Ahlan wa sahlan fi Dubai – Welcome to Dubai Few destinations embrace change quite as much as Dubai, and 2016 has certainly been a year that has seen numerous additions to the city’s portfolio of attractions. The iconic Dubai Opera opened at the end of August in Downtown’s new Opera District to a fanfare of applause for a non-stop line-up of world-renowned sopranos, magicians, chart-toppers, orchestras and casts from London’s West End. Bringing the house down every night, the opening has clearly elevated the city’s status as a regional centre for the arts and a cultural hub. However, taking centre stage in a big way this year have been families. Screams of terror and delight in equal measure have been heard coming from the world’s largest indoor theme park, IMG Worlds of Adventure, with the year culminating with the opening of not one, but three theme parks, plus a water park to boot, courtesy of Dubai Parks and Resorts. What’s more, the focus on families has witnessed a plethora of new openings. The new district of City Walk in the Jumeirah neighbourhood is now home to several family-friendly attractions, such as Hub Zero, the region’s first immersive
entertainment park; the indoor rainforest that is The Green Planet; and Mattel Play! Town where children’s best loved TV characters come to life. Meanwhile Kite Beach has clearly been developed in favour of families, now providing changing facilities and a string of familyfriendly cafes and children’s attractions. Yet, the momentum continues well into 2017 with the opening of Dubai Safari – a guaranteed hit with all generations. To celebrate Dubai’s focus on families, we’ve encapsulated all they need to know, from restaurants and tours, to shops and hotels, in our special 32-page Family Focus section starting on page 39. HYSTERIA Can’t get enough of horror films and Stephen King novels? This one is for you. Dubai’s first haunted house has opened in The Dubai Mall, and the appropriately named Hysteria attraction is guaranteed to give you goosebumps. Following the creepy story of a family whose children vanish in the night, thrill-seekers take a tour of their home, encountering all sorts of gruesome and ghoulish nightmares – in the dark, of course. The experience lasts 15 minutes, features strobe lighting and isn’t recommended for those aged under 15 years. hysteria.ae SARUQ AL HADID MUSEUM In the historic Shindagha district is a museum where you can see some of the UAE’s most exciting archeological discoveries, from bronze artefacts to animal skeletons. TAKE THE TROLLEY Chug along Downtown’s Mohammad Bin Rashid Boulevard in the Dubai Trolley. What may look like a charming, old-fashioned wooden tram is actually powered by hydrogen and electricity. Maximum Height is 2.08m Spider-Man Doc Ock’s Revenge Zone: Marvel The Experience: There are two roller coasters on this track – red for Spider-Man and green for Doctor Octopus. The carriages spin on both as you’re whizzed through the New York skyline and plunged into a dark tunnel as the battle ensues.
Fear factor: This is one hell of a dizzy ride, so hold onto your hats. Height restrictions: 1.05m accompanied by adult, 1.20m alone. Thor Thunder Spin Zone: Marvel The Experience: Be prepared to be spun like a chicken on a rotisserie. What’s more, you’ll move up and down at the same time while water jets tease you from below. You’ll be stuck firmly to your seat (dangling upside down at times) as Thor, the Mighty Avenger, attempts to rescue you from the clutches of Loki, God of Mischief. Fear factor: High. Only for the adventurous. And best to let your dinner go down before taking your turn. Height restrictions: 1.40m. Maximum height is 1.95m The Velociraptor Zone: Lost Valley-Dinosaur Adventure Experience: Four loops of unadulterated speed. You’ll blast off on this 1.1km rollercoaster propelled at up to speeds of 100km/h in 2.5

