PRAYOhio...Join us as we call on God’s power
PRAYOhio is an emphasis this summer to set aside specific times, plans, strategies and commitments to lift up Ohio to the Lord. This will be a statewide emphasis. We need your commitment and your help. We are all aware that we have no power apart from God’s power and purpose. All of the funds, abilities, resources, experience, and talent we may have are useless unless everything is first surrendered to the Lord. Actually, even if we have no funds, no abilities, no resources, no experience or no talent, God amazingly supplies us with what is needed if we renew our trust in Him and Him alone. This is a time to ask the Lord to do mighty works beyond our limited vision and abilities. We will be asking Him to guide, lead, renew, forgive, empower, and restore His work in Ohio. PRAYOhio will be dedicated to asking for a closer walk with the Master, more lost to come to the Lord, churches to be blessed, new churches to be planted, and baptisms to be increased. All of this will be done for His purpose and glory. Here is a summary of the three major events and names of the contact persons. You are encouraged to participate in all three of these events, however, if your schedules will not allow that we encourage you to participate in the ones that are possible. Information will also be on the SCBO website – scbo.org.
TEN DAY PERIOD OF PRAYER AND FASTING:
The dates for this will be June 21 - 30. These are the last ten days of June, so mark your calendars. You will have the option to pray and fast all ten of these days, five of these days, three, or one day. This will be left up to each individual and how God is leading you to participate. You may want to fast for three of these days, but space them out. Each day of these ten days will have a different prayer emphasis and focus. A ten day prayer booklet will be provided to guide you during these ten days. These can be requested from the SCBO office or you can go to scbo.org and download one. Even for those who choose to fast for only a day or so, we are asking you go ahead and use the booklet and join us in prayer during the entire ten days. For more specific information contact GaryOdom@scbo.org. We are asking you to sign up so we can rejoice with what the Lord is doing. Contact Charlotte Barbo at Cbarbo@scbo.org to sign up.
PRAYER DRIVE AROUND AND ACROSS OHIO:
The dates for this are July 17 – 18. The plan is to have cars with teams of prayer Warriors literally circling and crossing Ohio with prayer. Some will travel the entire 16 hours or more in cars, others may choose to join for a couple of hours or so. We will have teams crossing Ohio in prayer from North to South and East to West. Maps and routes have been determined and each team will receive prayer guides as you drive and pray through the cities and towns of Ohio. Each Association will be covered with this driving plan. Join us as we pray down Ohio during these two days. For more information contact SteveHopkins@scbo.org for more details and to sign up.
PRAYER WALKING TO REACH THE NATIONS:
The date for this is August 17. A large number of foreign born people live in Ohio. Most of them live in seven major cities. We will be prayer walking these seven cities to lift up these people to the Lord. They are here and we are here. No accidents happen in God’s planning. Let’s pray for them and ask God to do a mighty work through them. For more information contact CathyPound@scbo.org.
Let us all use this time to fast and pray, then prayer drive Ohio, then prayer walk Ohio. Let us be one great united prayer force that has “missionary eyes” and “missionary minds” and “missionary hearts” to see what God sees, to understand what God understands, and to feel what God feels!

