savannah, and have no parade older than our beloved country like the Celtic-loving Bostonians in which to march. Yet, despite our Gaelic handicap, there are plenty of places in Orlando to kick up your boots, swig a pint of Guinness and dance a jig with you best lass. Here are the places you’re likely to find me: I find I have a hankering to see old dudes in fezzes drive wee cars, so I shoot up the few miles to Winter Park for their annual St. Patty’s Day parade. Since the sad demise of Orlando’s own parade, this jaunty and joyous, if small, parade is the only one we have. After a brief lunch of Shepherd’s Pie at Fiddler’s Green I head downtown. A short jaunt from my front door and I’m sitting across from the lovely, and authentically Irish, lassies at Lizzy McCormack’s. These off-the-boat imports, wondrous redheads all, welcome me with the clarion call of Irish hospitality: “What can

I get ya’ darlin’?” A minute later a Smithwick’s mustache crests my upper lip and I am satisfied. From there I hit The Harp & Celt on Magnolia for a pint before heading to my newest fav, The Lucky Leprechaun located in the tourist hell of I-Drive. From here on out the night may get fuzzy, but at least it will match my green felt Mad Hatter chapeau. So this March 17th grab your favorite green apparel, whether it be green plastic Bowler hat, fuzzy chaps or shamrock plastered thongs (St. Patrick would likely disapprove) and jaunt down to any number of local watering holes that for at least one day are Irish too. Drink, make merry and celebrate a holiday that exists for celebration. Erin go bragh! drink@orlandoweekly.com
