Dear Texas Chapter Members, Happy Spring everyone! Spring is one of my favorite seasons of the year aside from seasonal allergies. It's not too cold, and it's not too hot - it's just right. Are you picturing Goldilocks and The Three Bears yet? As I wrote that sentence, it got me to thinking of how ASID is "just right", as well, as ASID truly does represent ALL aspects of the interior design profession. We have members (practitioners and industry partners) that service clients in residential, commercial, hospitality, institutional, model home design & merchandising, and more. And some that do a combination of those. ASID also offer a multitude of meetings, events, and CEU's - free to low cost - that are beneficial to all of our members. It is through many dedicated volunteer hours of design community leaders, as well as the support of our many generous industry partners and sponsors that allows for these events to take place. So the next time you attend an event in your design community, please be sure to thank the leaders for all they do. Also, please show your appreciation to industry partners by specifying/purchasing their products whenever possible. In mid-February, I had the great opportunity to attend ASID President's Forum. ASID leaders from 48 states gathered in Washington, D.C. for two and a half days of leadership growth and policy training, as well as networking opportunities with peers and ASID staff. While I knew prior to attending the conference that ASID is focused on the best interests of its members, as well as the interiors industry as a whole, I am more convinced of this than ever. The main topic during the President's Forum was centered around membership and the value of membership. We discussed membership growth and retention, and what we could do to get/keep our members engaged. We also spoke in length about the perception that ASID is strictly for residential interior designers, and what needs to be done to break this myth. (Just a little fact for you... Did you know that ASID has more commercial interior designers than IIDA has members?) We also recognized that we must engage more with students at an earlier stage, as well as engage more with the emerging professionals and practitioners that are not involved with any professional organization, to demonstrate the benefits of becoming and remaining actively involved with ASID. ASID is also in the process of developing a "ONE Voice" campaign for all disciplines of interior design. Another idea that was discussed was the possibility of hosting interdisciplinary programs/events. The goal is to create a buzz effect that focuses on professional collaboration, and to position ASID as "the voice" of the interior design profession. ASID has also been and will remain an advocate of the interior design profession by hosting and attending town hall type meetings with various stakeholders to further educate them on the importance of good interior design. The list goes on and on, so keep an eye out for exciting future changes and events. In closing, I would like to challenge and encourage each of you to be our Chapter's advocate. Engage with design students, emerging professionals, fellow design practitioners , and industry partners. Educate them about the benefits of being an ASID member and being involved. Share your story with them. I have found over the years that people connect better when they hear a story and can relate to it. I truly believe the adage "you get out of it what you put into it." I know that has been true for myself and I am thankful for the wonderful connections I've made while being involved - first as a student member, then as an allied turned professional member, to Design Community leader and now as President of our great Texas Chapter. Go forth and engage! Kristy Mastrandonas, ASID, RID ASID Texas Chapter President, 2013-2014

volunteer in Career Exchange, please contact ASID Student Advisory Council member and Austin Design Community Financial Chair Corey Davey, Allied ASID: 979-418-9338 | coreydavey86@gmail.com. Note that all Student Programming will take place on the second day of the show: Friday, August 15, 2014. So Students, put METROCON14 on your calendar NOW, and we will provide updated information as it becomes available.

ATTENDING THE TRADE SHOW & CEUS • Exhibitor fees have increased only 25-cents per square foot over the last five years. • Our members can access 250+ vendors, choose from 50+ classes, and take up to 9 CEUs over two days for only $50. • Attendance fees are the same as they have been since the 2010 show. • The show is organized year-round by only 16 volunteers and two contract workers. • Since 2005, METROCON has raised over $225,000 for the Texas Chapter to fund special programs, scholarships and foundation work.

