Dear Members, Is it true that the more you have to do, or is it the older you are, the faster time goes by? Well this quarter has flown by like a 747! I've networked and shared an excellent dinner with IIDC and IIDA, learned about the need for conservation of antiquities, and about my right to practice, and promoted our Find a Designer program at a premiere consumer show at Navy Pier. I was inspired by new ASID members over a gourmet lunch, signed a contract with a Chicago luxury magazine as our exclusive media sponsor, and helped plan our best Celebration of Design event ever. I found that Neocon is totally worth the trip to the Mart – whether you are a residential or commercial designer – dined on a lunch prepared by one of our premiere Industry Partners, and heard inspiring words from both our national President, Rachelle Schoessler Lynn, and our CEO Randy Fiser, along with gaining their total support. I drank delicious drinks by mixologist Amy Probasco of Girl and the Goat while fundraising for my right to practice, danced under the crystal ball while networking with the coolest people, and attended the AIA Global Inclusion event where diversity in design was the subject of the evening; and I’ve just totally enjoyed representing ASID Illinois. Volunteering has made such a difference in my life. I've grown as a professional and as a person. I’ve been a part of some really great events and opportunities, have met some great people, and have enjoyed giving back to my profession after 23 years of it giving to me. I would not have done all these things, including meeting fashion designer Maria Pinto - very cool - if I’d stayed home. My advice? Be a part of something bigger and volunteer. Many thanks to the GE Monogram Design Center, the Conservation Center, Oscar Isberian, Dan Garcia from Jagoli, Ted Glasoe Fine Art Photography, Patricia Mace from LeGrand North America, Modern Luxury-CS Interiors, Jase Frederick-ASID IL Communication Director, Rachelle Schossler Lynn-President ASID, Randy Fiser-CEO ASID, Frederick Miller-IIDC President, Valerie Jardon-Past President IIDA, Rick Gilman from Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP, Tom Stringer, and Krystl Loiterman-ASID IL Director at Large. You have made my quarter worth it!

Interior Technology Evolves to Consider Aesthetics By Melina Garza, ASID, Jase Frederick, ASID and contributor Ken Walker of Artisans Electronics Group

It is nearly impossible to ignore how technology permeates our everyday lives. It has enhanced our routines by providing information at our fingertips, enabling us to stay connected and manage immediate control of bank accounts, personal profiles and playlists. As interior designers driving aesthetic harmony in various environments, integrating technology into design is often an afterthought. It is not tangible and frequently invisible, yet can increase the comfort of a home dramatically. If properly implemented, these integrated technologies are seamlessly functional and visually appealing.

The technologies that have evolved over the years are complex and often require the guidance of a home technology consultant so they can properly enhance the end users’ lifestyles. For interior designers, it is best to have a high-level understanding of what advantages technologies can offer in order to decide if a project requires a consultant. This expert can make appropriate recommendations that work with the overall design strategy. When seeking out a consultant, it is best to work with an individual who is certified within the home technology industry. These

Integrating Technology: The Elephant in the Room Designers often face challenges when confronted with large, bulky electronic devices that are “non-negotiable for technophile clients. Though not an entirely new premise, Ken Walker of Industry Partner Artisans Technology Group recently collaborated with a designer on the north shore to cleverly hide a large television above a fireplace. Third party control systems are commonly used to sync these together so a user can access them from one point. The controls are designed to be intuitive in order to provide greater benefit to the consumer.

This style of automated control is also appealing because of the energy savings that can be realized by installation. Climate control and lighting use the most energy in a home by implementing “managed timed events” motorized shades, for example, can be scheduled to lower when exterior temperatures rise, which can assist in keeping the home cooler. NeoCon Luncheon 2014 a Resounding Success The ASID Illinois Chapter’s annual NeoCon Luncheon was held this year on Monday, June 9 at the beautiful new GE Monogram Design Center on the first floor of the Merchandise Mart. GE Monogram Executive Chef Jon Liddell and his staff created a variety of innovative, healthy menu selections for members to enjoy while they recharged, refreshed and reconnected with colleagues. “Attendance was off the charts as ASID members from across the country attended this creative networking luncheon produced by ASID IL Committee Chair Karen Riordan, Allied ASID,” says ASID Illinois Chapter President Janet Davidsen. “Delicious food and beverage pairings sparked conversations between attendees. The ASID National Chapter showed their support with Rachelle Schoessler Lynn, National ASID President, and Randy Fiser, CEO, speaking at the event. “ “At the GE Monogram Design Center, we love partnering with ASID to host events that bring their members together,” said Rebecca LaRocque, Marketing Development Manager for Architects/Designer for GE Appliances. “The NeoCon luncheon was an amazing opportunity for GE Monogram as an Industry Partner to meet so many wonderful ASID members from all over the US.” As is the annual tradition, ASID also arranged for a Student Portfolio Review by leading industry firms and designers. This year’s event attracted such a large and talented pool of students seeking professional advice that the allotted time was not enough to accommodate all of them. Fortunately some practitioners – including several ASID members – remained to impart their wisdom and guidance to the next generation of design professionals. The ASID Illinois Chapter and all attendees would like to extend our warmest thanks to GE Market Development Manager Rebecca LaRocque, Executive Chef Jon Liddell, and the entire GE Monogram Design Center staff for sponsoring and hosting such a successful event! We appreciate our Industry Partners!

