ittle Fish Huge Pond is a gem. The bar is warmly lit by antique lamps and Christmas lights, and its decor is an awesome mix of local artwork, old vintage toys and games. If your nose isn’t stuck high in the air, looking for the next ultra lounge, you’ll fall in love with this place the second you walk in the door. It’s comfortable, unpretentious and interesting. And as random as the ambience may seem, there is one thing about the place that’s always consistent: Everyone there is so fucking friendly. You could walk into the place a lone, sappy, heartbroken mess, but you won’t stay that way for long – before you leave, you’ll be playing drinking games at a table with five new friends. It’s just that kind of place. People come to the bar to meet other people. What a novel idea. Having said that, every friendly laid-back joint has its off nights. Holidays are the worst. They’re the nights when the regulars seem lost in a sea of assholes and oddballs. My evening doing a bartending stint at Little Fish Huge Pond on Labor Day eve was no exception. Opening scene: I’m in the middle of my shift and tired as fuck. “I’ll offer you this,” a sixtysomething-year-old patron says as he holds up a 10 dollar bill in front of me, “if you go upstairs with me tonight.” “A whole 10?” I ask.
“What the fuck are you doing?” I ask him calmly as I back up and watch him fall off the side of his stool. He doesn’t answer me. He plops the 10 in the jar and leaves through the back door. I

Then there was Teeth Girl. I have Preston, bartender at BBQ bar, to thank for this one. First, let’s flashback to the beginning of high school, when I really noticed my teeth weren’t as perfect as they should be. The last thing I wanted to do was get braces during my already-gawky teenage girl stage, so at lunchtime one day I asked my best friend, Preston, what I should do. I trusted his advice. “Don’t get braces, Meghan,” he told me. “Your teeth give you character. Never change them.” Flash forward to the present, and fuck you, Preston, for being sweet and telling me I was perfect as is at 15. Here I am today, 5 feet, 8 inches tall, skinny and blonde, with a smile that gives me “character.” I could have been a model and loaded; instead I am flawed and working stints at local bars in Sanford. But where was I? Oh yeah, Teeth Girl. For about five minutes she stares at me from across the bar. Finally, she waves me over. “What’s your name, beautiful?” she asks. “Meghan,” I say with a smile. “Oh my god, Meghan. You are beautiful,” she says. “I want to lick your teeth so bad.” Jesus Christ. How the hell do I reply to that? “Thanks and that’s very weird,” I tell her. “I don’t think so,” she says. “You look like a British model. Never, ever fix them!” (She yells that last part.) “Oh, thanks. I wasn’t planning on it, I’ve already gone through most of my betterlooking years like this,” I tell her.

check my purse for my mace and promptly text my giant boyfriend to come meet me at the bar.

Am I in a fucking John Waters film? My god, make it stop. Make it stop. I walk over to Harry, my barback for the evening, and quietly demand that he take over the side of the bar she’s on, while I try to look busy on the other. I take a quick peek over at her. She’s still staring at me and now she’s licking her teeth. Fucking gross. I approach a lone patron at the bar.
“
“So Meghan. How BIG is your pussy?” he suddenly asks me, in front of everyone.

“Mmm,” She eyeballs me for a few seconds. “I just wanna lick them. I wanna lick ‘em! I wanna lick ‘em!”
cigarette before putting it out. I move to the other side of the bar to serve a beer and come back to tell him about a nice organic wine we actually have. A few friends of mine are gathered next to him.
What. The. F. If this question isn’t absurd enough, what’s even more absurd is that I’ve actually been asked this before. It happened at Stardust Lounge, and the guy doing the asking was a big shot with Cityfish. Some men seem to think that just because they aren’t attracted to my lady parts, they can ask vulgar questions about them. Wrong. To be honest I wouldn’t even know how to answer this even if I wanted to. How does one measure their vagina? Object comparisons? Pencil. Pint glass? No clue.
I just wanna lick them. I wanna lick ‘em!
“Hi, I seem to be your token gay here,” he begins the conversation. “Oh, I wouldn’t say that,” I reply. “Can I get you anything?”
”
“No thanks,” he says. “So is this all you do? You should really go back to school. I guess it’s too late for that though, huh?” He laughs, turns his nose up and glances at me with sideways eyes.
I’m ready to fire back with a few equally vulgar questions of my own, but I bite my tongue. I think carefully about how to reply, then remember the key to insulting a pretty thirtysomething-year-old gay male is pretty easy: Call him old.
“Yes, this is all I do, I work one night at a bar and go home and shoot squirrels in my backyard to feed myself all week,” I reply as I wipe his counter space with a blatantly dirty washcloth.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding,” I say. “At 50 you should really have a lot more tact than that.”
“That’s sad,” he tells me. “Oh, you guys have wine? It’s probably terrible here. What kind of wine do you have? And what’s your name?” “Red and white and Meghan,” I say.
I stretch out my arm and showcase the rest of the bar for him: “This bar has pieces of Ken dolls and baby heads glued to the ceiling and walls. There is a black baby doll laying in the middle of a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots game in front of you. Do you THINK we have Chianti?” He ignores me and smokes the last bit of his

