Captain’s Foreword

W

elcome to the inaugural yearbook of The Eastwood Golf Club. As Club Captain, I am delighted to be able to offer this comprehensive introduction to our visitors, guests and potential members. Founded in 1893, Eastwood has existed in its current location since 1937, being modified in 2003, when part of the course was the subject of a compulsory purchase order to accommodate the M77 extension. As a private Club, Eastwood has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for visitors and guests alike, offering excellent facilities. The course is a challenging 6,071 yards from the white tees over 18 holes of undulating moorland, with a par of 70. There is a practice ground, including a chipping green and practice bunkers, as well as two putting greens, all of which are available to all golfers and where our Professional, Stuart Wilson, can provide excellent tuition.

4

We are happy to welcome groups of visitors for outings, by prior arrangement, and have flexible packages to suit all tastes. Our Halfway House is also available as a welcome facility between the tenth green and eleventh tee, and can be used for hospitality. The clubhouse can offer a wide variety of accommodation from formal meals for up to 90 people or for smaller more intimate numbers, depending on your requirements. Our hope is that your experience of Eastwood leaves you with a desire to come back to visit us again. This yearbook offers just a taste of what Eastwood has to offer, but only a visit will provide the whole picture. We look forward to seeing you.

R Aird Captain

Club History

T

he original Eastwood Golf Club was founded in 1891 when a 9-hole golf course was created in land at the end of Orchard Drive, described at the time as “lying between the villages of Giffnock and Thornliebank”. The course was opened on 14 May 1892 and it ended the year with funds in the bank. Unfortunately the original members were a fickle lot and when they were offered new ground in Pollokshaws they all resigned, relocated themselves in Pollokshaws and founded Pollok Golf Club. With the original course lying fallow a group from the Glasgow YMCA formed a new Club on the original course and so Eastwood Golf Club was founded (again!) in 1893. The course had expanded to 18 holes in 1911 and the Club prospered at a time when golf courses were springing up all over the West of Scotland. By the time of the First World War Eastwood was a well established Club in an expanding suburb of Glasgow. Unfortunately the expansion of Glasgow resulted in Glasgow Corporation, who were the Clubs landlords terminating the lease in 1936. Cometh the hour, cometh Bertie Brand. Led by Club Secretary R D Brand and a Committee of powerful and capable individuals, such as Jack Malcolm who served as Match and Handicap Secretary from 1932-1949, John W Jarvie who served 2 years as Captain in 1936 and 1937 and many others, Eastwood moved from Giffnock to Loganswell on 31 December 1936 without a break in play.

6

The new course was designed by Theodore Moone (the pen name for Matthew Monie) perhaps better known as a writer and journalist - but who also had a good reputation as a golf course architect. The Second World War intervened to rob Eastwood of many of its players and it was reckoned that up to one third of the membership were involved in war work. Two of the Clubs scratch golfers K B Murray and J C More lost their lives in the War. In 1944 the Club got the opportunity to purchase the course and did so for the princely sum of £3,000.00 The course remained largely unchanged until 2003 when as the result of a Compulsory Purchase Order by the Scottish Office a large part of the course was lost to enable the construction of the M77 motorway. Again the Committee got to work and after negotiations lasting a number of years additional land was acquired which enabled the course to be re-designed with holes 5-11 being formed largely on the area purchased from a neighbouring farmer. Ably assisted by the Secretary Vernon Jones and a number of Captains and Committee Members from 1994 onwards, Murray McAllan, the Captain in 2001, was the driving force behind completion of the redesigned Course in 2003. Eastwood has had many fine golfers over the years. Andrew Jamieson famous for his victory over Bobby Jones in the British Amateur was a member. Another member John Stirling turned professional, played in the Open on a number of occasions and captained PGA in 1989.

Henry Cotton and A D Locke both played exhibitions at Eastwood while they were reigning Open Champions in 1938 and 1950 respectively and Fred Daly, another Open Champion played an exhibition in 1961 with John Panton, Peter Mills and Norman Drew. When the new holes were opened in 2003 Alistair Forsyth played an exhibition, restricted to 12 holes. Others who have played Eastwood include Eric Brown, Ryder Cup Player and Captain, and in 1984 a young Colin Montgomerie in the Scottish Youths. Among Eastwoods achievers R D Brand, Captain in 1925 and Secretary from 1929-1945 captained the Scottish Team in the Home Internationals at Royal Lytham in 1951 and co-founded the Brand Putter League in 1947. Grant Thomson won tournaments throughout Scotland and was a Scottish Youths Cap in 1990 and 1991. Shirley Lawson won the Scottish Ladies Championship in 1988 and 1989 following victories in the Renfrewshire County, West of Scotland and the Scottish Universities Championships and she and her late sister Karen were the first and so far only girls to win the Junior Foursomes in 1981. Shirley was also a Scottish Internationalist and a Curtis Cup Player.

