DRINK DRANK DRUNK
FEATURE
by Meghan Schalk
’ve been kicked out of a bar twice in my life. Once it was for something ridiculous, and I never saw it coming; the other time it was for something I can barely remember, because I was so drunk that if I'd been stabbed that night, I would probably have bled vodka. Both times, I found myself face to face with the topic of this month's column: bouncers. No, not the bouncers defined in the online Urban Dictionary as: n. Nice, large shapely breasts that jiggle and bounce a lot and are also fun to play with and stick your co . . . woah. Nope, not those bouncers. The other kind. Back to the first time I was kicked out of a bar: It happened because I looked behind a curtain while standing in line to pee. It was the same curtain I had fallen through earlier – completely sober, I might add – because I assumed it was a wall I could lean on. My stumble caught the bouncer's attention,

and I was instructed not to look behind that curtain. I playfully took a tiny peek (to find only a trash can), and he picked me up by the arms, placed me outside the club, and shut the door on me. At first, I thought he was joking, but after trying to reason with him for ten minutes, I gave up, threw a few insults, turned around and slammed my face into a tree. Awesome. If you’ve ever had a good night downtown – and by "good" I mean the kind of night where you've had your head removed from the inside of a toilet coated in poop and barf – you’ve probably had a runin with a bouncer. If you're like most of us, when you had your encounter, you probably mistakenly assumed that the bouncer was required to hear you out before throwing you out. Not so. I've heard countless complaints from people whose egos were bruised after being kicked out of a bar – and granted, you can be kicked out for some pretty stupid continued on Page 6

shit that doesn’t seem to warrant being removed from the premises (see: peeking at trash cans behind curtains) the best thing to do when you’re asked to leave is just suck it up and walk away. Management will likely side with the bouncer and (unless it’s really serious) if you bring the situation to a cop’s attention, you’re just going to look like a whiny 5-year-old trying to tattle on someone. Let me clue you in to a couple more things: Name dropping an owner or bartender, trying to go back inside to pay your tab, or losing your cool and telling the bouncer he will never amount to anything will not get you back into the bar. Neither will drunken slurring, saying you need to find a friend, or telling the bouncer your age when you’ve forgotten your ID. Any of those things will likely result in annoying him more – trust me, I’ve tried them all. In the end, remember this: Bouncers are paid to be dicks. They are the messengers we all want to shoot because they are the ones responsible for mercilessly enforcing the rules while the bartenders get to sit pretty and pretend to flirt with you. Bouncers are Their job is stressful and requires them to break up fights, occasionally get sucker-punched, and protect paid to be patrons at all times. Yes, protect you. There are some bad seeds in this field, but those hotheads usudicks. ally get weeded out and for the most part, you can have a generally good night without encountering bouncers as long as you don’t get involved in anything stupid – e.g., underage drinking, over drinking, fighting, spewing on the dance floor, letting your boyfriend diddle you in the bathroom stall, etc. If you disagree with any of this – or if you do experience the displeasure of incurring the anger of a bouncer – chalk it up to the risk you took when you left the safety of your home and entered a venue where endless numbers of drunken morons gather. Or you can do as I did the night a door girl at Antigua had me kicked out for being intoxicated on my birthday. While bitching up a storm outside the venue, slyly remove the shoe from your foot and chuck it at her head. Slightly illegal, but far more satisfying if you’re not allowed to reenter anyway. meghan@drinkorlando.com