ASID & IIDA are again offering their members* affordable continuing education. Any member of the two organizations can attend the two-day trade show free of charge with only a $50 flat fee to take any amount of continuing education. Again this year the trade show and CEU registration is online at www.metrocon.info. Continuing education courses, which we anticipate posting on the website by mid-May, will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Online preregistration will open MONDAY, JUNE 2 AT 8AM and will close at 5pm on

We are incredibly fortunate to have such a powerhouse event in our own backyard, but it is easy to take our good fortune for granted. If you think about it, with an incredible value like this, WHY WOULDN’T YOU ATTEND METROCON? So mark your calendars, join your peers and be part of something BIG: METROCON14 Expo & Conference will take place at Dallas Market Hall [2200 Stemmons Freeway, Dallas] on Thursday, August 14 & Friday, August 15, 2014. METROCON will again be held in conjunction with the ASID Texas Chapter’s Legacy of Design Awards Celebration / Annual Meeting, which will take place the evening of Wednesday, August 13.

NEW FOR 2014: DEDICATED STUDENT PROGRAMMING! For the first time ever, METROCON will have a dedicated Student Programming area featuring portfolio & resume reviews, one-on-one discussions with companies who hire and/or work with interior designers, and more. ASID will be implementing its high successful Career Exchange program, which it offers annually at NeoCon and NeoCon East. If you are a Practitioner, Educator or Industry Partner member and would like to

August 1. On-site registration will be available during METROCON14, but an additional charge of $10 will be added to online pre-registration fees. Note: If classes sell out online during pre-registration, class openings may be available on-site due to registrant no-shows, but they cannot be guaranteed.

*IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT MEMBERSHIP: To qualify as a Member and receive discounted tradeshow and/or continuing education pricing, Attendees must be in good standing - i.e., not suspended for non-payment - in the official ASID database or in the official IIDA database ON MAY 1, 2014. If not in either one of these official databases on this date, then the Attendee will not qualify as a Member and will need to pay the nonmember pricing.

EXHIBITING IN THE TRADE SHOW If you cater to interior designers, METROCON14 is the place to be. A significant benefit of ASID Industry Partner membership is reduced convention pricing. Exhibitor registration opened online April 1 at 8am, and a 10’x10’ booth can be purchased for the reduced fee of $475. Green Zone booth upgrades are available at $100 per booth (while available), Premium booth upgrades are available at $150 per booth (while available) and Super Premium upgrades at $250 per booth (while available).

CHAPTER NEWS

Please note that booth sales officially close on June 20, but if your company wants to secure its presence at the show, then do not procrastinate. Last year booths sold out nine days ahead of the official close, and by the time the show took place, we had 17 vendors on a waiting list. A note to the Industry Partners out there who offer residential products and services: Residentially-focused designers want you there! Every year they ask why more of you are not present – especially those from beyond the DFW area who want to do some “one-stop shopping” while they are in the Metroplex. Our members are always looking for new sources, and when you are not there along with other vendors, you are not on their radar. Understand that a great deal of residentially-focused designers attend METROCON every year, and they desperately want you to participate, so plan on being at the 2014 show!

SPONSORING THE EVENT As of this April 9th, only 4 of the 45 METROCON14 sponsorships remain: 1. CEU Ceiling Tiles / Installation [in kind]: The CEU-goers in our packed downstairs classrooms will see your logo when they look up. Plus, enjoy two (2) 10’x10’ booths on us. 2. Notepad [$1,000]: Do it “write” by getting into the hands of all of our attendees. Let them take you home and use you even after the show's over. 3. Directory [$2,500]: With two (2) full-page ads, shout it out and stand out by being the only advertiser in our info-laden Show Directory. 4. Bag Check [$1,000]: Lend a hand to our attendees by helping them store their stuff. You'll be the first thing they see when they walk in the door and the last thing they see on the way out. If you are interested in raising your level of visibility and having all eyes on you, then contact Sponsorship Liaison Amy Snelgrove at sponsor@metrocon.info or 888.633.2112.

DON’T MISS OUT! Never been to our show? Then visit the PRESS page of our official website – www.metrocon.info – to find links to photos from past shows, and be sure to follow us on Facebook – facebook.com/METROCONexpo – and/or Twitter – twitter.com/METROCONexpo – to stay in-the-know and up-to-date. Whether you are an Industry Partner, Practitioner, Educator or Student, there is something at METROCON for you, so plan on joining us for the event of the year. We look forward at greeting you on August 14 & 15!

