A
s the new President my first task is to thank Trevor Knowles for his hard work and dedication to Chamber over the past two years. As you will see from the Annual review in this magazine, we have had another great year with a number of successes on the road to building the Chamber. Fortunately Trevor stays on the Committee as immediate past President and I know that I will welcome his advice during my term of office. We also welcome two new Board members, Karen Ward Boyd of The Holywood Trust and Alec MacDonald of Purple ICT. Their details and those of all the Board members are in this magazine. For those of you who do not know me, I have worked in the long established family owned business of Metrik Office Supplies for over 20 years. I am the third generation to work in the Company which my Grandfather established originally as Dinwiddies Farm Records in 1958. The Chamber has an ambitious programme for the next two years and I am looking forward to playing my part in this and meeting as many members as I can. These are challenging times for us all as belts are tightened and new business seems harder to find every year. I was struck by the very positive note that Justin Urquhart Stewart sounded at the annual lunch, encouraging us to look to the longer term and avoid making short term snap decisions that we will live to regret. While times are hard there are many businesses here that have weathered the recession and still managed to grow.
This year will see the very first Dumfries and Galloway Business Awards organised by Chamber and we have been delighted by the response from businesses and from the sponsors. The Awards ceremony in March should be a great event and a great chance to showcase your business to the community. We will be working closely with the Council in relation to Dumfries Town Centre as we are aware of a number of proposals and investments in the wings that could help the regeneration work. However not all investment is good investment and we need to be sure that we get the right projects in the right place so that we grow the town centre to bring it back to the vibrant place I remember as a boy growing up here. The Chamber needs to serve all its members and we are always looking for ways to improve what we do, so please get in touch if you have any bright ideas. news IT Centre Celebrates 15 Years! 2012 marks the 15th year of business for local training provider and Chamber member Castle Douglas IT Centre. Initially setup in late 1996, the doors to the training room were opened for the first time on 14th January 1997 and by the end of that month over 100 people had signed up for courses.
Over the years the IT Centre has helped young and old, employed and unemployed, complete beginners and everyday computer users to learn something new and improve their IT skills. This has included working with local initiatives and businesses to enhance the workforce of Dumfries and Galloway. Local farms provide practical opportunities for Rural Skills

inclair Barbour, Queensberry Initiative Strategic Group founder member, has been instrumental in involving several local farmers in Wallace Hall Academy’s Rural Skills courses. Sinclair has been organising a rota of willing volunteers who are expanding the opportunities for pupils to be involved in hands-on agricultural tasks. The sessions, arranged during the Friday practical periods of these courses, dovetail well with the practical lessons offered for these groups on the Queensberry Estate. Leanne Peoples, Project Officer for the Initiative, commented: “We are delighted that local farmers are opening their doors to us this winter. Achievements over the years include campaigning to bring broadband to the Stewartry in 2003, something Centre Manager Chris Fyles believes was as important then as the requirement for next generation broadband is now. Chris told the Chamber “It’s hard to believe that when the IT Centre first opened, our two ISDN lines made the internet seem fast! Now, many people and businesses in our region are lucky if they can achieve speeds of 2MB and have very limited access to mobile broadband. It’s interesting to read that the next generation of mobile broadband (4G) uses the same carrier signal as analogue television, something that has been switched off in our region for a while now”.

urray Farmcare, one of the UK’s leading veterinary pharmacies, recently launched an ecommerce web site www.murrayfarmcare.co.uk to sell veterinary medicines and related products to the pet, equine and farm markets. MD Andrew Cairns explained “Selling medicines on the internet presents unique challenges. We are required by the regulators to supervise sales with the same level of security that would be exercised over the counter when selling by traditional means. We have two pharmacists and seven SQP’s (Suitably Qualified Persons) to help ensure that things are done properly. We are grateful to Scottish Enterprise for their assistance” Murray Farmcare recently won the Franchisee of the year award from Downland marketing for their work and for having the biggest increase in all the franchises. September of 2011 also saw the extension of Murray Farmcare’s expertise in the supply of farm dairy hygiene products to the supply of hygiene products and services to cafes, restaurants, hotels, pubs, care homes and factories. Hygiene Sales Manager, Tracy Kirkpatrick, heads up the new division and said “I am hoping that my previous experience in this industry will be a significant help to the company’s growth plans.” She added “I believe the Dumfries and Galloway business community wants a reliable and competitive local supplier with a rapid delivery service and that’s what we offer.” Murray Farmcare can be contacted on 01387 722300.