2013 State Bible Drill Competition By Ashley Stickel State Bible Drill Representative Bible Teaching/Leadership Resource Group State Convention of Baptists in Ohio The 2013 State Bible Drill competition turned out to be a success all around once again. God is faithful and all participants were able to attend and compete at the drill. This year, we saw 26 drillers from High School Bible Drillers: L-R Stephanie Cavana5 different churches come to demugh (1st place winner), Jonathan Deitner (3rd place onstrate how they have memorized winner), Rachel Wiltshire, and Julia Bonifield (2nd and hidden God’s Word in their place winner). hearts. Every year I say it, but Bible Drill is an amazing program. It has been impressed on me again that it is so important to hide God’s Word in our hearts when we are young. It is important to learn and memorize His Word at any age, but the younger years really set the stage for the years to come. As is the case with any habit, once you start, it is very difficult to stop. It is my hope that these drillers will continue to make a habit of memorizing scripture, so much so that it will be impossible to stop, even when they graduate from the program. If you are interested in starting the Bible Drill program at your church, please contact me by email at Ashley@scbo.org or by phone at 614-827-1822. I would count it a pleasure to be able to help you get a group started that will change the lives of your children and youth forever. The outstanding drillers that participated in the State Competition at Reynoldsburg Baptist Church did a great job. I would like to recognize the first, second, and third place winners of the Youth and High School drills. In the Youth Drill, our third place winner was Nicolas DeSonia from First Baptist Church of Kettering. In second place was Thomas Bonifield also from First Baptist Church of Kettering and our first place winner of the Youth Drill was Elizabeth Kastelein of Parma Baptist Church. The High School third place winner was Jonathan Deitner of First Baptist Church of Kettering. Second place went to Julia Bonifield also from First Baptist Church of Kettering and first place in the High School Drill went to Stephanie Cavanaugh of Reynoldsburg Baptist Church. Elizabeth Kastelein and Stephanie Cavanaugh will be representing Ohio by traveling to Duluth, Georgia in June to participate in the National Invitational Tournament for Bible Drills. Great job everyone! I would like to say a special thank you to everyone who helps me during the year and especially leading up to and during the State Bible Drill Competition. I

I also want to thank Reynoldsburg Baptist Church for volunteering their facilities to host this event. You all are a blessing to Bible Drills in Ohio!
The Next Factor Sunday School Approach The Bible Teaching and Leadership Resource Group firmly believes in having a heart for leaders. We do our best to provide the most current and up to date training possible. That was evident at the National Sunday School Director Seminar. Sunday school and small groups leaders from across Ohio came together on April 13, 2013 to discover ways to advance their Sunday school ministries. 39 Sunday school directors, ministers of education, pastors and teachers spent time sifting through materials that could help them and their churches move their groups to the next level.
The day ended with these leaders ready to take on the challenge of advancing forward in the areas of Sunday school and small group. Everyone of them saw the need for improvement and how they could assist in making their Sunday school ministries more effective. Many of these leaders will come back with their pastors or other leadership members on June 1st to start the process of mapping out a strategic plan for their overall Sunday school or small group ministry. It is training like this that excites me

VBS Must Be About to Bloom
By Wendy Hammock Bible Teaching Leadership wehammock@scbo.org
The saying goes that “April showers bring May flowers.” Well, we are praying that the March and April VBS trainings (that were sowed throughout Ohio) will bring a colossal harvest this summer. We had well over 800 individuals come out and commit to reaching boys and girls, men and women and whole communities through the resource of Vacation Bible School. Ohio offered eight different opportunities for churches to bring their workers out for instruction on using 2013 VBS tools that will prayerfully bring both lasting and bountiful growth of their church. You may wonder why a veteran teacher might attend a clinic or VBSI after years on the job. I saw a teacher who has decades of teaching under her belt who attended both the state Vacation Bible School Institute and a regional clinic solely for the purpose of training and bring along other VBS personnel. In doing so, she became a Barnabas to them. We also had one of our facilitators report that a young adult lady confided to her that prior to attending the VBS training she did not believe she was capable of teaching and was afraid to try. She continued, that after just two hours at a VBS clinic she felt positive, competent and excited about the upcoming Vacation Bible School at her church. These are

just two examples of what can happen when you allow God to work through you and His kingdom work through VBS. After the sowing of the training seeds, comes the watering of prayer and then the harvesting of souls. Please be in prayer throughout the summer for the ministry of VBS all around the Buckeye State. We want to hear how your Vacation
Bible School goes and hope to hear from you whether by phone, email or VBS reports. These are so important to encourage those who are out in the fields as well. Please, keep those reports coming. We have some great things planned for the 2014 VBS year. Please know that we are praying for all of you as you conduct and carry out the great commission via VBS.

