rlando is what I like to call a big small town. It is big enough to allow you to continuously meet new people, but small enough to still know everyone’s name. When it comes to the night life and those who frequent it, it’s pretty safe to say that everyone knows a bartender, bar owner, b o u n c e r , DJ, promoter, etc. to a certain degree and at some point in their life has used this “friend,” or friend’s name, for a complimentar y ticket, entrance or drink when out for the night. There are ways to get in free to clubs, either using a promotional flier or guest lists, and drink cards and coupons, or just a good bar with the perfect drink special, can help you score free drinks all night. To put it
bluntly, you can be broke as fuck and still go out in this city. Yes, Orlando can be done on a budget, but that’s not to say that “free” necessarily means going out without your purse or wallet. If you want your favorite bar’s lights kept on, or your favorite bartender to be able to feed himself, you seriously have to drop a couple of bucks every now and then. Here are three cases where you’re really not God’s gift to the night life and should probably spare some change, for the good of your greater drinking future. 1. Your friend’s the bartender and your drinks are often free: Ah yes, isn’t it great to know people? You’ve made the circuit, been drinking at these bars for years. You just had a few drinks, but you know he won’t ask you to pay for it. You ask
what you owe, he says don’t worry about it, you smile, say thank you and head out on your way. Nice job you freeloading asshole. They may be waving goodbye-come-again to you, but inside they just visualized peeing on your face. Leave a damn tip. There are rare exceptions and times when tips are denied depending on how awesome you are, but chances are you’re not one of those people and should still, if anything, offer. Anyone who thinks their smile and friendship is enough to merit them free alcohol is completely delusional. Allow me to remind you of the fact that the bartender pays for those drinks. The drinks are not getting poured from magical, unicorn-adorned

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 fountains of free vodka or whisky in the back. Also, if you leave a generous tip, you may see hook-ups more often. 2. You know someone who works at the bar and expect to always be on a guestlist: This is your moment. You’re headed to your favorite club night with friends, you’re finally up to the front door, you recognize the door girl even though she has no clue who you are and you utter the words, “I know (enter bar owner/bartender/club promoter/DJ’s name here).” Or maybe you’ve been around the block so many times that you’ve banged the DJ, blew the promoter and made out with two of the bartenders. You’re definitely on the list. Hey, congratulations on being a whore. Now pay the $5 to get in. If you think you are the only person in line who screws DJ iTunes or was done by the bar owner, you’re mildly retarded. The door girl is blankly staring at you because she has now heard the same thing 87 times. To be honest, Orlando is too spoiled with guest lists and every one seems to think that they should never ever have to pay to get in somewhere. A guest list usually closes at a certain time in the night so that the bar can make money and sustain an existence. If you can’t afford a big $3-$8 cover after a guest list closes, or even just in general, will you even be able to pay for anything once you get inside or are you just going to sip on the free PBR all night? Unless someone hosting the night asks for you to be there, don’t think that anyone actually cares whether you show up or not. 3. You never pay for anything, anywhere. You’re seriously that cool. You’re a local radio DJ, you were in a ‘90s boy
6
band, or you’ve just been hitting the club scene for so long that everyone knows your name. Oh! Good for you. You’re a celebrity in a town that no one gives a shit about. If you think everyone in the whole city knows who you are just by staring at the years of club wear and tear on your face, then once again you’re not very bright. And in case anyone has picked up on the fact that I have now called people stupid and retarded in a matter of two paragraphs, let’s just assume you are all borderline Palin and need me to fill in the blanks for you. There is one rule to being a local celebrity in this city, and that rule is to be humble. Never think everyone knows you, never give a shit if someone does. You are human just like the rest of us and more importantly, you dwell in Orlando just like the rest of us, so that means unless you are 7-feet tall and good on the court, or able to crack a ball in a 3-inch hole (enter cocktail waitress joke here), you’re really not as successful as you think you are. Especially if you can’t even pay a cover. Always be polite and give thanks when free shit is offered, but never expect anything for free. If you’re asked to pay for anything, just do it. Drinks cost $4.50 on average here. That means you’ll still have money left over to open a retired boy band hotdog stand in front of Antigua and continue flourishing in this city. It’s simple really. When you head out, know that at some point you have to open your wallet. And if you’re really that worried about finances remember the very simple golden rule of night life: If you can’t afford to be out, then stay the hell home. meghan@drinkorlando.com

eer Goggles keeps an eye on the valuable players in the local night life community, some with names that are familiar, some who fly under the radar, none that are to be ignored. This month the focus is on the DJs who turn their nose up at other insta-DJs who enter the scene after spinning a couple of
sets on DJ Hero and decide to throw a club night. The real DJs have some of the most extensive vinyl collections and music knowledge in Orlando, and should probably invest in a good security system for their home after announcing that to everyone in DRINK this month.

I
n the handbook of life there is a common misconception. This error, or judgment call, is interpreted so uniquely for each individual it can lead to snide looks, giggles or just a good, old fashioned, “What the fuck is that you’re wearing?” Yes people, it is the great illusion that fashion, drinking and clubs are not one in the same. If this statement seems absurd, then please put on your Crocs, oversized food-stained shirt and go back to watching the Home Shopping Network. Now, let’s get down to the nitty gritty. What exactly is it that you should be wearing out to slurp down those beers and guzzle those mixed drinks? Actually, let’s start with what you should be stuffing in to that trash bag labeled “Goodwill” or “Christmas presents for people I hate.” First on the list, the infamous “tit tent.” Remember the summer of 2008 when the dreaded maxi dress began to make an appearance? Of course you do, you probably have one hiding in your wardrobe. Well they’re back again. These dresses are made of cheap knit fabric, sometimes strapless, usually empire waist, with a skirt that went all the way down to flipflop clad feet. Not only do they make every girl over 100 pounds look like she’s eight months into her pregnancy, they are beginning to creep back into the department stores. If pregnant isn’t the look you would like to compliment your vodka-cup-in-the-air dance moves, go for a well-structured shape instead. Empire waists do nothing to a girl’s figure but make her look like a whale and there are many alternatives! A look at the fall 2010 ready to wear line by Miu Miu shows short, mini dresses and skirts that are cinched at the waist. Adding a skirt with a little more fullness is always fun, and can be easily dressed up for a night out with a short, cropped jacket. Another “gem” you can gladly throw away would have to be Crocs. This goes for men, women, boys and girls! Sure, they are advertised as “comfy,” and “colorful,” but so are diapers and I sure as hell don’t see you wearing those out to the bar. I understand that Crocs have been through many modifications, and they have their new line of semi-bearable styles, but there are endless
19
alternatives. For the ultimate fashionista, there is the new Vivienne Westwood Anglomania + Melissa line of shoes. Made of PVC with metal embellishments and fabric bows, these shoes will give you that weird, sweaty plastic feeling you crave with a form-fitting, stylish look. There are many styles ranging from flats to heels and wedges, and the color options are superior to those of Crocs. If spending over $100 for a pair of plastic shoes seems a tad outrageous, try Bloomingdales for Kate Spade’s new jelly peep toe sandal, or Sketchers traditional criss-cross flat. At least if some douchelord at the bar spills a drink on them, you can just rinse them off in the bathroom sink. Genius! As I bid you adieu, remember that today’s lesson was brought to you by the words “tit tent,” “Crocs” and “do not wear.” Fashion is a beautiful thing, even when you’re holding that PBR tall boy in your hand, as it can be molded into anything you want. Just remember to follow the rules so you don’t look like an ass.