outh of Scotland Business Solutions has provided social media surgeries to over 60 small businesses during November/December 2011.
The Social Media for the South of Scotland initiative delivered surgeries in Dumfries, New Galloway and Melrose with experts from the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) providing oneto-one support and advice to owners/ managers on any aspects of using social media to promote and enhance their business. Sharon Glendinning, Project Manager for South of Scotland Business Solutions said: “The response we have received from local businesses to the social media initiative has been excellent. From listening to local businesses and working in partnership with other agencies, we were able to identify that there was an increased awareness of social media but businesses were seeking the extra knowledge and skills to apply this new way of communicating to their individual business needs. UWS responded by developing and delivering an innovative customised solution which has received really positive feedback from local businesses.” South of Scotland Business Solutions is a partnership project funded by the Scottish Funding Council and European Regional Development Fund, which aims to encourage local companies to access the technical expertise, knowledge and research skills available within the colleges and universities in their area, to help their business develop and remain competitive. Chapelcross Defueling Project Passes Halfway Stage
M
agnox Limited, Chapelcross hit another significant decommissioning milestone in November when the site passed the halfway stage in defueling. Following formal permission to start defueling from the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) in July 2008, and the first flask being sent to Sellafield for reprocessing in April 2009, there has been safe, consistent progress made with the defueling programme at the Chapelcross Site. A total of 38,075 fuel elements are being systematically removed from all four reactors and safely dispatched for reprocessing to Sellafield. Over 19,052 fuel elements have now been removed from the site in 128 flasks, each containing about 150 fuel elements. The total flask shipments required to complete defueling at Chapelcross is approximately 250, and the defueling project is on course for completion by March 2013. Completion of the defueling programme will result in 99% of the higher activity inventory being removed from the site. Tim Dunham, Chapelcross Plant Manager in charge of the defueling project said “Reaching the half way stage is a significant milestone and great achievement for Chapelcross. We continue to make significant progress on the major task of defueling the site and it is a testament to the skilled and dedicated workforce currently focused on the defueling project”.

n November 26th, T B Watson Ltd. of English Street, Dumfries, the name behind the brand ‘The Drambusters’ held their inaugural Whisky Festival at the Cairndale Hotel. The event was supported by 24 whisky suppliers who provided tasters of their products to over 350 attendees. Over 170 different whiskies and spirits were on offer and enticed people from far and wide to come to Dumfries for the event. Groups arrived from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, London and even Bavaria with the furthest flung attendee from Turkey who made the trip especially for the Festival. The company intends to repeat the event in November 2012. Everybody agreed that it was a great day out. They had the opportunity to speak to the people who make the whiskies and to hear the history behind the brands. Two ‘master classes’ were also held, by Springbank Distillery & Glen Garioch distillery and those that attended the Springbank master class were the first in the world to taste their soon to be launched Springbank 21yo. abc recruitment services has been working in partnership with the Newcastle Building Society to help them place two Branch Managers, one in Dumfries and the other in Penrith. The Newcastle had previously worked since May 2011 with another recruitment agency but had been unable to find suitable candidates. abc recruitment were approached by the Newcastle to help them solve these recruitment problems. Shortly afterwards, interviews were held for both branches and two successful candidates were appointed in December 2011. Collaboration the Order of the Day

estination Dumfries & Galloway (DD&G) recently partnered with VisitScotland and Dumfries & Galloway Council to host the Dumfries & Galloway tourism conference on the theme of ‘Collaboration not Competition’, held in Dumfries on the 21st November. The conference, with over 150 delegates attending, featured a series of interactive workshops sessions providing information and advice, as well as practical skills and the opportunity for some lively discussion. Councillor Roger Grant and Wilma Finlay, (Chair of DD&G) delivered welcoming speeches, with key note speeches from Malcolm Roughead, OBE (Chief Executive of VisitScotland) and Alasdair Houston, MBE (Chairman of the Gretna Green Group). Cathy Agnew, (Chair of GCAT), chaired a Q&A session with representatives from DD&G (Wilma Finlay), VisitScotland (Malcolm Roughead) and Dumfries & Galloway Council (Chris Brown, Business and Enterprise Manager). Questions raised included the impact of wind farms on tourism, partnership working and the VisitScotland booking system.

