Social Media is not just the future, it is today. Are you interested in a day to allow those who are taking advantage of the social media phenomenon to grow their businesses to mentor those of us who just haven’t grasped the potential it holds? I hope so, because here it comes! The board and ASIDLA Magazine are collaborating to create a social media day allowing our chapter members to share skills and knowledge about the potential for growing their businesses. Also included in the day of learning will be introductions to various apps and programs which are available for project management and design concept presentation. If you would like to participate in the day to share your skills please let us know. We really want to develop a well-rounded day of learning and sharing, culminating in festivities, food and drink. I look forward to working with all of you in creating something special for our chapter. Ideally we will have 2 locations for the event, one in LA and one in the Santa Barbara area. Best Of the Season, and may 2018 be a year of prosperity and inspiration for all! n

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Los Angeles

A

t my October installation at The California Club, I laid out our chapter’s vision for the coming year. Our primary objective is to emphasize programming that offers substantive and valuable learning opportunities for our members. To that end we are focusing on introducing the latest technologies: apps and social media platforms to help keep our businesses on the cutting edge of what’s available from a business and project presentation point of view. (See Cindy’s “Dish” on page 6 for more about this.) Also on the boards is an exciting lecture line-up that we are introducing: our “Master Class Series.” Currently, we are confirming our first guest lecturers with the intention of bringing the best and brightest minds from the design profession to inform and motivate us throughout the year. In January, we have curated several ASID sponsored events in Paris to complement the offerings at the annual Maison et Objet and Deco Off design shows. These will include an informative talk with celebrity designer Timothy Corrigan on “Navigating the French Design Trade;” the third annual pop-up, Ancien et Moderne, with a stellar panel discussion on “The Power of Bespoke Interiors;” a day in the French countryside with an elegant lunch and an exhibit of erotic toile fabrics (who knew?),“L’Amour dans les Toile de Jouy;” all capped off with a regal reception and tour of the glamorous Jean-Michel Frank designed Maison Baccarat. February brings our annual Modernism Week events in Palm Springs. This year we will offer a fresh take on the festival at the Modernism Base “Camp.” ASID will be hosting 30 minute design consultations for the public. Promoted and scheduled via the Modernism Week website, this offering promises to demonstrate the value of the ASID brand and elevate public awareness of our professional presence. To this end, ASID will facilitate a panel on “sustainable design” sponsored by the City of Palm Springs’ Sustainability Committee. Also, for the first time, for three consecutive days, buses will pick up designers and students in West Hollywood for day-trips and shuttle them to three house tours, a CEU, lunch and a farewell cocktail party. This is a great opportunity for those designers and students who find it difficult to schedule a weekend long sojourn to the desert. In keeping with our mission of fostering deeper relationships between our members, we are scheduling “town hall’ type meetings across the vast geographical expanse of our community. The first of these was on November 8th in Palm Springs where we had a lively and engaging exchange with designers and Industry Partners from throughout the Coachella Valley. We continue to encourage and support local events and welcome your input and ideas. Next up will be meetings in Santa Barbara and South Bay locations. Please watch for those announcements.