THE LOCAL COOL
FEATURE
ecause we here at Drink magazine are sure that we know what’s cool around town – and pretty sure most of you don’t – we’ve created a feature dedicated to telling you what’s cool and what’s not. You will have to trust our advice because you’re not cool enough to know any of this yourself. This month’s Local Cool will be measured using the following animal:
Mother Falcon Not long ago I wondered what kind of feat it was to become successful from owning a T-shirt company. I mean, you have a screen press and you're printing graphics . . . on T-shirts. Then I realized that wondering about this is about as pointless as wondering how people can make money for taking photos at clubs or DJ'ing via iTunes all night, and all my wondering just caused me to get pissed off. Digging around, however, did give me answers. As it turns out, Mother Falcon is more than just a T-shirt company; It's a mini music venue/art gallery/ DJ club night/planet-saving T-shirt company! From selling anti-BP t-shirts (with proceeds going to local environmental causes), to the soon-to-be "Mother Falcon Strikes Back" event, which will host and support the Empire Strikes Back-themed artwork of more than 30 local artists to commemorate the 30th anniversary of this mighty movie (God, we're old!), Mother Falcon makes it clear that it's no longer just a T-shirt company. Rather, it's a helping hand in the ever-struggling world of local art, music, and oil-slathered seagulls.

Firestone Live Yes, maybe it was a sad day for some of you when Firestone's Saturday Thursday shut its doors to world-famous DJs and ultra-hip club kids, only to reopen them to a college crowd that would have been content if the DJs were replaced by a beer pong table. But if you believe the end of one popular club night caused Firestone to fall off the radar, you’re sorely mistaken. For years, Firestone’s had the money to bring us top acts, and doing so has been its forte. Now known as Firestone Live, the music venue is large enough to accommodate even the biggest names in the music industry in our own backyard. No more pricey drinks at House of Blues or long trips home on I-4. When the show is over, you have all of downtown at your fingertips – not just the tourist trap that is Downtown Disney. It's a business move that helps the rest of local Orlando nightlife and – even more impressive – is probably one of the most diverse music venues in the city, hosting such acts as Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Paul Oakenfold, Misfits, The Supervillians, LMFAO, Passion Pit, and more.

Sunday’s Rockstar Bowling Think this sounds like a fun idea? All of your friends on leagues? Want to be cool like them? Too bad. Rockstar Bowling on Sundays may be open to any local business, but it's evident this night is ruled by the elite of downtown Orlando. Besides the fact that it has one of the lamest names on earth, cool to only people like Chris Angel and the gimp-hearted Bret Michaels, Rockstar Bowling is run by popular local beer and bar employees, bringing together downtown's finest (and by “finest,” we mean career bartenders) for an evening of see-and-be-seen boozing and competitive game play. What I'm saying is this: If you haven't made the right friends in this city, you'll probably be playing for places like the Dollar Tree and Save A Lot. Yes, even 20 years after high school, this night will remind you that the "in crowd" still exists. For that reason alone, Rockstar Bowlng is not very cool … but it’s still cooler than the people who aren't cool enough to get on the cool teams. Unicorn kittens for all involved. Next season begins August 29th; visit Rockstar Bowling on Facebook for more info. August 2010

Local “Models I know. You'd think that if your friend owns a fancy Nikon camera, and you have a social network page to post photos on, two legs, and female body parts, then you, too, should be a model. Wrong. A big sarcastic thanks to Facebook – and more so to Model Mayhem, a website that allows ANYONE to create a profile and call him or herself a model in hopes of getting paid gigs. Sure, there are definitely a couple of hotties modeling bikinis for Capristan Swimwear at Vintage, but now EVERY girl you run into downtown is in the industry. Five foot tall, fake tits, and willing to pose semi-nude? Model. Friend having a fashion show somewhere downtown and asked you to be in it? Model. I beg: Unless you are signed to a modeling agency or receiving enough paid work to make rent, please stop posing for photos and posting them all over these sites. I scour them looking for Drink cover models and have laid eyes upon more man-faces in bikinis than I should ever have had to see.
Daggering The degrading dance of having your ass assaulted by a strange guy while you're bent over in the bar finally has a name: The Dagger. And what's cooler than being rode hard and put up wet in front of your friends and the rest of the public? Everything. But definitely having photographic evidence on the Internet (and now in Drink) for everyone else to see. Say, "Hi, Mom!"
Standing Behind DJs Being photographed or seen in that spot does not make you cooler. It makes you look (1) pretentious, and (2) heart bubbly for the DJ. Unless you're trying to score some sweet, uneducated DJ ass for the night, it's in your best interest to just join the rest of the crowd and put your hand up and point really hard at the DJ instead (see example 2). Still not cool, but definitely less twinkly. EXAMPLE 2

