Where Is Waxhaw? Within 20 miles of the bustling city of Charlotte, NC, Waxhaw is located on the southwest corner of Union County in North Carolina and very close to the border of South Carolina. Surrounding communities include Marvin, Mineral Springs, Wesley Chapel, and Monroe. Access to Waxhaw is made easy by NC 75 and NC 16 which intersect at the center of Waxhaw’s downtown area. Waxhaw also provides easy access to the major interstate systems of I-485, I-85 and I-77, making regional travel simple. Waxhaw and Union County has some of the highest rates of growth in the United States, and Waxhaw has seen a major construction boom since 2000. Many new residents live in Waxhaw and work in or around Charlotte. Waxhaw has large areas of natural habitat and green space including parks and gardens that are perfect for get togethers with friends and family. The area is also well-known as an equestrian community. Here you’ll find peaceful living combined with convenient access to some of the state’s metropolitan centers, its beaches or its mountains.

Waxhaw enjoys a comfortable climate. The climate is ideal with an average temperature of 57 degrees and average rainfall of 46 inches per year. Mild spring and autumn days allow year-round seasonal pleasure. The sun shines an average of 211 days making it an ideal place to enjoy outdoor activities of all kinds. The comfort index, which is based on humidity during the hot months, is a 35 out of 100, where higher is more comfortable. The US average on the comfort index is 44. The warmest month of the year is July with an average maximum temperature of 90° degrees, making summers warm and humid. The coldest month of the year is January with an average minimum temperature of 32 degrees.

AREA HISTORY The first commercial gold mines in the United States were in North Carolina Many people have learned about the history of the great California Gold Rush in school, but many are unaware of the major role that the state of North Carolina played in the early development of the gold mining industry.
and mechanical separation of the gold from mineralized deposits. Although a large number of the skilled mine laborers headed west with the gold rush, there were those who stayed in North Carolina to work the mines.
In 1799, gold was discovered in North Carolina by twelve-year-old Conrad Reed. Not knowing the 17pound rock was worth any value, the family used it as a doorstop for three years.
In the Waxhaw area, Howie Gold Mine was opened in 1848, eight years before the discovery of gold in California. Located just outside the town limits and known as the Colossus mine, this was one of North Carolina's largest and most productive gold mines.
Soon, word began to spread about the discovery of gold in the area and many people came to claim their share of fortune.
At the most productive time, Howie Gold Mine employed 100 workers. Mining was extremely dangerous and many accidents resulted in maiming injuries or even death. The lodes were quickly exploited and an estimated $250,000 was mined in 1854.
The state of North Carolina possesses the title of having the first commercial gold mines in the United States. For a time before the Civil War, mining was the second most important economic activity and had a huge impact on settlement and growth in the central part of North Carolina. By 1832, more than fifty mines were in production in the state with over 25,000 people working the mines. North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia produced nearly all the gold that was being circulated in the country for a period of time before the frenzied rush to California in the mid-1800’s. With the amount of gold discovered in the
southeastern part of the United States, Congress approved construction of new mints and assay offices in the south. In 1837, the Charlotte Mint was one of three new mints built and opened and began minting coins in 1838.
In 1885, Howie Gold Mine was re-opened after a hiatus that was brought on by the Civil War. After brief intervals of mining operations the mine closed in 1942. Today, the property is privately owned.
The experience and skills that were learned as well as the equipment used in the early years of gold mining in North Carolina played an important role in the innovations that were developed for the gold mines on the west coast. These included hydraulic mining, chemical baths

Government & Administration The Town of Waxhaw is governed by a Council/Town Manager format. The Board of Commissioners sets the policy which the Town Manager carries out. The Town Manager is responsible for the daily operations of the town. This governing body consists of the Town Manager, the Mayor and five Commissioners. They all work together to make decisions in order to maintain and improve the safety and well-being of the community and economic development. Each Commissioner is elected to a four- year term and elections are held every two years. This process allows for overlapping terms.

Fire Department The Waxhaw Community Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad is a volunteer organization that functions because of the people who volunteer their time to provide fire protection and emergency medical first response. This department has proudly served the community since 1954 and was one of the first volunteer departments in Union County.
Small Town Main Street Program Waxhaw was designated as a Small Town Main Street Community in 2009. The goal is to provide support and opportunities for local downtown businesses using an established program offered through the N.C. Department of Commerce, Office of Urban Development. This is a voluntary effort led by community members that either work, own properties, live, or are interested in redeveloping downtown Waxhaw into a prosperous, vibrant, downtown that supports both the local community and brings outside resources and customers.