Advisory Fuel Rates for Company Cars

any employers and employees make use of the advisory fuel rates published by HM Revenue & Customs and Brian Johnstone, Partner with Armstrong Watson advises that these have recently changed. The rates apply where the employer: reimburses employees for business travel in company cars where the employer does not provide fuel, or, requires employees to reimburse the cost of employer provided fuel used for private travel, so potentially avoiding a private fuel benefit charge. The advisory fuel rates are also acceptable for VAT purposes provided VAT receipts for fuel purchases are retained. The rates have changed with effect from 1 September 2011. The new rates are on the link below. Please note that HMRC no longer gives a month’s notice in this regard. Currently HM Revenue & Customs reviews the rates at least twice a year. This year Dumfries & Galloway Life Magazine beat off stiff competition from Living Orkney (Orkney Media Group); No.1 (PSP Publishing); Scottish Field (Wyvex Media); The List (The List) and The Official Jacqueline Wilson Mag (DC Thomson) to win the coveted Consumer Magazine of the Year award for 2011.

The Dumfries & Galloway Life team was up for five awards in total, with Commissioning Editor Andrea Thompson shortlisted for Editor of the Year; staff writer Anne Armstrong for Feature Writer of the Year; sales manager Gaynor Ross and account manager Sarah Duffy for Sales Performance; and the magazine’s People of the Year Awards for Brand Extension. There were huge cheers when Dumfries & Galloway Life was named Consumer Magazine of the Year. Judges said it was “clearly loved by its readers and the community it serves.” Dumfries & Galloway Life, which celebrates its 50th issue, was launched in September 2006 as the bimonthly DGB Life. It was re-named and rebranded as the monthly Dumfries & Galloway Life in April 2009 – going on to be named Scottish Magazine of the Year just eight months later. It is published by CN Magazines, part of the CN Group. CN Magazines Publishing Director, Richard Eccles, has praised the Dumfries & Galloway Life team for their dedication and enthusiasm. “To win the title of Consumer magazine of the Year for a second time in three years is fantastic, especially given the standard of the magazines that we were up against.”

Young’s Seafood wins Food Manufacturing Award
The award was presented to Young’s Seafood Limited for the business’ Manufacturing Excellence (Manex) initiative, which has been showcased at their processing site in Annan. The site has undergone considerable redevelopment in recent years, and now produces 1,000 tonnes of scampi each year. Steve Lidgett, Operations Director at Young’s Seafood Limited, who received the award on behalf of the business, said: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious award, and it’s great that the business has been recognised as Seafood Manufacturer of the Year. I would like to thank the team in Annan for their incredible determination in driving the business’ Manex journey, which is helping to deliver growth and increase on-site efficiencies. Their passion and commitment is a credit to Young’s, and we will build on this achievement with continued improvement going forward.

t was a day of great celebration, standing ovations, and just a few tears – the second Dumfries & Galloway Life People of the Year Awards ceremony was once again an unforgettable experience.

The Duncan Rooms overflowed with pride as the awards finalists gathered to find out who would be crowned the 2011 winners from the worlds of enterprise, arts and leisure, sports, culture, tourism, food and drink, as well as honouring those who play an important part in their community.

The Tourism Champion category recognises success in a business that puts Dumfries and Galloway on the map, along with promoting the region’s tourism sector.
The 180 guests enjoyed a wonderful meal and a superb dancing performance from the Dumfries & Galloway Life Special Award winner, 13-year-old Ellis Hayes.

A number of Chamber members featured in the awards. Chamber Board member Jacquie Brown was named as the Businessperson of the Year hot on the heels of being named the Beauty Salon of the Year at the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards 2011.