Cooperative Partnerships & Baptism By Randy Chestnut On Easter Sunday, Dayton urban church plant, Hope Community Church held its third baptismal service since launching in September of last year. “Baptisms are special anytime, but to get to do them on Easter is extra special, because now we have a live illustration of what the resurrection really means”, says Randy Chestnut, Hope Community’s pastor. According to Randy, these baptisms reflect the value of multiple partnerships. Hope Community is sponsored by the First Southern Baptist Church in Camden, OH, where Dr. Greg Jackson serves as pastor. Other Ohio Baptist churches that directly support Hope Community are the Springboro Baptist Church and the Urbancrest Baptist Church. Apex Community Church in Dayton is also a strong ministry partner. First Baptist Church in Woodstock, GA, is a na-

tional partner. Hope is supported by the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio, North American Mission Board and the Greater Dayton Association of Baptists. One person baptized on Easter really shows the power of partnerships. Blake is 12 years old. He attended a Backyard Bible Club at the Chestnut’s home last summer. The material for that BBC was provided by LifeWay through the Greater Dayton Association of Baptists, at no charge to Hope Community. Working at that BBC last summer were two NAMB summer missionaries, supported by the Cooperative Program and Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. Blake was baptized in a borrowed baptistery from Koinos Christian Fellowship, Troy, OH. “God is using multiple partnerships in our community to grow His Kingdom. Thank you Jesus and thank you, Southern Baptists!”