Explorers Program
The Waxhaw Police Explorer and Cadet Program, established in December 2004, is made up of young adults from the ages of 12 to 20 years of age. These young adults, who are interested in learning about enforcement and leadership dedicate their time under the advisement of Waxhaw Police Department Sergeant James Pool and

A twenty-first century building – complete with a simulator room and GoPro® camera – connects the Waxhaw Police Department with the town’s growing population.
The 27,000 sq. ft. building, which cost $3.5 million in renovations, is expected to meet the needs of the police department and public programs of today and in the coming years. By having enough space within the two-story building, the police department has plenty of room to expand in the future. According to Waxhaw Police Chief Michael Eiss, the new building offers the opportunity for better training for police officers, space for public programs, interview rooms for witnesses and suspects, and a larger and more secure evidence room. The building allows the police department to grow with the town. Eiss said that the new building should meet the needs of Waxhaw’s growing population for the next 50 years. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Waxhaw experienced 14.6 percent population growth from 9,859 people in 2010 to 11,295 in 2013.
“As the growth comes into town, we want to maintain the pace of that growth, so that we’re not getting behind and are able to maintain the quality of life we have right now,” Eiss said. Renovations for the new police station began in October 2013 and police staff moved in during April 2014. The former police station was located in a shopping center giving the staff of 27 very little personnel room. “We didn’t have space for a lot of equipment,” Eiss said. “It had to be put in storage. We had to use other agencies’ equipment.” The Town of Waxhaw purchased a “shell of a building”. According to Eiss, the downstairs foyer was the only concrete floor in the structure. Originally, the building was meant to provide space for doctors’ offices and pharmacies. The location at 3620 Providence Road South sits across from other doctors’ offices. But, when the need for a police station in town was necessary, the town worked with general contractors, Edifice Inc., for the renovations.

with furniture and a toy box. Eiss said that this room provides a safe space for abused victims, including children. “The building sat vacant from 2006 until we started on it,” Eiss said. CarolinaWeekly reported on May 5, 2014 in “Waxhaw Police get a New Home” that the Town of Waxhaw paid $171,586 to Creech & Associates for the design, $141,611 for furniture and kitchen appliances, $38,865 to attorneys and $38,865 for public art. The new police department building also provides police officers with more uses and space for training.
“It’s a little less intimidating, so if we have rape victims or children that have been abused or molested, we can take them in there and hopefully make it a little more pleasant experience,” Eiss said. In the past, Eiss said that the police officers have had to use the services of the Treehouse in Monroe. While the department still uses the services sometimes, the soft interview room saves officers drive time and provides victims a safe space in Waxhaw.
“I went around to all the police stations that were recently built and got ideas from them,” Eiss said.

Eiss and the police department worked with the Town of Waxhaw, general contractor, Edifice and architect firm, Creech and Associates, to add two holding cells; larger evidence room, armory; two interview rooms downstairs for patrol; a hard interview room for standard suspects, and a training room. According to Eiss, one of the biggest challenges for the police department is maintaining to keep up with Waxhaw’s population. “We can actually go into Waxhaw Elementary School and do an active shooter scenario,” Eiss said. “Film it, upload it to the simulator, and now you got a scenario every officer in the county can train on. That’s worth its weight in gold.” The officers train with technology in real situations, such as a school shooting or traffic stops. This helps officers to fix mistakes now rather than later. PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE One of the most popular places in the town is the gentle sloping pedestrian bridge. Located in the heart of downtown, this town icon was built in 1888 when the railroad company built a rail line to Atlanta. Constructed of large timber trusses, the narrow bridge served automobile traffic on the then main road through town over the railroad line until approximately 1940, when it was designated for pedestrian use only. In 2007, the Town partnered with CSX railroad transportaion to renovate the bridge. Today, many people, young and old, climb the stairs to the top so they can stand on the wooden planks of the bridge and watch as a train passes under their feet.

