eptember 1997, the Ashoka name burst onto the scene in Bearsden, sending ripples of delight through the community. Designer dhansac was on their doorstep! These days, the newly revamped contemporary interior is oh so stylish, and the Harlequin Suite to the rear of the restaurant makes a superb setting for that special occasion.
This hot and spicy haven provides a welcome retreat every evening for the local curry lover. Sundays, it’s a family affair, (as in all Harlequin Restaurants), and the home delivery and take-away service has proved a must for busy families at any time of the week! The restaurant also offers a superb outside catering facility, ideal for family celebrations or corporate events in the local community.

Captain’s Foreword
Welcome to Douglas Park Golf Club’s Year Book for 2009. On behalf of the Committee, Office Bearers and everyone connected with the Club, I am pleased to present this Foreward to our first ever Year Book, one of our new marketing initiatives. We are proud of our mature parkland, 18 hole par 69 golf course nestling in the leafy suburb of Bearsden, close to Glasgow’s West End. The Club celebrated its centenary year in 1997, so golf has been played here for some time. After a recent visit to conduct an ecological and landscape assessment as part of our ongoing course development programme, the assessor commented “Several holes, including the 4th, 16th, 17th and 18th are very attractive golf holes and certainly stand out as such within what is a very urban setting”. Complementing the course, our fine thirties style, two-storey Clubhouse features an impressive main lounge at first floor level overlooking the 1st and 18th holes. A full bar and catering service is available. But in these changing times this is no reason to rest on our laurels. Whatever category of membership, it is our aim that each and every time the Course is played and/or the Clubhouse is visited, members and their guests leave with the feeling that the experience has been enjoyable and worthwhile. Our Gents, Ladies Junior and Clubhouse sections are all very active, participating in a full and varied programme of golf competitions and events, arranged principally over the summer months and continuing throughout the year. There is also a lively social programme of events to suit different interests, enjoyed in a relaxed, family friendly atmosphere in and around the Clubhouse. If you have any queries about the Club, playing the Course, using the Clubhouse, or simply would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact our Managing Secretary, or speak to a member of the Committee. I hope you enjoy browsing through selected views of the Course and Clubhouse facilities and find something of interest within the contents. Yours in golf

Club History
On the 22nd June 1897, Mr Will Gibson of Camphill, Bearsden wrote to a number of friends and neighbours inviting them ‘to attend a meeting of gentlemen favourable to the formation of a golf course on the ground at Douglas Park’ Although only 11 people attended they resolved that evening to do just that. Within 14 weeks they had elected a committee, obtained the lease of the ground, had the land drained and a nine hole course constructed. The number of members had increased to 56.
William Lyon Captain 1897
The course was formally opened on Saturday 2nd October, 1897, in somewhat dreary weather. By late 1897 the membership had increased to 107 and by 1901 to over 200. Changes in layout were made in 1903, 1907, 1933 and 1972, this being the present layout. The first clubhouse, of iron, was constructed in 1897 and was replaced by a larger clubhouse in 1903 which, with a face lift in 1911, served the members well until the present club house was opened in 1938. The members of Douglas Park take pride in the number and success of the golf and social occasions which have grown since the early days. One of the most revered and most enjoyable has been the Gow-Glen Sheild presented by vice captain Ninian Glen of Douglas Park and past Captain Barney Gow of Bearsden Golf Club for ‘friendly games between the clubs’. Many are the stories about these encounters, some of them averring that only member of the visiting party to arrive home sober was the horse used to draw the hiredbrake. These stories could well be true! This magnificent trophy is still played for annually and remains a highlight of each season. In recent years the course has been constantly upgraded by better greenkeeping techniques, improved machinery, installation of water to the greens and tees and the planting of many trees of different varieties. The Clubhouse is a substantial, thirties style, two storey building with locker and changing accommodation at ground floor level and lounges, bar and catering on the first floor. The main lounge is particularly impressive; a long rectangular room capable of sub-division for different functions, with large windows uniquely offering excellent views down onto the 1st and 18th holes. Full bar and catering service is available throughout the summer playing season, with more limited opening hours during winter months.
6
A new access road from the Boclair gate to a central point at the greenkeeper’s main shed at the 3rd hole has been constructed with an extension through the wood to the left of the fourth fairway and the upgrading and renewal of all paths has been carried out, plus the replacement of the area of scrub at the eleventh hole by a landscaped copse of specimen trees, the construction of a new stone bridge at the eleventh hole and the planting of a further 5000 deciduous trees. Further developments have taken place with the reconstruction of 15 greens and extensive drainage improvements to the course with the next phase of course improvements to include finishing the final three greens, implementation of our eco course management plan and more drainage installation. The Antonine Wall, which runs through the golf course, is now considered to be an archaeological monument of international importance, being one of the most substantial and best preserved frontier systems in the area of the whole of the former Roman Empire and has now been granted World Heritage status.
The “wall” consisted of a solid wall of turf, probably topped with a timber breastwork. The turf wall was built on top of a solid stone foundation. A good example of the foundation can be seen in the New Kilpatrick Cemetery within a few metres of the 15th tee. The wall, when completed, would have been at least 3 metres high and the breastwork would make it even harder to surmount. To the south of the wall ran a Roman road, some 6 metres wide, of rough cobbles topped by gravel. This military way was used by the Roman Army to build the wall and provided a lateral communications link for the garrisons of the forts that were placed at intervals of about 3 kilometres along the length of the wall. The construction of the Wall about AD 142 was carried out by Roman troops of the Second, Sixth and Twentieth legions, supported by armed auxiliaries and probably by native Britons as forced labour all under the command of Lollius Urbicus, the Governor of Britain.

