Captain’s Welcome It is a great pleasure to welcome you to Cardross Golf Club and to have the opportunity to highlight this great course and the facilities we have to offer to both members and visitors. Cardross continues to be one of the foremost parkland courses in the West of Scotland and despite the severe winter conditions and a slow start to Spring I am sure that the condition of our course will be appreciated by all who play it this year. The work of our Course Manager, John Barr and his team has been of great benefit to members and guests alike and it has been a considerable achievement to have kept the course in such good condition this year. We have been delighted to see an increase in visitors to our course over the past year and offer a warm welcome to visitors from home and abroad. We have a range of packages which offer very competitive prices and our special rate of £100 for a four-ball is excellent value. Please take a look at our website for current pricing information. In addition to providing a first class golfing experience we complement this with our clubhouse services where you will receive a warm and friendly welcome from our bar and catering staff. We also have excellent function facilities and our reputation in this field is growing daily.
Our Professional’s Shop is often the first point of contact for visitors to the club therefore you can be assured of a friendly and helpful welcome from our Professional Robert Farrell and his staff who can also provide a range of equipment at very competitive prices. The quality of Robert’s teaching is recognised far beyond Cardross Golf Club, so if you need a lesson look no further! If you are interested in becoming a member of the club or just want to play a round, I am sure that the following pages will make Cardross Golf Club a hard place to resist. I look forward to seeing you over the coming year. Further details on membership are available from Iain Waugh, Secretary

The Club Cardross Golf Club was founded in 1895 and moved to its present location in 1904. The course was originally designed by Willie Fernie in 1904 and then re-designed by James Braid in 1921. Since then several national championships have been held at the club over the years notably in 1992 when Paul Lawrie won the Scottish Professional Championship there and later went on to win the Scottish Open at Carnoustie. Generous undulating fairways and large deciduous trees are features of the golf course and it tends to play much longer than the yardage suggests. The club has a welcoming clubhouse, excellent catering, a wellstocked Professional’s shop and is one of the best inland parkland golf courses in the West of Scotland. Being less than 6 miles by car from the world renowned Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park, with stunning views over the river Clyde and only 30 minutes from Glasgow Airport, makes Cardross not only easily accessible but a must on any golfing holiday. Visitors and Societies are most welcome to come and play our wonderful course.
David Hughes (Clubhouse Manager)
The Club has produced its fair share of champions over the years in golf. Notably Keith MacKintosh winner of the Scottish Amateur Championship in 1979 and Charlie Green winning it in 1970. Then more recently with Scott Henry winning the Scottish Boys Match Play and Stroke Play Championship in 2004 and then in 2006 winning the Scottish Amateur Championship in 2006. In ladies golf Jill Kinloch, a Cardross Ladies Golfer of note, who has done much to develop ladies golf in Scotland, succeeded in the Professional Circuit with Italian and French Open Championships notable successes. Other prominent ladies members include Suzanne Cadden who won the Junior Girls World Championships in the USA in 1973 and the Scottish Girls Championships in 1974,the British Ladies Stroke Play in 1975 and then the Scottish Girls Stroke Play and Match Play Championships in 1975. She was also a member of the Curtis Cup Team as a teenager. Full catering and bar facilities are available and the Club can be hired for special occasions.

Ladies Captain Report At Cardross golf club we have a friendly and enthusiastic ladies section. During the summer months our main competition day is Tuesday with the tee reserved for ladies medals in the morning and early evening. For ladies with work or family commitments there are regular “alternative day” and ordinary members competitions at the weekend. For lady beginners, or those wishing more informal golf, there is a group who play 9 holes on Wednesday mornings. To get you started lessons are available from the professional, either on your own or in a group.
We also have a social programme, with and without golf. The ladies Dinner is held in November, and there are usually at least two social evenings at the beginning of the year. There is an open day and a member/guest day. We also have an outing to another course in the summer, which is always an enjoyable day out.