You’ll be turned 360 degrees as your carriage flies through the air as the Powerpuff Girls battle against Mojo Jojo’s evil robot to save the world before bedtime. Fear factor: Hold on tight – this is scarier than you think. Height restrictions: 1.35m and above. 1.25m accompanied by adult. Predator Zone: Lost Valley-Dinosaur Adventure Experience: After a steep incline, be prepared to fall – and when we say fall, we mean vertically. This is one – if not the – sharpest drop tracks in the region. Your heart will plummet faster than the coaster. Fear factor: High. This is for diehard thrill seekers. Height restrictions: 1.25m and above. THE ENTERTAINMENT The Haunted Hotel Zone: IMG Boulevard Experience: More like self-inflicted torture than entertainment. Check into this hotel with caution – the staff have an ‘interesting’ idea of customer care. Expect zombies and ghosts at the most unexpected moments. 12. Disembark on the Deira side of the Creek and take in the mixed aroma of spices, herbs, dried limes, frankincense and mystery ingredients as they spill out of hessian sacks.
The complete tour can take from four to six hours depending on your pace, or you can dip into either side of the Creek and split it up. The area is well served by the Metro’s Green Line with Al Fahidi and Al Ghubaiba on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek and Al Ras near the Gold Souk on the Deira side. It’s also worth noting that if visiting on a Friday, much of this area is closed in the morning, opening in the afternoon.

Conference Call As one of the world’s primary business hubs, Dubai is the destination in which to seal the deal In the first eight months of 2016, Dubai Business Events (DBE), a division of Dubai Tourism and the emirate’s official convention bureau, secured 15 per cent more events compared to the whole of 2015. With 75 pitches for international meetings and congresses won in the first eight months alone, this is a clear demonstration that Dubai remains the region’s top spot for conferences, exhibitions and corporate incentives. This is affirmed in the 2015 International Meetings
Statistics report published by the Union of International Associations, which saw the city retain its number 14 position as the top business events destination. This position is particularly impressive when you consider that in 2013 Dubai ranked as the number 21 global destination for hosting business events. The events secured this year will be held over the course of the next four years and combined will bring 65,000 delegates to Dubai from around the world, as speakers, panellists, exhibitors and visitors. Secured business includes the 2017, Amway Achiever’s incentive programme, which rewards 3,400 top performers within Amway Korea. In the first eight months of 2016, traffic totalled 55,850,353 passengers up 6.9 per cent compared to 52,264,223 recorded during the same period 2015. It is projected that annual passenger numbers will reach 103.5 million by 2020. This growth is supported by Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC), Dubai’s second airport which opened in October 2013. Al Maktoum International will eventually become the world’s largest airport boasting a capacity of 200 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo per year. This airport infrastructure, combined with the connectivity provided by homegrown airlines, Emirates and flydubai, has shifted the global aviation map, ensuring that Dubai is the most accessible city in the world. This has been made all the more attractive following the easing of visa requirements that now sees all EU member countries eligible for a visa on arrival. Once on the ground, Dubai’s infrastructure is such that doing business here is easy. In September 2016, Dubai celebrated reaching the milestone of offering 100,000 rooms in hotels and hotel apartments in the emirate, with 138,000 expected by the end of 2018. Meet the Expert Nasif Kayed is a specialist in UAE culture, advising visitors and residents alike on the ways of the Emirate. He describes his nationality as “Muslim by faith, Arab by birth, Emirati by heart” How did this become your job? It started in the most unexpected way; I opened my first business at the age of 19, in Raleigh, North Carolina, a small town then in the US. My customers had so many questions about who I was, where I was from (I don’t think they’d seen an Arab before, and my heavy accent was quite a curiosity). I quickly realised that their image of Arabs and Muslims were mostly from pictures and movies, Lawrence of Arabia and the like. As political events unfolded in the early 1990’s especially the Gulf War, I became the go to among my colleagues about the “state of things”. I found a great deal of opportunity in having the chance to talk about Arabs and Muslims, Islam and culture to a community that had an appetite for firsthand information and knowledge. I found that my words really affected people; changed their attitudes and misconceptions. It is there that I began my journey as a cultural expert promoting peaceful coexistence among the multi-cultural fabric of my city and community. Today, I wish to reach the rest of the world; talking to people who visit, live and work in Dubai as I strive to build the bridges of tolerance while breaking down cultural barriers at every opportunity. As a cultural specialist, who meets tourists frequently, what questions are you often asked? I’m often asked... Are you all oil-rich Arabs? Does everyone get government money? Do women have rights, can they get an education and work? Why do Emiratis dress the way they do? Do all Muslims pray and how often? Do you have freedom of religion in the UAE? How do you feel being a minority in your own country? Are men and women equal?
And what are the most common misconceptions visitors have about the UAE? That as a visitor their freedom might be restricted, or simple things like not being able to hold hands with your spouse. That everyone here is rich and does not have to work. That there is no freedom of self-expression or freedom of religion. That Emiratis are not approachable. Women are forced to wear the traditional black abaya. Some people think that the country is new; that life in the UAE started with oil, and have no idea of our heritage and history as pearl divers, traders, horse and camel breeders, falconry and so on. And many think that because alcohol and pork are not permissible in Islam, that they are not available or served here. What three essential activities would you recommend for visitors and why? I would recommend for anyone visiting Dubai to venture into the historic part of the city, in particular the souks along Dubai’s historic Creek. Dubai has a rich history of trade founded on the Creek where fisherman, traders and pearl divers made their living. It’s a wonderful contrast to ‘New Dubai’ not to mention the opportunity to try out your bargaining skills. For world-class structures and the arts, The Dubai Mall, the Burj Khalifa and new Dubai Opera are must-see sights. The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world and there are panoramic views of the city from its observation decks, At The Top. Dubai’s new opera house brings first-class talent to the stage and holds performances year-round. For beach lovers, head to JBR and The Beach, which hosts an awesome selection of restaurants and outdoor activities and events. A visit to Dubai would not be complete without a trip to the desert for a camel ride and falcon encounter, dune bashing or dinner under the stars.

