DR SIMON JACKSON
Simon’s vocation was inspired many years ago. Whilst a young student on an expedition in the Amazon rainforest, he was taken under the wing of a local Shaman from the Jaguar tribe. This old man shared with him the knowledge of the many plants that provided the primary health care for his tribe’s ailments and had done for many generations. This knowledge was not written anywhere but had been passed down from his forefathers through many generations of medicine men. This began Simon’s fascination with nature’s amazing and complex powers of healing and the ancient medicines derived from indigenous flora from different parts of the world. He has travelled around the globe since, to many of the ancient rainforests and lived with local tribes to research his science and met with many Shamans and local healers. It saddens the medicine men to know that many wonderful medicines have either not yet been discovered or simply lost to human knowledge because younger generations were no longer interested enough to follow their traditional practices. NATURAL PRODUCTS COMMUNITY
The Natural Products Community (NPC) is a not-for-profit foundation set up to channel a percentage of profit from Dr Jackson’s towards continuing research into medicinal plants and supporting indigenous cultures in the places from where these plants naturally derive. • R&D into plants to develop products for the treatment and prevention of ill health to promote well-being • To protect and conserve species that are of specific pharmacognostic value under threat in their country of origin by producing well-being and other products using an ethical and fairtrade supply chain including small-scale producers in the country of origin or the region of origin of the species used • To promote study in the field of pharmacognosy and natural products in all relevant sectors • To promote knowledge transfer of traditional plant use from elders in indigenous cultures to younger generations • Supporting the communities that surround our supply chain, ensuring that they benefit from the company’s success.
The NPC owns no labs, no land and no equipment. The NPC outsources all its research to institutions with existing facilities (e.g. Universities, local laboratories, and local companies etc.). The NPC role is purely as a facilitator, making things happen.

MARULA
Marula’s healing oil is extracted from the kernels (nuts) of the marula tree and has long been used as a cosmetic by Southern African women who massage it into their hair and onto their skin. In Swaziland it is used traditionally by pregnant women and new mothers to reduce stretch marks. Marula oil naturally softens, nourishes and revitalises the skin. It is easily absorbed and contains high proportions of oleic acid and linoleic fatty acid, making it ideal for topical application. High in natural antioxidants, marula oil has also been shown to improve skin hydration and skin smoothness, and to reduce redness.

FRANKINCENSE
Boswellia carterii (Bursuraceae) Frankincense also known as olibanum, is one of the oldest aromatic substances used by mankind, already in antiquity it was used as incense in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome. The genus Boswellia comprises of different species, some of which produce aromatic resins, commonly known as incense. One of these is Boswellia carterii, and when the bark is cut, a gum resin oozes out. The dried resin, known as Guggul in India or Frankincence in Western Countries has many medicinal properties. The use of the plant is common in the African, Chinese and Ayurvedic traditional medicines. Olibanum oil is obtained by steam distillation of the Boswellia resin, and has a woody-balsamic scent with citrus tones. It has been used traditionally for the treatment of acne, wound healing, bacterial and fungal infection treatments and minimizing scars. The oil contains Boswellic acids (pentacyclic triterpenic acids) the most powerful being AKBA and ABA which have powerful anti-inflammatory activity, it provides for an ideal facial toner, smooths wrinkles and calms troubled or inflamed skin conditions.

Contains helenalin (toxic at high doses, so patch testing recommended, and not to be taken orally), a sesquiterpene lactone that is a major active ingredient for its anti-inflammatory action (used mostly for bruises and stretch marks). Arnica montana has been used medicinally for centuries, the roots have been shown to contain thymol, which are used as a natural fungicide/preservative, but is generally used to treat strains and sprains.

The flowers were used by Ancient Greeks, Roman, Middle Eastern and Indian cultures as a medicianl herb. The petals contain triterpenoid esters and the carotenoids flavoxanthin and auroxanthin (anti-oxidants). Adansonia digitata, (Malvaceae) is a tree native to Madagascar, Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and Australia. Baobab is known in Africa as The Tree of Life because there are many traditional uses for every part of it, from the leaves to the roots. The seed oil is used by African women to protect their skin and hair against the harsh savannah environment and to prevent and treat dry skin conditions. Baobab seed oil contains almost equal measures of palmitic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid as well as some small quantities of stearic and cyclopropenoid acids, it is prized as a moisturiser, and used as a lip balm for anti-chapping and used on nails against breakage. The fruit has six times as much vitamin C as an orange, is a plentiful source of antioxidants it combats skin aging by improving skin firmness and strength by boosting the elastic quality of the skin and encouraging cell regeneration. Tightening of the skin diminishes the look of facial lines.

KIGELIA
Kigelia pinnata (Bignoniaceae) is a tree found in parts of Sub Saharan Africa. Traditionally extracts from this tree have been used by tribal women to ensure a smooth, blemish free complexion and as a skin and breast firming remedy. The fruits from the tree are used to treat excema, psoriasis and many other skin irritations. Compounds identified within the plant attach to dark pigmentation and stop melanin production, thus diminishing sun spots and liver/age spots, especially effective on sun damaged skin. The Bignoniaceae species, to which the Kigelia tree belongs, contain iridoids and napthaquinones and phy tosterols, which are antimicrobial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory, therefore reducing redness, puffiness and minimise blemishes. Isoflavones and steroid saponosides present in the fruit are known to have a firming effect on the dermis, skin drainage and a restituitive effect, restoring elasticity and firmness. The Sapononosides found in Kigelia inhibit degradation of the skin tissue structure that supports biomolecules such as collagen and elastin through a protective action from its plant hormones.