As most of you know, our current leadership’s motto as a society is, “Design Impacts Lives.” To fulfill that promise, I am thrilled that our chapter is working on two extremely important Pro-Bono projects. First up, are the continuing plans for renovations at the Ronald McDonald House. We are reviewing the ambitious agenda from previous presentations and looking towards implementing initial steps. BJ Peterson, FASID, who has been working with Ronald McDonald House since the 90’s, is once again co-chairing the committee, offering her guidance and expertise. Our second project is the ambitious renovation of interior and exterior spaces for the Autumn Years Senior Services Center at St. Luke the Physician, in the central San Gabriel Valley. This non-profit, non-sectarian, cooperative effort is looking to offer low and minimal cost senior day-care services for seniors, with additional expertise for seniors affected by early onslaught Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Their goal is to eventually accommodate 50 seniors on a daily basis Monday through Friday for mental and physical stimulation, with appropriate nutrition and additional in house social service referral services. Our committee currently includes Douglas Dye, Allied ASID and Cindy Burnett, ASID – both with expertise in healthcare and senior environments; Elaine Morrison, Allied ASID, who has already re-designed the commercial kitchen; and our talented and fearless UCLA Student Member, Jennifer Sholty, who is implementing the physical design of the facility in AutoCad with our guidance. (Someone should snap her up for a staff position before she graduates – she will do your company proud.) Please watch for updates on these projects to see if you have thoughts or talents and are interested in contributing to these on-going efforts. Continuing with our theme that “Design Impacts Lives,” I would like to end with an acknowledgement of the work of one of our posthumous members, Alison Pollack. (Please read Deric Schmidt’s, Allied ASID, and Pam Meyer’s, ASID, loving tribute to Alison on Page 14) ASID has been at the forefront in creating an awareness of “green” design and sustainability issues, and Alison was a true pioneer of this movement: a dedicated and valued member of our community. Her legacy and transformative message of truly “impacting lives” should motivate us all to use our talents and energy to create a better world, especially for those less fortunate. Here’s my wish for 2018 – that it may be a year of transformative action and community building of which we can all be proud. Best wishes for the New Year!

IN MEMORIAM

Remembering Alison Pollack, a Sustainability Inspiration by Deric Schmidt, Allied ASID and Pam Meyer ASID

Alison Pollack, Former ASID – LA member, passed away early in 2017. Alison was one of the founding members and chairperson of the ASID LA Sustainability Committee. She was awarded the ASID LA’s Presidential Citation in 2011 by former chapter president, Pam Meyer ASID, for her tremendous contributions. “The world will not evolve past its current state of crisis by using the same thinking that created the situation.” Albert Einstein, from Alison’s favorite book “Cradle to Cradle”. Although now “green” sustainable design is very much at the forefront of our consciousness as designers and architects, it was just beginning to get on the radar in 2000. Alison was a pioneer who dedicated her professional life towards educating designers and interior furnishings manufacturers about the importance of using non-toxic, locally sourced, sustainable 14

materials. This was evident not only in the name of her company, Earth Friendly Interior Design, but also in that she gave lectures and sat on panels making sure that her message was heard by the greater design community and students in particular. In 2006, 2007 and 2008 as the chair of the Environmental Affairs Committee (now called Sustainability Committee) for ASID - LA Alison supplied the inspiration and coordinated ASID – LA’s pop up showroom at the Pacific Design Center during Westweek which was called the Green Gallery. Alison gave lectures and displayed AKP Design and Suite Baby, her beautiful lines of earth friendly non-toxic furniture there. Never before and never since has the Pacific Design Center dedicated an exhibit purely for environmental non-toxic design. Former chapter president Pam Meyer reflected, “When I became president-

LADESIGN is a Quarterly Publication of the American Society of Interior Designers - Los Angeles Chapter

elect in 2010 one of the first things I did was call Alison and ask her to be the chair of the Environmental Affairs Committee. Alison had so much going on in her own life at the time but she put some projects aside to help me during my presidency. Her support and dedication as chair gave my presidency meaning. Alison created events that year and was always there by my side when needed. I remember her vividly giving a lecture to students at our ASID Student Career Day.” Alison was an inspiration for many in her interior design practice and as a sustainable furnishings designer. Her legacy survives in the form of the current Sustainability Committee which is open to all ASID members to participate in. The mission of the ASID LA Sustainability Committee is: We promote sustainable design through environmental, health, and social responsibility. n

The Harold W. Grieve Educational Fund -presents-

2018 ASID LA STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS Open to all ASID Student Members in the Los Angeles, Palm Springs and Pasadena Chapters who have at least one more semester of classes after Winter/Spring 2018. Entries should be class projects — Commercial or Residential — that show your ability to create innovative concepts, space plan, furnish and decorate. Submissions are to be two-dimensional presentations. Winners will be selected by a committee of ASID LA Chapter designers.