Ladies’ Captain
Douglas Park has a very active Ladies’ section of approximately 200 members who organise a varied programme of golf and social events at which every member is most welcome. The club is ideally situated in Bearsden making access easy for either a full round, a few holes or simply for lunch. Our clubhouse lounge is bright and light with a beautiful view and deer and foxes can often be seen on the first fairway. Ladies are full members and play a full and active part in the running of the club. Our golfing programme consists of a balanced mixture of strokeplay, matchplay and fun competitions. Amongst the latter are the ‘Spring Chicken’, Texas Scramble, Greensomes and Shotgun foursomes. Throughout the year there are several mixed competitions. Members invite guests to an annual Invitation Foursomes which is well supported. Lady Captain’s Day is always very popular and we had an entry field of 80 this year. Rose wine and strawberries in the gazebo at the 11th tee added a festive note without detriment to the standard of play! The ladies’ social evening in February begins our year. This is a dinner followed by some entertainment in the form of a speaker or musical event. This year we were addressed by the director of a well known auction house who followed his talk by an Antiques Road Show which was great fun and most interesting. March is the time for our bridge drive with afternoon tea and home baking. A winter foursomes competition runs from October to March and in addition a weekly informal sweepstake is held on Fridays for all who care to turn up. Summer competitions get underway in April and the weeks rush by as we fit in all our events. We have seven teams, some more serious than others, so the chance of mixing in and meeting other members is excellent. The club championship is held in the second half of June and we have an Open Day, a Greensomes, at the end of that month. Ladies are also welcomed as participants in the annual Pro-Am event in late June. A club coffee morning on the first Saturday in November is organised mainly by the Ladies Section and raises money for a designated charity chosen by the lady captain. The final ladies’ social event is a Christmas lunch held in mid-December. Every effort is made to welcome new members to Douglas Park Ladies’ Section and to ensure that they feel included in all golfing and social activities.
Gillian Beattie Ladies’ Captain 9
Junior Golf
At Douglas Park Golf Club we believe strongly in the development of our junior members. As a result the committee formed a junior development group in line with the Scottish Golf Union Junior Charter. The JDGG is available for existing and new members and also for relevant juniors on the club waiting list.
The JDGG offers the following opportunities: Basic teaching by the professional and senior members covering safety, rules and technique (All new members 10 to 12 years). Structured coaching for all junior members. Mini medals over 9 holes for 10 to 12 age groups. Friendly team competitions with other local clubs for non J.J. McCarry team players. The JDGG team works in conjunction with interested senior members to ensure the delivery of a safe environment and to ensure all junior members achieve their golfing aims and full potential.

PGA Professional
Douglas Park Golf Club are pleased to welcome Robert Irvine as the new Club Professional. Robert’s golfing career began at Kinross Golf Club where he became the youngest club champion in their history and the only junior to hold the title of Club Champion in both the gents and juniors section. With a BSc in Applied Sports Science from Edinburgh University in 2003, Robert developed a keen interest in sports psychology, modes of learning and biomechanics. He joined Kilmacolm Golf Club in May 2003 and used the information gleaned from his studies to secure his full PGA qualification. Throughout the PGA Foundation Degree Robert was awarded Scottish Trainee of the year and finished 2nd in the National Assistant of the year awards in consecutive years. At Kilmacolm Robert developed an holistic teaching approach which has allowed him to develop an entirely personalised level of coaching. Hugely passionate about coaching, Robert hopes to help members develop their games and fulfil their golfing potential. Planning to introduce many innovative and interesting opportunities to Douglas Park members, their guests and visitors to the club, Robert hopes to enhance the already prestigious reputation of the club and make it a club which members are proud of and one which others aspire to become members of. Robert looks forward to meeting you all over the coming weeks and months and wishes you all a happy and successful golfing season ahead.

