Many of you have heard me quote that to stay competitive and vibrant we had to make significant changes to the course of the Titanic. Those changes started a few years ago and will continue in the years to come. Our National organization also recognized the need for change and introduced ASID 2.0. Together with the support of our Sponsors, committee chairs and volunteers, the ASID TGCC Board of directors has worked hard to set the course for smooth sailing ahead! All of this could not have been

In fact, so much so, that this program caught the attention of our National Chapter at this year’s Chapter Leadership Conference in Los Angeles! Way to go!!! Starting this year, if you are on Social Media, look for and click on the hashtag #ASIDTGCC14 to see what’s happening!

Each year, we review our Strategic Plan to measure our successes as well as areas for improvement, and this year is no different. Celebration 2014, an Evening to Remember! By all accounts this year’s Celebration: The ASID Awards Gala was a huge hit! The event was held at Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles, where guests walked the red carpet, posed for pictures with Joan Rivers and Johnny Depp lookalikes and toured the full studio campus. The actual awards ceremony took place inside the state-of-the-art Paramount Theater and was followed by desserts, cocktails and dancing. The event also featured a silent auction, hosted by the ASID Foundation, with design-centric items that attendees could bid on via smartphone throughout the night. The auction raised more than $26,000, which will help fund future research grants and public programs focused on the impact of interior design. The evening was a “true Hollywood experience."

The 2014 Chapter Leadership Conference If you have not heard of the Chapter Leadership Conference, CLC, then let me tell you about the fun that you are missing! Current and upcoming 2015 ASID TGCC Board members had an opportunity to attend this 3-day event, held in Los Angeles. CLC took place in conjunction with the Dwell on Design show, so attendees were able to experience both events. Board members get in depth training for their roles and responsibilities, as well as the leadership skills needed to promote a successful Chapter. The conference is a wonderful opportunity for team building with your fellow Board members. This could be witnessed by our Team Building challenge of creating the tallest freestanding structure with only spaghetti, string, two feet of tape, and a marshmallow to top it off. The TGCC team tied with another team for top honors – way to go team! Another benefit of attending CLC is the learning and sharing of best practices with other Chapters in the breakout sessions – each session catered specifically to that Board Members role. We also learned more about the state of ASID and the direction in which it is going, truly embracing all forms of Design such as Workplace, Healthcare, Retail, Hospitality, Education, Residential, and Institutional. Technology and Social Media will play a big part in the continued growth of ASID. If you aren’t already following the TGCC on Facebook and Twitter, please take the time to do so. All in all, CLC was a fantastic opportunity to connect with those from our own Chapter, other Chapters, and ASID National members. Want an opportunity to attend yourself, get involved with ASID – join a committee and become a Board member. Help shape the future of the Society! Next year’s CLC will be held in Boston on July 16 – 18, 2015.

Rachelle Schoessler Lynn, Chair and Randy Fiser, President and CEO discuss the icon “Representing all aspects of the interior design profession”.

Support for Chapter Websites Moving to National Office As the ASID national staff work to fix and rebuild the central ASID website, they also will work to move chapter website maintenance to the national office, as announced at the Chapter Leadership Conference in June. This change is intended to centralize and improve the support to, consistency across and integration among all chapter websites. ASID CFO Rick Peluso is working through the details and timetable for the transition.

We thank you for your patience during this time of transition. ASID Members dancing to Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”

We love METROCON! Many, many thanks to our Underwriters, without whom there would have been no trip!! FERGUSON - Everything! VICTORIA + ALBERT - Hotel AMERICAN STANDARD - Dinner at The Meddlesome Moth THERMADOR - Transportation LEGRAND/ADORNE COLLECTION - Lunch at MetroCon DATA SOURCE/ASID TGCC/CLR DESIGN SERVICES - Goodie Bags

On the bus ride, designers, IPs and students got to chat about the industry, what to know when you get out of school, ins and outs of client relations and we even created a trivia contest about each of the Underwriters. Fabulous gift cards were awarded to each student winner. We received email after email from students about how much fun they had and how they can’t wait to go next year! As a designer on the trip, I truly enjoyed pouring into these students - they all have bright futures with ASID!! Until next year….

On August 14 and August 15, 2014 our chapter took 20 students, 5 designers and 5 IP Underwriters to this ground-breaking regional expo and conference organized by the Texas Chapter of ASID and the Texas/Oklahoma Chapter of IIDA. MetroCon focused on introducing the latest in industry products and innovative ideas to the Southwest region’s communities. In addition to the trade show and CEUs, a new Student Programming area was offered. It provided portfolio and resume reviews, one-on-one discussions with designers and companies who hire and/or work with interior designers, and more. A special thanks to Lynne Jones, Janus Lazrus and Debra Sabrsula who participated on the design panel.

