In February, I had the opportunity to attend the Annual President’s Forum, which was held in Phoenix, Arizona. Along with the National Board, 48 chapter presidents came together at The Ritz Carlton to connect and share best practices. The weather was great (70+ degrees!) and Arizona North Chapter President, Jewell Blair of Allied ASID, was a great host for the weekend. Personal connections and lifelong bonds were made and I have ASID to thank.

Also, I would like to thank everyone who attended our Annual Meeting in January. Cosentino was a gracious host (thank you Patty ans Alex!) and our committee, headed by Beth Lindsey, pulled together a great event. It was also a treat to have Randy Fiser, our CEO, speak about the state of Interior Design and

The Social Network By Suly Weissman, Interior Designer - Allied ASID We said goodbye to 2014 with style and Latin flare; with so many new faces, it is hard to believe that we have grown so much in such a short period of time. Our last toast for the year was held at Batanga which had a fantastic turnout! The staff treated us like family with a gorgeous backdrop of downtown Houston and a live Latin trio playing inside. Paired with the event, the ASID committee and volunteer sign up was very successful. So many volunteers wanting to sign up and help us grow the chapter was very moving. Thank you all!

February was amazing – PAX Americana was a tremendous success! A HUGE thank you to Shepard Ross for spending time with us; he talked about his place and his love for the Montrose neighborhood, the history of the space and how it came to be PAX. The food, the ambiance and of course our crowd was all first class. We couldn't have asked for better patio weather either, it was fantastic. Thank you to our sponsors and my army of volunteers - I couldn't do this without you all. Mark your calendars for March 11th – our next event will be held at Julep Houston. Stayed tuned for the details in your email, follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. I look forward to seeing you all next month!

So Here’s the Thing… By Crystal Reeves, ASID, RID I know, I know…who wants to talk about Ethics? Just by mentioning the word I probably put most of you to sleep or at the very least, you stopped reading already. Did you know that ASID national can help you out in sticky situations? Below, I have a hypothetical situation with a definite answer…. The “Sitch”: After months of working on a kitchen remodel design with the client, the designer has turned over drawings and specs and building is underway. Throughout the project the designer, an ASID member, remains in close contact with the builder, who is also an ASID member, to address issues that come up. Once the project is completed, the designer takes photographs and allows the builder to use it for an ad. In the ad, the builder does not mention anything about the designer but suggests that it is his work. Is this the right thing to do? The Facts: According to our ASID Code of Ethics, no. 2.0 Responsibility to the Public 2.4 Members shall not engage in any form of false or misleading advertising or promotional activities.

The problem is not that he used the photos, assuming the designer/photographer gave him permission, it’s that he gave credit to the wrong person. The Remedy: Call the builder and ask him about it. Give him the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes offenses are unintentional and can easily be worked out through a phone call. Yes…I said phone call…not email… We all love emails but our tone and intent can often be misunderstood and at least for the initial contact, it should be a warm fuzzy voice on the other line. If this doesn’t resolve it, you can file a formal complaint with national on their website. Search the site for “Ethics” then click on the link that says to “view procedures for filing a complaint.” Then ASID national takes it from there. Gooooooo National!!!!! (Insert happy cheerleader leap here).

There is a difference in a Schenck f loor. Just ask our customers.

ASID TGCC is Taking Students to METROCON! By Crystal Reeves, ASID, RID Last year, ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter took 17 ASID students, 6 designers and 5 underwriters to Metrocon in Dallas and it was such a success that we are doing it again! This year, we are taking 34 students, 8 designers and 8 underwriters! Dates of the event are Thursday, August 13 – Friday, August 14. Student sign-ups begin March 31. Students, designers and underwriters who attended last year considered the experience priceless. We had trivia games, one on one time between designers and mentors, an amazing dinner Thursday night, portfolio review/lunch at Metrocon and much more. However, although the experience is priceless, the cost to take 50 people is NOT. Items included in this trip are hotel, transportation, food and conference fees. With that said, we need designers and IP members to help underwrite the event. There are three levels with various prices and benefits listed below – spaces on top two levels are limited due to accommodation availability. Title Underwriter - $3000 • One Spot: (Spot is taken by Ferguson - includes Thermador, DXV and Victoria & Albert) • Attend event with ASID TGCC (including overnight hotel stay, transportation, food, basic conference costs) • Participate in Underwriter Trivia Contest/Scavenger Hunt and/or other games. • Networking with all attendees

• Give tour of company booth at Metrocon with entire group • Recognition at ASID TGCC Awards (3 slides – one shared with all underwriters and two separate slides only for Title Underwriter) • Recognition on all ASID TGCC Metrocon media /marketing materials • Flyer/Product info in goodie bags Gold Underwriter - $1000 • Six Spots: (One spot is taken by Scene One Interiors. There are 5 more available) • Attend event with ASID TGCC (including overnight hotel stay, transportation, food, basic conference costs) • Participate in Underwriter Trivia contest • Networking with all attendees • Recognition at ASID TGCC Awards (1 slide shared with all underwriters) • Recognition on all ASID TGCC Metrocon media /marketing materials • Flyer/Product info in goodie bags Silver Underwriter - $500 • Unlimited Spots • Recognition at ASID TGCC Awards (1 slide shared with all underwriters) • Recognition on all ASID TGCC Metrocon media /marketing materials • Flyer/Product info in goodie bags Another way Designers and IP members can participate is to donate to the we hand out on the trip. Last year we gave an insulated lunch bag with ASID logo, notebook and pen with ASID logo, mini architect scale and snacks. It would be great to have even more great things that the students could really use…like a tape measure or mini architect scale. Or things they don’t really need but really love…Toblerone chocolate, $10 Starbucks card for a few of “lucky” bags , cookies, pistachios, etc. Please contact Crystal Reeves, ASID, RID to reserve your spot and/or donate for swag bags. Phone: 713-269-4505 Email: Crystal@CLRdesignservices.com Thank you all for your continued support of our students! See page 25 for additional details, or move the 2 pieces next to each other.

METROCON 2015 ASIDTGCC Student Application By Crystal Reeves, ASID, RID The ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter (ASID TGCC) is again encouraging student participation in the upcoming Metrocon 2015 Expo and Conference. The experience gained by participating in this expo and conference is one that all design students would greatly benefit. Last year was the first year our chapter took students to Metrocon and the students, as well as designers and underwriters attending, thought the experience was priceless. Our chapter is in the process of selecting students to participate in Metrocon 2015, which will be held in Dallas, Texas at the Dallas Market Hall. The dates for the expo and conference are August 13-14, 2015. (We will leave the morning of Thursday August 13 and return the evening of Friday, August 14). Space is limited to only 34 ASID student members. The entire cost of the trip will be covered including overnight hotel stay, transportation, food, & regular conference costs. The local student application process will be completed by lling out an application, on the next page, and submitting it to Crystal Reeves, ASID, Metrocon Committee Chair. (Contact information is on the application on the following page.) The applications will be reviewed by our chapter’s Metrocon Committee and acceptance will be based on application information provided. The final acceptance of this year’s participants will be announced as described below. Please note: Do not register directly with www.metrocon.info - ASID TGCC will only pay for members registered through our ASID TGCC application process. Students must attend all events with ASID TGCC. What is Metrocon? For information about Metrocon’15, visit the following link: www.metrocon.info/index.php/about/
