This tour has a higher physical activity level compared to our normal tours and involves high elevations, plenty of walking, getting on & off trains and some driving on unpaved roads. Passengers must be physically fit and able. Travel protection insurance is highly recommended.

Take a flight to the mountainous State of Colorado for enjoyable scenic train rides, then head into Utah and Arizona to discover Navajos Monument Valley. Travel again by train to The Grand Canyon South Rim and then to Verde Canyon!

Day 1: Our flight arrives in the morning at Colorado Springs, so today we tour the fascinating park known as the “Garden of the Gods”. This 1350-acre parkland is filled with sandstone formations that have been carved by erosion into unusual sculptures. Tonight features a great way to start the trip, we celebrate with dinner and entertainment at the Flying W Ranch. D

Day 2: This morning we travel to the Royal Gorge, a canyon carved out by the Arkansas River. The suspension bridge is the highest in the world and it is here that we experience America's most spectacular rail journey aboard the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. Since 1879, these tracks have followed the winding, tumbling Arkansas River deep within the soaring 1,000-foot granite cliffs of Colorado's grandest canyon. We travel across the Continental Divide and along Wolf Creek Pass to the western village of Durango, once a bustling railroad hub and mining center. Will Rogers described the town as "out of the way and glad of it". We will spend 2 nights here. B D

Day 3: Today should be another special highlight as we board a narrow-gauge train for a ride through the mountains of southern Colorado

Day 3: Today we cross Missouri with a stop in historic St. Joseph, for a visit to the Patee House, a Museum of the west, and the starting point for the historic Pony Express mail delivery. Crossing into Kansas, we overnight in the “Jayhawk State”. B

Day 4: Dodge City has a colorful history, as the town flourished by furnishing supplies to settlers traveling the trail. When the railroad arrived, the town thrived but so did its lawless reputation with 19 saloons and rowdy cowboys. Order was only restored by Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson, the west’s most famous lawmen. We might want to pull out some old episodes of “Gunsmoke” to relive those colorful days, but to get a better feel, we visit Boot Hill Museum. Followed by a special dinner and a performance of the World-Famous Boot Hill Gunfighters and the light-hearted Long Branch Variety Show. B D

Day 5: From Kansas to Nebraska, we begin to follow the famed Oregon Trail along the route of the early settlers of the west. We visit the Archway in Kearney, Nebraska with a great historical exhibit that recounts the story of adventurers who followed the Great Platte River Road and helped to build America. We continue to North Platte for a 2-night stay. B

Day 6: North Platte was the home of Buffalo Bill’s Cody Ranch. In the late 1800s, Cody developed a series of “Wild West” vaudeville shows that incorporated rodeo performances and re-enactments of historical events of the American frontier. He dubbed his slice of Nebraska as “Scout’s Rest,” a name that reflected his career as a civilian scout for the military and his vision of the ranch as a retreat where he could relax and plan for his vast entertainment empire. Today we will be riding with the Wild Bunch, exploring Buffalo Bill’s Ranch, visiting the Lincoln County Historical Museum, and enjoying a Chuckwagon cowboy dinner. B D

Day 7: From the prairies of the west to the towering peaks of the Rocky Mountains signal, we have arrived in Denver, Colorado. BACK ON ROUTE 66

September 19 - October 3 | Trip #17134

Double: $4,099.00 | Single: $5,339.00

Take yourself back to yesteryear and relive the past as we travel on the Mother Road, Route 66 from one end to the other. Discover the quirky, eccentric, and oftentimes crazy sights that still exist today and provide so much joy to those who vacation along the route. Keep humming Nat King Cole as you get your kicks on Route 66.

Day 1: Fly to Los Angeles, California, and check into our hotel for a good night’s rest as tomorrow we hit the Mother Road, Route 66!

Day 2: Diehard old-road fans will be pleasantly surprised to know that Route 66 across Los Angeles still exists, almost completely intact. We make our way to Pasadena and then west into downtown LA, following Figueroa, which in LA lingo is known as a “surface street,” and continue past some fascinating pieces of Los Angeles new and old, including the concrete-lined Los Angeles River and hilltop Dodger Stadium. Now marked by prominent beige road signs reading “Historic Route 66 1935-1964”, old Route 66 follows Sunset Boulevard from the historic core of the city, starting at Olvera Street and the El Pueblo de Los Angeles State Historic Park before winding west to Hollywood. In Hollywood itself, Route 66 turns onto Santa Monica Boulevard then runs past the Cemetery and Memorial Hollywood Forever, where such luminaries as Rudolph Valentino and Mel Blanc are entombed, overlooked by the water tower of legendary Paramount Studios. Continuing west to the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica, old Route 66 follows Santa Monica Boulevard through the heart of West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Walk to the end of Santa Monica Pier for the official start/finish of Route 66. Included dinner in Santa Monica.