A Homegoing Theo Enoch Sommerkamp
Theo Enoch Sommerkamp, age 84, passed away just past 5 p.m. on April 19, 2013 from an infection; a Christ-loving father and husband who wanted everyone to be pointed to Christ. A Missionary Journalist, Theo spent his life in work for his Lord Jesus both in the United States and in Europe. He was Editor of the Ohio Baptist Messenger, nearing 20 years from 1976 until 1994. Theo met his wife Jean at Oklahoma Baptist University, and the two were married for 60 years before Jean left for Heaven on December 25, 2011. Theo and Jean were thankful for the influence of Baptist churches, colleges and other Baptist ministries. Theo is survived by his sister, Micki Stella and husband Tony, lifelong Baptist missionaries to Korea now retired in Texas, and by his sister in law Doris Keller and her husband Bill, devoted Christians in Washington state; by his sons, Bradley and Karl; daughter, Julie; and by four precious grandchildren, Kimberly, Clayton, Garrett
and Samantha; as well as the dear spouses of his three children, Chris, Lyuda and Frank; and by Jennifer, the spouse of grandchild Clayton. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jean Childers Sommerkamp, and parents Theodore and Mozelle Sommerkamp who awaited his arrival in Heaven. Theo strove to share his Lord Jesus, and how Jesus died to redeem us, with all whom he came in contact with, and prayed for the needs of all he met including those who cared for him. His love for Christ radiated through him in this way to those, who entered his life. He was “Conveyed to Heaven
on a train commissioned by Jesus” per Theo, a strong railfan. The train, the ‘Canadian Pacific’, had conducted him on one of the best train rides of his life while on earth. The family is grateful to those who lovingly and patiently cared for Theo and Jean in the last months of their lives: Worthington Christian Village and Odyssey Hospice. At the family’s request, public funeral services will not be held. Instead, family members will hold a closed home prayer meeting. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Theo’s memory are preferred to the International Mission Board, 3806 Monument Ave., P.O. Box 6767, Richmond, VA 23230-0767 or visit https:// netcommunity.imb.org/SSLPage.aspx?pid=229 for online contributions in Tribute. Online guestbook at http:// www.legacy.com/obituaries/ dispatch/. Ohio
We all know that prayer is the
powerful force that reaches the heart of God, therefore we are going to strategically set aside specific times to pray. We invite all Ohio Southern Baptists to join us as we ask God’s grace and power to pour down on Ohio. June 21 – 30: This will be a ten day period of praying and fasting. Some of you may want to sign up for one day, others for two or three days or more. Some may want to pray and fast for the entire ten days. More details will be provided when you sign up. A ten day prayer booklet will be provided as a guide. Each day will emphasize a different prayer need. One day we will be praying for pastors in Ohio to preach with conviction power and for God to give them vision, the next day will be for more baptisms, the next for church planters, etc… Contact Gary Odom at GaryOdom@scbo.org or his cell, 614-309-9743.
July 17 – 18: This will be a prayer drive around and across Ohio. Each association will be touched. Cars with prayer teams will circle Ohio in prayer and cross Ohio in prayer asking for God’s power to bless Ohio. The lost in Ohio as well as churches will be prayed for during this time. A guide will be provided each team. Let’s pray down Ohio during these two days. Contact Steve Hopkins at SteveHopkins@scbo.org or his cell, 614-309-9746. Collegiate Missions in NYC By Kale Booher Student Pastor LifePoint Church My name is Kale Booher, and I have the privilege of serving as the Student Pastor of LifePoint Mount Vernon, the second campus of LifePoint Church Columbus. I and the pastoral team have been working in Mt. Vernon since August 2012, and the church had its first service on February 17, 2013. As the student pastor, my main goal has been to create a collegiate ministry for the church by reaching out to students at Mt. Vernon Nazarene University and Kenyon College. Currently, we have about 35-45 students attending the church and 35-40 collegians involved in three Life Groups that meet weekly between the two campuses. When the church launched in February, spring break was nearing. At that time, it seemed an impossibility to mobilize the very new and very small collegiate ministry on the mission field any time soon. The students, however, insisted on utilizing that free time to help those still struggling with the wake of Hurricane Sandy. I rushed to the few contacts I had through the North American Mission Board and after a couple phone calls and a few emails, I was able to connect with the Southern Baptist Relief Association in Staten Is-
land. So, we grabbed a van and a few tools, and went off to join in God’s activity there. From March 11-15, 2013, I had the opportunity to take seven students on a mission trip to New York City. We teamed up with other college groups from around the country and the Southern Baptist Relief Association to do demolition and repair work on the northern side of Staten Island, an area hit extremely hard by Hurricane Sandy. By all measures, this trip was a “win.” On our last night of the trip, I took a little time with my students to process what had happened throughout the week. I asked about their favorite moment, their most challenging moment, and the one thing God had taught them throughout the week. All seven of my students gave thoughtful, meaningful responses. One said that he knew that he had been neglecting God since he arrived at college and needed to make some changes in his life. Another student was so inspired by his time there that he wanted to find a way to stay and do more work. The drive to New York was ten hours, and the trip there had been a lot of fun. The ten hours back to Mount Vernon had a completely different tone. Something had changed. The students had bonded, and even formed a group identity. Two of the girls who barely

knew each other at the beginning of the trip were riding back to Ohio engaged in deep, godly conversations about relationships. I drove and kept to myself, quietly observing and beaming inside. I’m sure a lot of student pastors could tell this story many times over, but to me it was unique. This was my first time leading a mission trip, twenty-three years old, and not even a year out of college. Our faithful God placed not only people but entire organizations in my life to walk alongside me in ministry and make this trip possible. For example, I could never have coordinated or implemented this life-changing mission experience to New York without NAMB, who also currently supports me financially as a Church Planting Intern. I believe college represents one of, if not the, most strategic area of ministry in our nation today. I saw, during my own college years, friends and classmates lose their faith, leave the church, and struggle to find authentic Christian community. I pray God uses me to change this situation on our campuses, and I’d like to personally thank NAMB and the Southern Baptist Relief Association for joining me in the battle, and every last-minute mission trip along the way.