Patricia Craig – Ladies Section Captain
Cardross is a beautiful parkland course with spectacular views. Even if golf is being a challenge the surroundings are a constant pleasure.
Patricia Craig Ladies section Captain
We have two ladies’ teams. The Allander team plays matches in the evening against local clubs in the area. These are handicap matches played in a friendly but competitive way. Anyone with a LGU handicap is welcome to volunteer for this team. It is an enjoyable way to play other courses and meet ladies from other clubs. The Greenlees Team plays during the day. This team is comprised of silver division players as the matches are played off scratch. We had a successful year last year and were promoted to the first division, a mixed blessing ! Again this is an opportunity to play other courses and meet other players.
7
Junior Golf The club has developed its junior section over the last few years, and recognises the importance that a strong and enthusiastic membership has on the long term sustainability of the club in general. To achieve this, the club has invested in its youth policy, which will see the club embrace the Scottish Government Initiative – Clubgolf. The aim behind the initiative is to bring golf to all Primary 5 children, giving them the chance to try golf. Although planning is still in its infancy, a number of volunteers have attended and passed the PGA Level 1 coaching course, as well as the obligatory Child Protection Courses. The next steps will be
8
to develop a strategy for the introduction of the Clubgolf initiative, which will see a structured coaching programme for the current junior membership and local Primary schools in conjunction with club professional Robert Farrell. Last year the junior team won the McIntyre league for the 2nd time in 3 years, without losing a game. As a result of their McIntyre success, the team then represented the McIntyre League in the Scottish Regional Final of the Home Nations Tournament at Westerwood, where they finished a very creditable 2nd to eventual winners – Craigielaw who went on to win the UK
final in Murcia. This speaks volumes for the team, who had to develop a number of new players due to the older juniors moving on to the gents section. This in itself showed the strength and depth the junior section has within its ranks. From an individual perspective, Liam Chambers took the junior championship after a hard fought and very close tie with Gavin Foubister. Cameron Farrell continues to go from strength to strength; his latest achievement will see him represent his country in the Nations cup at the English Golf Union’s McGregor trophy at Princes Club, Kent. Thanks to funding from Amy Batchelor’s estate, a winter league trophy was introduced. Played for in pairs, it kept the boys active throughout the winter months. The inaugural trophy was one by the pairing of Robert Wood and Euan Fleming.
The younger members are continuing to participate in the Monday night club, where they can meet and participate in games over 7 holes with other of the same ability. This also serves as a method of helping them understand the etiquette of golf from both member parents and older juniors who are encouraged to assist. The club continues to see an uptake in the number of girls in its membership; some of the younger ones are actively taking part in 9 hole competitions, and our oldest girl Aileen Campbell has been selected to represent Dunbartonshire County at the inter-counties match at Cawdor, and the County Team match at Hilton Park.
This year’s Junior Open will be played on the 28th July 2010, local company Excel Maintenance have kindly sponsored the event, with a number of other companies sponsoring each hole. Prizes will be available on every hole, giving all golfers the chance to go home with a prize. We are also running a 7 hole open competition for those new to golf. The course layout has been amended to suit the level of the boys and girls participating. This is being done in conjunction with Clubgolf and will hopefully encourage the other Clubs running the Clubgolf initiative to encourage their members to come along and take part. Prizes have been kindly donated by Babcock Marine for the event.

Practice Facilities The Practice Area at the Club gives the golfer good variations in play and the use of different shots/clubs. The area is very varied in both lie of ground, distance and angle of shot and all started by playing from four different practice driving plinths. There is the opportunity to play to three separate indicator flags using a maximum of a 6 Iron which lends itself to practice the golfer’s skill using the irons in a variation of distances and lies. Added to this, is the chance to get in some bunker play and therefore enhance the golfer’s skills from positions within a bunker.
The practice fairways are of a good distance and are well maintained. The Club is planning to improve the practice facilities with the inclusion of a practice chipping green, a short walking distance from the clubhouse, adjacent to the 2nd fairway. The Club’s practice area is available to all players and visitors where no booking is required.
