Aquaplex waterslide faces uncertain future Pascale Taylor |

Inside Drumheller

The Drumheller Aquaplex offers all year round fun for everyone. Unfortunately, despite the major renovations carried out in the spring, its waterslide is still in need of structural repairs. For five year old Matthew and three year old Ryder, the waterslide is the best thing at the Aquaplex. Sarah Sam, their mother, explains “all they want to do when we go to the Aquaplex is go down the waterslide, they have such fun! There isn’t anything else for them to do there as no pool is available for them to splash about in unless I go in with them”, says Sarah, “I think they’d be very upset if they didn’t have it…I’d have to take them somewhere else out of town as there are no other public pools in Drumheller.” In view of the age of the waterslide, the conundrum now faced by the town is refit, re-

place or shutdown until funds can be found. Al Kendrick, director of Infrastructure confirmed “it is a major concern for us but is in our budget process right now. We still have some issues we need to address a bit further before we move forward. Right now, this is sitting in the list and we really need to take a hard look at it this year.” Although there is no indication of the costs involved at this stage, a refit may not be an option due to the major reconstruction which may be required. Kendrick is anticipating that a decision will be made on this issue during the first week of January as the town will need to have the grant application ready to submit for funding. Kendrick stresses that if the slide becomes unsafe at any point in time, it will be closed. Councillor Sharel Shoff told Inside Drumheller that following the town’s budget meet-

ing on Monday December 14, improving the waterslide is a high priority. No doubt the fate of the wa-

terslide will be eagerly awaited in the New Year.

New reporter for inSide Drumheller inSide Drumheller publisher Ossie Sheddy is pleased to welcome Pascale Taylor to the team as a reporter/photographer. Pascale was born and raised in France, where she studied “Literature and Civilization of English-speaking countries”. In 1990, she emigrated to England where she worked as a secretary in legal and financial institutions for several years before branching out into computer support. Earlier this year, Pascale and her husband decided on a change of life and the opportunity came up to move to Drumheller when her husband secured employment in the area. Since arriving in April, Pascale has been volunteer-

ing with the Communities in Bloom organization. “This was a good way to get to know the valley and meet new people”, explains Pascale “and working at inSide Drumheller is a great opportunity to take a more active role within the community.”

A: Q: A:

My child had started taking Ritalin after being contacted by his teacher about his behavior, and lack of attention on a daily basis. We went to the Doctor who agreed this may help, however he became a very different person, and seemed to be losing his personality. After a few months I decided to take him off the medication without telling the teachers to see if they would notice. NOTHING!!! With 2 other children going to be starting school in the next few years, I wonder where do I go to get the proper advice for my children if problems like this arise again. Many people I bring this up to have gone through the same thing. Sincerely, Concerned Parent My best advice is don’t be afraid to get a second opinion or even a referral to a pediatrician or child psychiatrist. ADD or ADHD can be hard to diagnose or misdiagnose. I had a discusion with an optometrist who said that a large number of children that are diagnosed with ADHD have vision problems (they could not see the board so they didn’t pay attention). Finally, don’t be afraid to do some research on your own. I recently cleaned out my cupboards and found old prescriptions from years back, where is a safe place to dispose of these without throwing them in the garbage and risking the dangers? from Past Due First of all, please do not throw them out or flush them down the toilet, as this can contaminate our environment and drinking water. The best thing to do with expired or unused medication is to bring them back to your pharmacy. From there, they are picked up and disposed of properly.

inSideENTERTAINMENT 27th annual Christmas dinner tradition continues at O’Shea’s Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A Drumheller tradition continues this Christmas day at O’Shea’s Restaurant with the annual Santa’s Christmas Dinner. The original event was started by three local families in 1983, simply because there were no restaurants open on Christmas Day. It has now become a place to enjoy Christmas dinner in the company of others. “The event has been running 27 years. I’ve been involved for 15 years. I remember being a young teenager singing a special version of Jingle Bells with Billie and Brock Wood, Sandy McDonald, my grandfather, Bev Cole with Delmar Adie playing the keyboard. Our goal now is to carry on the great tradition that they started,” said Bob Sheddy, one of the volunteers helping out with this year’s event. Local patrons grace the event for a number of reasons. Some may decide not to cook they are not expecting guests, or maybe are too busy to cook a formal dinner. For others it may be impossible to be with family this season because many live out of town, and are not able to travel. For still others it has become a social event where friends celebrate the season. “Everyone is welcome at the annual Santa’s Christmas Dinner, and the only prerequisite is having the Christmas Spirit,” said Sheddy. “ In fact, some have made it a tradition to bring their family to the dinner year after year.” “Our staff at Century 21 work hard each December