Pastor Bede Karidaya and wife, Mongali receiving 48 Tabitha Kits of Kindness from Ebenezer Baptist Church.
The world now calls Ohio home. The nations, our foreign born sisters, live in our communities. Jesus calls those who invite strangers in, “Blessed.” (Matthew 25:34-35) Joppa, a coastal community northwest of Jerusalem on the Mediterranean Sea was also home for many nationalities. Tabitha, a first century disciple, was known in Joppa as the woman who abounded in deeds of kindness. Scripture includes in her story the Greek form of her name, Dorcas. Her kindness crossed cultural barriers. (Acts 9:36-42)

Are You Ready to Worship…Everywhere? Where does worship happen for your church? Of course, most of us worship during regular services, in the sanctuary. But if your church is like most, you probably also share your faith at many other times, in many other places—and you probably use a lot of copyrighted music in the process. As the school year ends and summer nears, you’ll soon be organizing picnics and barbecues, vacation Bible school, and summertime small group studies. Whether it’s a guitarist leading a few Bible study participants in praise choruses or a five-piece 80s cover band entertaining the crowd at a potluck, planning for worship at these events requires more than just choosing a few songs…there are also questions of copyright to consider. So, this month we’d like to give you a brief quiz to test your knowledge. My church needs a performance license in order to play music for our VBS programs. True or False? TRUE. When you play recorded music or perform songs outside of a religious service, your church needs a performance license from the song copyright owners, or with the performance rights organizations, ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. Your church VBS program does NOT qualify under the Religious Service exemption (U.S. Copyright Law (Section 110[3]) as a religious service, which covers “during the course of services at a place of worship or other religious assembly.” CCS’s PERFORMmusic License provides easy, immediate and cost effective performance blanket coverage for 16 million songs (Christian and secular) from ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. Our church summer camp programs need a performance license to cover playing music or performing songs during any camp activity or event. True or False?
TRUE: Camp programs often feature playing recorded music at various events and activities, as well as performing music at sing-alongs, concerts and during worship. These public performances and uses require performance licensing, and can be secured from individual song owners, or ASCAP, BMI and SESAC, or CCS’s PERFORMmusic License, which covers 16 million songs.