To make the 2014 ASID Student career Day a success, the steering committee is seeking underwriters from the architecture and interior design industry, as well as design professionals to help us make this event truly special for our regional students attending. As an industry partner, in the community, your involvement would highlight the importance of design education and encouragement for students in supporting their educational goals. We hope that you are interested in joining our student day efforts by demonstrating your commitment to design education. Simple events like this can provide the confidence a student needs to continue his or her educational goals and graduate, to begin a successful career. We will be following up with you within the next days to discuss your interest. Please feel free to reach out to the steering committee with any questions by contacting Kevin Hamby, RID, ASID at kevin.hamby@hccs.edu, and we look forward to your involvement in Student Career Day, and thank you in advance for your investment in the next generation of leaders for our industry.

We've lost our sister, our aunt and our friend. Judy Jean Steinkamp was born in Waco, Texas, October 13, 1949 and peacefully passed away at her home in Houston on September 4, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Steinkamp Jr. and Mary Robin Benton Steinkamp. She is survived by her sisters Linda Roach, Jerry Kaluza and husband Kelly, and Robin Neel. Judy also leaves behind nieces and nephews: Natalie, Paul, Jack, Luke, and Logan Janik; Christie, Chris, Megan and Cotton Dull; Jennifer King; Jami Alford, Joy Barlow, Kirsten Perkins, Alexandra and Nicolette Alford; Jonathan, Joshua, Emily, Benjamin, and Bryan Neel. Judy was "Tia" to her youngest nephew, Cotton. Judy was a graduate of Needville High School. She attended Baylor University, University of Missouri and graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in interior design. Judy was known for her creativity and worked in the interior design field for over 40 years. Through her Houston-based business, Judy Steinkamp Interior Designs, she touched many lives and transformed countless spaces. She was a member of the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners and the AISD. Judy also had a passion for writing and singing. She enjoyed penning plays and songs when she was not designing. Judy continually made it her life goal to improve herself whether it was mind, body, or spirit. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.

Professional Development By Janus Lazaris, Allied ASID The Professional Development Committee is very excited looking forward to the ASID new year filled with informative and fun programs. Starting early fall we will host a leadership workshop for all Board Members and Committee Chairs. This is an afternoon when we not only get to know each other better, but also learn how best to lead our community and businesses better. The Student Career Day is scheduled for November 7th where students will learn how to take their career as Interior Designers to the next level. There will be speakers on many current topics as well as time to really visit with professional designers. The event will conclude with awards and scholarships. Many other events are planned for ASID student designers this coming year, such as Metrocon, and "Adopt- A -Student". We are lucky to have Sari KarkiRajabi heading this committee again for the new year. The ASID TCGC Annual Meeting is scheduled for early February and follows last year's great success. This year's meeting promises to be even more fun and informative. We are honored to have Randy Fiser, ASID National Executive VP & CEO as our speaker addressing the current state of our industry. Beth Lindsey continues on as our Chairperson of this event for 2015. Shundra Harris is leading her team on the Showhouse committee in creating an event that will showcase the talents of our many Designers and Industry Partners. Look for this event in the Spring. We will fill the year in with important CEU’s which help us all keep current and allows us to network with other Designers and Industry Partners. This year we have Marie Dang as Chairperson for CEU’s.

Social Networking Thank you for another successful and fun year for the ASID Social Network! Big thanks to all the members of my Social Network committee for all their hard work - Crystal Reeves, Evan Soltoff, Dana Soltoff, Glenda Loza, Judy Bonica and Suly Weissman! Suly will be taking over as Chair, and we are looking for a Co-chair so please come join the fun! This is going to be another great year!

Big thanks to Joe Thomas with Stark for a great event in June at Mongoose vs. Cobra. He is an investor there and took care of us for the evening. July was hot, but our event at KUU was very cool! Si Dang with Andria Design

KUU

spoke about the design concept and build-out of this great space. Enormous thanks go out to Leonard Ledford of White Glove Storage & Delivery for underwriting this event. What a treat!

August’s event at Vincent’s brought out some people we hadn’t seen in a while. A knowledgeable speaker on the wonderful history of this restaurant and what has turned into a little Italian villa made for a great tour and event. September will be at La Casa del Caballo. This space is red hot and we have our own area upstairs, so it is sure to be a success.

October 29 will be our fabulous Halloween party at Ferguson. Get your creative juices flowing and put together a costume for our killer costume contests! Stay tuned for another great event in November and keep up with us on Facebook.