When visitors arrive in Dubai, what are key social, or etiquette, rules they should observe? Like I always say, public areas are rated “PG”. Be aware of what suits the place you are in at the time. For instance, beachwear is for the beach. Malls are family spaces. Mind your P’s and Q’s: cursing, foul language and unfriendly hand gestures are a no-no. During Ramadan there are rules and guidelines for eating and drinking in specific areas during the day. While holding hands with your spouse is welcomed, open expressions of affection in public are frowned upon especially in family spaces. Use common sense of your surroundings, and remember that Dubai caters to everyone visiting from everywhere, it’s a safe, tolerant and welcoming city.
Traditional music is played by our local bands during events throughout the city alongside a burgeoning art community mixing old and new styles. Where in Dubai can tourists get a real insight into the local culture? By visiting the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, home of the Dubai Museum, and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. At the top of the Creek in Al Shindagha is the Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House now a museum, and the Sarouq Al Hadid Museum, which houses artefacts dating back 5,000 years. Across the Creek on the Deira side you will find the Spice Souk, the oldest in Dubai and the Gold Souk. While in the area, you can also stop in at the Women’s Museum, featuring a history of women and their contributions in the city. From poetry to henna, music to art, the UAE has a rich culture. What makes it so unique? The UAE’s culture and landscape remained relatively unchanged up until the mid-20th century, before the discovery of oil. Pearl divers, fisherman and tradesman, farmers, herders, and Bedouin are still alive to share
their stories and traditions in a modern Dubai. Dubai is a city that expanded from bare desert to the tallest building in the world in the same generation. Poetry is still an integral part of the culture where verses lament the traditions and history that Emiratis hold dear. In Dubai, you can find traditional henna art as part of the beauty routine, just as it was for centuries. Traditional music is played by our local bands during events throughout the city alongside a burgeoning art community mixing old and new styles. What is little known or emphasised is the unique attitude Dubaians have had historically to welcoming people from other countries. Traders came from near and far who often made Dubai their second home, and the UAE has continued that rich tradition of welcoming visitors and residents alike. Can you explain characteristics of national dress for both men and women? Traditional dress is still a favourite in the Emirates,