A Note from Your ASID Texas President-Elect I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I’ve ever looked more forward to warmer weather than I have this year…it’s been way too cold in my opinion! I’m also excited that so much is changing and springing to life! As Randy Fiser pointed out in the recent edition of Icon, “nothing is more important to the success of an organization that its culture, nor is anything more difficult to change”. Luckily with the weather it happens naturally, however, change for us can be very difficult. As I’ve mentioned before, changes are in the works for ASID 2.0. Randy points out, change will at times require soaring inspiration; however I believe that we all need to stretch to encourage change to take place. Change can be uncomfortable for some, it’s the fear of the unknown and oftentimes people like it the way it is…but in order to grow, we must push past our comfort zone. In order for ASID to flourish and grow, we must all engage. You will see a move towards more education, already the first Design to Lead Summit is planned May 2-3 in Atlanta. Membership will also become a stronger focus as we need to work on retaining our current members and attract others. ASID is the only organization that represents all aspects of the interior design profession and together we can lead this industry. Do you want to be part of the passion and motivation to help create ASID 2.0? If so, let’s chat…I’m interested in hearing your input…or join us, there is always room for “change agents”! Robin C. Board Member Highlight

Robin Black The first Texas Chapter ASID board meeting I attended was in Dallas in 1977. I found myself in the company of interior design legends: Tonny Foy, Trish Wilson, Jeannine Bazer, Tommye Pitts Baker, Arlis Ede, Robert Preston Henry, Lucille Payne, LeRoy Vaughan, Ellen Angell, Floyd Davenport, the larger than life interior designer with the black cowboy hat, long handle mustache who rented a cadillac sporting long horns for one of the Texas Chapter events.

Allied Member At the time I was employed in an architectural firm and had not met ASID members from otherparts of Texas. I was impressed with the support and friendship and acceptance extended by my peers at this board meeting in Dallas. I soon realized that ASID members have a common bond in protecting the right to practice, mentoring students, and taking continuing education. Many of the same issues still are present: public recognition of the appellation, acceptance by the architectural community, participation by the membership, and clarification that ASID members are engaged in commercial as well as residential interiors. I have been a member of ASID since it was formed in 1975 and have served on many local and state offices including Texas Chapter President in 2005. I am on the board of TAID. One of the events I organized for San Antonio produced some of the most innovative chairs, tables, and mirrors imaginable from architects, interior designers and creative folks. When the grandfathering by TBAE of Interior designers went into effect and members had tofind 8 hours a year in HSW CEPH credits I found many course presenters. Because of the accessibility and barrier free education requirements required by ASID, IIDA and TBAE , the knowledge I gained from these courses enabled me to write chapter 10 “Interior Design” a 2012University of Texas publication: ‘Independent for Life: Homes and Neighborhoods for an AgingAmerica” co-edited by Henry Cisneros along with Jane Hickie and Margaret Dyer-Chamberlain of the Stanford Center for Longevity, Stanford University. For years of service to the Texas Chapter and the San Antonio Design Community and body of work I was honored with the Texas Chapter Medalist Award in 2012. Awards include Legacy of Design for First Place Specialty Design Seafaring Yacht, and Texas Chapter Merit Award for Industry Partner collaboration on a Bath. My design work has appeared in numerous publications. Before opening my own design firm in 1980, I was with the architectural firm of Ford, Powell and Carson for 10 1/2 years. While with this firm I entered one of their projects, the Wentletrap Restaurant in Galveston, Texas and was awarded the 1980 National ASID Award for Adaptive R euse. I received a Bachelor of Interior Design from Auburn University. Before Auburn I studied liberal arts at the American College in Paris two years. The initials ASID behind one’s name denotes the education, experience, and exam. It is the pinnacle in the interior design profession. This membership is one that should not be taken for granted and kept throughout one’s design career.

