There is just one more chance for residents to get a ticket to take part in the Olympic Torch Relay Celebration at the Canadian Badlands Passion Play site. There are only 500 tickets left to distribute, and this will happen at the Greentree Mall this Saturday, December 12 starting at 10 a.m. Advice from John Sparling, co-chair Torch Relay Celebration Committee, is to get there early. “On the basis of the first two releases, we’re expecting the tickets will be gone,” said Sparling. “We suggest people get down to the Co-op early in the morning, probably at 9:30 a.m. Tickets will be available on a first come, first serve basis.” The first Saturday of distribution on November 28 in Drumheller hardly lasted two hours. Last Saturday, 400 tickets rolled out the door in an hour. Sparling has emphasized that although the tickets are free, they expect those who pick them up are committed to taking in the performance that will include Corb Lund, Jenn Beaupre, The Rosebud Chorale, Carol Todor’s Dancer School and DCHS singers.

Hi-Way 9 switches to denim for Morgan Jayne Project Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Momentum is building to make Christmas happen for the children in Honduras served by the Morgan Jayne Project. The Drumheller Mail brought readers the story in its December 9 edition of how logistic nightmares have held up the annual Christmas Appeal gifts at the US border. The Morgan Jayne Project has since launched a campaign to send $4,000 to Familias Saludables to allow them to buy Christmas gifts for the 400 children served by the project. This campaign has collected steam in just a couple days. Donations are pouring in and on Wednesday, through the generosity of dozens in town and beyond, they have raised about $1,300 of the funds needed. Upon hearing about the difﬁculties, Hi-Way 9 Express has found a novel way to support the campaign. “What we have decided to

Because of limited parking the committee had the foresight to set up a shuttle bus service departing from Canadian Tire and Freson IGA. “We are encouraging to get on the site by 10 a.m,” said Sparling. He stresses that those who come should dress for the weather and not bring pets. “I am pleased that Drumheller is reacting so well to this and bottom line, it will be a great day,” said Sparling. The town is getting into the mood for the event. This week town crews were hanging ﬂags from power poles lining the streets starting at the Gordon Taylor Bridge south to the intersection near the Husky station. They also lined Highway 575 from the Husky intersection to the entrance of the Passion Play Site. They will also be at prominent intersections throughout town. The ﬂags are being installed by The Town of Drumheller Infrastructure Services and the brackets were made at the Drumheller Institution. According to Ray Telford who is acting as a liaison with The Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee, these signs display the town’s Route Community Designation.

Senior Sabres drop home opener Hanna Hawks tests St. Anthony's team Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller

The St. Anthony's Sabres showed some strong signs in their debut against Hanna. The senior boys Sabres basketball team held home opener and season opener on Tuesday, December 8. The team came out running and gunning in the ﬁrst quarter and matched Hanna point for point. However the Hawks grinded their way back with quick jumpers and successful penetration, and by half Hanna was up by 11 points. The Sabres looked inside and found some success in the post and three minutes into the third quarter were able to draw Hanna

into five fouls, giving them the bonus situation. The Sabres chipped away at the lead, bringing it to within five points. A defensive breakdown towards the end of the third quarter started a slide that ended with Hanna winning 91-71. Brandon Gruber had 32 points and Anthony Merkel had 18 in the effort. Coach Gavin Makse said the team had some bright spots including some great defensive plays and strength down low. Allowing Hanna to score 91 points however is a sign of a lack luster overall defensive effort. Two Hanna guards were able to combine for 66 points alone. “Defense will be our focus over the next couple practices,” said Makse. The action doesn’t stop for the Sabres. They will be in Three Hills to play Prairie this Tuesday, December 15. This will be their last game before the Christmas break.