Fashion has its influence, particularly in the women’s dress (abaya). While black is thought of as a hot colour, it’s popularity has remained, due to the fact that even with very light weight fabrics, black is discreet. It is well known that loose fitting lightweight clothing help keep us cool in the hot weather. On the other hand, white for men (kandora) has been the business, casual and formal wear keeping it simple and classic. with men wearing a white garment called ‘kandora’ and women wearing a black garment called ‘abaya’. But, the fashion industry has had a huge impact on women’s dress. Just recently, Emirati fashion designer Fatema Fardan showcased her designs on the runway during New York Fashion Week for the first time. Regionally, Dubai is the capital of fashion when it comes to the traditional abaya, which can be seen in a variety of designs and colours. On the other hand, there is a misconception that the local dress is somehow religious, and that the black is too hot for women living in such a climate. As I always say there are two principles that contribute to the national dress. First practicality, fulfilling the need to cover from the weather elements particularly sun and sandstorms. To cover is better; and if you look back at the way we dressed in the past we used to cover with fabrics rather than sun glasses, sunblock, hats, umbrellas. Secondly, it fulfils the principle of dressing modestly. All citizens, regardless of status, colour or gender wear a loose garment (worn previously by prophets and people of faith as seen in movies). The point here was to create an environment of equality in public; just like school uniforms. Of course things have changed and practicality and modesty are not the only reason as to why it’s worn today. Again, fashion has its influence, particularly in the women’s dress. Today, younger generations have a choice to wear traditional dress as they see fit. The population has expanded tremendously therefore one can blend easily in any fashion. Are there any mosques where non-Muslims can take a tour? The historic Jumeirah Mosque is open to visitors once a day six days a week and The Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque & Centre, located in Al Wasl, hosts visitors twice a day, six days a week. Outside of Dubai you can visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. What are your favourite restaurants where visitors can taste regional cuisine? My favourites are Al Fanar located in Jumeirah and Festival City, Seven Sands located at The Beach, and Logma at Boxpark. The must-try dishes are ‘machboos’, which is a rice dish prepared with chicken, fish or lamb, ‘salouna’, a tradition hearty vegetable stew served with chicken or lamb and ‘harees’, which is pureed wheat prepared with chicken or lamb. For breakfast, ‘chabab’, our version of the pancake, ‘ballateet’, a unique sweetened noodle dish, and ‘khamir’, a type of traditional baked bread served with creamed cheese or date syrup. Of course, for dessert, no meal would be complete without ‘lugamat’, fried dough balls served with traditional date syrup. What would you say to anyone planning a trip to Dubai? Set aside all misconceptions, stereotypes and perceptions. Come with an open mind to see, explore, touch, learn, and enjoy a culture full of authenticity and rich traditions. An amazing city of past, present and future, tolerance and acceptance of many cultures, from beaches, to desert, to mountains, all within a short distance of one another. Future Projects In such a dynamic city, the skyline is constantly changing as new and ever-more impressive projects break ground
THE TOWER Construction on The Tower has already begun, with developer Emaar revealing that it will cost Dhs3.7 billion to complete and once finished it will be 100 metres taller than the Burj Khalifa, clocking in at a minimum of 928 metres. The new tower will, in the words of H.H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai and Vice President of the UAE, “be as great as the Burj Khalifa and Eiffel Tower”. Inspired by Islamic architecture and a blooming lily, The Tower will have a delicate mesh-like structure, and will include a boutique hotel, restaurants, gardens, function halls and observation decks, with the team confirming that visitors will be able to go to the very top of the tower and stand on a 360 degree viewing platform. Located near Ras Al Khor, the city’s wildlife sanctuary, The Tower is due for completion in 2020, and will be the star of a new suburb that will feature eight million square feet of retail space, 39,000 apartments and homes, 22 hotels and another project called Dubai Twin Towers, plus a 4.5km Creek Boardwalk close to the sanctuary.

JUMEIRAH CENTRAL This enormous project by master developer Dubai Holdings will cover 47 million sq ft of space in the city, alongside Sheikh Zayed Road, adjacent to Mall of the Emirates. When complete, up to 35,000 residents will call it home and it plans to offer retail space and hotels containing 7,200 rooms, plus schools, offices and parking. Special features include climate-controlled arcades, a ‘multi-modal’ transport system with aerial gondolas and a network for the district’s cyclists.
DUBAI FRAME A focal point for Dubai, this huge structure – shaped like a picture frame – encourages visitors to look at both sides of the city; its heritage and its future. With two 150-metre towers linked by a bridge, you’ll be able to take in the skyline, while being part of it. There will also be a museum on the ground floor, which will showcase the transformation of the Emirate.