MUSEUM OF THE WAXHAWS This museum is brimming with collections that tell story upon story of the humble beginnings of the Land of the Waxhaws. Visitors can learn about the indians and the pioneers who gave birth to this burgeoning community, as well as this nation’s 7th President, Andrew Jackson, who grew up in the Waxhaw region. See many historic artifacts in the permanent and temporary exhibits. Step back in time as you stroll through the Secrest Homestead, a nineteenth century family residence log house with several outbuildings. MEXICO CÅRDENAS MUSEUM This museum is dedicated to former president of Mexico, Lázaro Cárdenas (1934-1940) and his love and commitment to the people of Mexico. There is a bust of President Cardenas from sculpture Alan E. Baughman. Displays include historical photographs which focus on Cardenas, books in many indigenous languages, outstanding folk art, interesting ancient pieces of jewelry and embroidered native costumes that can still be seen in Mexico villages today. WATER TOWER This 49,000 stainless-steel structure looms over the downtown area with it’s close proximity to Main Street (Hwy. 75) and the railroad tracks that run through the center of town. It was built in 1940 by Taylor Water Works. The tank was the town’s water supply for many years until new ground water tanks were bult on Sims Road. Restoration work was completed by Utility Service, a water tank maintenance and repair company, in the early part of 2013. Repairs were made to the tank’s steel parts, joints, sway roads, manhole covers, gaskets and tank cover as well as sandblasting the interior and exterior of the tank. Utility Service will continue maintenance on it for 10 years.
JUG & WELL This large clay urn was originally used at the Rodman-Heath Mill. The 1899 mill was the town’s leading employer and played a vital role in the town’s economy for many years. In the mid1980’s the Jug was moved from the mill to the location of the current Dare Steele Memorial Garden. Around 2003 it was again moved to its current downtown location near the well. The well was originally dug circa 1900 to serve the trains and crews of the Depot and remained in use until the 1920’s. The current well replica, built in 1989, commemorates Waxhaw’s original community well which once stood near this spot.

MUSEUM OF THE ALPHABET This one-of-a-kind 4,900 square foot museum tells the story of alphabet makers from ancient history to modern times. It details how languages are written, spoken, translated, and printed. Photographs, paintings, sculpture and weavings, quiz boxes and models help visitors grasp and appreciate the vast amount of information available. MILITARY WALL OF HONOR Created in 2004, this all brick structure salutes the brave men and women who have defended the freedoms we enjoy. Commemorative bricks and ceramic markers create an enclosure around the flags. Situated at the center of town, near the intersection of two busy State Highways, there are over 800 names on the wall with room for at least 1000 more. Annual Memorial Day and Veteran Day celebrations take place at this location as well as other special activities throughout the year. The wall is maintained by the Waxhaw American Legion Post Auxiliary.

R.J. BELK BUILDING Located in the heart of downtown Waxhaw, directly across from the Pedestrian Bridge, this historic building was home of the Belk Store from 1894 to 1938. The building served many purposes after the Belk store closed, most notable Gambles Drug Store. In 1970, the Belk family donated the building to the Waxhaw Woman’s Club and restorations were made. Currently, the Waxhaw Woman’s Club rents out the building for community events, private parties, and special occasions.
HISTORIC DISTRICT The Waxhaw Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. Residential architectural styles represented are Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, vernacular triple-A forms and Craftsman. Predominantly residential areas are located north and south of Main Street. In addition to the commercial and residential building types, outbuildings, churches, industrial buildings, a school and a water tower are also present in the district.

WAXHAW LIBRARY The Waxhaw Branch Library has over 17,000 items, including books, DVDs, videos, books on tape and CD, young adult books, genealogy, CDs, CDROMs, magazines, newspapers and more. There are seven computers for adults and two computers for children, in addition to two online public access computers. The Waxhaw Branch Library serves Waxhaw, Mineral Springs and the southwest region of Union County. It’s conveniently located near downtown in the Historic District. The Library Association of Waxhaw is working hard to raise funds for a newer, larger facility.
WAXHAW READING ROOM BOOKSTORE This store is sustained by contributions of money, books, and volunteer time. The bookstore accepts used book donations and in turn resells the books to the public. All proceeds are directed to the Waxhaw Library to support a new larger town library and associated operational costs. Waxhaw Reading Room Used Bookstore offers a wide variety of books at discounted prices. The inventory changes daily as your friends and neighbors bring in their used books. The store moved its location in the summer of 2014.