Former Drumheller Falcon Jeﬀ Hendricks passed away in 2006 at the young age of 45. Since that time in his name, a group of friends and former teammates have raised more than $12,000 to support youth and hockey in the area and in Hendricks’ home town of Hardisty. The Jeﬀ Hendricks Memorial

Game is coming up on December 19 as the Dragons take on the Okotoks Oilers. This game helps to raise funds to support the award, and to honour some of the players that have earned the distinction. The Jeff Hendricks Memorial Scholarship has been awarded since the Drumheller Dragons 2005-2006 season. The first recipient was Talon Berlando. Other Dragons that have received the honour include Trent Colberg and Trevor Smyth. In the 20072008 season they also awarded a scholarship to Christine Hodgson who was playing for the Mount Royal Cougars. The fund goes beyond its flag-

ship scholarship. The fund has also sent three area youth to the Drumheller Dragons Summer Hockey School, contributed to Minor Hockey tournaments and has purchased defibrillators for the Hardisty Arena and for the Drumheller Dragons. The Jeff Hendrick Memorial Game is always an exciting event. They will be holding a silent auction in the foyer of the Drumheller Memorial Arena with some great items including a Sirius Satellite Radio, NHL photographs and NHL jerseys. One featured item is the Midfield Supply Sky Suite at the Pengrowth Saddledome as the Flames take on the L.A Kings on December 30. There are 14 tickets available, along with the premier place to watch the game. Also at the game, the committee one take time out to recognize last year’s recipient, and then this year they will be awarding a member of the Junior Dragons with admission to the Drumheller Dragons Summer Hockey School. Since the start of the season at each home at each home game a Junior Dragons was entered into a draw to attend the Drumheller Dragons Summer school. At the game they will be drawing from the 19 entries. The Jeff Hendricks Memorial Hockey game goes Saturday, December 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Rosebud announces five-show line-up for 2010 season Submitted | Inside Drumheller Rosebud officially announced its 2010 line-up of five outstanding plays. This year’s theme “consider yourself home at Rosebud” will feature an Italian comedy, two British musicals and two South African dramas. The 2010 season kicks off March 12th with We Won’t Pay! We Won’t Pay!, a comedy by Dario Fo. “At Rosebud Theatre, we’ve always been about stories that connect to the soul of a human being,” says Artistic Director, Morris Ertman. “Our 2010 season was influenced in large part by the financial difficulties of this past year in the world. We wanted to explore stories that took the notion of hardship and turned it on its ear - saying that there is indeed a new tomorrow there is

hope.” Italian housewives go crazy! Two housewives revolt against the high price of groceries. Their hapless husbands are swept up into the mad chaos of police inspectors, funeral directors and looming fatherhood. A crazy household story for the recession blues that leaves no comic stone unturned! “So, the season kicks oﬀ with We Won’t Pay! We Won’t Pay!, a story of what happens when people say ‘enough is enough’. It’s a crazy, madcap adventure of ‘not paying’ that puts the common person in the centre of a whacky revolution that invades the household. Somehow, we need to be able to laugh at our troubles every now and then. And in this play, we do that.” This is followed up by Oliver! (Musical by Lionel Bart - May 28 – August 23).

Expectations and inspiration explode on stage with energy and delight. “Woza Albert! is all about the second coming of Jesus - to Apartheid South Africa - where home to many is a slum. But it is a show infused with a lively spirit of entertainment and humour. In the fall Rosebud presents The Road To Mecca (Drama by Athol Fugard - September 10 October 23). A life worth living. A freespirited old woman fights to stay

in her eccentrically decorated but dangerous home against the wishes of her unfriendly neighbours and well-intentioned friends. An inspiring story about living in the center of one’s life, no matter how little of it may be left. They end the season with The Secret Garden (Musical by Jim Crabtree - November 5 – Dec ember 23). Breaking through the frost. The beloved story of three children transformed by the miracle of emerging buds and ﬂowers brings a Christmas garden to Rosebud. “The Secret Garden is about a girl placed in an unfamiliar home, and the magic she encounters in a garden that transforms h e r and everyone around her. are happy endings that come out of the other side of times of despair! Life is actually good most of the time and we savour that goodness when we’ve had about of the bad!” Adds Ertman, “So, a variety of plays taken from all over the world take up the stage in Rosebud in 2010. And they’re all shows that give us some kind of understanding of what it means to be home. And I must say that Rosebud is considered by so many Albertans to be their theatre. They feel like they’re coming home when they drive into our little valley. I think that’s the backdrop against which our shows shine. People are charmed and taken by the whole Experience of Rosebud, crowned by theatre that connects to them in a personal and dynamic way.