planning, organizing and helping the event come together. We all feel very fortunate to be able to give back to the community with events like this,” says Gary Chambers of Century 21 PowerRealty.ca. The event has previously been held at the Elks Club, Drumheller Inn, Stavros and Boston Pizza. Most recently, O’Shea’s is the venue. Chris and Heather Jones, (who operate both Boston Pizza and O’Shea’s), have acted in a generous manner allowing their restaurants to be the site of the event for the last few years. “We’re honoured to have the dinner at O’Shea’s this year,” commented Cam Christianson, of Canalta. “It’s a great group of people to spend Christmas with.” The meal includes a homemade turkey dinner with all the fixings, coffee, pie, dessert, chocolates and great company. Rick Dipietro from Canadian Linen is supplying the white linen tablecloths and festive red napkins, a detail that has remained from the beginning. The organizers will also have a shuttle running for those who need a ride to the event. They will also be happy to deliver care packages for those who can’t make it out. The organizers are still looking for entertainment for this year. For more information on this event, contact Bob Sheddy at 403324-2222. On the day of the event, for pickup or delivery, you can call 403-8232222 or O’Shea’s at 403823-2460.

you? WHOare Santa Claus How old are you? As old as there are believers. How many languages do you speak? All of them! Where do you live? In the North Pole. How many children do you have? Let me check with Mrs Claus...No, we don’t have any, we have all these elves though. What do you like about your job? Flying through the air, on my sleigh with my reindeers on Christmas Eve delivering presents. Do you get Christmas presents? If so, what do you want for Christmas: Absolutely I get presents, from the elves and Mrs Claus! They are all favourite songs, but I like Jingle Bells a lot. Do you have a special Christmas dinner? Yes absolutely! Which are your favorite snacks? Milk and chocolate chips cookies, that I get from every household, that’s why I am so jolly! What’s your favorite Christmas drink? Eggnog. What makes reindeers fly? Magic! Why has Rudolf got a red nose? So he can

lead all the other reindeers through the fog and in the dark. How do you manage to go around the world in one day? It’s magic! Where do elves come from? How do you become an elf? Hmm, let me check with Mrs Claus…..they come from the North Pole she tells me, she also said you have to be born an elf to be one. After all the deliveries are completely, how do you and Mrs Claus kick back? We watch TV and have some snacks. Have you ever been too jolly? No, no, you can’t be too jolly!! Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. A friend once mentioned the difference between good marshmallows and cheap ones. I always thought a marshmallow was just a marshmallow. Now that I have made them, I know what the real thing is! They are easy to work with and quite fun to make while being creative with all sorts of garnishes and dips. You can do such a nice clean perfect square cut because of the consistency of them. I haven’t dropped one into hot chocolate yet, but i am sure it will be quite yummy. Homemade Marshmallows 2 tsp. butter 3 envelopes unflavored gelatin 1 cup cold water, divided 2 cups sugar 1 cup light corn syrup 1/8 tsp. salt 1 tsp. clear vanilla (or try peppermint, almond, lemon for flavoring) Optonal toppings: I melted chocolate, hot fudge, caramel ice cream topping, candy coating Optional garnishes: cocoa, icing sugar, crushed candies, chopped nuts, coloured sugars, sprinkles, crushed graham wafers. Line a 9 x 13 pan with foil and grease with butter. In large metal bowl, sprinkle gelatin over 1/2 cup water; set aside. In large heavy pan, combine sugar, corn syrup, salt and remaining water. Bring to boil, stirring occasionally. Cook without stirring, until soft ball stage (240 degrees). Remove from heat and gradually add to gelatin. Beat on high until thick and double in volume, about 15 minutes. Beat in vanilla. Spread in prepared pan. Cover and stand at room temperature 6 hours or overnight. Using the foil, lift marshmallows out of pan. Coat a knife or pizza cutter with cooking spray and cut in 1 inch squares. Dip in candy coatings, drizzle with toppings or coat with garnishes by rolling. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. * I kept a bowl of water beside my work space and dipped the knife in water, rather than greasing it. I also kept my fingers damp because the marshmallow is so sticky to work with. You just have to be careful because the candy color runs if it gets wet while you are dipping the marshmallow in. I didn’t have clear vanilla and the marshmallows still came out a nice white color. Gluten and nut allergies I came across some recipes for different types of allergies - gluten, nut and dairy. I wanted to try some out to include the people who have to be wary of their diet restrictions. I haven’t had a chance to make any as yet and don’t like to share recipes I have not personally tried. But because I have been too busy making the “bad” stuff, I am not sure when I will find the time to try these. Here is one that looks pretty straight-forward and maybe someone will enjoy it over the holidays

