Clyde Marina’s staff would like to extend a warm welcome to all our berth holders and visitors, old and new, to the 2016 boating season.
C
lyde Marina is ideally located on the stunning Ayrshire Coastline and is gateway to the beautiful waters of the Firth of Clyde and beyond. We offer a perfect base to explore the dazzling sea lochs and islands in one of the world’s most spectacular cruising grounds. With the shores and anchorages of the Isle of Arran, often called Scotland in miniature, the magnificent scenery of the Kyles of Bute, Loch Fyne, The Cumbraes & the Isle of Bute along with many other incredible destinations on our doorstep, you are spoilt for choice. Slightly further afield, many of our customers enjoy the more adventurous passage round the Mull of Kintyre to the islands of the inner and outer Hebrides and Scotland’s picturesque west coast or travel south west to Ireland. Clyde Marina is an excellent starting point with superb road, rail and air links. Or why not meander through the spectacular Crinan Canal with 14.5km of beautiful scenery, accessible for both yachts and power boats. Linking Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne through to Crinan, a lovely shortcut and straight out to the midst of the West Coast. Clyde Marina, situated in the Eglinton basin in Ardrossan Harbour, offers full service facilities. With the deepest
water marina berthing in the Clyde, we are also the most protected within our fully walled basin and with the provision of a storm gate which we can close for additional protection if required. Our hard standing is 7 acres of fully surfaced and serviced boatyard, suitable for laying up 300 vessels. Also boasting a large storage boat shed for winter undercover if required. We are very proud of our reputation for providing a professional service and great facilities at a reasonable price. Clyde Marina’s staff hope you enjoy your stay with us and the beautiful sailing waters, islands, sea lochs and abundant wildlife on our doorstep. The cruising zone off Clyde Marina has a host of cultural, heritage, world class food & drinks events and festivals, we have provided a sample of these later in the yearbook on page 25 and also on our website www.clydemarina.com. We look forward to seeing you and wish you a great sailing season for 2015.

Storm Gate Information
C
lyde Marina is exceptional in having the provision of a storm gate which is designed to give the maximum protection from wave action and heavy sea states from a westerly quadrant.
The gate is not tidal and so it is not a lock gate, but it closes the basin in storm conditions against heavy seas from the west.
TRAFFIC SIGNALS
When closed, even in the most extreme conditions the water surface inside the marina basin is virtually flat, significantly reducing the wear and tear on lines and fenders and giving extra protection for your boat. Generally the gate would be closed in gale force winds from the west that are consistently over 35 kts. If approaching in extreme weather please check with the marina on CH 80 or by phone or contact the Coastguard. The storm gate for you the boat owner means safer, more protected moorings, steadier pontoons and kinder waters for your boat and equipment. When closed, we notify the local coastguard and Ardrossan Harbour Control who change the entry lights to 2 Red over 1 Green and we post a “Storm Gate Closed notice in our office window. We will normally post entries on the Clyde Marina Facebook page to advise if the storm gate is closed. The Caledonian MacBrayne Arran ferry service shares the harbour and a traffic light system controls movements in the harbour for the short period when the ferry is manoeuvring. Yacht and boat owners are reminded to strictly observe the light sequence and instructions. Like Clyde Marina on Facebook to keep updated on Storm Gate & other news.
MARINA OPEN (Harbour Closed)
MARINA CLOSED (Harbour Open)
Pleasure vessels may proceed to and from the Marina. Commercial vessels requiring permission of Harbour Control are prohibited from entering, leaving or manoeuvring within the harbour. All Pleasure vessels must clear the Outer Basin, Canting Area and Approach Channel immediately. As a general rule if when approaching the harbour the light sequence is turned to 2 red / 1 green you may continue onwards if already past the red West Crinan buoy, passage through the harbour to the marina expeditiously. The harbour control tower broadcasts on VHF Ch 12 but the tower is generally only manned during the periods of ferry movements. If in doubt use Ch 12 to the tower during changes to light sequences.
HARBOUR AND Neither Commercial nor Pleasure vessels are permitted to proceed inwards or outwards. MARINA CLOSED

Lochranza, Arran
Isle of Arran Sitting on the shore of the beautiful Lamlash Bay, Lamlash is the largest village on the Isle of Arran, which is naturally protected to the east by Holy Island, rising 1,000ft (314m) out of the sea. A picturesque anchorage with good pubs, shoreline walks and much history and character. Lochranza is located on Arran’s north west corner the village is set on the shore of Loch Ranza. The bay, with good moorings, is dominated by its castle built into the bay on a shingle spit. Lochranza is a favourite spot for red deer, grey seals, otters and sightings of golden eagles. Or for a tasting take a trip to the Isle of Arran distillery and it`s single malts.
Isle of Bute One of the gems of the Clyde Estuary, the Isle of Bute has an extraordinary and varied landscape, secluded quiet

sandy bays with colonies of seals to craggy uplands, Bute is a haven for walking, cycling, fishing and wildlife with the most beautiful views and seascapes. When visiting Bute don`t miss out on a visit to Mount Stuart House, Britain’s most astounding and eccentric Victorian Gothic mansion, a feat of Victorian engineering. Or cruise around the island through the world renowned Kyles of Bute, the narrow sea passage between Bute and the Cowal peninsula. Wonderful scenery, good shelter and pretty villages with pubs and hotels with moorings. Passaging through the Kyles is a great way to or from Loch Fyne.
Loch Fyne The deep waters of Loch Fyne are one of Scotland’s longest sea lochs extending 40 miles (65km) into the Scottish hills. Renowned for its seafood the loch is alive with abundant sea birds and wildlife. Pretty anchorages

