ASID SAN DIEGO CHAPTER | ISSUE I 2021 - 3 -

President’s Message Welcome to March 2021, This issue of our ASID San Diego digital magazine celebrates the incredible talent and vision of our chapters’ Designers and Student Designers. Well over a year ago, before Covid, a Design Excellence Awards leadership team was formed to lay the groundwork for our Design competition. Immediate Past President Bertha Hernandez, Anne Kellett, President 2014-2015 ASID and Judy Hallberg ASID, President 2002-2003 joined forces and kicked off a year long process to bring the work of our design community to be submitted for consideration. It was a terrific turnout of design applications – 51 entries! These entries showcased the great work that is being done in our community, whether professional designers or students. Thank you! Judges from around the nation and Canada reviewed the work, gave a numerical ranking and in the pages that follow you will see the recipients of these awards. Of course, we had to make the big pivot with Covid still being a factor in our gatherings and switched to conduct our award ceremony online. Thankfully, MinoPro Media stepped up once again and saved the Award’s presentation in a virtual experience. Our friends at DuChateau hosted our event, online of course, and were generous in offering to send all attending Designers sample boxes of their beautiful line of hardwood flooring. We had a wonderful evening because of MinoPro Media, our great emcee Alan and even cameos from Thom Filicia and Martyn Lawrence Bullard. I’m grateful to all our Volunteers with whom I work daily. Every discussion is about “How can we build connections within our Design Community and how can we CARE for our Design Community”. We have much to share. We are busy working on our design partnership with the non-profit Humble Design, creating a vision for a first-ever virtual “Student Career Day”, supporting our Mood Board competition, and launching our regional Community Circles. ALL these efforts are about building connections between our Designers, Students & Industry Partners. Your ASID San Diego volunteer leaders are working on many and different ways to create connections and opportunities for each of us to give and receive support within our Design Community. You will find all the details on our website – CASD.ASID.org. Sincerely, Suzi OBrien, Allied ASID, MSW, Green Building Professional President, ASID San Diego 2020-2021

Chef Bob and his favorite food fan, wife Trisha, were ready for a kitchen update. Trisha showed photos of clean white walls, natural design elements, and rich wood flooring. Inspiration photos showed a curve over the range, an updated fireplace, and subtle textural details. Bob, a true culinarian, showed the commercial range he coveted. Hardwood floors replaced the parquet, and rift cut cabinets hold all the kitchen necessities. The backslash is hand crafted tile and the counter was fabricated from concrete-looking quartz. A glass door created access to the side yard and brought natural light into that part of the room. Floating shelves balance out the new door and provide display for their collected treasurers. The essential support beam was unwrapped to expose the wood and supporting hardware. our favorite moment? When Trisha sent us a picture of a smiling Bob preparing his first meal in the new kitchen.

Mark Stocker Towering hundreds of feet above the San Diego cityscape, this open-plan condominium takes inspiration from its dramatic million-dollar coastal views. Design intent was to create a tranquil sanctuary that complement the panoramic vistas of the sky and sea extending out to the horizon. Cool hues and a blue-centric color palette are anchored by modern design touches found in the multi-tone cabinetry, highgloss furniture, light fixtures, and water-fall edge quartz counters. The culmination of exquisite finishes, custom furnishings, and whimsical accessories truly represent unifying harmonious interior spaces with the unique experience of coastal high-rise living. This is the youthful spirit of San Diego captured and expressed in a home.

NEXT LEVEL LEADERSHIP By Julia A. Molloy | BOLD – Business of Luxury Design In an age of the rising female, the churning underbelly of tired leadership models and the unending demands of the small creative business, it is no wonder leadership itself is being reborn in the hands of softer souls. Over the last two decades I’ve witnessed first-hand the challenges involved with building and leading a strong design firm. I’ve had a first-row seat to countless business owners embracing a next level leadership style and it is an inspiration to say the least. The role of the Principal Designer is extremely difficult. First, interior design is one of the most complicated business models in existence. Once more, Principal Designers are creatives. Over 80% of the hundreds of designers I have worked with are ‘Intuitives’ in the Myer’s Briggs personality test and almost 60% are ‘Feeling’ dominant. This means that the emotionally detached, sardonic ‘Devil Wears Prada’ leadership style will never be authentic for them. So how is it then, that they are able to build thriving firms and garner the loyalty and respect of those they lead interact with? How do they hold dominion without power games and navigate the often rough and tumble landscape of board rooms, celebrity clients and construction sites with confidence? Every leader brings their own history, strengths, flaws and personality quirks, but there are three traits that all of these new breed leaders have, without exception. I believe these characteristics win out over traditional leadership techniques and Machiavellian strategies of old, and it’s changing the hearts and minds of the world, one interaction at a time.

THEY RENEGOTIATE UNSPOKEN CONTRACTS AS NEEDED We all have unspoken contracts. I do the cooking and you keep the cars clean, or you don’t mention my lack of organization and structure as your boss and I won’t mention that you spend too much time on personal texting while at work. Next level leaders are keenly aware of the unspoken agreements they are engaged in. When they find that an arrangement is no longer healthy for themselves or the collective whole, they do not hesitate to renegotiate as needed to bring the situation or relationship back into alignment with their values. As we all lean into our own leadership style, this evolution causes us to examine for ourselves our own stance. What areas of ourselves have we yet to embrace? What conversation is needed and what unspoken contracts are no longer working? As business evolves into a more collaborative and integrated modality in today’s world, the leaders who run them are no longer required to dissect out feelings and intuition. In fact, emotional intelligence and a softer leadership style is being embraced with great effect. This is good news for the creative leaders dominating the world of design who lead with their hearts. Authentic and spirit based, this next level leadership is reshaping the world of leadership and leading us all toward a healthier workplace and industry. .