ANDREW JACKSON STATE PARK Located just south of Waxhaw, in Lancaster County, SC, this state park is dedicated to the U.S. President, Andrew Jackson. With 360 acres, there is a combination of history, art and family fun. The lake is small but peaceful and quiet with no gas motors allowed. You can fish or rent one of the paddle boats for a fun-filled day. Other park amenities include nature trails, campground, picnic facilities, replica of a late 18th-century one-room schoolhouse, and an amphitheatre. CANE CREAK PARK With 1,050 acres of land, this is the largest recreation facility in the county. A number of activities are available to the public including hiking trails, bike trails, camp sites, cabin rentals, boat rentals, beach and swimming area, volleyball courts, and a miniature golf course. TOWN CREEK PARK Waxhaws newest park, Town Creek Park, officially opened in October 2014 and also featured the opening of 12 Mile Creek Greenway. PATRIOTIC CEREMONIES The Town of Waxhaw is steeped in military history and very proud of its military service members, both past and present. Waxhaw is perhaps best known for the July 4th parade and fireworks show. The parade takes place on Main Street in Waxhaw and is attended by over 12,000 enthusiastic revelers. The day culminates in the evening with a fireworks display that is sure to light up the sky.
AUTUMN TREASURES This two day event, held in October, highlights some of our finest local artisans and crafters. MAIN STREET EVENTS First Fridays occur the first Friday of the month from April thru December. These events provide an opportunity for Waxhaw’s downtown establishments to stay open later so more people can explore what the local merchants have to offer. Each months is based around a theme and merchants host events that are tied to the planned theme. Spring Promotion is a great event that features local retail specially designed to help you spruce up your home and your image. Jammin’ by the Tracks Concert Series features live music with historic downtown Waxhaw as the backdrop. Held every Friday night June through August, spectators enjoy these family-friendly concerts by local singers and bands. National Night Out is an annual event held nationally on the first Tuesday in August. Neighbors come together with local law enforcement agencies to raise crime and drug prevention awareness and to send a message to the criminals that the communities are organized and are fighting back to discourage criminal behavior. This safe and fun event is a great opportunity for you and your family get to know the public servants that are dedicated to keeping you safe. GingerSnap 5K & Girls on the Run includes over 1500 runners taking to the streets of Waxhaw during the GingerSnap 5K and Girls on the Run race on the first Saturday in December. Senior Citizens Christmas Party is a town-sponsored party held the first Friday in December. Waxhaw residents are invited to enjoy a Christmas dinner courtesy of several Waxhaw area restaurants, camaraderie, entertainment and Christmas cheer. Waxhaw Christmas Parade is held downtown on the second Sunday in December and features local school marching bands, and entries and floats by hundreds of businesses and members of the community. After the parade, kids can have a snack with Santa and check in with him one last time before Christmas. Santa's Ride Thru the Neighborhoods is a partnership with the North Pole and the Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department. Santa makes an appearance in 31 Waxhaw neighborhoods the week before Christmas. Due to his hectic schedule, Santa doesnot stop in the neighborhoods but drives by waving and wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas.

