Interview by Meghan Schalk

buzzed

Drink: How old are you? Dawe: Old enough to know my Orlando nightlife history better than most, young enough to still throw a good party. Drink: How long have you been Dj’ing? Dawe: I started DJing 10 years ago with some cheap turntables I bought at a pawn shop. I have since upgraded gear and have been playing professionally for about five years now. Drink: At what age do you think it is too old to be a DJ? 27? Dawe: (Grimacing)Yeah...that’s about right. Drink: Do you consider becoming a DJ a career choice? Dawe: Well, I don’t know about “career choice,” but it’s something I love to do, and I see it being a part of my life for many more years to come. Drink: I see, so you never finished college. Dawe: I guess not, Drink.

play in this city.

Drink: Could one of your promotional mistakes maybe have been naming your nights after womens private parts, such as Snatch Saturdays? Dawe: That wasn’t my idea. Drink: Sure it wasn’t. I suppose you’ll take no responsibility for “Crunk O’ Ween,” either? Dawe: Shut up.

night or club he won’t

closed their doors completely, putting an end to several of your club nights. Did you take the party phrase “close the place down!” too literally or was this more the fault of the bar? Dawe: I am not going to lie, we have made some promotional mistakes over the years, but we have learned from those experiences. Trying to throw a party in a venue that is not successful, or known for marketing to a niche crowd, is never a good idea.

Drink: This may have nothing to do with your DJ skills, but why Drink: What do you think makes for a successful do DJs wear those stupid giant DJ? letter T-shirts? I noticed Alejandro Dawe: I think knowing how to work a room is Rincon had one on in our last very important. A lot of DJs have a music agenda issue. Is that a DJ thing? that they insist on shoving down people’s throats. If you are DJing at a club or bar that attracts a hip-hop or rock crowd you can’t expect for them to want to listen to your electro playlist, no matter how cool you think the tracks might be. www.oran gecountyco They are going to think you suck. ncepts.com Play to the crowd, not for yourself. Drink: Thanks for the DJ 101: Retards Edition lesson, Brian. Moving on. You’ve had your share of, shall we say, FAILS, in the night life industry. In some cases, some of the venues

Dawe: I actually own the shirt Rincon was wearing in your last issue. He designed that shirt himself and has it for sale in a few local boutiques around town. I also design a lot of those crazy shirts myself. It’s just another way for me to be creative. DRINK: Yes, I believe I remember you wearing a “Pop Dat Pussy” shirt. Clever. Also, interesting that one would consider adding oversized letters of the alphabet to a Haines T-shirt “creative”. Leave it to the brilliant DJs. Next question, I heard, or actually was present in your life as a friend... we’re not friends anymore, in case you were wondering Dawe: Now that’s just mean... DRINK: (ignores and continues) around the time you beat cancer last year. Are the clubs you DJ in smoke free now? Dawe: All the venues I DJ at now just so happen to be smoke free. For those of you not in the know, I was diagnosed with testicular cancer last year and did three months of chemotherapy treatment. I finished my last dose of chemo on New Year’s Eve and have been healthy since. I owe my life to Dr. Lee Zehngebot from Florida Hospital. DRINK: Did you really just plug your doctor in your DJ interview? Dawe: I did.

DRINK: I hear you have a new version of your website, Orange County Concepts. Are you aware that people don’t know what a website is anymore unless it starts with “www.twitter” or “www. facebook?” Dawe: Maybe, but this site is worthy of its own URL. We aren’t just some lame-o nightlife photography site, although our photographers and pictures are pretty awesome. Orangecountyconcepts.com is the only source in Orlando for nightlife news, rumors, mu... DRINK: Hold on, I have no idea what you just said. I was updating my Facebook. Go on. Actually nevermind. I have a better question... You once DJd in the same line up as Steve Aoki. Does having that in writing make you a more valuable DJ and give you certain bragging rights? I mean he was paid by Firestone to be there. He really had no choice but to DJ with you. Dawe: Haha! He took my shirt off on stage... we had a moment. Drink: Gross. Yeah, but seriously, you could have been handicapped, missing all your limbs and singing the alphabet while smashing buttons up there... Dawe: He wanted to see me naked. Drink: Or he was just trying to remove you from the stage and that’s the only thing that came off. Dawe: (silence) Drink: Are there any promoters whom you have done business with that you wouldn’t recommend to other DJs? Dawe: Yes! There are a few out there in Orlando who are notorious for not paying their DJs. I have one in particular in mind. Drink: So since you didn’t name names, you most definitely would work with Chris “Biggins” again? Dawe: Who is that? I have never heard of him. Drink: Let’s continue then. I’m curious. Do you just take any job that is offered? Meaning, if Chuck E. Cheese were to start a dance night, would you want to DJ it? Dawe: Never. I am surprisingly selective. I was offered the resident DJ spot at the “Yup Yup” party hosted by TDs and flatly refused. Good move, I would say, considering the night was canceled in a month. That Chuck E. Cheese gig does sound pretty awesome, though. Can you hook that up for me? Drink: I can and I hear the promoter is very trustworthy. You’ll receive all your tokens before you go home. Dawe: Nice.

