Greetings from the Mayor I would like to welcome you to Mint Hill, a great place to live, work and play. I am proud to say that Mint Hill was ranked in the top ten of the Safest Places in North Carolina and I can assure you we are striving to be number one on that list. The Town of Mint Hill was not incorporated until 1971, but our history dates back to 1770 when the settlers established the Philadelphia Presbyterian Church. Although the Town continues to experience exciting growth and revitalization, one constant remains - the extraordinary sense of community. The Town has something to offer everyone - the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village, a growing art community, North Carolina Korean War Veterans Memorial, Movies on the Lawn, June Tunes, Discover Mint Hill and our Mint Hill Madness festival which is held Memorial Day weekend. This annual event includes a parade, carnival rides, arts and craft vendors, musical entertainment and the area's largest firework display on Saturday night. Our community pride is not just exhibited during special community events, but can also be seen every day throughout the year. The productive and involved residents of Mint Hill make the Town a desirable place to live. The Mint Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Mint Hill Historical Society, Mint Hill Athletic Association, Mint Hill Arts, Veterans of Foreign War Post #4059, Mint Hill Kiwanis and Mint Hill Lion's Club are all valuable resources for Town residents and visitors alike. On behalf of the Board of Commissioners and the citizens we are elected to represent, it is my pleasure to welcome you into our Town and invite you to experience all that Mint Hill has to offer. I look forward to seeing you around town. Warm regards,

Ted H. Biggers, Jr. Ted H. Biggers, Jr.

DID YOU KNOW?

Unlike World War II and Vietnam, the Korean War did not get much media attention in the United States. The most famous representation of the war in popular culture is the television series “M*A*S*H,” which was set in a field hospital in South Korea. The series ran from 1972 until 1983, and its final episode was the most-watched in television history.

The North Carolina Korean War Veterans Memorial was created to ensure that future generations remember and honor the pride and dedication of those who served, the legacy they continued, and the freedom they preserved. This memorial will ensure that the soldier’s sacrifice will always be remembered. There were 788 members of the military from N.C. who were killed or missing in action during the war. The N.C. Korean War Veterans Memorial is the only one of its kind in the state.

The main part of the memorial is encircled with a 188 ft. double wall planter with dwarf hollies. In the center is an eternal fountain in the shape Source: www.history.com of the Korean Taeguek which is a part of the South Korean flag. Four 11 ft. granite pillars surround the fountain and include the names of the 788 North Carolinians who made the supreme sacrifice with their life. Granite benches face each of the four pillars. Two life-sized statues of American soldiers are a part of the monument. Chapter 265 of the N.C. Korean War Veteran’s Association which is headquartered in Indian Trail, NC were responsible for building the only memorial of its kind in the state. $700.000, in cash donations and approximately $200.000 in pro bono labor and materials came from several sources including the sales of memorial and honor pavers, local businesses, the Town of Mint Hill, Korean churches and Korean Business Associations, and the government of South Korea.

Land for Future Parks Creating new parks in a community takes a lot of time to go from vision to reality. The Town of Mint Hill has already completed a major step of protecting land from development and preserving it for future generations by purchasing 27.5 acres located along Brief Road. After receiving a grant of $335,000 from the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF), the town matched the grant and purchased the land for a final cost of $670,000. Although the design of the park facility has not been decided yet, there is a strong need for athletic fields for sports such as soccer, football, and lacrosse. The next steps include planning, surveying and equipping the property. Beginning in 2008, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation began acquiring land to build future parks. They currently own over 22,000 acres of community and regional parks, nature preserve sites, and greenway connectors. Mecklenburg County is planning to purchase 140 acres along Fairview Road to hold for a future regional county park. It is located across from the Olde Sycamore subdivision. Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department’s funding is already in place for the next few years. Planning and development of this land is not included in the 20152019 Capital Improvement Plan. It’s likely it could take up to 10 years for residents of Mint Hill to have this land become another recreational option, but at least the land will already be obtained when it’s time to build. When the time comes for the site to be developed, input will come from town officials and Mint Hill residents as to what amenities will be needed and wanted.

