Welcome
Welcome to Buchanan Castle Golf Club Yearbook. For several generations the Montrose family, having had an association with the game of golf for about 400 years, have sought to develop Buchanan Castle into one of the leading quality Scottish Golf Clubs. Steeped in history and set in the most picturesque heart of Scotland, the course and landscape continue to inspire and delight members and visitors. I am proud to know that the course is appreciated by golfers from all over the world and look forward to maintaining and building on our reputation in the future. A warm welcome awaits you.

Foreword As Captain, I am pleased to welcome you on behalf of Buchanan Castle Golf Club, its members and staff to our inaugural yearbook. It is intended to provide members, visitors and potential new members some useful information about the club, its history, current activities and to provide information on the pleasures of playing a James Braid parkland course in such a beautiful rural location. This year has seen the course develop with the re-alignment of the 3 holes, the provision of a driving range and the new Academy Par 3 Course. The course and clubhouse are set against quite magnificent scenic backdrops close to the picturesque village of Drymen within the Loch Lomond National Park. Plans are in hand to refurbish the clubhouse over the winter and care will be taken to preserve the ambience we all enjoy.
I hope you will all enjoy the golfing year and wish you success in the various competitions but if you are not participating, just relax and enjoy bounce games with your friends. At Buchanan Castle, a warm welcome is always extended to visitors and guests and whether on the course or in the clubhouse I am sure you will leave with memories of a wonderful day amidst some of the best scenery in the West of Scotland. I hope the yearbook will give you a ‘flavour’ of Buchanan Castle Golf Club and look forward to welcoming current members, new members and visitors to the Club.
George Davison Captain
Club History Buchanan Castle Golf Club‚ a special tranquil place providing an almost tangible tonic to the system. The course lies on the plain of the Endrick, close to the picturesque village of Drymen. Less than one mile from Loch Lomond, it is set against quite stunning scenic backdrops. To the East and the North West, beyond the bonnie, bonnie banks, there is the beginning of the highlands and the magical mountains of Arthur, Vane, Vorlich, Lui and Ben Lomond itself. Designed in 1936 by James Braid, it offers players of all levels, an intriguing but fair golfing challenge.
By historical standards, Buchanan Castle Golf Club is a relative newcomer among Scottish courses, being established in 1936. St. Andrews, where golf was played on the links from around 1400, went through a period of ‘golf developments’ before becoming the possessor of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club in 1754. Glasgow Golf Club was founded in 1787 and it is the ninth oldest club in the world. Hilton Park, established in 1927, opened for play in June 1928. It is an amalgamation of the Glasgow North Western Golf Club and the Bankhead Club. These clubs lost their courses when the land was used for housing development by the Glasgow Housing Association. The two Clubs decided to buy suitable land and purchased an area of moor and hill land belonging to the Duke of Montrose. Elsewhere other courses have been laid out on former ‘ducal’ land but Buchanan is probably unique in having a Duke as its owner. The clubhouse was built on the site of the ancient Buchanan House, home of the Buchanan Family which had held lands on Loch Lomondside since the 13th century. The Graham Family, the Dukes of Montrose, bought the estate in the 17th century later rebuilt much of it and have held it since.
6
1724 saw the rebuilding of Buchanan House and a grand house is was. It had a frontage of 230 feet, was three stories high and had flanking blocks on either side. The architect, William Adam, contributed to alterations in 1731. The house burned down in 1852, but the present clubhouse, completed in 1936, incorporates some of the surviving walls. After this disaster, the Montrose family built the Castle which you see as you drive up the approach road. In the 1930’s, it became a hotel and during the war, it was used as part of the hospital set up in the grounds of the estate which was later used for convalescing soldiers. Among other things, the Montroses were much involved in the breeding and training of racehorses and kept a large establishment at Newmarket, as they did at Buchanan Castle. The ground on which the golf course is laid out was used as a racetrack, and for training gallops. Their greatest success was the 1878 Derby Winner, Sefton, ridden by Harry Constable. It is commemorated in the name of the 18th hole of the course, and in a huge oil painting of the horse and jockey and attendants which graces the clubhouse. The club’s elegant dining room displays the portraits of the Montrose Family.