A year of steady progress was the conclusion of the Chamber members at the AGM in November last year.
Gordon Mann provided his overview of the year to the end of September indicating that the Chamber had continued to grow despite the difficult financial situation. Membership was up and the churn rate had been halved. The Chamber had run more events than ever and attendance at these was at an all time high. During the year a number of events had proved to be very popular including the joint networking events with Cumbria Chamber, employment law updates and the inaugural ladies networking event. With 65 people attending the Ladies Networking Event to hear Jenny Lambie and take part in both formal and informal networking, this event looks like becoming a regular fixture in the Chamber calendar. The annual Lunch continues to grow in popularity and in 2010 Gavin Hastings proved to be a great draw with a record 230 attending only to be surpassed by Justin Urquhart Stewart drawing in over 250 in 2011 (technically that is in the new Chamber year!). The Mountain Bike Business Network continued throughout the year and completed the second phase of the project to connect businesses with mountain bikers. This project was jointly funded by the network members, Scottish Enterprise, Forestry Commission Scotland and Leader and has created a new web site www.eat-sleep-ride.com creating a single site that connects any local business with bikers. An A5 booklet was produced showing all the businesses as well as some information on the region and distributed throughout the north of England and the central belt of Scotland. With 45,000 copies distributed, the leaflet will help raise the profile of the region. The project has now moved on to a new phase as part of the VisitScotland Year of Active and is working to widen the appeal of the region to anyone looking to enjoy the outdoors and the many different activities now on offer. The
web site is now joined by an iPhone App – just search in the App Store for ‘Activity Holidays’ and it pops up. Reaction so far to the app has been very positive and the task is now to promote it more widely. The android version will also be produced early in 2012. The Chamber’s other main project is the redevelopment of the former Happit shop on the High Street. The building had been acquired by the Chamber and refurbished to allow all three floors to be used for small businesses. Rather than advertise the spaces in the building for rent the Chamber has agreed to hold off while a new artists group works up a new business plan to create an exciting new arts hub under the title of ‘The Stove’ in the Town Centre. The group now has an outline plan that has been accepted by both the Chamber and the Council and they are now actively seeking grant aid. The new business plan will require some further work to the building and this will also allow the introduction of a lift to improve access fro the disabled. This was not a requirement of building regulations and the initial grant from the Scottish Government was not sufficient to cover this cost. Additional capital will therefore be required to allow this to progress so that the building is unlikely to be ready before the end of the year. Campaigning and lobbying plays an important part in the work of the Chamber and during the year Chamber continued to support the national campaign on business rates – the lack of transition funding and the impact of revaluation; public procurement and the need to recognise the importance of making the process accessible to small local businesses; and transport issues in Dumfries. The Chamber also made a series of comments in relation to the proposed Local Development Plan and the need to ensure that the plan is business friendly. The Chamber’s Treasurer, Roderick Williamson reported on the finances indicating that turnover was down from last year and although the expenditure was also down the Chamber had made a small loss for the year. The income reduced due mainly to the MBBN work on the initial project ending and a gap before the new Active Tourism project started. The Chamber accounts will be available on the members’ section of the web site.

residing over his last AGM of his two year stint in office, President Trevor Knowles talked about the memorable moments of this year recalling that he had attended a Royal Reception at Windsor Castle for rural businesses and also watched the army train at West Freugh with the most realistic casualties. He had thoroughly enjoyed his term of office and thanked the staff and Board for their support.

umfries & Galloway Council is our latest Partner for Business. Charged with delivering support for industry and business, the Economic Development Service at Dumfries & Galloway Council is helping to drive growth in our rural economy.

When responsibility for Scotland’s regional economic regeneration and Business Gateway services moved away from Scottish Enterprise to local authorities in 2008 it meant a significant change in the way local businesses were supported. For Dumfries & Galloway Council, inheriting this role has given our local authority a more direct say in the development of our region, but assimilating regeneration and Gateway services into the department at a time of contracting public sector budgets was a challenging proposition. Dumfries & Galloway Council embraced the opportunity to steer the region’s economic future, embarking on internal restructuring and the formalisation of the new Economic Development department, while successfully securing European funding to allow the creation of new sector targeted projects and new posts. Economic Development has a broad reach, supporting business, industry, sectors, infrastructure, the environment, countryside and employees within the region, and it is now organised into four service teams: Business and Enterprise manages the Business Gateway contract, the Creative Clusters project and provides support for sectors including Tourism, Food & Drink, Renewables, Forestry, Social Enterprise, Screen Commission, events, European projects and the gathering of economic intelligence. Strategic Projects delivers physical regeneration projects across the region with a focus on the strategic priorities of Dumfries, Stranraer and the Corridor Regeneration Strategy areas of Gretna, Lockerbie and Annan.
Countryside Services consists of two teams, the Access Team, focusing on the Core Paths Plan and Access Strategy for the region, and Countryside Projects and Ranger Service. The latter have been established to provide community input and ownership at countryside sites across the region. The fourth service team, Employability and Skills, works to improve employment prospects for adults and young people, while also providing support for employers. Cllr Roger Grant, Chair of Planning, Housing and Environment Services Committee says the restructured Economic Development service is perfectly positioned to support Dumfries & Galloway’s economy:

By creating projects that can tap into European funding the Economic Development service is able to multiply the value of Dumfries & Galloway Council investment in business support. The South of Scotland Business Competitiveness Project, announced by Scottish Ministers during the cabinet visit to Stranraer in August, is a good example of this. Focusing on supporting the tourism, food and drink and renewables sectors, through drawing support services together and packaging them up into a distinct project, Economic Development has been able to add an additional 40% to the value of the project through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The European LEADER programme also forms part of the Economic Development support for the region. The team, based at Rural House in New Abbey, manage LEADER funding and other sources of support for rural communities across Dumfries & Galloway. Creative Clusters The South of Scotland Creative Clusters Programme is now 2 years into its 3 year project. Also funded by ERDF the programme is attached to Dumfries & Galloway Council and strongly aligned to the Business Gateway. Creative Clusters provides grants and one-to-one support to businesses, organisations and groups of businesses to support growth, development and collaborative working within the creative sector. Activity on the Tourism Front – Phase Three

he second half of 2011 was a busy time for the Mountain Bike Business Network. Thanks to the concerted efforts of the Chamber of Commerce’s Chief Executive Gordon Mann the project received VisitScotland Growth Fund and LEADER support to continue into phase three.

This has allowed Project Manager Tracey Saunderson to remain in post and make advances in electronic media as well as more traditional marketing options. The Network is going from strength to strength.
Despite only having a soft launch to allow for fixing any glitches the App was very quickly downloaded by potential visitors from countries across the world including the USA, Canada, the UK and Korea.
Tracey said: “The biggest piece of work we have undertaken is undoubtedly the new members-only App for iPhones which has been available as a free download since December. We went out to tender for this innovative new product in July and after reviewing the submissions we opted to work with iSpy, a Glasgow-based IT firm.

s Twitter and Facebook become more important places to promote the region, the website and the App we’re working hard to make sure our presence is felt in the social networking world.
In the Twitter world we now have over 300 followers from mountain bikers, potential visitors and local events promoters and we’re included in 16 outdoor activity lists. Tracey has been taking more time to Tweet and is making real headway with Twitter. She said: “Melissa Gunn from 7stanesmountainbiking.com is very good with social networking and she’s been a real help in showing me how to make the most of our presence on Facebook and Twitter. I had been making sure we had three Tweets a week by putting news, events and offers on the website but she explained that this isn’t enough. “I’ve followed her advice and now scan Tweets that our followers might be interested in so I can Retweet them. This shows that our Twitter account is playing an active role. “MBBN members can do their bit too by adding news, events or offers to the website at http://eat-sleep-ride.com. Anything added to this section is automatically fed out to Twitter and Facebook. “Facebook is another important way to get information out there and again Melissa has been a real help. As well as the feed from the website I now make sure I’m commenting on, sharing or liking posts regularly to show our followers and those that we are following that we are actually interested and active on the site. “It’s time consuming but even an hour a day has made a real difference. When I started playing a more active role our posts were reaching around three people. Now we are getting around 40 views per post and our potential reach through friends of friend and followers of followers is almost 20,000.” To help increase the MBBN social media presence please follow us on Facebook and Twitter and feel free to Retweet, comment, like and most importantly share anything of interest.

o far we’ve taken advertising space in VisitScotland’s Golf Guide in a bid to show the golfers who flock to the region that there is more on offer if they want to bring their families to Dumfries and Galloway. The Golf Guide is widely distributed through Tourist Information Centres across the UK, all UK and some international golf events. In addition there’s a full page double sided advert in the popular Landmark Press bedroom folders which will be distributed to 19,000 hotel rooms, caravan parks and guest houses in Ayrshire and Arran, Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders. The popular map leaflet is also in production and we’re looking at potential distributors to get it out to as wide an audience as possible.