INCUBATOR FOR LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS SEES GROWTH WRITTEN BY REBECCA T. DICKINSON
Waxhaw business owner, Karen Johnson, is the force behind Waxhaw Entrepreneurs (WE), the business incubator that has taken shape in Waxhaw over the past couple of years. Johnson and the Waxhaw Business Association (WBA) began the program to help those people that are interested in starting a business. According to Johnson, WE also served as a way to help people struggling in the economy. “Initially, we wanted it to be a place people could come get help and utilize the WBA,” Johnson said. “Everything you could think of that a new business would need, we had somebody to represent the WBA with that position, which also in turn helped them get clients.” Since its beginning, the Town of Waxhaw and members of the WBA have contributed time, materials and space to help potential business owners. WE calls them, “clients.” It is a community organization and non-profit business incubator. WE lets businesses use its space at 216 W. North Main Street in downtown Waxhaw for meetings or as a business space. For the most part, the space is used for free or rented at a low cost because of how WE is funded and supported through the WBA. Currently, the Waxhaw Farmer’s Market is one of the businesses using the space for monthly meetings. Six primary mentors from the WBA donate time to lead seminars or workshops about legal matters or business plans with WE clients. The number of clients varies
depending on who WE is helping and the time of year. According to Johnson, some clients will come up with great ideas and then realize they require more than originally expected. “Instead of talking about what your business should look like, let’s talk about what you’ve done already,” Johnson said. “Where are you getting stuck at? Which piece of this doesn’t work? Once you get stuck on one thing, it seems like you’re in a circle and you can’t get out of it. If somebody else looks at it, they might say, ‘There it is.’” By working with the Town of Waxhaw and the WBA, WE combines people, resources and space. Resources include mixing the computer age with traditional brick-and-mortar businesses. Johnson said that WE also helps clients - some of whom include established, but struggling businesses - embrace online options. “You need a forum or someone to bounce ideas off of,” Johnson said. “There are coaches who know how businesses have struggled. It helps the established businesses be a little bit more conscious...computers and all of the technology makes it hard to connect if you’re still doing business the same way.” Local business owner, Shane Fraser, helps WE clients connect their businesses online through social media like Facebook and LinkedIn. about what language to use online to get attention. This includes keywords. According to Johnson, she will lead another seminar in spring 2015. Besides growth and incorporating technology into its program, WE has also had success with tech-based businesses in Waxhaw. Johnson said that getting businesses like Ken Adleglass’ Waxhaw Kid Coders brings the twenty-first century to Main Street in a way few other towns offer. Adleglass is an example of WE’s successful clients. He rented WE’s downtown space until he opened his own office. Waxhaw Kid Coders helps children learn about future business opportunities, and experience technology in a way “kids don’t learn about in a book,” Johnson said. “When they can relate the information to something they’re doing, they’re learning without even realizing it,” Johnson said. Adleglass provides a variety of services from teaching community courses about computer safety to one-on-one computer skills at an alternative school. Clients come from all backgrounds, training and expertise. Some, who have been told they’re “too old to work” and have lost their jobs, give a lot to WE through advice and leadership. Ambitious college graduates also work with them. “The economy is affecting different types of people, including those with successful careers and have lost them,” Johnson said. “They have expertise and they’re educated.”
An incubator is like learning to ride a bike with training wheels. The benefit of starting with an incubator, like WE, gives clients the chance to start a business with little money. Natalie Biaz, a graduate of the Art Institute of Charlotte, had wanted to open a bakery in Waxhaw. With the help of WE, she learned that there is a need and want for a bakery, but she did not find the space that she wanted. “She is currently in the Charlotte area, but she is keeping that connection with Waxhaw,” Johnson said. WE keeps her informed as to available space, but it also helps her with catering opportunities in Waxhaw. She recently catered a WBA monthly breakfast meeting. WE is open to helping new clients or open to mentors with expertise for potential business owners. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teen drivers. Using research as a guide, State Farm® is dedicated to improve teen driver safety by engaging teens while they learn to drive in a supportive and positive way. Cuthbertson High School was one of 100 winning schools earning a $25,000 grant for its participation in the State Farm’s “Celebrate My Drive” campaign during the month of October 2014. Cuthbertson High was among 3,283 registered
high schools across the nation and acquired enough safe driving commitments during a 10-day period to maintain a spot in the top 100 and secure a $25,000 grant. The high school plans to use the grant towards student and staff initiatives, instructional resources, and safe driving programs. This community celebration of safe driving habits emphasizes the benefits of safe choices as teens celebrate the freedom that comes with getting a driver’s license.
UCPS outperforms state average as ACT scores increase Results from the ACT college readiness exam showed that the average test scores for the 2014 graduates of the Union County Public School district rose in English, math, reading and science. The overall composite increased from 19.9 in 2013 to 20.3 in 2014.
In addition, UCPS outperformed the state in all areas. The ACT consists of curriculumbased tests in four areas: English, math, reading and science. It is designed to measure the skills needed for success in first year college coursework.

World Record Attempted
In celebration of Arbor Day, the Waxhaw Beautification Committee attempted to beat the world’s largest tree hug record! The event took place in October, 2014 at the United Methodist Church. Those who participated hugged a tree for 125 seconds in recognition of Waxhaw’s 125th Anniversary. The weather did not cooperate for the event and the world record was not broken that day. However, 125 tree huggers of all ages had a great time showing their appreciation and love for trees.

Waxhaw Honors Fallen Veterans A rememberance ceremony was held December 13, 2014 at Waxhaw’s Military Wall of Honor as part of Wreaths Across America Day. Evergreen wreaths topped with red velvet ribbons were presented.

Wreaths Across America began in 1992 when Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company in Maine, found himself with a surplus of wreaths at Christmas, according to the organization's website. That year, the businessman decided to to use the extra wreaths to decorate headstones at Arlington National Cemetery, a practice that continued in subsequent years.
The ceremony gained national recognition in 2005 when a picture of headstones adorned in wreaths and blanketed in snow in the Arlington National Cemetery circulated on the Internet. The practice grew in popularity and in 2008 Congress declared December 13 as “Wreaths Across America Day”. The Civil Air Patrol Composite Squadron, MER-NC-300 and the American Post 208 took part in the ceremony to ensure that veterans who lost their lives are remembered and honored.

Apply for a Dog License All dogs within the vicinity of Waxhaw are required to be licensed by the town on an annual basis. Upon licensing an animal, the owner must show proof that the animal is current on rabies vaccinations by a licensed veterinarian. The yearly license date is from July 1 to June 30 the following year.