September 18, 1928 - December 7, 2009 James Henry (Jim) Wilton passed away in Calgary on Monday, December 7, 2009 at the age of 81 years. He was born and spent his entire life in Drumheller and was employed in many occupations including truck driving for different companies in the valley. He also drove taxi and worked as a bartender at the Whitehouse and Waldorf Hotels. His last job before retiring was driving pilot truck for McLean’s Construction. Jim married Frances Campbell on December 1, 1950 and together they raised a family of eight children. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his family and was happiest when surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening, supplying the families with fresh produce all summer, watching sports especially the Calgary Flames and collecting coins. He passed his coin collecting interest on to his children and grandchildren. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Mabel; brothers, Doug and Bill; sister Bonnie Smith and beloved son Darrell. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Frances; children, Carol (Garry) Mahoney, Allan, Dave (Donna), Don (Eleanor), Brian (Audrey), Debbie Schinnour and Mike; 19 grandchildren and their spouses; and 20 great grandchildren; brothers, Ken, Bob (Marie), and Gordon (Shirley); sister Barb Campbell; many nieces and nephews; a friend he could always count on, Dorelle LowesPeterson; and many friends and acquaintances. In lieu of flowers if desired, donations may be made to the Drumheller Heart and Stroke Foundation. Here’s a hot one for you. This one almost made me do a “spite-take” with my morning orange juice. The item was in last Wednesdays Calgary Herald, and was of course, political in nature. Before going into it, I must be sure we all know hypocrisy by the same definition. Webster has it as “pretending to be what one is not, or to feel what one does not, especially a pretence of virtue.” Allow me an example: The rich man loaded down with gifts, passes the homeless man on the streets and wishes him a “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year”, while also passing the Salvation Army Christmas kettle. This man makes a pretence of caring by wishing the homeless man a Merry Christmas, while at the same time by passing those who help the homeless. He pretends to give a damn about those in need, he is a hypocrisy. The laughter which almost jolted my orange juice was provided by Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe. The occasion was a ceremony organized by the government to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the shooting of 14 young female students by a deranged young man at Ècole Polytechnique in Montreal. Mr. Duceppe described the ceremony as an insult to the victims and their families. Those shootings you see, prompted the government (aided and abetted by a group of vociferous female lobbyists) to bring a national firearms registry into law. It has proven to be very divisive and very expensive, but not very effective. The Concervatives have vowed to bill it, and are right now working to do just that. In fact the bill put forward to abolish the registry was introduced by a woman. (That would be an example of irony.) Meanwhile back to the ceremony, there are politicians of every stripe, including the woman who introduced the abolition bill, and beside her, the minister responsible for the status of women, Helen Guenis. That is where Mr. Duceppe comes in. He claims it “pure hypocrisy” for those MPs to be in attendance, while at the same time supporting abolition of the long gun registry. It is hypocrisy, and to quote: “The Bloc will never associate itself with hypocrisy.” “Never, never, never.” Oh really. Mr Duceppe and his party members sit in the Canadian House of Commons, they vote on everything from law making to financing; they take house of handsome salary; they take advantage of everything Canada has to offer, yet they could care less what happens beyond the borders of Quebec, as their only (to bilingual) raison d’être is separation from Canada. They are ‘pretend’ Canadians, they are treasonous Canadians, and in this age, we pay them. Think back to the definition of hypocrite and you will see that Mr. Duceppe recognizes hypocrisy when he sees it, and so he should, as he is its greatest practioner. “The Bloc will never associate itself with hypocrisy.” “Never, never, never.” I laugh, unfortunately the joke is on us. It is not my intention to panic anyone, but by this time next week, there will be only 6 days remaining until Christmas. There are cards to write (does anybody still do that) tarts and cookies to bake, a tree to purchase and decorate, gifts to pick out and buy, parcels to wrap etc. So much to do, so little time, but don’t panic, you’re reading this now, and there are almost 14 days till Christmas. Drop the paper and get moving.