Corporate Golf From blue-chip companies to small, family run enterprises corporate golf is a modern phenomenon an integral part of the modern business world, where work and pleasure meet, partnerships are forged, relationships cemented and friendships made. At Buchanan Castle we recognise that making the right impression really counts which is why we bring all of our expertise in staging highly efficient and memorable sporting days to the corporate golf sector. The benefits of Buchanan Castle Corporate Golf are best summed up by excellent facilities, great golf and superb organisation. Buchanan Castle creates a lasting impression to give clients golfing experiences to treasure. We’d all love to be Tiger Woods but while Buchanan Castle can’t promise you a swing like the great man, we can give the full hands-on tournament experience courtesy of a dedicated tournament director at every event. Buchanan Castle can also organise prizes and additional branding such as corporate scorecards, flags, tees, merchandise and banners — all helping to enhance the image of the event. But where Buchanan Castle Corporate Golf really differs from the rest of the field and the most attractive aspect of using Buchanan Castle is the ability to call on any of its PGA professionals to enhance the day. A golfing clinic or the prospect of a professional on course, giving those vital shot-saving tips, is a very attractive proposition helping to make it an even more memorable event and one that can impress clients. Finally, when the last ball has been sunk, Buchanan Castle can access a wide range of after dinner speakers to cap off a truly great day of golf. 9

Ladies Captain Report In mid June we played the knockout stages of the Ladies Championship. The final delayed due to bad weather was played on 29th June, with Annabel Struthers victorious over Sheena McDonald. It was a most exciting and sporting contest.
Our ladies section has a long tradition of friendliness. We have always welcomed new members and strive to encourage participation in our competitions. We try to keep a balance between the serious competitions and fun days. However it is difficult to find sufficient Tuesdays and Sundays to play all our events. We started the year rather apprehensive of the new CONGU rules but are now coming to terms with all the changes. I must thank all the ladies for their patience during this time. Our year started on a high note with our Spring Social Evening. Anna Telfer, Past Captain of Milngavie Golf Club was our guest speaker and she entertained us well with her light hearted interpretation of ‘being a woman in a man’s world.’ Every week has been busy with competitions and very few have been lost due to bad weather. Lady Captain’s day on 3rd June was played with a changed format. I felt that a Greensomes competition would help to accommodate our large number of players. This enabled us to have the prize giving at a sensible time and I have the impression that this change was well received. We were blessed with a surprisingly sunny day and a great team of gentlemen, who provided refreshments and kept spirits up at the halfway house.
Our Harper-Kennedy team are doing well, but it is too early to tell if our Match Secretary Ali Thompson will retire next year on a high note. Friendly matches with other Clubs are great fun and are well supported, but new faces are always welcome. The mixed competitions have been well supported this year. On the 7th June the sun shone brightly for our first Elder-Mclean without Nancy. However her family were all there to keep up the tradition of this fun day. Monday the 21st July was another great day with the Texas Scramble followed by the Hog Roast. The event was well supported with 19 teams competing. Finally, I can advise that I have received confirmation from the SLGA that as a result of the recent course changes the Standard Scratch Score for our course is 71.

Club Golf
Buchanan Castle Golf Club, which joined forces with the national junior golf programme, Clubgolf and Active Stirling in 2007 have recruited almost 130 local primary school children into their Clubgolf coaching programmes this season. In order to cater for the increased participation levels, the Club has taken impressive steps to improve its facilities, recruit and train coaches and volunteers and offer an affordable membership structure for anyone wishing to play regardless of age or ability. “Over the last season we have created a six hole Academy course, set up for juniors and we will develop another three, so ultimately we will have a nine hole par 3 course with holes from 60 to 240 yards,” said Keith Baxter, the Club’s Head Golf Professional. “We’ll have a driving range as well this summer and we already have planning permission for covered bays too.” Images © Stephen Brown www.omanbrownphotography.com