RADICAL SELF-ACCEPTANCE The first of these traits is radical self-acceptance. This does not imply perfection in any sense. What it does indicate is the ability to be radically honest with possession of a heightened level of self-awareness and selfacceptance. This means shame-based belief systems, narratives and baggage have been identified and properly disposed of and self-love copiously administered. The result is a level of self-assuredness that cannot be faked. It shows in the way they seem to never take anything too harshly and see the perfection in their imperfection. Their core is strong and the world seems to simply succumb to their unshakable confidence.

THEY EMBRACE FIERCE CONVERSATIONS Have you ever had a sentence, a conversation or a deep truth that you couldn’t seem to force from your lips? Yes, we all have and learning the skillset and framework around identifying and verbalizing the unsaid, is a leader’s superpower. This gift allows these leaders to not only perceive the unspoken, but to formulate a way of bringing it to the surface in a method that facilitates growth. Sometimes painful, but always transformative, these conversations allow no one to hide, including themselves. This means that every lesson the world is offering is fully absorbed. It also means that when something isn’t in alignment or an unproductive pattern is emerging, they will not avoid a potentially uncomfortable confrontation, but courageously embark on that learning journey with the people in their lives. SO CAL LIVING An under-utilized closet is converted into a necessary second-level laundry room.

In approaching an angular space, incorporating full-size laundry equipment, a sink, water bowl for the dogs, countertop space for folding and hanging space for drying presented a few challenges.

The previous opening to the master bath is closed off with new access from the hallway. The cabinetry layout ensures maximum storage while maintaining ample clearance for function and efficiency. Utilizing the longest wall for equipment offered full surface space with short hanging above and a tower functions as designated tall hanging with the dog’s water bowl built-in below. The utility sink is on the opposite wall providing an efficient work flow with plenty of landing spaces for folding, ironing and the like.

Keeping with the feel of the home, soft blues and whites grounded with a geometric floor create a fun, playful space for the homeowners’ laundry experience.

Parkinson’s presents many challenges, thus it was my challenge to create an accessible yet attractive master bathroom.

Eliminating the tub and enlarging the shower, the curbless transition is clear of obstacles. Large anti-slip porcelain tiles connect the space. A built-in shower seat, stand-alone bench, grab handles and handheld shower make showering easier.

The natural pallet is peppered with aqua and green. Highercontrast materials make flooring-to-wall, and cabinet-to-counter,

more distinct. Large, glass walltiles add visual space. Details like flush installation of drywall, a filter faucet at the sink and room for walker wheels were not overlooked.

Wall scones, recessed lights and LED strip lighting create modern functionality as natural light floods through the skylight.

The circular window challenged me yet gave me the opportunity to use stainglass. It ultimately became my favorite element and a design signature,.

This six acre estate inspires serene relaxation surrounded by breathtaking views. The retreat encompasses a 3-bedroom, 3 1/2bathroom home, an expansive outdoor living area with an infinity pool, and horse stables. A spacious home gym and luxury doggie shower are client favorites. It was essential to the clients that they be surrounded by beautiful, unusual design elements. Their getaway integrates multiple materials inspired by the land, particularly gabion columns and walls. Overscale sculptural lighting throughout the home makes an artistic statement. Built on one level, the architecture asserts its bold personality with carefully considered massing and strong geometry. A drop down ceiling with a floating effect defines the entryway, which extends 30 feet to a dramatic great room open to a vast panoramic view of rolling hills beyond. The clients love to entertain family and friends and share the indoor/outdoor lifestyle their stunning home invites.

The clients are a family of four and are avid art collectors. They are particularly drawn to Franz Kline’s monochromatic color palette. The design concept reflects Kline’s black and white paintings combined with a variety of texture to embody the artist’s expressive style and energetic line use. The overall scope of the project includes space planning and FF&E selection.

The main design challenges are incorporating spaces for the whole family, as well as, a place to entertain their many guests. The kitchen, dining and living room will be the heart of the home, spacious with plenty of seating for all of their company and a large chef’s kitchen to cater to their love of cooking. A downstairs office will be a quiet place for working from home and an upstairs music and art room will be the kid’s space to create.

WINE BAR & STORE In a space with an area measuring around 2,500 square feet, this project had to include a wine bar, lounge, wine store, and spaces needed to run the business. With this in mind, I created a distinctive separation between the employee-only side and the customer side.

Besides the space being practical, the interiors had to be warm, inviting, and elegant. Mostly traditional style is enhanced by an added coffered ceiling. The lighting design was an important part of the project. To add elegance, warmth, and visual interest I placed different types of light fixtures. Elegant crystal chandeliers illuminate the important features of each space. Graceful wall sconces add light where needed, and linear light fixtures add a touch of contemporary style to a mostly traditional space. The thought is that the space planning and design choices create a space that would work perfectly for the client and customers.
