Stumptown Park, situated in the heart of downtown, features an outdoor amphitheater and the Vietnam War memorial. Matthews is situated on the southeastern side of Mecklenburg County in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. Residents and businesses alike enjoy short commutes to Charlotte, Monroe, Pineville, and Fort Mill. The town is conveniently located along Interstate 485, Hwy. 74, and Hwy. 51. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is ranked among the top 10 busiest airport in the world and can be reached within a 30-minute drive. Matthews’ location is made even more attractive by the relative ease of getting to regional landmarks such as the Blue Ridge Parkway or the beaches along the Carolina coast within a couple of hours by car.

MATTHEWS TRAIN DEPOT & VISITORS CENTER

The Train Depot offers a free interactive experience for everyone. The historic red Seaboard caboose is a favorite spot for wedding, prom, or family photos and it’s a fun place where children are welcome to play. The Depot was constructed in the late 1880s. Passenger service ended in 1958, but the Depot remained in operation until 1966. The Train Depot stood idle until 1999 when the Town of Matthews purchased it and relocated it to its prominent location on the Town Green in downtown Matthews. The building was restored and now serves as home to the Matthews Visitors Center and the Matthews Chamber of Commerce. A variety of Town merchandise and memorabilia is available at the center.

MATTHEWS HERITAGE MUSEUM

Step back in time and learn about the history of Matthews at this educational and interactive museum located in the Massey-Clark House, built in 1879. Visitors can explore a country doctor’s office, the bank, the local drug store and learn about the importance of the railroad to this community. HISTORIC REID HOUSE

The Sportsplex at Matthews is an athletic facility that consists of nine synthetic turf fields and two grass fields. All fields are multi-purpose and can accommodate a variety of sports; soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey, rugby, etc. A 5,000capacity stadium with a natural grass field is the premier athletic facility to host amateur, collegiate, and professional sporting events. The stadium includes a two-story field house with home, away, and referee locker rooms. The top floor of the field house is a 90-person conference room that is available to rent. There is ample parking with 1,400 parking spaces. The Sportsplex also has two playgrounds and roughly 2 miles of paved trails.

Matthews is governed by a Mayor and a six-member Board of Commissioners. A nonpartisan election for Mayor is held every two years. Commissioner elections are also nonpartisan and all seats are at-large. Commissioners are elected for two year terms. The next election is November 2025.

Town Council meetings are held the second and fourth Mondays of every month at 7:00 pm at Town Hall. The public is given an opportunity to speak at every meeting for five minutes on any topic. A sign-up sheet is in the lobby before every meeting if you would like to address the board.

Accessible and welcoming to all, the 15,000 sq. ft. Matthews Library is part of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library system.

The library is in the Matthews Town Center, which also houses the Matthews Town Hall. Because the Matthews Town Center is located next to the old Train Depot, a train theme can be found throughout the library. Special features include a children's computer area shaped like a larger-than-life toy train and a large, crackling fireplace and original artwork.

The Matthews Library is dedicated to providing exceptional services and programs. Materials available for check-out include books, magazines, DVDs, audiobooks, educational kits, and digital content. If our library does not have access to an item, we will request it from other libraries in our system. There are many reasons why you might be looking for a new healthcare provider. Maybe you've moved to another city, or perhaps your doctor is retiring. If you need a new doctor, here are some pointers to help you find the right one for you.

WORK THROUGH YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY

One place to start is by looking for a healthcare provider in your insurance network. Most insurance plans have a list of physicians who are in-network, which means the care you get will be covered under your insurance policy. While you can go out of network for care, it may cost more and some things may not be covered by your insurance. Your insurance carrier probably has a list of in-network providers on their website, or you can call them to ask for a list of physicians in your network and in your area.

SEEK RECOMMENDATIONS

Referrals from people you know and trust are an excellent resource for locating a new service provider. It is also possible to ask one provider to suggest other providers. For instance, if you have

a dentist you like, you could ask them to recommend a doctor.