Fallen HEROES Appreciating Our

On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 58 hours.

Many people take for granted that officers put their lives on the line every day. Beginning in 2013, Sgt. Michael Gainey, of the Mint Hill Police Department, has organized an annual 5K run and walk called Soles 2 Remember to help raise awareness and honor the brave men and women law enforcement officers who have lost their lives. The sergeant participated in a memorial for police officers in downtown Charlotte and felt like it would be nice to bring that type of appreciation for our fallen heroes to Mint Hill as well So far Mr. Gainey has been able to raise over $20,000 for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) with the Soles 2 Remember events. A number of local businesses have stepped up to sponsor and make generous donations

to Soles 2 Remember over the past couple of years. NLEOMF, a nonprofit organization, was founded in 1984 and seeks to honor and remember the service and sacrifice of American law enforcement officers. The NLEOMF does not receive any taxpayer money to fund its day-to-day operations. The fund built and maintains the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial located in Washington, D.C. Dedicated in 1991, the nation’s monument was built to honor the more than 20,000 officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the citizens they are sworn to serve and protect since the first recorded death of a police officer in 1791.

The Mint Hill Police Department hosted the third annual Soles 2 Remember event in May, 2015 at Pine Lake Country Club and drew over 200 participants, spectators and law enforcement officers. The Police Department is involved with the event by assisting with traffic flow the day of the race and donating a gift to the overall male and female runner.

The Soles 2 Remember 5K is held each year to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, which honors fallen law enforcement officers.

His goal for the 2016 race is to raise more money for the NLEOMF and attract more participants for the walk and run events. Gainey eventually would like to have other local law enforcement agencies, such as the Matthews Police Department and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Departments join in the event. If you are interested in participating, volunteering, donating or spronsoring the next Soles 2 Remember event check our the website at: www.soles2remember.org or visit www.facebook.com/soles2remember

History In 1701, Surveyor General and naturalist, John Lawson, ventured from Charleston inland to the wilds of the backcountry. He found “a paradise” of luxuriant savannas laced with pristine streams and edged with majestic forests. John Rogers was said to have been the first settler to the area in 1732. By 1750, the fearless Scotch-Irish Presbyterians from Pennsylvania headed south in droves down the Indian Trading Path that later became known as The Great Wagon Road and this community was called Clear Creek. Many early communities adopted their names after the midnineteenth century railroad stops in their area. Clear Creek did not have a rail stop so the name may have come from an assay office established in the town during the local gold rush. Or perhaps the Mint Hill name was derived from another tradition that says the postmaster had an affinity for mint tea. Churches were established as the center of the community and early settlers placed a high premium on education. Churches were the first to provide classes and open local schoolhouses. Bain Academy, a privately owned institution, was established by John Bain in 1889 as a church school. Students came from all over the country to attend Bain, one of the few high schools in the county. Originally chartered in 1899, the town fathers petitioned the state in 1910 to cancel the town charter upon learning that state road work would not be done inside of corporate limits. So it remained until

1971 when alarm over the approaching city of Charlotte annexation threatened the community. The charter was resurrected to protect Mint Hill from Charlotte’s sprawl. As Mint Hill entered into the new century, the town’s business and industry expanded to meet the needs of the growing community. Agriculture and dairy farming continued to dominate the still rural area, but other industries emerged as crop farming became less profitable. The years have brought many changes to this once rural farming area. While opening its arms to diversity and growth, Mint Hill continues to retain its country charm. n

Built around 1890 for Dr. John McCamie DeArmon, the building was also used by Dr. Ayer Manny Whitley from 1908 until 1951. In addition to seeing patients in the office, both doctors made house calls, first on horseback and later by automobile.

Ira V. Ferguson, the father of seven, built this country store in the early 20th century and ran it for a decade before dying of pneumonia at age 38. He kept milk, butter, eggs, cheese, fruit, vegetables, tobacco and sodas in the cold storage cellar, cooled by a big block of ice. Sometimes he treated his children to NuGrape soda, passed from one to the other while sitting in a circle.