Two $2,500 scholarships + Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. Presentations are to be held on Friday, February 9th, 2018. Contact the chapter office to request an application.

Brief History of Harold W. Grieve, ASID Harold Grieve was originally a production designer and art director for the motion picture industry. He is known for his work on The Thief of Bagdad (1924), The Sea Wolf (1926), The Devil Dancer (1927), and most notably was a principal set designer for the first Ben Hur movie (1925). He became one of the founding members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and remained active all his life in the Academy’s library of historical records. In the late ‘20’s, Grieve gave up working for the studios and set up an interior design practice. In 1930 he married a former star of the silent era, Jetta Goudal, who joined him in the business in 1932. Together they designed interiors for Bing Crosby, Mary Pickford, rooms at the estate of Marion Davies, the interior of Toujours Eblouissante, the Palm Springs estate of French opera star Lily Pons – which was featured in Architectural Digest, the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and the home of Gracie Allen and George Burns. Grieve also did interiors for actress Colleen Moore’s extravagant Castle dollhouse, which famously toured the U.S. during the depression years and which can now be seen on display at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. His passion for interior design gained him great praise from his starstudded Hollywood clientele. Harold Grieve served both as President of Los Angeles Chapter and National President of the then-AID. He was instrumental in merging AID and NSID, giving birth to the professional association we all now know today as ASID – the American Society of Interior Designers. He left us a generous charitable trust to be used for interior design education. The California Los Angeles Chapter of ASID is the beneficiary of this endowment, which is to be awarded as student scholarships and grants for interior design excellence. Entries for consideration are available to any student member of ASID in Los Angeles County and Palm Springs. n 16

IP PERSPECTIVE

The New Rule of Business — Be Authentic.

Live It, In All Aspects of Your Life.

T

By Arnen Alajian, Arto

here is only one Rule. Be you. Authenticity should not be trendy, it trades like gold and has tremendous value in cyber-world relationships. Relationship building is the goal now in this new, detatched digital world, and to do that one must give more value than you take. It is what we do in the analog world. Oh, and by the way, it’s the same place. There are many “hack tricks” that need to be learned in order to make the most of Social Media. For example, an easy way for adding value is to engage with your followers, engage with people you follow, engage with people around a subject. For example, on Instagram, which is in my opinion THE platform for the design business, there are many ways to build relationships. Click the like button (double tap) on pictures of peers, comment on the good work of strangers, send a DM (Direct Message) and give a “that a girl” to an Instagram super star. This all sounds old school but it works in scale. It is like a personal note to a friend, a letter to the editor that gets published or a fan letter to Kelly Wearstler. “I love your work Kelly!” Another quick note on authenticity, it can also be called “your voice.” You hear people say “find your voice.” That can be kind of heady or if you’re literal you miss the real question. What is my definition of authentic? It is the outward manifestation of your “why.” It is the genesis of what you do and how you do it. You also know it as “Your Style.” One thing is for sure, you cannot fake authenticity, at least not for long. n 26

hen you are lucky enough to land a great project—one that will allow you to transform a space and make a real material difference for your client, the tools and resources at your disposal need to have the flexibility to communicate to all the stakeholders. Not only do I need scaled plans and elevations for my contractor and tradesmen, but I also need to effectively communicate what the design will look like for my client, who is understandably eager to get a true feel for the result. The images I am sharing with you were created using a combination of ArchiCad 19 and the Adobe

Creative Suite. Used as part of my toolbox, these powerful software programs allow for the functionality of designing in two and three dimensions simultaneously. In this case, I could cohesively communicate to the owner the cheeky, vintage industrial aesthetic chosen for this boutique apartment while working with the same file to tag, dimension and notate the design drawings for permitting and construction. My preference for this style goes beyond sheer functionality—using scaled renderings that have a “looser” sketched aesthetic allow me to circumvent issues with photorealistic rendering presentations. I find photorealism

has an unsettling quality reminiscent of the movie “Polar Express.” In the end, photorealistic renderings are misleading when the true effects of natural and artificial lighting in a room are nearly impossible to achieve virtually. RESOURCE LIBRARY

PURPLE COW

CREATIVITY, INC.