A new catering team is now in place with Lisa Cuthbert and Pauline Little having responsibility for the catering and bar services. The club prides itself on providing high levels of customer service along with excellent catering and has a good reputation within the golf industry. A new menu was introduced in January with the main focus being on fresh produce, variety, quality and value for money with all members being entitled to a 10% discount if they use their loyalty card. The clubhouse is a substantial thirties style, two storey building with a lounge, snug bar and dining room situated on the second floor. The main lounge is particularly impressive and is along rectangular shape capable of sub division for different functions with large windows offering excellent views down onto the first and eighteenth holes. The clubhouse is available for member functions and parties and the dress code is smart casual with the emphasis on providing a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in and around the facility. Setanta TV is also available in the bar and covers many major sporting events, which are frequently accompanied with special promotions. There are a number of popular regular social events throughout the year and these include a Burns Supper, Ladies social evening, Stag dinner, Kidz Xmas party, Hogmanay party, Jazz night, themed dinner evenings and many others. Out & About
Bearsden is a town in East Dunbartonshire. It lies on the north- western fringe of Greater Glasgow, and is effectively a suburb of Glasgow. It is approximately 6 miles from the city centre, on the site of the Roman Antonine Wall. So if you can find some time away from the excellent golf course at Douglas Park there are a number of local attractions to visit and experience. Bearsden’s Roman Baths gives a remarkable example of the survival of ancient archaeological remains dating back to AD 142. Mugdock Country Park is one of the most popular visitor attractions in the area and caters for visitors with interests in building heritage, general leisure pursuits and flora and fauna. Taste a bit of Scottish culture by attending the Bearsden and Milngavie Highland Games held every year in June. This is a great day out for the family, tourists, sports people, shoppers and fun-seekers. Glasgow’s Museum of Transport situated opposite the Kelvingrove Gallery is one of Britain’s most popular transport museums and attracts around half a million visitors each year, admission is free. If a gentle stroll is more to your liking the Trossachs area which includes Aberfoyle, Loch Katrine and Callander provides an abundance of choice to suit all tastes. Take to the water and sail on the world’s last remaining sea-going paddle steamer the Waverley, or enjoy the wonderful scenery of Loch Lomond from on board one of the many sailings from Balloch. Start the West Highland Way experience locally in Milngavie and enjoy the wonderful outdoor experience by walking to Fort William and sampling a bit of Scottish hospitality on the way! Steam up the West Highland Line by train from Dumbarton Central and enjoy the wonderful scenery on route to Oban, Fort William and Mallaig.

Practice Facilities
Before play, it’s worthwhile warming up with a few swings in the two practice nets, which are located at the end of the car park, just off the rear access to the Clubhouse. Then walk round to the practice putting area, which is in front of the Clubhouse. (Look out here for players teeing off at the 1st tee and putting on the last green). If you wish to hone your short game, there is a small practice area with two greens, located at the triangle of ground between the 15th and 16th fairways.

1st and 2nd are par 4 holes, with fairways close to the railway line. Wait until the train has passed before playing your shot. Do not cross the fence or enter railway land to retrieve a ball. The 3rd is a short par 3, surrounded by tall Scots Pines. From here the Course widens out to the 4th, a tricky dog leg right par 4, played to a large two tier green at the corner between the farmer’s rolling fields. 5th is a long par 3, downhill towards the River Allander with fine views over to Milngavie and the Campsie Hills.
The green to the par 4 6th hole is positioned at one of the far corners of the course before turning to the 7th hole, an attractive par 4, slight dog leg right, with the fairway running parallel to the River Allander. Use the Ladies’ Bridge to cross the burn. On the opposite bank of the river is the Rangers Football Club training ground. Holes 8 and 9 are two long par 4’s, played between several stands of mature evergreen trees. The 10th is the first of two par 5 holes on the Course, the fairway runs parallel to the railway and the Allander Sports Centre, heading back towards the Clubhouse. From the 10th green walk up to the Gazebo and elevated teeing area for the par 4 11th hole, overlooking the Centenary Bridge and Manse Burn (out of bounds!)

Leaving the 11th green, a walk through the trees is preparation for the shortest hole on the course, the par 3 12th, played up a steep hill. The 13th is the second par 5, a rolling fairway shared with the 16th, and leading up to the green, which is built on the Antonine Wall. 14th is a straight forward par 4, set along the contours of the hill and parallel to Boclair Road, which is hidden by the line of tall evergreen trees. Hole15 is a long par 3, played uphill to a green at the highest part of the Course and again is sited on the Antonine Wall. On a clear day, look north to see Ben Lomond and south to Tinto Hill. The par 4 16th is the first of the closing holes heading back to the Clubhouse, played downhill past the high stone boundary wall of the cemetery. 17th is a par 3, hitting to an island green with a mature beech wood as the backdrop, trees left and right of the green.
Practice Area
‘Home’ is an elevated tee with the Clubhouse as an imposing focal point just beyond the 18th green.