“It will be ideal for the kids and will give them a place they can come and develop their game without being intimidated on a big course. We hope this will create an environment where they can relax and enjoy it, remain playing golf and become full members.” By signing up for Clubgolf, Mr Baxter along with his team of Golf Professionals and PGA qualified Level 1 Volunteer Coaches, can offer young golfers, particularly primary school-aged children who have experienced the programme’s introductory game, FirstClubgolf, in school, a golf coaching programme which could take them right up to SGU and SLGA Area coaching and Academy coaching levels.
Said Katie Oman, Clubgolf ’s Central Scotland Regional Manager: “Not only is the model being created at Buchanan Castle GC very exciting for junior golf development and the local community, it is an example of good practice for other clubs to look at. Although not every golf club will be in a position to offer the same services that Buchanan Castle can, the principles of good club, coach and player development can be applied at any golf club”
15
Coaching
The Professional Coaching Staff at Buchanan Castle provide a vast array of packages to suit all needs. The Club has signed up to the National Coaching Programme for Scotland through Clubgolf. This provides children with a pathway from complete beginner to national team player. Not all will complete this journey, but it is hoped many will become lifelong golfers. Video Coaching is also an important part of Golf Development and at Buchanan Castle there are all the facilities available to assist in the improvement of your game. Various programmes covering all aspects of the game are on offer. Whether it is extending those drives holing more putts, details can be obtained by contacting the staff in the Pro Shop. The Course
Designed by James Braid, Buchanan Castle Golf Club is a beautiful 18 hole parkland course lying on the plain of the River Endrick less than one mile from Loch Lomond and it is a delight, in spite of the fact that in Scottish golfing terms it is almost a new-comer, dating from 1936. James Braid is an iconic figure in Scottish golf. He won five Open Championships in the space of just ten years and made a mark on the game that is still talked about to this very day. He is considered one of the greatest players to ever play the game. Its comes as little surprise, then, that his best body of work lies in the ‘Home of Golf ’. Old Tom Morris designed various golf courses, of course, but he did not have quite the same touch as Braid. He created over 250 courses in the United Kingdom in total. Playing a James Braid course such as Buchanan Castle is a sincere pleasure. And it is that kind of emotion that stirs the soul when you drive up the entrance to the world famous Gleneagles Hotel, where Braid’s best work resides. The King’s and Queen’s courses are perfect examples of the great man’s majestic touch, with the Queen’s laying claim to one of the best back nines in Scottish golf. Braid set the standard in golf course design — the rest had to follow. To fully understand why James Braid is considered one of the finest golf course designers of all time, you simply have to see his work for yourself. Come and play at the Buchanan Castle course! One intriguing aspect of play over the course is that many fairways have been framed by two tall trees, one either side, at around 200 yards, or where the Braid Dog-legs start to turn. These are simple but insidious. For example, the very first hole has these framing trees just where the fairway turns to the right. 32
The hole is 395 yards. If you drive well to the left to open up the second shot, you will find a diagonal of three bunkers squeezing out the left side of the green on the line of your approach and your approach is likely to need a healthy iron shot. The 9th hole at 387 yards is almost a replica, this time with the fairway sloping downwards into the right turn of the dog-leg. Holes 6, 7, 9 and 16 run by the River which is never in play, but it is always there, just over your shoulder. Braid’s original design called for a carry of a couple of hundred yards across the angle of the River Endrick. The greens in general are fairly flat and true. Like every other golf course built, no matter how short, how simple, Buchanan Castle will prevail over the golfer unless he brings to it a proper swing, hits the shot correctly, and gets the ball out about 200 yards from the tee and onto the fairway. Buchanan Castle Golf Course offers mountains, river and forest near the shores of Loch Lomond. It is a stunningly beautiful parkland course — a place you will remember with affection.