Caroline Agnew was the Scottish Girls Champion in 1993 and was runner up in the Scottish Ladies Championship in 1998. On the administrative side the outstanding member has been Mrs Wendy Cameron. Ladies Secretary for 15 years from 1966 to 1981, Renfrewshire County Captain in 1982 and 1983, Chairman of the Scottish Selectors in 1987 and 1988, Chairman of the Executive of the SLGA in 1988 and 1989, Captain of the Scottish Ladies Veterans Team in 1991and President of the SLGA from 1997 to 2000. She is currently an Honorary Vice-President of the SLGA. Wendy has undoubtedly been Eastwood’s highest profile member in the hierarchy of Scottish Ladies Golf and has kept Eastwood’s name to the fore nationally. Eastwood’s new course has built up a reputation as being a tough test of golf. Its Junior Teams have won the Fleming Watson League 4 years in a row from 2004 to 2007 under the convenorship of Dave King. However, for most members winning competitions in leagues is not what they are about. The friendship and camaraderie of the members means much more to them and to many who play at Eastwood. Over the years the Club has built up the enviable reputation of being one of the friendliest golf clubs in the West of Scotland.

s with many clubs, our numbers seem to have waned somewhat over recent years, but the enthusiasm has certainly not. Our major competitions and social events are extremely well supported and we hope that this will continue this year. While the weather last year took its toll on many of the competitions, it did not completely dampen the spirits of our hardy group, even when the fun competition was reduced to chipping and putting and had to be held indoors. The Greenlees and GSLGL teams had mixed fortunes but still were placed in a creditable 3rd and 5th positions in their respective leagues. Congratulations are due to our current Club Champion, Cathy Morton, and the Bronze Trophy winner, Angela Fergusson.

Junior

T

he Eastwood Golf Club has long been regarded as a fantastic source of junior golfing talent. This was probably best reflected in their recent achievement of having won The Fleming Watson League 4 Years in a row from 2004 – 2007. While some of our better players from these successful seasons have now moved on to senior amateur golf or even to professional golf, others have moved away due to university or other commitments. That said we still have a very enthusiastic group of junior boys and girls, who are very well looked after by a group of adults who willingly give of their time to encourage our young golfers.

Pro Shop Head Pro Profile

Pro Shop

Stuart Wilson was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife in February 1976 and started playing golf aged 12. In 1994 he turned Professional and worked as an Assistant in the Pro Shop at Kirkcaldy Golf Club. 4 Years at Kirkcaldy were followed by 6 years at Ladybank Golf Club, an open qualifiying course near St. Andrews. It was there that Stuart, under the tutelage of Martin Gray, blossomed as a coach and developed a solid reputation. That reputation helped open the door to his next move, a teaching position at The Gleneagles Hotel where in his 4 years there he became Head of Instruction. Although coaching was a major part of his career his desire was always to become a successful Club Professional which has brought him to The Eastwood Golf Club.

Stuart and his staff are always on hand to provide 1st class customer service whether it be tuition, club fitting, repairs or general golf advice you seek.

Stuart says; “Golf is a game for everyone and a game for life! Whether it’s the challenge of learning and improving, the exercise and escape, or the attraction of new technology and fashions, golf gives so much pleasure in many different guises. If you are part of golf enjoy every moment of it, if you are an outsider wondering what all the fuss is about I encourage you to give it a crack......you will love it for whatever reason!”

22

Drop into the Pro Shop and you will find a fantastic selection of products from many of the leading brands to suit all your golfing needs. There is a wide range of clubs, clothing, bags and accessories at GREAT prices. If you want to play the part the Pro Shop currently has latest equipment ranges from Callaway, Cleveland, Ping, Srixon, Taylormade, Tour Edge and Wilson to get the best out of your game. The chance to trial and Custom fitting is always available. Demo days for the above companies run throughout the season – see website for details. If just looking the part is what you enjoy they have a fabulous clothing range for both ladies and gents including the latest fashions by Adidas, Cutter & Buck, Daily Sports, Galvin Green, Glenmuir, Green Lamb and Greg Norman. With shoes by Adidas, Footjoy and Stuburt. A quality repairs service including a wide selection of grips, shafts and spikes is also available.

Practice Facilities

Whether you would like to learn golf so you can play with your friends, go further at work or you just want to try something new or perhaps you already play and are simply looking to hit better shots or are desperate to score better and lower your handicap, a lesson from Stuart could be the answer. Formerly the head of instruction at The Gleneagles Hotel, Stuart has been coaching for over 15 years, during this time he has experienced a huge variety of people, all with different goals, abilities, expectations and learning styles. All lessons are tailored to your requirements and combined with his knowledge and friendly approach create a fun environment to improve and learn.

Eastwood Golf Club boasts a fantastic practice facility that the club is actively looking to improve year on year. Easily accessible from the clubhouse, the practice area has both long game and short game areas. The long game range has grass and astroturf hitting areas, multiple targets and is over 300 yards long. The short game area features a large pitching/chipping area, course standard green and bunkers.

Includes DartďŹ sh computer swing analysis and take home CD.

There are also two excellent putting greens at Eastwood. The ďŹ rst and largest is situated in front of the clubhouse and allows you to experience every putt you might face on the course. The second, near the 1st tee allows you to warm up your putter and establish the speed of the greens before you play.

The Course

The Eastwood Golf Club was founded in 1893. Our first site was in Orchard Park, Giffnock, but due to housing development on the original site we relocated to Muirshield in 1937. The original course at Muirshield was designed by Theodore Moone (who also designed the reconstructed Barassie). The most recent development of new holes and remodelled greens have been designed by Graeme Webster and constructed by Geddes Contractors (Arbroath). This new layout has seen the course grow from it’s original 5864 yard Par 68 to a very demanding 6071 Par 70. The added length, exposure to the fresh westerly breeze and the undulating USGA greens provide a great test of golf for all abilities. While the character and views created by the rolling hills and surrounding scenery make this the ideal location for a great day out. The course has a terrific blend of demanding Par 3’s, rewarding Par 4’s and enjoyable Par 5’s with the signature Par 3 11th one that will last long in your memory.