NECROPOLIS Goth is a trend that seems as if it will never go out of style and I-bar hosts one of Orlando’s only nights that embraces the dark kind on a weekly basis. A mix of industrial New Wave, Goth, EMM and alternative ‘80s welcomes the platform black boots, untraditional locks and a fashion that may not be for everyone. Backbooth continues the night with Midnight Mass at 12 am, as DJ Adam Wright creates a mix of everything from classic soul, Top 40, to indie and electro dance music. The clientele is of the younger, hipper kind, but this isn’t a place that will discriminate against you if you’re not in line with the rest of the kids’ fashion or age. If you come to dance, and that is all, Midnight Mass is just perfect for that. Oh and the keg is free until it floats. 12 AM, BACK BOOTH, FREE-$4

BAND REVIEWS
MUSIC
By Kyle Raker
hen it comes to nightlife, music is a huge part of it, and here in Orlando we’re pretty effin blessed to have a thriving, diverse local music scene. Unfortunately, while most of the big crowds go out to see better known touring acts, some really talented bands can get overlooked. Featured here are four of the many great local acts, and they are definitely worth checking out. Andy Matchett & The Minks (Indie Rock /Pop) Listen if you like: David Bazan, Weezer, Wilco, Nada Surf, Roy Orbison Fronted by singer-songwriter Andy Matchett, Andy Matchett & The Minks offer a deft combination of thoughtful lyrics and “make you move” drive, yet they also manage to hold your attention when they choose to slow things down for a song or two. Known to sometimes break out a military parachute during sets and have the crowd gather with them underneath while they perform, they are one of the few acts in town that puts real effort into crafting a true stage performance.
8/9 The Social
ANDYMATCHETTANDTHEMINKS.BANDCAMP.COM Copper Bones (Rock, Pop, Action-Adventure/Mystery) Listen if you like: Knapsack, My Hotel Year, The Promise Ring, Godzilla Comprised of veterans from the Orlando music scene (members of My Hotel Year, As Friends Rust, Hurrah, History, The Country Slashers, etc.), they are likely the best band in town that you have not seen yet. This is your loss. Their songs are impeccably worked pieces of melodic rock and roll that could easily take you back ten years if you close your eyes—but in no way sounds dated. The band, however, describes it much differently: “Ten years ago, in 2000, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to 8/2 The Social the Orlando underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as musicians of fortune. If you need to rock, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire . . . Copper Bones.” – Copper Bones. I like their description better.

COPPERBONES.COM
Mother Night (Indie-Pop, Post-Punk) Listen if you like: Weezer, Maritime, The Thermals Mother Night is a band built on British Invasion pop sensibilities and hardened in the fires of late 90s & early 00s indie rock. Killer hooks, distinct melodies, and danceable beats are at the forefront, but behind the pop sheen is a darker lyrical current of discontent and sorrow that pulls a listener deeper in, giving 8/5 The Social; new meaning to the party burstiWng out of the speakers. All in 8/29 Backbooth all, it’s a deliciously addictive sound that plays like a well-crafted dark comedy – fitting for a band named after a Vonnegut novel. REVERBNATION.COM/YOURMOTHERNIGHT Viernes (Indie/Experimental) Listen if you like: My Bloody Valentine, Beach House, The Flaming Lips 8/8 Indie Summer Fest Viernes consists of Alberto Hernandez and Sean Moore, and more recently, drummer Tyson Bodiford (Summerbirds in the Cellar). Their sound – a blend of reverberated vocal harmonies, electronic soundscapes, and meandering instrumental hooks- could easily come off cacophonous were it not for their adept musicianship. Adding in Bodiford on drums has added even further lucidity and movement to their live shows, making them one of the most immersive acts in town. They recently released an album through Kanine Records, home to Blind Man’s Colour, Surfer Blood, and Grizzly Bear. MYSPACE.COM/VIERNESVIERNES
