Captain’s Welcome It is a great pleasure to welcome you to The Cardross Golf Club and to have the opportunity to highlight our great course and the facilities we have to offer to both members and visitors. Cardross continues to be one of the foremost parkland courses in the West of Scotland and I am sure that the condition of our course will be appreciated by all who play. Cardross has long been regarded as a true championship course and recent accolades from the Scottish Golf Union, after we hosted the Scottish Boys Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship in 2012 and from the Scottish Ladies Golf Association following the Scottish Ladies Junior Open Strokeplay Championship in 2011, shows that the condition of our course is up there with the best in the country. The work of our course manager John Barr and his team has been of great benefit to members and guests alike and it has been a considerable achievement to have kept the course in such good condition this year. Judging by the reports from visitors following their rounds the members have every reason to feel proud of our course. Both members and visitors are important to us and we offer a warm Scottish welcome to all who wish to test their skills against our challenging course. In addition to providing a first class golfing experience we compliment this with our Clubhouse services where you will receive a warm and friendly welcome from our bar and catering staff. We also have excellent function facilities and our reputation in this field continues to grow. Our Professional’s Shop is often the first point of contact for visitors to the Club. You can be assured of a friendly and helpful welcome from our Professional Robert Farrell and his staff who can provide a range of equipment at very competitive prices. The quality of Robert’s teaching is recognised far beyond Cardross Golf Club, so if you need a lesson look no further!
4
Our success is not limited to the course and surrounds alone but is evidenced by the record of our Junior Team who recently won the Junior McIntyre League 4 out of the last 5 years and in 2009 were runners up in the Scottish Boys Team Championship. Our men’s scratch team has enjoyed similar success over the years and recently won the McIntyre League for the second year running. If you are interested in becoming a member or just want to play a round or two I am sure that the following pages will make Cardross Golf Club a hard place to resist. Our first point of contact for all membership or playing packages is our Club Secretary.

The Club Cardross Golf Club was founded in 1895 and moved to its present location in 1904. The course was originally designed by Willie Fernie in 1904 and then re-designed by James Braid in 1921. Since then several national championships have been held at the Club over the years notably in 1992 when Paul Lawrie won the Scottish Professional Championship there and later went on to win the Scottish Open at Carnoustie. Generous undulating fairways and large deciduous trees are features of the golf course and it tends to play much longer than the yardage suggests. The Club has a welcoming Clubhouse, excellent catering, a well-stocked Professional’s shop and is one of the best parkland golf courses in the West of Scotland. Being less than 6 miles by car from the world renowned Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park, with stunning views over the river Clyde and only 30 minutes from Glasgow Airport, makes Cardross not only easily accessible but a must on any golfing holiday. The great thing about Cardross is that it can test a professional while still offering the high handicapper or occasional holiday golfer a thoroughly pleasant experience.
6
Notable members regularly enjoying a round include Jill Kinloch winner of both the Italian and French Opens, past Scottish Amateur Champions Scott Henry and Keith Mackintosh, and former Junior Girls World Champion Suzanne Cadden. Top amateur and past Walker Cup captain Charlie Green plays the course every week and always enjoys its challenge. But as someone contemplating joining our Club or visiting us on holiday, don’t worry, you don’t have to come anywhere near their dizzy heights to enjoy yourself. A high handicapper using their strokes carefully can give anyone a run for their money while enjoying one Scotland’s most scenic courses. Cardross offers so much to every level of player. That’s perhaps why so many golfing societies come back to us year after year for their outings. As a new member you’ll soon feel at home. Apart from competitions, there are informal groups who meet up at different times of the week who always welcome a new face. Afterwards, relax in the Clubhouse or on our many sunny days, on the terrace. From a snack to Sunday lunch the catering is excellent.
Once in a blue moon you hit a hole in one...

Ladies Section At Cardross Golf Club we have a friendly and enthusiastic ladies section. During the summer months our main competition day is Tuesday with the tee reserved for ladies medals in the morning and early evening. For ladies with work or family commitments there are regular competitions at the weekend. For lady beginners, or those wishing more informal golf, there is a group who play 9 holes on Wednesday mornings. To get you started lessons are available from the professional, either on your own or in a group. We have two ladies’ teams. The Allander team plays matches in the evening against local clubs in the area. These are handicap matches played in a friendly but competitive way. Anyone with a LGU handicap is welcome to volunteer for this team. It is an enjoyable way to play other courses and meet ladies from other clubs. The Greenlees Team plays during the day. This team is comprised of silver division players as the matches are played off scratch. Again this is an opportunity to play other courses and meet other players. We also have a social programme, with and without golf. The ladies Dinner is held in November, and there are usually at least two social evenings at the beginning of the year. There is an open day and a member/guest day. We also have an outing to another course in the summer, which is always an enjoyable day out. Cardross is a beautiful parkland course with spectacular views. Even if golf is being a challenge the surroundings are a constant pleasure.