“Yes, this is how I make zero tips off of someone who is not even buying alcohol and insulting me. It’s my talent,” I say as I walk over to the new patrons on the other side of the bar. And ... scene. Thanks to this evening, I will forever remember Labor Day eve as Creepy Weird Sexual Predator Night. Thank god I only work once a week so I can narrowly avoid the people who decide to come out of the woodwork on the bigger annual fiestas. You better believe my ass will be in the comfort of my own home for the next one – far far away from zombies, teeth lickers and god knows what else this Halloween. ♦

He ignores me and looks around. “This place is a disaster. So, do you have any Chardonnay? No wait, Chianti. I see the Chardonnay has a twist off. Do you have Chianti, corked?”
“Oh my god! I am NOT 50!” He’s clearly annoyed now. “Is this how you make tips? You must be sooo broke.”

2ND ANNUAL HAUNTED SWAMP: WALK OF TERROR The second annual Haunted d Swamp: Walk of Terror openss at The Enzian on Oct. 22. The e Enzian is normally home to o great independent films and d good food, but it’s apparentlyy opening its doors to the gatess of Hell for a few select nightss before Halloween. The Walk off Terror takes place in the e “fetid jungles” behind Enzian’s property – which means it will be haunted primarily by mosquitoes and perhaps the occasional opossum, armadillo, raccoon and – if you’re lucky – transients. The Walks of Terror take place beginning at 8 p.m. on Oct. 22, 23, 29, 30 and (of course) 31. Things to bring: Mosquito repellent, small children/elderly relatives who scare easily, spare change. OKTOBERFEST I don’t know about you, but for me Avalon Park is at the top of the list of Orlando neighborhoods that spring to mind when I think of drinking copious amounts of beer. Just below Baldwin Park, but just above Thornton Park and Downtown. If the Villages retirement community were closer, it’d probably top them all. On Oct. 9, Avalon Park will be hosting its very own Oktoberfest, featuring live music, ethnic dancing, food and a stein-holding contest. The night before there will be a beer garden preview. Things to bring: Whatever vehicle you bought as a symbol of your mid-life crisis, a full stomach, this guy When: Saturday, Oct. 9, 6-9 pm, Avalon Park

NUDE-A-PALOOZA III How often do you get to go watch live bands in the nude while supporting a good cause? Well, here’s your chance to give it a try. The real question is, if you do it once, will you ever want to do it again? Nude-A-Palooza is a charity music festival to benefit Rock Pink, an organization that uses rock & roll to raise awareness about breast health. Tribute bands will cover Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, No Doubt, Elton John, Eric Clapton, The Eagles and KISS. Non-nudists (voyeurs?) are also invited to attend. What to bring: SPF 90+, the kids, lowered inhibitions When: Saturday, Oct. 23, beginning at noon, Cypress Grove Somewhere between ....
CRITICAL MASS ORLANDO Once a month, boatloads of cycling enthusiasts ride en masse around Orlando. Their goal? To promote bicycling and to advocate for safer laws and roadways. Their accomplishment? Frustrating 9-5ers driving home from work while honking and cursing the cyclists taking up the whole driving lane. Regardless, if you enjoy cycling and want to raise awareness about road safety in Orlando, this might be your thing. All types of bicyclists are invited to participate. What not to bring: Deodorant, showers, shaved legs. When: Friday, Oct. 29, 5 pm, starts at Loch Haven Park
LIP RINGS Ah, Orlando, forever home to the tragically unimaginative hipster scene. In fact, hipster is too good a word to give any of you these days. To be “hip” (obviously another word for cool, something lip rings are not) usually requires some semblance of originality. And look at you all: You all have the same exact faces. Lame kitten heads for all of you. 22