A
tender document has been prepared in an attempt to make sure that Dumfries and Galloway has the best possible presence at exhibitions. Working with local businesses and other business networks we are working hard to identify a company which can design and build an exhibition stand which will be flexible enough to be used for a variety of shows. The stand will have static panels that show the region off to its best advantage as well as removable sections that can be replaced with artwork specific to groups or businesses that wish to use the stand. We hope to have this substantial and complicated piece of equipment ready in time for the Outdoor Pursuits Scotland Show at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh on the 21 and 22 of April and available for use throughout the rest of the year.

omen 1st has selected Dumfries & Galloway training and recruitment specialist, Minerva People to deliver its career enhancing training programmes for women working in Scotland’s hospitality, passenger transport, travel and tourism industries.

Women 1st is part industry and Skills Development Scotland funded and is the brainchild of People 1st, the sector skills council for hospitality, passenger transport, travel and tourism industries focusing on transforming skills through the development of world –class qualifications in management and leadership, customer service and craft skills. The sector employs nearly 2 million people in the UK accounting for 1 in 15 UK jobs. The sector contributes £38 billion accounting for nearly 4.5% of the UK’s total economic output. People 1st found that whilst 56% of the workforce is female, only 6% of board director positions are held by women. Women 1st has supported over 400 women in England and recently secured additional funding to extend the programme to benefit women in Scotland. Minerva People will initially conduct training programmes in Dumfries & Galloway, Glasgow and Edinburgh. The programme includes ‘Step Up’ which instills junior female managers with the confidence and skills needed to become the senior managers, chief executives and board members of tomorrow. Usually £2000 per delegate, People 1st secured a government subsidy to offer the programme to women in Scotland for just £300 per candidate. Furthermore, Scottish businesses that employ up to 150 employees may be eligible to apply and receive up to 50% of the cost of the programme utilising Flexible Learning Opportunities through Skills Development Scotland.

reative businesses across Dumfries & Galloway attended meetings in Dumfries and Newton Stewart recently to help launch &Creative, a new organisation for Dumfries & Galloway’s creative business services sector. &Creative showcases the wealth of creative business talent within the region and it is encouraging sole traders and businesses offering services such as web development, photography, graphic design, architecture and event management to work together to demonstrate the expertise within the region. The meetings took place on Thursday 17th November at The Globe Inn, Dumfries and Tuesday 22nd November at Creebridge House Hotel, Newton Stewart where the new website www.dandgcreative.co.uk was unveiled. The &Creative initiative is one of several collaborative projects supported by the South of Scotland Creative Clusters project, which provides help to groups of small businesses in Dumfries & Galloway to encourage joint working. Eric Brown, Creative Cluster Advisor at Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Business Gateway, says the &Creative project has significant potential. “Whilst there are many highly experienced and skilled people providing creative services in the region, the disparate and specialist nature of the industry means that the creative sector, particularly in a rural area such as this, often has a very low profile. That’s what &Creative seeks to address. “The ampersand represents Dumfries & Galloway, as well as a culture of co-operation and collaboration that’s so important in encouraging business growth and economic

A. My name is Jo Seawright, 40, trading as Virtual Executive Resource (including The Stewartry Link magazine) since January 2011. I live just outside Dumfries, with a business offering Virtual Office Assistant. There are no geographical restrictions to this but the magazine covers the Stewartry Area.