LA PERLE Prepare to be amazed. Created by the founding father of the iconic Cirque du Soleil, Franco Dragone, comes La Perle – Dubai’s first aqua-based show. With the stage being a gigantic pool holding 2.5 million litres of water, watch daredevil acrobats and artists dive from 35-metres high, swing at speeds of four metres per second and generally wow the crowds as they perform death-defying aerial and aquatic tricks. Even Dragone himself says La Perle will be the most technically advanced theatre production that he has ever produced. Permanently based in Dubai, shows will take place in a 1,300-seater theatre within Al Habtoor City, boasting more than 450 shows per year.

The most important thing to remember is that disruptive behaviour that can offend others is not acceptable and there is also zero tolerance when it comes to drink driving.
YES, IT IS SAFE As one of the most cosmopolitan and multicultural cities in the world, Dubai is an advocate for peace and stability. The security and safety of both visitors and residents is of paramount importance to the governments of Dubai and the UAE. As a result, Dubai is one of the safest places in the world, ranked in the top 20 safest cities by Aon Hewitt, with low crime rates, a stable government and a department of Dubai Police dedicated entirely to tourists. According to the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2015, the UAE as a whole is ranked third globally (out of 141 countries) for safety and security. Furthermore, the Social Progress Index, produced as part of an initiative launched by the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council, ranked the UAE as number one among 132 nations for the lowest level of violent crime and the lowest homicide rate.

YES, WOMEN ARE HIGHLY RESPECTED (AND THEY CAN DRIVE) Dubai is very proud of its stance on female empowerment – not just in the UAE but across the globe. Both the United Nations and the World Economic Forum have recognised the UAE for its success in promoting gender equality and the role of women, and women have been encouraged and empowered since the founding of the state. This policy, spearheaded by the country’s leadership and backed by the UAE Constitution, is reflected in the formation in May 2015 of a UAE Gender Balance Council, whose goal is to reduce the gender gap at work as well as strengthen the UAE’s position by making the country a role model in gender equality. Furthermore, in April 2014, the UAE ranked first out of 132 nations for treating women with respect in a World Economic Forum/Harvard Business School study comparing development and wellbeing. Some 42 per cent of visitors to Dubai in 2014 were women and 86 per cent of these indicated a high degree of satisfaction with their Dubai experience. Often women will have separate queues within government buildings – which can certainly be a benefit. And, hiring and driving a car is no problem for females.
YES, YOU CAN HOLD HANDS WITH YOUR PARTNER Dubai is a tolerant, cosmopolitan and open society – clearly demonstrated by the fact that its residents hailing from over 200 different nationalities live in harmony and it welcomes millions of visitors each year. Not causing offence to others is the rule of thumb, so be aware of your surroundings and those around you.
YES, DUBAI DOES HAVE A RICH CULTURE Wander and barter in the souks that have been working marketplaces for hundreds of years; ply the waters of the Dubai Creek in a traditional dhow; take a tour of stunning Jumeirah Mosque; explore the lanes of Al Fahidi and admire the beautiful wind towers and venture into the desert for a traditional Bedouin meal and falconry display – then you’ll see for yourself that Dubai is swathed in romantic Arabian traditions. Plus, with so many nationalities living in the emirate, where global traditions, attitudes, customs, religions and lifestyles merge harmoniously, Dubai has developed a culture that’s all of its own. This creative mix is clearly demonstrated in the plethora of music, art, theatre and literature on offer in this small city.

With year-round sunshine, Dubai is one place where you can certainly get a tan. So bring your swimwear and your holiday wardrobe. However, you must be sensitive to the local culture. Beachwear is perfectly fine for the beach or beside the pool. When in other public areas, such as shopping malls, restaurants and parks, more modest dress is required. Clothing should not be revealing or seethrough. To access government buildings a strict dress code must be abided by – shoulders and knees must always be covered. Contrary to belief, women do not have to wear a headscarf, unless they are visiting a mosque. However, having a pashmina at hand is a good tip – not only does it act as a wonderful way to cover shoulders, but it’s perfect for heeding off the cold air conditioning.