Don’t count this one out, this cult classic revolutionized marketing by teaching businesses that you’re either remarkable or invisible. It’s one of my personal favorites. Few authors have had the kind of lasting impact and global reach that Seth Godin has had. In Purple Cow, first published in 2003 and revised and expanded in 2009, Godin launched a movement to make truly remarkable products that are worth marketing in the first place. Through stories about companies like Starbucks, JetBlue, Krispy Kreme, and Apple, coupled with his signature provocative style, he inspires readers to rethink what their marketing is really saying about their product. In a world that grows noisier by the day, Godin’s challenge has never been more relevant to writers, marketers, advertisers, entrepreneurs, makers, product managers, and anyone else who has something to share with the world. Plus, you’ll see that his ideas have staying power, as they are as relevant today as ever!

From Barnes & Noble: From Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios, the Academy Award-winning studio behind Inside Out and Toy Story, comes an incisive book about creativity in business—sure to appeal to readers of Daniel Pink, Tom Peters, and Chip and Dan Heath. Fast Company raves that Creativity, Inc. “just might be the most thoughtful management book ever.” Creativity, Inc. is a book for managers who want to lead their employees to new heights, a manual for anyone who strives for originality, and the first-ever, all-access trip into the nerve center of Pixar Animation— into the meetings, postmortems, and “Braintrust” sessions where some of the most successful films in history are made. It is, at heart, a book about how to build a creative culture—but it is also, as Pixar cofounder and president Ed Catmull writes, “an expression of the ideas that I believe make the best in us possible.”

New Edition: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth Godin

Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration by Ed Catmull and Amy Wallace

SMARTER FASTER BETTER

The Secrets of Being Productive in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg From Amazon: A fascinating book that explores the science of productivity, and why managing how you think is more important than what you think—with an appendix of real-world lessons to apply to your life. At the core of Smarter Faster Better are eight key productivity conceptsfrom motivation and goal setting to focus and decision making-that explain why some people and companies get so much done. Drawing on the latest findings in neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral economics—as well as the experiences of CEOs, educational reformers, four-star generals, FBI agents, airplane pilots, and Broadway songwriters-this painstakingly researched book explains that the most productive people, companies, and organizations don’t merely act differently. They view the world, and their choices, in profoundly different ways.

THE E-MYTH REVISITED

Why Most Small Businesses Don’t Work and What to Do About It by Michael E. Gerber From Amazon: An instant classic, this revised and updated edition of the phenomenal bestseller dispels the myths about starting your own business. Small business consultant and author Michael E. Gerber, with sharp insight gained from years of experience, points out how common assumptions, expectations, and even technical expertise can get in the way of running a successful business. Gerber walks you through the steps in the life of a business—from entrepreneurial infancy through adolescent growing pains to the mature entrepreneurial perspective: the guiding light of all businesses that succeed— and shows how to apply the lessons of franchising to any business, whether or not it is a franchise. Most importantly, Gerber draws the vital, often overlooked distinction between working on your business and working in your business. The E-Myth Revisited will help you grow your business in a productive, assured way.

INFLUENCE: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF PERSUASION

GOOD TO GREAT

From Amazon: Influence, the classic book on persuasion, explains the psychology of why people say “yes”—and how to apply these understandings. Dr. Robert Cialdini is the seminal expert in the rapidly expanding field of influence and persuasion. His thirty-five years of rigorous, evidence-based research along with a three-year program of study on what moves people to change behavior has resulted in this highly acclaimed book. You’ll learn the six universal principles, how to use them to become a skilled persuader—and how to defend yourself against them. Perfect for people in all walks of life, the principles of Influence will move you toward profound personal change and act as a driving force for your success.