A. Make a thorough and detailed business plan, then double the start-up costs and double the time it takes to get financially on your feet, there are always things you can never account for.
Q. Have you met any interesting people through your work? A. I have met so many interesting people I couldn’t begin to count them … the local initiatives in Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas and Creetown, local artists, businesses, service providers, many of whom have been hugely supportive.
Q. What made you decide to set up your own business?
Q. What’s the best thing about living and working in Dumfries and Galloway?
A. I have always wanted to be either self-employed or running my own business, so after completing a Business Degree with the OU in 2009 and a certificate in both Business Systems and 6 Sigma I left DuPont Teijin Films (UK) Ltd and went on to work for a start-up company where I moved into an empty office (not even a carpet, desk or chair) charged with the task of getting the office and business procedures off the ground and many other related tasks. I suppose it felt like a half-way house for when I was doing it for my own business.
A. The community spirit has been amazing, there is so much going on most of which is accomplished by volunteers. Business and individuals are so generous with their time to ensure our communities not only survive but thrive… which means there are so many great things going on.
Q. Where are you now with the business and what are your aspirations and plans for the future?
After doing one or two other things on an employed basis I thought I saw a gap in the market with the recession where companies did not or could not commit to employing someone for any length of time but needed an extra pair of hands. To help me get known throughout the local business community I launched The Stewartry Link as a small community magazine.
A. Right now I am trying to push my core business further offering office/managerial support, bookkeeping and marketing services (amongst other things). I have two lovely ladies working on a self-employed basis to help with the magazine while I concentrate on this but the magazine will be taking more of a back-seat for 2012, especially as I hope to be working on a couple of new projects in the local Tourism and Food industry.
Q. What preparation did you do before setting up your own business? A. Apart from my degree and start-up experience I did a lot of research, both looking at what others offering a similar service were doing and talking to prospective customers extensively to try to gauge if there really was a need.
Q. What do you enjoy most about having your own business? A. I have, theoretically, more flexibility with my time, although I end up working far more hours than I ever did employed! I also enjoy meeting and working with all the
For the future I think it would be nice for the magazine to become completely run by the community for the community. Not sure if there is anyone out there who would be interested in getting involved. To accomplish this we may have to look to making the medium completely digital, on-line, and encouraging the content to grow from that platform, mainly due to the costs of printing and posting. As for me I hope to have an office in the town by the end of 2012 with at least one member of staff offering different forms of office support and design services including what I do best, analyzing and improving Business Processes.

We take a look at two organisations, longstanding members of the Chamber The Care Training Consortium and recent new members, Relationship Scotland.
The Care Training Consortium The Care Training Consortium is a local Dumfries Charity, Registered Scottish Company and Social Enterprise. The Consortium trains carers, support workers, volunteers and anyone involved with looking after vulnerable people. CTC believes implicitly in the rights of vulnerable people to be treated with dignity and respect, to make informed choices, feel safe and secure and be able to realise their full potential. By providing high quality training to all carers and support workers CTC endeavours to empower vulnerable people to achieve all the above principles and live independent high quality lives in their own home for as long as they wish to do so. This is directly in line with the future vision for Dumfries and Galloway under their Putting You First Programme. CTC works in partnership with the NHS and the Council and also the third sector. Barbara Radcliffe, the Consortium’s Chief Executive is also Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Social Enterprise Network. The Care Training Consortium started business in 2002 and have progressed from having just Barbara in a back office with a laptop, to 6 members of staff and a number of trainers/assessors who work for the charity on a consultancy basis. They have a volunteer management group made up of 3 directors and a treasurer. CTC work across the whole of Dumfries and Galloway and up to the central belt. From 2002 to the present day the charity have had almost 5000 different people come to train with them. Some may only have done one half day but others will have done several days and come back many times over the years. CTC has worked with around 111 different employers/ organisations. They are an approved centre for SQA SVQ Awards in Health and Social Care from Level 2 up to Level 4 – Leadership and Management.

Help is at Hand Recent addition to the Chamber, Relationships Scotland is gearing up for an increase in demand for its services as winter sets in and the recession really starts to hit home. Manager Jim Carruthers said: “It is probably a long time since the future for so many individuals, couples and families has looked so bleak. It’s hardly surprising that a growing number of people are struggling to manage their lives.” Through Relationships Scotland help is at hand for anyone who needs it to support conflict resolution, improve communication skills and make decisions about the future. n increasing number of social enterprises have joined Chamber as they see the benefits of working directly with the business community and getting access to the range of services that comes with Chamber membership. Often referred to as a ‘not for profit sector’ Social Enterprises must at least break even or better still make a surplus to build up some reserves to reinvest in their business. In these difficult times Social Enterprises need to take exactly the same steps as any business by controlling costs and finding new revenue sources.

n a bid to encourage Dumfries and Galloway businesses to reduce their carbon impact and travel costs, the Energy Saving Trust Scotland is offering businesses interest free loans of between £500 and £50,000 for measures to make their transport and travel arrangements more sustainable. The Energy Saving Trust is keen to encourage applications from organisations in Scotland, including private sector businesses, the government, community organisations and, the public and voluntary sectors. Funded by Transport Scotland, the low carbon transport loans can be used to meet costs to help businesses in Scotland reduce their environmental impact. This could include installing video and teleconference facilities, bikes and bike storage units, fleet management software, vehicle efficiency devices (that don’t void the manufacturer’s warranty) or low carbon vehicles.