25
The Course 1st Hole - Fernie’s First 398 yds Par 4 Position off this tee is all important, a shot left and you are blocked out for a shot to the green by the large mature oak trees. 2 large fairway bunkers (the spectacles) cross within driving distance leaving a mid iron shot to a sloping green. Avoid being above the pin to secure a par. 2nd - Auchenfroe 351 yds Par 4 Short par 4 - position all important, as most shots finish right of the fairway. Too short with the drive and your shot is hampered by a mature maple tree in the semi rough. A good drive is rewarded with a wedge shot to the green. 3rd - Bloomhill 256 yds Par 4 A drivable par 4 if your game is on form. Failure will land you in the deep greenside bunkers protecting the small two tier green. 4th - Carman 393 yds Par 4 A straight drive off this tee is a must, being aware of the burn crossing the fairway within driving distance. Accuracy into the green is required to avoid the out of bounds right and the steep slope left of the green. 5th - Burns Loup 131 yds Par 3 The first of the par 3s - played over a burn, accuracy and length all important as being short leaves you at the bottom of a steep slope, short of a wide but shallow green. 6th - Dinger 387 yds Par 4 Blind tee shot over the indicator post to avoid the 2 fairway bunkers right and avoiding being blocked for a shot to the green from the trees along the left.
26
7th - Clyde View 367 yds Par 4 A very picturesque par 4, played from an elevated tee. Approach shots to the green are very testing as deep bunkers flank all sides of this green. 8th - Killoeter 371 yds Par 4 The position of your tee shot is all important as most shots kick right. A well positioned drive will leave a mid iron to an elevated green, caution is required to avoid out of bounds through the green. 9th - Argyll 399 yds Par 4 An inviting tee shot to a fairway in the distance, avoid large bunker right and the mature trees along the left and you have a long iron shot to the largest green on the course, protected on the approach by deep bunkering both sides. 10th - Kilmahew 458 yds Par 4 Dogleg right, again position of your drive is all important to give you an open long iron shot into the green flanked by both sides with deep bunkering. Avoid overshooting the green as large bushes await the wayward shot. 11th - Avenue 432 yds Par 4 The newest section of the course, opened in 1967. A long par 4 requiring a good drive to avoid the mature oak tree in the middle of the fairway. A long iron shot required into a green surrounded with steep slopes on all sides. Miss this green and a par will be difficult to achieve. 12th - Cairniedrouth 163 yds Par 3 163 yrd par 3 - played into the smallest green on the course, surrounded on all sides by deep bunkering.
13th - Castle 502 yds Par 5 A par can be achieved if you play this hole sensibly and keep your shots on the fairway. Wayward shots will destroy your card, as there are mature trees and long natural grass flanking both sides of this hole. 14th - Kirkton 404 yds Par 4 A very intimidating tee shot faces you on this hole as you must drive over a copse of mature trees for a centre position on the fairway, leaving a long iron shot to an elevated green, surrounded with slopes. 15th - Tail o’ the Bank 196 yds Par 3 A long par 3 with trees and out of bounds to the right. The green is protected with deep bunkers front left and right of the green. 16th - Braid’s Bend 512 yds Par 5 Par 5 dogleg right. The bravest of golfers can take on the trees right and play over, giving a good chance of a birdie. Fail and you will be trying to save par, or at worst a definite bogey. 17th - Boquhomrie 265 yds Par 4 Short uphill par 4. Take the driver at your peril as both sides of the fairway and around the green are protected with 7 bunkers. There is out of bound 6 yrds right side of this small green. 18th - Douggie’s Mound 470 yds Par 4 The signature hole of the course, played from elevated tees with views over the river Clyde to the Renfrewshire hills. A straight drive is required to avoid the trees left and right of the landing area. The green is heavily protected by deep bunkering on all sides, so accuracy into this 2 tier green is a must to secure your par.