If we make a memory video of a youth event or mission trip, we need a synchronization license to feature a song or background music with the video. True or False?
Donna Banks Customer Service, Vice president of Operations, Atrium Medical Center
TRUE: You need a synchronization (sync) license to legally reproduce a copyrighted song in timed relation with visual images; e.g., motion pictures, video, promo audiovisuals, etc. Requests for sync licenses can be denied by the publisher, so it’s important to obtain a license prior to producing the video. In addition, publishers can set any rate they want for these licenses. If you also reproduce a third party’s recording of the song, you will also need to get a master sync license from the owner of the recording, which is a separate copyright from the musical composition. CCS’s PERMISSIONSplus service can secure sync and master licenses for videos and pay royalties on your behalf. Blessings in your summertime ministry activities! Please call our Christian Copyright Solutions hotline number 1-855-5SOLVER (1-855576-5837) to discuss your specific questions and licensing needs. FOCUS
on Multicultural Ministries
Ringing His Praises By Rev. Brian Picard Pastor of Northside Baptist Church Youngstown, OH On April 28, 2013 the Northside Baptist Church dedicated their new bell and steeple to the glory of God. The story behind this bell spans over a five years period of time from the moment that God promised it to us until it was set in place. In the spring of 2008, a local Episcopal church closed it doors and sold or donated most of its inventory. Northside had been blessed with some of those things. I had also inquired about the bell that was on the church’s roof. I believed God wanted our church to have it but the more I inquired about it nobody knew its fate. About two years had passed and one day as I was driving by the closed church, I saw someone cutting up the 20 foot cross that had been on the outside of the building. I soon discovered that they were
converting the church building into a mosque. The Imam said they had no use for anything that had a cross on it. Then I inquired about the bell, noting that the steeple had a cross on it. He said if I wanted it, I could have it for free. I didn’t have to think hard on that one. We willingly accepted the “gift,” after all God had promised it to me two years previous. Through the united effort of the church and a donation of a local fabricating plant, the bell and steeple now rest at their new home, once again ringing praises for which they were designed. There are many lessons that we have learned from this episode but I think the most valuable is that just like the bell we were designed to sing His praises and no matter what we go through nobody should be allowed to silence us. Acts 4:20, “For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”
Multicultural Ministries Cincinnati—Six years ago God gave the Korean Power Mission Baptist Church a vision to reach other people groups. Two years ago we started English Speaking services. As a result the church has changed its name to Power Mission Baptist Church and started M2 Ministries (Multicultural). Since then, there has been an increase in attendance with people from over eight different countries. About 60 percent of the entire congregation is students and many of the new people are from the four local universities in the greater Cincinnati area. God is up to something unique and different here as this comes together. Our world is becoming more global, so is the mindset of this next generation. Part of the church’s vision is to ‘De-Segregate’ the church. So, it’s exciting to watch American, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese and Europeans all connecting and worshipping the True God in one church setting. Our worship services are energetic, and Contemporary combined with messages that relate and connect with a generation not really seeking ‘Cool Church’, but ‘Real God!’ Recently we had a young lady from Sweden tell her story
about coming to the church, helping a mission group in Ethiopia, there becoming a ‘Christ-Follower’, and now on her way to nursing school. One of our ladies has started a Women’s bible study group for both American and Asian women. We are beginning a “Young Professionals ‘ ministry as well. It’s a privilege to be a small part of what God is doing among these young people from various places around the globe and various denominational and religious backgrounds. Many who attend the church are temporary and are in the states for short periods of time. Rather than building large crowds, God has given us the assignment of influencing across the globe as we touch and minister to people then send them off to other places. Blessings! How to become a
Christian If you are not a Christian, have never surrendered your will to the Lord Jesus, let me share briefly how you can make this life changing decision. GOD WANTS YOU SAVED. First, you must believe that God loves you and wants you to have peace in your heart and an everlasting life (John 3:16). Second, you must recognize that you are a sinner, that you have done things which have displeased God and that you have separated yourself from Him (Romans 3:23; 6:23). Third, you must believe that Jesus came to this earth, was actually God in the flesh, lived a perfect life, and yet went to a cruel cross, dying for your sins, paying once and for all the penalty of sin (I Peter 2:24). However, it’s not enough just to know these three things.
Many of us knew them for years before we ever gave Jesus our lives. Fourth, you must personally ask Jesus to come into your life and forgive you of your sins (Revelation 3:20). You can pray this prayer now and if you mean it with all of your heart, Jesus will come in just like He said. He cannot lie. Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I’m really sorry for my sins, Lord. I ask you now, Lord Jesus, to come into my heart, forgive me of my sins, take control of my life, and make me the kind of person You want me to be. I now receive You into my heart. Thank You for coming in. I will follow You all the days of my life. In Your name I pray, Amen.
Camden Men Matt. 4:19 Fish Fry April 20th in preparation for Revival, 87 Men came together at the First Southern Baptist Church of Camden for a special night. The men cooked over 500 pieces of crappie that they had caught and were challenged by Pastor Greg Jackson and his dad Fred Jackson, a member of FBC Vandalia, along with Evangelist, David Burton, State Evangelism Director of Florida. Two men made professions of faith.
Fred Jackson, father of First Southern Baptist Camden’s Pastor Greg Jackson shares what fishing has taught him about faith.

Press toward the Mark Mission Ohio is the cooperative effort of Southern Baptists to reach at least 1,000,000 believers in 2,020 congregations by the end of the year 2,020. This is the Mission Ohio 2020 Vision. Prayer is essential to realize the Mission Ohio 2020 Vision. Southern Baptists will gather in Houston, Texas June 11-12 for the annual Southern Baptist Convention. Worship and fellowship form the main features of each convention. Yet, the main reason for the convention is missions. Fred Luter, the President of the Southern Baptist Convention, preached at the 2012 annual meeting of the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio. Ohio Southern Baptists will convene November 6-7, 2013 at the Perrysburg French Quarter Holiday Inn in Perrysburg, Ohio for the 2013 annual meeting of the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio.