while avoiding nuts and gluten, although it does contain corn syrupwhich is not the healthiest ingredient out there: Puffed rice brittle 2 cups sugar 1/2 cup corn syrup 1/2 cup water 2 Tbsp. butter pinch salt 1 tsp. vanilla 1/2 tsp. baking soda 2 cups puffed rice cereal (not rice krispies) Stir together sugar, syrup and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat and cook with out stirring until the soft ball stage of 234 degrees (test by dropping 1 tsp. hot syrup in cold water - it will form a soft ball which will flatten when removed from water). This should take 10 to 15 minutes to cook. Brush the sides of pan with pastry brush dipped in water as needed. Stir in butter and salt. Boil until 300 degrees, about another 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and soda. Then stir in the cereal. Immediately, pour onto a greased baking sheet, spreading with greased spatula. Let cool then break into pieces. Store in air-tight container up to a week. Makes 3 dozen pieces. I will try to make some of the other allergy-free items to share in the new year. Have a sweet Christmas!

Drumheller woman drawing her future Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A Drumheller woman is pursuing her artistic talent, working in the animation industry. Jennie Rutz is making Toronto home working as a storyboard artist and designer. While her career has been short, she has already racked up some impressive credits including the Curious George feature, and to think it all began doodling favorite cartoons in grade school. “I always loved drawing cartoons and doing arts and crafts when I was young. I used to draw the Ninja Turtles for my classmates in first grade and my hero was Mr. Dressup,” said Rutz. “My parents, Randy and Judy Rutz, were incredibly supportive and encouraging right from the beginning.” In working in design, she take an active role in sculpting the characters. “Design primarily involves creating the characters in the show, deciding how best to communicate their personality in the style

of the show through their body shapes, facial features and what they wear. As well this sometimes involves creating full-color illustrations as to what a scene in the finished show might look like, capturing the mood, setting and circumstances of the characters in whatever the plot of that episode might be,” said Rutz. From doodling in Grade 1, by Grade 3 she was spending parts of the summer months in courses at Alberta College of Art and Design. There she met an instructor that introduced her to animation. “I took kids classes at ACAD initially, and met the teacher, Kevin Kurytnik, who introduced me to Quickdraw Animation Society where he also taught animation workshops for kids. After that I was a regular at Quickdraw every summer where I made short animated sequences through a variety of animation techniques, drawing, claymation, cutout, sand

Choir for Torch Celebration grows Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

More than a hundred of voices will sing out to greet the Olympic Torch when it makes its way through the valley. Not in recent memory has there been a bigger buzz in Drumheller than the arrival of the Olympic Torch as it winds its way across the country. While inSide Drumheller reported in its November 27 edition that Rosebud Chorale and the Rosebud Masterworks Choir were to perform There’s a Light/Cette Flamme, a song written by Quebec artist Gregory Charles specially for the relay. Since then inSide Drumheller has learned there will be many more voices in the mix. LaVerne Erickson says the Westwinds Choral Ensemble from Calgary and the Wildrose Chamber Choir from Three Hills will perform along side the Rosebud Choirs. This will add another fifty plus people to the choir. This may be one of the largest choirs to perform for the

torch, as Erickson says the stage, which travels with the Olympic Torch to each venue is only able to hold about 50 performers. “They are going to have to build a separate little choir loft for everybody to sing,” said Erickson. “We have all been working on that song.” Because of the size, the entire choir won’t be on stage, but their voices will be heard. “In all there will be about 110 singers,” he said. “This will sound really good in the Passion Play Site.” This adds one more element to the celebration slated for January 16. Performers announced include Corb Lund, Jenn Beaupre, Carol Todor Dancers and DCHS singers all in anticipation of the arrival of the Olympic Torch Olympic This isn’t the end of the day for the choirs. At 3 p.m. and at 7 p.m. they will be performing at the Knox United Church as a fundraiser for the Canadian Badlands Passion Play “We are making a big day out of it,” said Erickson. “In the afternoon everyone will