What do you think is the most overplayed Halloween costume? “Probably the nurse’s outfit, because every girl with C+ sized tits wears one of those dumb slutty nurse outfits, when none of them are ever able to pull it off. There’s a real lack of originality in Halloween anymore. I want to get a bunch of my friends, dress up like Vikings and just pillage and plunder every idiot in a stupid costume, while driving around on mini motorcycles, and drinking out of horns. But that’s just me.”

BAND REVIEWS
MUSIC
LEFT OF CENTER By Kyle Raker
O
rlando is blessed with a thriving, diverse local music scene. While most of the big crowds go out to see better-known touring acts, some of our talented local bands are overlooked. Featured below are four of the many great local acts I think are worth checking out.
Lonesome City Travelers (Indie, Country, Folk Rock) Listen if you like: The Avett Brothers,, Old Crow Medicine Show, O’Death Fronted by sibling duo Scott and d Chris Metts, Lonesome City Trav-elers offers a bit of a throwbackk sound not often well replicated d by the younger crowd – and theyy do it quite well. The Metts broth-ers are backed by another brotherr 10/17 Will’s Pub, w/ full band; & duo – Jeremy and Justin Martin onn 10/28 Will’s Pub, acoustic w/ David Dondero drums and bass, respectively. Theirr songs often hit a peak when the Metts Mett Me ttss are are harmonizing. harm ha rmon oniz izin ing g It It just just sounds sou ound ndss right. righ ri ghtt I once read an interview with Brian Wilson, in which he stated that the reason The Beach Boys’ harmonies worked so well was because they were all family. He may have been onto something.
MYSPACE.COM/THELONESOMECITYTRAVELERS
An Introduction to Sunshine (Indie-Pop, Dream-Pop) Listen if you like: The Beach Boys, Yeasayer, Beach House Musically, an Introduction to Sunshine has grown quite a bit over the last year, and after hearing some of their new songs, I definitely hear a band that’s maturing from a songwriting standpoint, too. The songs are floaty, reverb-laden forays into pop. They don’t bounce you too fast, they don’t leave you bored. They’ve really found a happy middle ground between a couple of different genres and carved a niche they can call their own. They write the sort of songs you’ll find creeping into your head – songs that have somehow struck a chord with you on a subconscious level. 10/16 Backbooth w/ Color Revolt Photo © Ryan Collman

Emily Reo (Pop, Shoegaze, Visual) E LListen if you like: Twin Sister, Little Dragon, Cocteau Twins EEmily Reo is an electronic act, fronted by the namesake herself. The live show is personified by hauntingly reverh bed vocals, organs and programmed drums. On paper, b tthis really does not do justice to Emily or her live show. TThe songs are almost hypnotic and dynamic enough tto keep your interest. She is definitely unique amongst Orlando music acts, the primary reason I wanted to feaO tture her here. There is no one else in town who blends electronic music with a voice like hers. It’s a truly ethee rreal experience. MYSPACE.COM/EMILYREO
10/14 Backbooth w/ Light Pollution
Nightlights (Punk Rock, Pop Punk) Listen if you like: Latterman, Menzingers, Descendants Nightlights bring you good, old-fashioned pop punk. By that I mean great 3-4 chord punk rock with polished (but not too polished) melodies o and pop song structure. Ad by that I do not mean oth w/ Rufi Fall Out Boy. Previous efforts of the members 10/13 Backbo of this band included hardcore acts such as Nervous Breakdown, Dancefloor Tragedy and No Harm Done. I have decided not to hold that against them. Nightlights brings you plenty of sing-along-able songs with some great harmonized vocal melodies, and they’re already on par with some of the longer-tenured punk bands in town.