At last, a 21st century technology designed for a more efficient home storage solution and improved home value. Auto-Lad is a fully electronically controlled ladder. At the press of a button or of a remote, it’s advanced circuit board allows the electronic unlatching of the panel, its opening, extending and de-energizing of the electric motor when Auto-Lad is fully extended. Depressing the same push button or remote allows retracting of Auto-Lad and when fully retracted, the closure of the panel and it’s automatic re-latching followed by the de-energizing of the electric motor. For high reliability and safety of operation, Auto-Lad has no position sensors but will stop if an obstacle is in it’s way. While designed for a typical attic space, this structurally superior and sophisticated operating ladder can also be used to substitute stairs in a loft to add privacy and additional room space below. reworks Expands to New Orleans By Allison Baron The distinctive and elegant home furnishings and accessories created by reworks, ASID Industry Partner, are now available at a new retail location in New Orleans, Gallery 3954. reworks’ founders Chotsie Gregson and Willem Sypesteyn are both New Orleans natives, and their pieces are described by many— interior designers, colleagues, friends, and clients alike—as welding the classic history of New Orleans to the edgy playfulness of Austin. Gallery 3954, located at 3954 Magazine Street, is owned by Kathy Slater, ASID, and brings to Magazine Street a collection of fine art, lighting, and furniture. “Gallery 3954 is synonymous with our style: elegant, contemporary yet classic, featuring many one-of-a-kind pieces that are treasures to be handed down for generations,” says Willem Sypesteyn. reworks has a collection of its classic and limited edition furnishings including sconces, console tables, pendant lights, and end tables available at Gallery 3954.

STUDENT NEWS

From Interior Design Students to Emerging Professionals By Becky Burros and Gracie Ferreyro, ASID TX Student Board Representatives It’s about that time where students all over the country are about to embark on a new journey and phase in their lives. The transitions between students and professionals seems as if it should be pretty easy, but there is a lot that students have to think about as they begin the job hunting process. The good thing is that the ASID has many tools that we can benefit from as emerging professionals. The first is receiving a major discount when you advance to Allied ASID from Student ASID. Staying connected with ASID is important since it is the largest network of interior design professionals, and let’s you stand out to potential clients and employers. For more information on advancing to Allied ASID go to www.asid.org/content/student-advancement. As an emerging professional it is important to become very involved in your local design community to network and continue learning about the industry, so don’t miss out on the great benefits that ASID has to offer. Now, there are many students that are beginning the job hunting process which can go many different ways, but we have some helpful hints and advice to help anyone looking to find a job. Don’t know where to apply? To start out go to www.asid.org/careers, where you can find a job bank, emerging professional programs, tips for graduates entering the interior design industry and more! Also, ASID events are a great place to network, so be sure to have professional business cards so that you don’t miss out on a great opportunity. When you first initiate interest or contact with a firm, company, or industry partner be sure to send a very well written and thorough cover letter to

market yourself. The cover letter may determine whether the employer will even take a look at your résumé, so be sure to take careful consideration in what it communicates about your value to the company. Since cover letters accompany résumés, be sure to brand yourself and keep everything visually consistent. Résumés are to be kept short and simple, and when sending out your cover letter and résumé, be sure to target specific companies, while it may take longer to do so it will pay off in the end. Sometimes employers ask for your portfolio before asking for an interview, and there are some great tools to do this. You can send them your compiled pdf portfolio, as well as a link to your portfolio with great websites such as issuu.com. Issuu is a platform that allows you to upload your pdf and view your portfolio in a magazine view. Remember to not solely depend on any website for your portfolio, but always have a pdf as well as a hard copy. There are also other great tools to keep in mind while job searching such as online portfolios like Carbonmade, Behance, and Shown’d, as well as professional social networks such as LinkedIn. Before you go to an interview, do some research on the company and know what they’re about, their culture, and what type of work they do. Make sure you know your strengths and weaknesses, (and how you can best describe your weakness as a strength). Look up sample interview questions, and compile a list of questions to ask them as well. Last but not least, dress professional and according to the culture of the company. Now, go get your job! As emerging professionals it is important to remain open minded about where we land our first job, any experience is good experience, so take a deep breath and enter the new world of an emerging interior design professional.