Junior Golf
The Club recognises the importance that a strong and enthusiastic membership has on the long term sustainability of the Club. To achieve this, the Club has invested in its youth policy, which will see the Club embrace the Scottish Government Initiative – Clubgolf. Clubgolf offers a structure coaching programme for young golfers of all standards from age 9 upwards. All Clubgolf coaches are PGA qualified and have completed appropriate Child Protection and Disclosure. At Cardross Golf Club we offer Clubgolf at levels (1-3) with volunteer coaches and the Club Professional, and progression beyond to levels 4 and 5 with Dunbartonshire County and Scottish Golf Academy. The Club continues to see an uptake in girls membership and they are actively taking part in our 9 hole competitions. In addition to this we offer junior golfers: Junior Team Events Regular Competitions Junior Championships Summer and Winter Matchplay Competitions Junior Open

Practice Facilities
The Practice Area at the Club gives the golfer good variations in play and the use of different shots/clubs. The area is very varied in both lie of ground, distance and angle of shot and all started by playing from four different practice driving plinths.
The practice fairways are of a good distance and are well maintained. The Club is planning to improve the practice facilities with the inclusion of a practice chipping green, a short walking distance from the Clubhouse, adjacent to the 2nd fairway.
There is the opportunity to play to three separate indicator flags using a maximum of a 6 Iron which lends itself to practice the golfer’s skill using the irons in a variation of distances and lies. Added to this, is the chance to get in some bunker play and therefore enhance the golfer’s skills from positions within a bunker.
The Club’s practice area is available to all players and visitors where no booking is required.

The Course 1st Hole - Fernie’s First 398 yds Par 4 Position off this tee is all important, a shot left and you are blocked out for a shot to the green by the large mature oak trees. 2 large fairway bunkers (the spectacles) cross within driving distance leaving a mid iron shot to a sloping green. Avoid being above the pin to secure a par. 2nd - Auchenfroe 351 yds Par 4 Short par 4 - position all important, as most shots finish right of the fairway. Too short with the drive and your shot is hampered by a mature maple tree in the semi rough. A good drive is rewarded with a wedge shot to the green. 3rd - Bloomhill 256 yds Par 4 A drivable par 4 if your game is on form. Failure will land you in the deep greenside bunkers protecting the small two tier green. 4th - Carman 393 yds Par 4 A straight drive off this tee is a must, being aware of the burn crossing the fairway within driving distance. Accuracy into the green is required to avoid the out of bounds right and the steep slope left of the green.
11th - Avenue 432 yds Par 4 The newest section of the course, opened in 1967. A long par 4 requiring a good drive to avoid the mature oak tree in the middle of the fairway. A long iron shot required into a green surrounded with steep slopes on all sides. Miss this green and a par will be difficult to achieve. 12th - Cairniedrouth 163 yds Par 3 163 yrd par 3 - played into the smallest green on the course, surrounded on all sides by deep bunkering. 13th - Castle 502 yds Par 5 A par can be achieved if you play this hole sensibly and keep your shots on the fairway. Wayward shots will destroy your card, as there are mature trees and long natural grass flanking both sides of this hole.
5th - Burns Loup 131 yds Par 3 The first of the par 3s - played over a burn, accuracy and length all important as being short leaves you at the bottom of a steep slope, short of a wide but shallow green.
14th - Kirkton 404 yds Par 4 A very intimidating tee shot faces you on this hole as you must drive over a copse of mature trees for a centre position on the fairway, leaving a long iron shot to an elevated green, surrounded with slopes.
6th - Dinger 387 yds Par 4 Blind tee shot over the indicator post to avoid the 2 fairway bunkers right and avoiding being blocked for a shot to the green from the trees along the left.
15th - Tail o’ the Bank 196 yds Par 3 A long par 3 with trees and out of bounds to the right. The green is protected with deep bunkers front left and right of the green.
7th - Clyde View 367 yds Par 4 A very picturesque par 4, played from an elevated tee. Approach shots to the green are very testing as deep bunkers flank all sides of this green.
16th - Braid’s Bend 512 yds Par 5 Par 5 dogleg right. The bravest of golfers can take on the trees right and play over, giving a good chance of a birdie. Fail and you will be trying to save par, or at worst a definite bogey.
8th - Killoeter 371 yds Par 4 The position of your tee shot is all important as most shots kick right. A well positioned drive will leave a mid iron to an elevated green, caution is required to avoid out of bounds through the green.

10th - Kilmahew 458 yds Par 4 Dogleg right, again position of your drive is all important to give you an open long iron shot into the green flanked by both sides with deep bunkering. Avoid overshooting the green as large bushes await the wayward shot.
9th - Argyll 399 yds Par 4 An inviting tee shot to a fairway in the distance, avoid large bunker right and the mature trees along the left and you have a long iron shot to the largest green on the course, protected on the approach by deep bunkering both sides.
17th - Boquhomrie 265 yds Par 4 Short uphill par 4. Take the driver at your peril as both sides of the fairway and around the green are protected with 7 bunkers. There is out of bound 6 yrds right side of this small green. 18th - Douggie’s Mound 470 yds Par 4 The signature hole of the course, played from elevated tees with views over the river Clyde to the Renfrewshire hills. A straight drive is required to avoid the trees left and right of the landing area. The green is heavily protected by deep bunkering on all sides, so accuracy into this 2 tier green is a must to secure your par.