THE SPIRIT OF TIMES PAST

Surface Hill Gold Mine Assay Office circa 1800

Miners brought their gold to the Surface Hill Gold Mine assay office to determine if they had “struck it rich”. After the discovery of gold in nearby Cabarrus County in 1799, mines sprang up like weeds all over the area, including Mint Hill, which was home to four major mines and others registered in Mecklenburg County.

Buggy House

Look into the buggy house and you will see a 1917 Chevy, a large four-seated surrey, a hit and miss engine and a doctor's buggy! They are great examples of the history of rural America from 1880 to 1930.

The Ashcraft School circa Late 1800’s

Students, ages 5-20, learned to read, recite, write, and cipher at this one-room school built near the Rocky Spring Cemetery on Brief Road in the late 1800’s. They walked to and from school, carried their lunches in buckets, and helped the teacher build fires and fetch water in the morning.

Using hand tools and only human-powered machines this is where furniture, barrels, buckets, wagons and wheels were made.

It’s time to take another ‘step into history’ and preserve the almost bygone era of farming in the Mint Hill area. It’s time to raise a barn! The barn will not only be a place to teach and remind visitors of the important role farm-ing had in the area, but also a place for families to gather and celebrate special occasions, and even a place for a good ol’ fashioned hoe down! We’re asking you to be a friend of the village and contribute to the Barn Raising! Your donation of any amount will make a difference in preserving the rich history of our community.

or 105 years, the Boy Scouts have been training boys to become responsible men and productive members of their communities. In a world increasingly shaped by “online” experience rather than outdoor activities, the Boy Scouts continue to transform boys into men and make a unique and vital contribution to the health and quality of life for communities across the nation. Lots of eager kids across the country participate in Boy Scouts when they are young, drawn by trips, outdoor adventures and maybe even the marshmallows around the campfire. There are countless opportunities that kids would not have chances to try if it were not for the Boy Scouts. An important value and tradition of the Boys Scouts of America is helping the community. Take a look around the Mint Hill area and you will see many improvements resulting from many Scout projects. Regular service work at food pantries, local marathons and special projects offer many opportunities for Scouts to give back to their community. Scouts truly learn the rewards of “making a difference” in our community. Scouting builds character and self-reliance as well as promotes active citizenship. Just last year, numerous Scouts of the

Mecklenburg County Council collected and sorted over 245,00 pounds of food for shelters and food banks in the community. Scouts in the Mint Hill area belong to the Etowah District of The Mecklenburg County Council. In 2014, a total of 59 young men in the Etowah District earned the distinction of Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout is the highest rank possible in the Boy Scouting program. Since it was introduced in 1911, more than 2.25 million young men have achieved the Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank. Eagle Scout is a big deal. For one thing, it takes a lot of work to get the position. A scout requires passing all six levels of Scouts, earning 21 merit badges including first aid and emergency preparedness, serving six months in a troop leadership position, spearhead a community service project that they organize and manage themselves from start to finish, and passing the Eagle Scout Board of Review. The project must provide a service to the community, as well as demonstrate the Scout’s responsibility as a leader. According to Scouting.org, a Scout must "plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any

Projects have included building arbors, a gold panning shelter, a vintage playground, a blacksmith shop, ramps for the handicapped, as well as many other extraordinary gifts. In recognition of the immeasurable contributions of the Scouts for their community service, an Eagle Pole has been constructed in the Village. Each Scout’s name and the year his project was completed is engraved on a stone and placed at the base of the pole. The young men who have turned their envisioned projects into reality to earn their Eagle Scout merit should feel very proud of their accomplishments because their contributions are definitely going to be enjoyed for a long time. n

Dog Treat Bakery Receives Recognition for their Excellence in Community Service Barks, Bones & Biscuits Bakery, a Mint Hill boutique dog treat retailer specializing in healthy treats with all-natural ingredients, was honored for its commitment to community service at the Global Pet Expo. Robyn Kline, owner of Barks, Bones & Biscuits Bakery, was officially presented with the 2015 Award during Global Pet Expo’s Annual Pet Industry Breakfast on March 5. The pet industry’s largest annual trade show, Global Pet Expo is presented by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) and Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA). The Retailer Excellence Awards are designed to honor outstanding independent pet stores in 10 different categories, and entries are judged by a committee of Global Pet Expo and Pet Business Media staff members. This honor recognizes fellowship, integrity and a clear demonstration that the store is committed to giving back to the community. Community involvement is a cornerstone of this business, and they strive to support the communities. Animals are their passion, and they work with many shelters, rescues and animal organizations to promote the welfare of animals.