Day 3: Today we start our journey East following Route 66 through California and into Arizona. Our first stop is San Bernardino where Maurice and Richard McDonald perfected the burger-making restaurant chain that bears their name. Though the original buildings were demolished decades ago, the location is now home to the unofficial ad hoc First Original McDonald’s Museum! Our next stop is the California Route 66 museum in Victorville, which boasts amongst other quirky attractions, a VW Love Bus complete with hippy wigs, a 1917 Model T, and an original outhouse! Continue to Barstow along the National Old Trails Highway, which runs parallel to the railroad tracks and the usually parched Mojave River. Passing through odd little towns like Oro Grande harboring a colorful sight: the hard-to-miss Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch featuring thousands of green, blue, brown, and clear glass bottles dangling from a forest of mostly metal “trees” created by a white-bearded local retiree named Elmer Long. You can’t get more Route 66 than that! Continue through Newberry Springs, the setting of the cult classic Percy Adlon movie, Bagdad Café, before traveling along the Mojave National Preserve, a harsh desert landscape of volcanic cinder cones and sand dunes, desert tortoises, and Joshua trees. Overnight in Laughlin NV, otherwise known as Little Vegas. B

Day 4: After breakfast we travel to Seligman AZ, which embraces yesteryear. Several colorful and quirky gift shops, including Angel & Vilma Delgadillo's Original Route 66 Gift Shop, the Historic Seligman Sundries, 66 Hippie Cricket, and the Rusty Bolt still exist for us to explore. The town was also used as the idea for Radiator Springs, the fictional town from Pixar's Movie, Cars. Look for nods to the film around town, including a Mater-like toothy truck in front of the Historic Seligman Sundries. Overnight in Flagstaff, “Gateway to the Grand Canyon South Rim”, with dinner. B D

Day 7: Today we explore what is left of Route 66 in Albuquerque, which is quite a lot. Travel the Tijeras Pass heading west, following the route of weary travelers of past decades, as you enter a multicolored corridor of neon signs. Some of the original motels still exist between Eubank and Carlisle streets, but the action really starts when you reach Nob Hill and the Aztec Motel featuring its bizarre façade decorated with thousands of ornaments left by a modern resident. In the next block, a 10-foot flying saucer hovers over the Satellite Café, and there are many more features and reminders of the highway’s glory days- you’ve entered the quirky side of Albuquerque! B

Day 8: Our journey continues along Route 66 towards Amarillo with a stop for lunch in Tucumcari, where many vintage motels and restaurants built from the 1930s to the 1950s are still in business. Dinner and overnight in Amarillo TX, known as the “Yellow Rose of Texas”. B D

Day 9: Cross into the Texas Panhandle and return to Old Route 66 for a scenic drive with stops at Texahoma Ghost Town, the Art Deco Station, and a café from the 1930s in Shamrock, TX. Next, we stop in the town of Clinton for the ultimate Route 66 experience. The Oklahoma Route 66 Museum offers visitors a personal journey through the history of the nation's most revered highway. Encounter the iconic ideas, images, and myths of the Mother Road. Learn about the dreams and the labor needed to make the road a reality. Experience the Dust Bowl as thousands streamed along the road, away from drought and despair, and towards the "land of promise". Listen to the sounds of the Big Band era, when the roar of the big trucks and the welcome home cries to returning soldiers dominated the road. Sit at the counter or a booth in the 1950s diner and feel the open road like many vacationing families before you. Arrive, and overnight in Oklahoma City. B

Day 10: Begin the morning at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum to experience the legacy of the American West. With more than 28,000 Western and American Indian artworks and artifacts, including works by artists such as Charles Russell and Frederic Remington, it is home to one of the most comprehensive collections of Western art in the world. The museum complex also contains Prosperity Junction, a turn-of-the-century western town reproduction with a gallery dedicated to western performers,

the American cowboy, and rodeos. The afternoon is free to discover the historic Stockyards, a great place to purchase all things Western. New cowboy boots anyone? Steak dinner included. Overnight in Oklahoma City. B D

Day 11: Travel through eastern Oklahoma along the scenic stretch of road known as the Will Rogers Highway. Along the way, we’ll stop at plenty of Route 66 attractions in Joplin and Galena. In Claremore, we stop at the Will Rogers Memorial Museum dedicated to this famous “Wild West” American performer. Continue to the lively American musical mecca of Branson, for dinner and a great show. B D

Day 12: Travel to St. Louis, a major river port, railroad hub, and industrial center, best known for the Lewis and Clark departure point on their epic travel west. Take the tram to the center of the famous Gateway Arch. The 192m high stainless-steel arch, commemorating westward expansion, is part of the Jefferson National Memorial and a symbol of the city. Overnight in St. Louis. B

Day 13: Our first stop today is the city of Springfield, founded by trappers and traders in 1818, the capital of the state of Illinois since 1837. Enjoy a guided excursion to the Abraham Lincoln House and Museum in Springfield. Stop in McLean at the Dixie Truckers Home, a truck stop built in 1928, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, before arriving in the city of Chicago! B

Day 14: Enjoy a full day of exploration in Chicago, known as the “Windy City”. The Loop is the historical center of Chicago and here you will find the Sears Tower, Grant Park, Millennium Park, and Navy Pier. Following lunch, you will continue your tour with a visit to Lincoln Park and the go-to district for those who appreciate fine art and design, before ending at the end/start of Route 66. Take advantage of the photo opportunity of the Route 66 sign at the Russian Tea Time Restaurant. Farewell dinner this evening. B D