14

Drink: To be honest, you’ve been a staple in the club scene for some time now, but I’ve had a hard time keeping up with your nights. Where can you be found these days? Dawe: I have recently teamed up with DJ dLux for my latest weekly party, “LEGIT,” which is every Friday night at Dungeon Lounge & Martini Bar. We do a four turntable DJ set every week, which has never been done on a regular basis anywhere in Orlando. It has been a huge success since we launched the night and we have been at capacity pretty much every week since. It also doesn’t hurt that ladies drink for free and pay no cover. We also have some really big events coming in the fall.

Drink: I completely understand. Oh shit, wait. Did you say ladies drink for free until 12 at your new night? Now I’ll be there. Till 12. Dawe: Sigh... Drink: Thanks, Brian!

Drink: Oh, very lengthy and informative. And when will that night be closing? Dawe: Stop it. I had cancer. You can’t be mean to me. Drink: If you had one wish that could change the Orlando nightlife, what would it be? Dawe: I would wish for a more educated Orlando club crowd. It would be nice if more people were drawn to nights based on the music and not on the spectacle or drink special.

Disclaimer: These interviews are done very tongue and cheek. The interviewee is aware of Meghan’s evil personality and gladly accepts to do the interview with this knowledge. There was laughter galore and after all was said and done, Meghan and Docta Dawe, hand and hand, skipped off into the sunshine and rainbows.

Make your way to the bar and you’ll find a select list of $5 martinis for the ladies and 2-4-1 shots all night; 9 PM; CRAVE RESTAURANT AND BAR; 21+ FREE

From golden era hip-hop, to grimy funk and disco, to ‘80s electro/boogie, all the way to indie and shoegaze, not a (worth listening to) genre of music is left out at this vinyl night favorite. Waxfang describes the night himself as “going to a big house party where the hosts have a really rad, eclectic record collection”. We totally agree. This isn’t a club night, rather just a laid back music scene with a bar that holds it’s own complete with all the fancy beer you could ever dream of on the super duper cheap; 10 PM; REDLIGHT REDLIGHT; FREE

RUMOR SATURDAYS Decorated with a bit of Asian sophistication using shoji screens and a beautifully blue illuminated bar, Dragon Room finds itself among the popular grouping of Central Florida premier ultra lounges and delivers yet another gorgeous venue you wouldn’t expect to be found next to college bars Chillers and Makos. MIDNIGHT MASS If you’ve ever considered yourself a lover of music, Midnight Mass is everything you could wish for. Usually presenting a few local or national acts, Backbooth continues the night with Midnight Mass at 12 am, as DJ

Adam Wright creates a mix of everything from classic soul, Top 40, to indie and electro dance music. The clientele is of the younger, hipper kind, but this isn’t a place that will discriminate against you if you’re not in line with the rest of the kids’ fashion or age. If you come to dance, and that is all, Midnight Mass is just perfect for that. Oh and the keg is free until it floats; 12 AM; BACK BOOTH; FREE-$4

OLD SCHOOL NEW WAVE DJ John G, one of Orlando’s longest running DJs brings I-bar back to it’s roots and gives us a crowd favorite of a night every Saturday. The loyal, more adult crowd has been with the club since the bar opened i’s doors, but still continues to hit the dancefloor the same way they did in the ‘80s for the new wave classics. $2 dollar Bud Lights and wells top the night off perfectly; 10 PM; INDEPENDENT BAR; FREE-$5