This month we reviewed the book, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. Lori Stefanishion And, once again, we were divided as a club. But this inSide Drumheller time I was one who did not like the book. Personally, Book Columnist I would not recommend giving it as a Christmas gift to the book lover on your list. I am not sure if it is because this is a busy time of year and I needed nothing else to occupy my time so I could spend it reading over 800 pages. I definitely found a lot of time wasted on descriptions and events that had no bearing whatsoever to do with the plot. The same goes for a lot of characters, all having names that were next to impossible to pronounce or remember. And ditto for the names of places as well. I have since learned the book was translated from its original Swedish language, which explains a lot. In my opinion, nothing really happens in the story before about 400 pages, except a brief history that could be summed up in about 2 pages. Then, it gets interesting around page 600 or so but that only lasted for another few pages. I then skimmed until after the 800th page. This was a book I wished I’d read the first and last page only! Perhaps an abridged version would have held my interest. Now, there are others who found the main characters interesting as well as the storyline and intrigue they felt. To be fair, this is a comment from one of our members:“I thought she was an interesting and “feisty” character and I liked the change from the grim and depressing female characters who are victims that we have read so much about!” Most of our group did not like a lot of the main male character’s personality. But that is all part of the story. There are two more books in this series. Some of our book club will be reading them. I will wait and just hear about them because this author did not win me over. Stieg Larsson passed away after this murder mystery trilogy was published and circulated. To add a positive note, I am presently reading a book that has held my attention much better and I would recommend it. It is called “Say You’re One of Them” by Uwem Akpan, a Nigerian native. This is a collection of stories paying tribute to children of Africa facing the most agonizing of circumstances. It is neither light nor joyful, but certainly reminds one of what others are going through outside our comfortable little worlds. I will look forward to hearing from others who have read and enjoyed, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, or other books in this sequence.

Gertrude Margaret Paullus of Drumheller, beloved wife of the late Phillip Alcide Paullus, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2009 at the age of 99 years. Gertrude was born February 17, 1910 in Ethelton, Sask., to Eliza Prudence (Ibister) and John James Fidler. She grew up in Saskatchewan and it is there where she met and married Phillip. They moved to Alberta in the late 50's and settled down in Newcastle where she resided until her death. Her two favourite hobbies were baking and gardening, teaching her children and grandchildren all about them. Family meant the world to her and she always enjoyed family get togethers. She is predeceased by parents John and Eliza Fidler, loving husband Phillip Alcide Paullus, son Gordon Alcide Paullus, grandsons Kirk and Gregg Gardner, sisters Violet Cromartie, Eva Holt, Olive McKay, Elizabeth McHaughlin and Florence Zachow, brothers Ale, Doug, Joe, Arthur, Hilard, James and Alvin Fidler. She is survived by family Velma and Blaze Dillman, Rick and Sheila Paullus, Clint and Marilyn Paullus, grandchildren Gary Paullus, Diane Bretton, Tracy (Carl) and Michelle (Donald) Paullus, Chad and Tenille Paullus, Leanne and Corrine Gardner, eleven great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Courtney-Winters Funeral Home Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside service to follow. Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in lieu of flowers.

Coordinator The Victim Services program provides support, information and referral to victims of crime and tragedy. We are currently accepting applications for a full time Coordinator (37.5 hours). The Coordinator will work directly under the supervision of the Big Country Victim Services Board and in cooperation with the RCMP Liaison Officer. The Coordinator will provide program administration, volunteer administration/supervision, special events coordination and the provision of direct services to victims of crime and trauma. This is a “highly confidential” position that will require some evening and weekend hours. A valid driver’s licence and use of your own personal vehicle will also be required.
