2016 SWOSU SOCCER FACT BOOK
HEAD COACH MARK PERSSON Mark Persson has built the SWOSU Women’s Soccer program into a consistent contender since taking over the program in 2009 and he enters his eighth season with the Bulldogs in 2016. Persson is the winningest coach in program history, bringing a 68-55-12 (.548) record into this season. Persson is a two-time conference Coach of the Year with the Bulldogs, earning the honor for the Lone Star Conference in 2009 and again from the GAC in SWOSU’s record-setting 2012 campaign. His teams won back-to-back GAC regular season and tournament championships in 2012 and 2013 with a record of 16-1-2 against conference foes during that time. In seven seasons at the helm of the SWOSU Soccer program, Persson has seen several players earn postseason accolades including 12 All-Region selections, 43 All-Conference (Lone Star & Great American) picks and nine GAC specialty award winners, including three-time Defensive Player of the Year Kira Bertrand and two-time Goalkeeper of the Year Courtney Flores. The Bulldogs had a bounce-back season in 2015, reaching the 10-win plateau for the third time in the past four seasons. SWOSU finished 13-6-1 overall, including a third-place finish in the GAC regular season standings with a mark of 8-3-1. In the conference tournament, SWOSU

defeated No. 2-seed Ouachita Baptist to advance to their third GAC Championship game in four seasons, where they were defeated by tournament-host Harding. SWOSU had a program-record 10 players selected to the All-GAC teams in 2015, led by Goalkeeper of the Year Courtney Flores, who was one of four players to earn First Team All-GAC honors. Also earning a selection to the first team were Cori Kelly, Samantha Nunez and Kylee Bertrand while Nunez (Second Team) and Bertrand (Third Team) were also selected to the All-Central Region team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). A youthful Bulldog squad in 2014 was limited to two wins and missed the GAC Tournament for the first time, but his group had four players earn All-Great American Conference honors while defender Charlotte Eastman was named a Second Team All-Central Region choice by Daktronics. Her selection gives the Bulldogs an all-region selection in each of the past three seasons after not having a player earn allregion honors in the first 14 years of the programs existence. The 2013 squad repeated as GAC Champions by finishing the regular season 7-1-1, three points ahead of second-place Ouachita Baptist. The Bulldogs then cruised through the conference tournament, defeating East Central and Harding by a combined score of 7-0 to claim a second straight tournament championship. SWOSU just missed out

2016 SWOSU SOCCER FACT BOOK on a second straight bid to the NCAA Division II national tournament after they qualified in 2012. With the success of the team came several more postseason accolades. Kira Bertrand was named the GAC Defender of the Year for the second consecutive season while Courtney Flores earned both Goalkeeper and Freshman of the Year honors following a standout freshman campaign at SWOSU. The Bulldogs placed four on the All-GAC First and two more on the second team. In addition to those honors, Bertrand was named to the NSCAA All-Central Region First Team for the second straight season while Carbonara and Visor both earned second team all-region honors. Persson’s 2012 team became the first in school history to advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament, where they defeated Minot State 3-0 before falling to host Central Missouri by the same score in the second round of the Central Regional. The Bulldogs were the only team in NCAA Division II to complete the regular season without a loss, ending the season with a record of 20-1-1. For their efforts in 2012, the Bulldogs received several postseason awards including a very impressive sweep of the Great American Conference specialty awards: Josie Price was named the Offensive Player of the Year, Kira Bertrand won Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, Corey LaMoureaux was the Goalkeeper of the Year and Ashlee Beitinger earned Freshman of the Year. Persson completed the sweep with his Coach of the Year Award. Beyond that, Price was named a First Team All-Central Region and First Team All-American selection, becoming the first NSCAA All-American in SWOSU soccer history. Bertrand (First Team) and LaMoureaux (Third Team) joined Price on the All-Central Region team. Persson took over a program that had combined to win three games in the two seasons prior to his arrival. His teams won at least six games in each of his first three seasons before breaking through with the 20-1-1 record in 2012. Before coming to SWOSU, Persson had spent 12 years as a high school and college coach, the last eight of which were spent at Southern Nazarene University. At SNU, he initially served as the men’s head coach and posted a 100-33-14 in eight-plus years. His teams made five consecutive trips to the NAIA National Tournament and advanced to in the National Final 4 in 2005. He then served in the dual capacity as both the men’s and women’s head coach in the 2006 and 2007 before only coaching the women in 2008. In the 2008 season at SNU, his team finished with a 14-2-3 record and were ranked as high as No. 13 in the final NAIA poll. The SNU women went 32-19-7 in three years under his guidance, included back-to-back winning seasons in 2007 and 2008. A native of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, Persson is a 1996 graduate of SNU where he was a two-time NAIA All-American for the school. He then went on to play semi-professionally with the Oklahoma City Slickers before taking over the men’s and women’s coaching duties at Phillips University in 1997. He led the Phillips men to the 1997 Sooner Athletic Conference championship and was voted the league’s coach of the year, the first of now seven times that he received such an award. He remained in Enid after Phillips shuttered its doors in 1998 coaching both at Enid High School and later Northern Oklahoma CollegeEnid. Persson then moved to Bethany in 2001 when he joined the SNU coaching staff on a full-time basis. He and his wife Sheila, have three young children.

GREAT AMERICAN CONFERENCE The Great American Conference is one of the newest in NCAA Division II, first taking the field in the fall of 2011. Entering its fourth year of competition, the GAC continues to establish itself on the field of play against the very tough Central Region/Super Region 3. The NCAA announced on March 9, 2011 that the Great American Conference was officially accepted as the 23rd NCAA Division II athletics conference. Although the new league was new, it was a concept that had been informally discussed since the early 1990’s between institutions from Arkansas and Oklahoma. Nine charter members (Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, East Central, Harding, Henderson State, Ouachita Baptist, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southern Arkansas and Southwestern Oklahoma State) agreed to form a new NCAA Division II athletic conference in July 2010 and notified their respective leagues of the decision. In November of 2010, the league was stamped as the Great American Conference and announced in March of 2011 that it would become the 23rd active member conference in NCAA Division II. Will Prewitt, previously an associate commissioner of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), was selected as the first GAC Commissioner and appointed to his post one month before the league had officially been named. He is joined on staff by Associate Commisioner for Compliance Audra Tope, Assistant Commissioner for Communications Eric Moyer and Assistant Commissioner for Operations Stephanie Prewitt. The nine founding members began active membership within the NCAA Division II ranks on September 1, 2011. Earlier that summer, Southern Nazarene was accepted into the NCAA Division II membership process and they were extended a provisional invitation to join the GAC. Northwestern Oklahoma State also received a provisional invitation after being accepted into the process in the summer of 2012 and Oklahoma Baptist became the league’s 12th member when they started the process in 2015. Southern Nazarene became an active championship member of the GAC for the 2014-15 season. Northwestern Oklahoma State became an active member in 2015-16 and Oklahoma Baptist will do the same in 2017-18.