Gannets underwater.
Tarbert An idyllic Scottish fishing and yachting village surrounding Tarbert`s natural harbour and nestled into the hills of Kintyre. Famous for Loch Fyne’s seafood with a range of good pubs and restaurants. A yachting haven and a vibrant fishing community overlooked by its castle. Tarbert is good jumping off spot for the scenic cruise through the Crinan canal, the short cut to the west coast.
and the hills climbing out of the deep waters of the loch are the character for these beautiful cruising grounds. Stopover in the natural harbour of the fishing and yachting village of Tarbert, surrounded by heather covered hills. Tarbert is picturesque, historic and lively and a good centre for the cruising grounds of Loch Fyne or down into Kilbrannan Sound along Arrans western shores.
Wildlife The Firth of Clyde, the shores and waters of Arran and the Clyde’s sea lochs are full of life with regular sightings of dolphins, seals and in the summertime are feeding grounds for basking sharks. Overhead watch the diving display of gannets, one of the UKs largest and most beautiful seabirds. Clyde Marina is proud to be a member of Wild Scotland. 17

Scottish waters offer stunningly beautiful scenery, some of the best sailing in the world and a wealth of marine wildlife. Follow these top tips from The Green Blue to help safeguard these beautiful waters and habitats for future generations.
More tips and advice can be found on our website or in this How To Guide for Scotland, available from the address below or to download from the website
• Keep your distance from wildlife. Do not chase but let them come to you. Use binoculars for a better view. The Scottish Marine Wildlife Watching code - www.marinecode.org - tells you all you need to know. • Be careful where you land, especially in the breeding season, taking care not to disturb nesting birds or seal colonies. • Be careful not to spill oil and fuel and check your bilges before pumping out. One litre of oil or fuel can contaminate one million litres of water! • Raw sewage from boats can be a powerful pollutant. Use shore-side toilet facilities wherever possible and particularly if you are anchored in water with restricted tidal flow or near shellfish beds. • Use only environmentally friendly cleaners below and on deck. • In the more remote parts of Scotland waste bins can be hard to find so plan to hold on to your rubbish and dispose of it properly, recycling as much as possible. Make sure no loose waste gets blown overboard. • Minimise your use of fossil fuels, sail where possible and go with the tide. Use the free gym and row your tender rather than use the outboard! • Avoid excess noise and wash and take time to enjoy the tranquillity of this beautiful coastline. spread of invasive non native species in Scottish waters, as outlined in the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. In accordance with best practise outlined in this act we ask that all boats be lifted and washed off once a year and antifoul inspected if required, which of course is the best practise for your boat also, to avoid heavy fouling and transmission of marine growth. We can of course give you more detailed information on this issue if you wish.
We would also like to draw your attention to the Scottish Governments policy aimed at limiting the

History
T
he town and harbour of Ardrossan have a long history inextricably linked with the sea.
The growth of the railways in the mid 1800s played a major part in Ardrossan’s development. From 1841 to 1848 Ardrossan was an important link in the fastest route from London to Glasgow, by train to Fleetwood and then packet boat to Ardrossan. As the railways expanded after 1848 the entire journey could be taken by rail. Ardrossan town and harbour were serviced by 5 railway stations, 3 of them still remain. As Ardrossan developed during the 18th & 19th centuries it became best known as a port; with coal and iron exported to
Europe & North America as well as Ireland for many years. Shipyards were built and many local firms were involved in building wooden ships, fishing vessels or cargo boats. This continued through the post war period until the competition from abroad damaged Ardrossan’s shipbuilding industry and it ceased to exist much after the 1950s and 1960s. Ardrossan town had grown as a result of the harbour and in 1886 the Ardrossan Harbour Company was formed to deal with the huge increase in use of the harbour. The company built the Eglinton dock, where we are today, in 1892 along with the existing outer breakwater.
The Ardrossan Harbour Company eventually became a part of Clydeport holdings. Ardrossan continued to flourish into the 20th century with new manufacturing industries, but the harbour declined in latter half of the century. In the 1980s – 90s when apart from the Arran ferry service the harbour had become little used. In 1997 the establishment of Clyde Marina started the transformation of the Eglinton basin from an out of work commercial dock into the now vibrant marina and boatyard and beginning a new chapter in Ardrossan’s maritime story.