Barks, Bones & Biscuits Bakery got its start by participating at numerous dog-focused events in the area as a vendor. Robyn would make her all-natural dog treats in her home kitchen and take them to the dog shows to sell. It didn’t take long for Kline to realize that there was a want and a need for her delicious pet concoctions and she opened a store front on Lawyers Road in Mint Hill in 2013. Kline is dedicated to offering only the very best natural treats, along with an unmatched and highly personal customer experience in the store. She has always wanted to be involved with the dog community and rescues. Barks, Bones & Biscuits Bakery has held numerous dog food drives and raffles to raise money throughout the years. This past summer they sponsored their own festival called “Dog Days of Summer”, which included a silent auction, raffles, vendors, food, face painting, micro chip clinic as well as local rescue groups offering dog adoptions. Donations of new and gently used collars, leashes, blankets, beds and toys are always accepted at the store.

Top Reasons Why You Should Vote

 Voting is a way to speak your mind and let your voice be heard! Your vote is your voice. When we vote, we are actually telling elected officials and lawmakers how we feel about education, public safety, social security, health care, and other important issues.  One voice, one vote really does count! Remember: there is power in numbers, and when we vote and get our family members to vote, we can truly make a difference. If you don’t vote for what you believe in, others will – and you may not like the outcome.  Voting changes communities! Do you ever wonder why one neighborhood gets passed over for things it needs, while another seems to get it all? One big reason is voting. When we vote, we can get results that we can actually see. How Green Is Your House? Living an eco-friendly lifestyle starts at home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, residential use accounts for more than one-fifth of the nation’s total energy consumption. Adopting an earth-first, energy saving mindset will let you make adjustments around your home so that you can feel good about your family’s contributions to protect the environment.

w Wash only full loads of laundry, and use cold water when possible. w Air-dry dishes, rather than using the heated drying cycle of the dishwasher.

For more information about using propane and propane-powered appliances in your home, visit www.propane.com.

Green Energy Improving your home’s energy efficiency is not only good for the planet, it’s good for your wallet. After all, wasted energy is money lost in monthly utility bills. Numerous factors influence a home’s energy efficiency, or lack thereof. Air leaks, outdated appliances or inefficient heating and cooling systems can all negatively impact your home’s energy usage. Structural Improvements Correcting any structural issues can go a long way toward making your home more efficient. Give your home a thorough inspection to identify and repair leaks and cracks around windows, doors and duct work. Remember that poorly sealed attics and basements are also common culprits of energy loss. Appliances and Major Systems Upgrading your appliances and temperature control systems also helps drive more efficient energy use throughout the house. Look for ENERGY STAR-certified products, which are designed to save energy without sacrificing on performance. Where possible, make purchases that will perform double duty, such as high-efficiency washing machines that can save on both energy and water usage. Fuel Sources Choosing the right energy source can also help lessen your impact on the environment. For example, using propane-powered appliances in your home can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. According to a recent study sponsored by the Propane Education & Research Council, propane-powered furnaces emit 73 percent fewer greenhouse gases than electricity. Similarly, propane-powered storage water heaters emit approximately 39 percent less greenhouse gas than electric storage models. Shopping smart to incorporate high-efficiency appliances and electronics into your home is just a first step. There are many other ways you can make such products even more sustainable: w Rely on LED light bulbs, which use a fraction of the energy and last significantly longer than traditional bulbs. w Use light timers to turn off lights when they aren’t needed. w Make a habit of powering off lights and other electronics when you leave the room. w Set a programmable thermostat to adjust temperatures when you’re away from home.