From Barnes & Noble: Using tough benchmarks, Jim Collins and his research team identified a set of elite companies that made the leap to great results and sustained those results for at least fifteen years. How great? After the leap, the good-to-great companies generated cumulative stock returns that beat the general stock market by an average of seven times in fifteen years, better than twice the results delivered by a composite index of the world’s greatest companies, including Coca-Cola, Intel, General Electric, and Merck. Over five years, the team analyzed the histories of all twenty-eight companies in the study. After sifting through mountains of data and thousands of pages of interviews, Collins and his crew discovered the key determinants of greatness—why some companies make the leap and others don’t. The research team was shocked to discover the type of leadership required to achieve greatness. The Hedgehog Concept (Simplicity within the Three Circles): To go from good to great requires transcending the curse of competence.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Take the Emotion Out of Investing with Dollar-Cost Averaging

O

ne of the best ways to take emotion out of investing is to create a plan and stick with it. One way to do that is through a systematic investment plan called dollar-cost averaging (DCA).1 Dollarcost averaging is a process that allows investors to slowly feed set amounts of money into the market at regular intervals.

Dollar-Cost Averaging: An Example As a long-term strategy, one potential benefit of using DCA is that it can help ensure that your money purchases more shares when prices are low and fewer shares when prices are high. Over time, the result could be that the average cost for the shares may be less than the average share price. Consider the hypothetical example to the right, which assumes you invest $50 per month in an investment for 12 consecutive months, and every month the share price fluctuates a bit. You can see that your $600 total would have bought you 42.5 shares. The average price per share, as calculated by adding up the monthly prices and dividing by 12, would have been $14.25. However, the average cost, as calculated by dividing the total amount invested by the number of shares, would have been $14.12 per share. Over the years, this method could potentially save you a lot of money.

Other Long-Term Benefits of DCA

Lump Sum Investing Versus DCA

In addition, DCA can potentially offer the psychological comfort of easing into the market gradually instead of plunging in all at once. Although DCA does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss in declining markets, its systematic investing “habit” helps encourage a long-term perspective, which can be soothing for people who might otherwise avoid the shortterm volatility of the riskier, but potentially more profitable, investments such as stocks.2 And last, DCA may help you make savvy investment decisions if you stick with it. For instance, if your investment rises by 10%, you will likely post gains because of the shares you’ve accrued over time. But if your shares decline by the same amount, take comfort in knowing that your next investment will purchase more shares at a lower price per share.

Although investing a regular amount each month may be a sound way to develop a regular investing habit, some experts say that it may not be the best way to manage a lump sum of money, such as a 401(k) distribution, a bonus, or an inheritance. As an example, consider the following situation: If you are 65 years old and you receive a $300,000 401(k) distribution and immediately reinvest the entire sum, can you afford to take a chance that the market will drop shortly thereafter? If there’s a sustained market decline, you might be left with a nest egg that is somewhat smaller than you had originally planned on. Over time you might recover your investment, but you have to weigh the consequences of a potential loss before choosing lump sum investing over DCA. Also, remember with lump sum investing the money does not earn anything if it is not invested in the market.

Regular Investing Makes Sense

32

LADESIGN is a Quarterly Publication of the American Society of Interior Designers - Los Angeles Chapter

As a long-term strategy, you may find DCA allows you to feel more comfortable during uncertain markets than the lump-sum investing approach because it eliminates much of the guesswork -- and emotion -- associated with investing. In addition, DCA can help investors take advantage of the market’s shortterm price fluctuations in a systematic way -- by automatically buying more shares when prices drop and fewer shares when prices rise.

By Dennis Shu Dollar-cost averaging involves regular, periodic investments in securities regardless of price levels. You should consider your financial ability to continue purchasing shares through periods of high and low prices. This plan does not ensure a profit and does not protect against loss in any markets. 2 Investing in stocks involves risks, including loss of principal. 1