ASID Illinois President-Elect Carol Stolt, Allied ASID, greets an attendee at the Students and Emerging Professionals Career Panel and Portfolio Review at NeoCon 2014. The annual event pairs working practitioners with students and emerging pros for portfolio review, networking and career advice.

Using Social Media: A Designer’s Insights and Perspectives By Cynthia C. Smith, Allied ASID The many Social Media tools available (many for free) to small business owners today are a great resource for Interior Designers. What we do is a visual, tactile experience, but that is not to eliminate the power of images and content we can self-publish on the Internet to a vast and ever-expanding audience. Clients want to be inspired with exciting ideas on how to create beautiful, functional spaces in their homes and workplaces. Social Media and Interior Design are a near perfect match, because designers can connect with potential clients utilizing images of and ideas about the work we produce. Once you understand and become comfortable with the various interfaces (Twitter, Facebook, Houzz, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Etc.), you unleash a powerful and effective marketing tool to add to your kit, and opportunities to share are limited only by your imagination. When I first started using Social Media outlets to promote my design practice, I was a little apprehensive, because it meant extra work for me; the task of learning new software seemed daunting and overwhelming. Once I conquered the learning curve, however, it became much easier to navigate, and I received almost instant positive results. Not only have I gained more and better clients from reaching out via these networks, also I have learned the nuances of how to engage with my target demographic. My success with these innovative and influential programs is not singular, either; I have heard similar stories from colleagues who have garnered significant returns on the time and energy invested into Social Media marketing. The channels I selected were a natural extension of myself and my portfolio, placed in front of thousands of potential new clients.

Here is advice I have found most beneficial when tackling these challenges: • Pick a specific date and time to do update your Social Media profiles. Keeping a regular schedule formed a successful habit in my office. • Limit “hard sell” business promotions. A softer approach, perhaps with specifically-targeted special offers tend to gain more interest. • Go big and strong! If you have something important to say, say it first and do not “bury the lead” in your posts. • Post updates about yourself and your business. What we do is personal and intimate, and since we are often associated as individuals with our brands and work, it important to know when to set boundaries, and when to blur the lines. • Follow people in your industry, potential clients, current clients, competitors and other business owners. Learn from observing what you think works, and what does not. After all, “Good artists borrow…” At this point, it still surprises me to learn that some of my fellow designers do not have a strong online presence across diverse platforms. While blanketing the Internet with marketing for marketing’s sake does not work in every instance, I encourage you to experiment with the platforms that feel like the most natural extensions of your personality and business. No matter your personal opinions, this technology has arrived and drastically changed the way design professionals and clients collaborate. Those of us who look to the future of our industry see that Social Media is here to stay, and you should join us!

Inaugural Designer Showhouse Sheds Light on Kids in Need By Nathalie J. Siegel, Jase Frederick and Andy Yates As creative professionals, we are often faced with not only the commercial and business challenges of our demanding careers, but also the human component of how design, art and architecture impact the lives of individuals. It is not uncommon that designers yearn to engage in the sphere of ideas and add to the dialogue of improving the lives of others. This desire to help and enhance lives is deeply engrained in our profession, spurring a select few among us to take bold action for values we hold dear.

“We believe Gracious House, and the Designer Showhouse project, will raise awareness of the importance of the home in a unique inner-city context as integral to the wellbeing and positive nurturing of children,” Sielaff says. Sponsors who have signed on to support the designer showhouse include Karastan, Chicago Art Source, C2 Paint, Knoll Textiles, The Editor at Large, Brizo, Cosentino, Silestone by Cosentino, Dekton by Cosentino and Fresh Design Studio.

Jim Hmurovich, President & CEO of Prevent Child Abuse America, was honored to join the team and the benefitting entity. "At Prevent Child Abuse America, we firmly believe that we all play a role in the healthy development of children,” says Hmurovich. “Gracious In the spirit of giving back, ASID member House is a perfect example of the unique and Chicago designer M.