CHECK CREDENTIALS

When you have found a medical professional, check their credentials—not just the type of degree that he or she has, but also whether they stay up-to-date on the latest advances and changes in medicine. Beyond a basic state license, check to see if they hold any other certifications?

ou may have heard the term Fear Free from a friend or seen it advertised. Founded in 2016 by Dr. Marty Becker, it comprises a group of different veterinarian professionals and pet experts gathered together for the single purpose of preventing and alleviating fear, anxiety, and stress in pets by inspiring and educating the veterinary professionals and people who care for them. Since its inception, more than 132,000 professionals have become Fear Free Certified and more than 187,000 professionals have registered for the various Fear Free veterinary and pet professional programs.

In 2019, Passionate Paws Animal Hospital proudly joined an elite group of practices to attain the honored distinction of becoming a Fear Free Certified Practice. This cer-

tification means that all our doctors and team members on staff, including our groomers, are all individually trained as Fear Free professionals. Being Fear Free certified validates much of what we have already practiced since opening over four years ago. Fear Free certified practices will have successfully implemented Fear Free into all aspects of their business: culture and leadership, client education, staff training, the facility, and most importantly, patient visits. My husband and I built our hospital for pet parents because we are pet parents and so is everyone on our team. We set out to create a unique experience for both pets and pet parents that put your furbaby at the center, promoted and delivered a Fear Free experience, provided integrative pet healthcare, and partnered with you as the primary care-

giver in developing customized treatment plans. When we started our design, we knew nothing of the Fear Free program, we just knew there had to be a better experience for pets and pet parents than the traditional vet visit so many of us have experienced in the past.

A visit to the vet should be pleasant and fun, not stressful and fearful. In order to do this we completely reinvented the look, feel, and even smell that has long been associated with a typical animal hospital. But, we didn’t stop at design. We also reexamined our approach to patient care and pet parent service to ensure a calm, pleasant, and fun experience for pets and pet parents alike.

At Passionate Paws, we strive to make every patient visit a Fear Free experience as every team member wants your pet to be happy when he or she walks through the door of our animal hospital. Fear Free doesn’t mean that your pet will never experience anything uncomfortable at our hospital-he or she may be injured or ill, after all-but it does mean that we make every effort to reduce any fear, anxiety, and stress related to examinations, procedures, and grooming. Here are a few of the ways we help your pet stay comfortable and relaxed from arrival to departure.

When you first arrive at our hospital your senses and your pet’s will be greeted with pleasing smells from our aromatherapy diffuser, designed to calm and relieve anxiety. No hospital should smell like an animal hospital, and ours never does. To ease our patients even more, we have designed our waiting area to be species specific, with cats and dogs on opposite sides. Taking it one step further, we built a cat-only exam room (no dogs allowed) to provide an added layer of calmness for our feline friends. For those dogs that are a bit more nervous, we can bring you right

away into our side door that leads directly into an exam room. For our anxious cats, we can bring them directly into the cat-only exam room upon arrival.

Upon entering the exam room, you and your pet will notice that performing exams on a cold, slick table are a thing of the past. For our dog patients, we provide comfortable bedding on the floor, where our medical team conducts the majority of their examinations and procedures. For our cat patients, we offer a cat tree as well as warm bedding to perform the majority of the examinations and procedures. Each room is equipped with natural pheromone diffusers that emit calming substances into the air that are specific to dogs and cats, and play species-specific music bioacoustically engineered to calm your pet (and maybe even you.)

These examples and more await each and everyone of our patients and pet parents at Passionate Paws, providing a very unique one-of-akind experience. Our hospital becoming a Fear Free Certified Practice is just the natural progression from what my husband and I envisioned from the start. Adoption Process

• Bring your ID and adoption payment.

• Bring a leash/collar set for dogs, and/or carriers for cats and small pets.

• When you find a pet, you are interested in meeting, take a picture of the kennel card and head to the customer service desk.

• Staff will provide any and all information listed and then bring the pet to you.

• When you fall in love and ready to adopt, keep the pet in the room, and go back to the staff.

• Provide your ID, phone number, and email address to complete the adoption process.

• If the pet you are interested in adopting is spayed or neutered, they can go home with you the same day! Otherwise, you'll adopt but they'll have to stay to get that done. Staff will let you know their surgery day and time of pickup.

Yard waste collection occurs weekly on your service day. Do not put yard waste in your garbage. Use paper bags, tarps, Leaf Burritos, or their personal reusable yard waste container which needs to be clearly marked with the words “YARD WASTE. Tree limbs - 4 feet lengths, 3 feet height and 5-inch diameter - no more than 3 stacks.
