OPEN SECRET OPEN SECRET

Services for individuals and families affected by childhood abuse Do you know someone who has been affected by these issues? Could your business support a worthwhile local charity to enable more survivors to access support? Want to know more about Open Secret? J was abused as a child from the ages of 8 – 13 by her stepfather. J is now 40 years old and has suffered from depression and panic attacks for over 20 years. J came to Open Secret 2 years ago. Through the support offered by Open Secret, and her own courage and resilience, J was able to face these difficult memories and emotions, learn to trust, recover some of her self esteem and finally lay the blame for the abuse where it belonged. This is a fictional case study made up from experiences shared by many of the survivors of childhood abuse who use Open Secret’s services.

elcome to this, our second edition of InCommerce Business to Business magazine for the Falkirk and district area. We have received some very positive feedback on the look, feel and content of Edition one. However, we want to ensure that it remains relevant to businesses and are keen to ensure that InCommerce is used to showcase the many positive things about businesses in the Falkirk and district area. Falkirk for Business is not merely an organisation that delivers the Business Gateway contract and arranges local networking events. We aim to create the ideal environment for business. We will continue to strive to develop our network of support for local businesses to access relevant training, business advice, mentoring, and financial support to help grow local businesses and create employment opportunities. The Falkirk Business Exhibition took place on Friday, 17th June 2011 at Falkirk Town Hall and delivered all of the above. The day was action packed and attracted over 50 exhibitors and several hundred visitors with numbers up 15% on last year. You can read more about the Exhibition and view the photographs on pages 6 and 7. As always we welcome your feedback on InCommerce as the success of the publication is in your hands. It needs to be relevant and interesting to businesses in the area so, please feel free to let us know your likes and dislikes, and tell us what you think of this edition. Don’t forget to send us articles or case studies which you think other businesses will be interested in hearing about. We would love to publish your success stories! I am sure that you, like us, continually look at your business to ensure that you are doing things as effectively and efficiently as possible in delivering exceptional customer service. I hope that some of the articles in this edition will help you in each of these areas. As always we thank our sponsors, advertisers and contributors as, without your support, we would not be able to produce this publication. Laurence Barrett CEO

The Small Business Bonus –

A lifeline just at the right time As we collectively pull ourselves out of the aftermath of the recession it is generally acknowledged that small and medium sized firms are a vital part of Falkirk District’s economic recovery therefore it is essential that we all work together to ensure SMEs are protected. In 2007 the minority SNP Government recognised that Scotland’s small businesses had been neglected for too long and as much as possible had to be done to support them. Angus MacDonald MSP

The introduction of the Small Business Bonus has helped keep corner shops, town centre shops and small manufacturing firms open during the recession and now has a key role to play in ensuring our district recovers strongly. At the last count 1730 premises in Falkirk District have benefited from the SBB over the past four years, with local businesses saving £2801 in the first two years of the scheme. The Small Business Bonus has delivered £450 million of support to Scotland’s small and medium enterprises over the last 4 years, reducing or removing business rates for 80,000 businesses and supporting small businesses in taking on 40,000 new employees – matching employment amongst larger firms.

From 1 April 2010 the thresholds of the Scheme increased. The Scheme provides relief to ratepayers with properties in Scotland with a combined rateable value of £18,000 or less. In addition, the Scheme has been expanded and, where the cumulative rateable value of a ratepayer’s properties falls between £18,000 and £25,000, the Scheme will offer 25% relief to individual properties with a rateable value of up to £18,000.

4

The Scheme currently provides the following relief:

Up to £10,000 – 100% relief £10,001 to £12,000 – 50% relief £12,001 to £18,000 – 25% relief Upper limit for cumulative rateable value £25,000* – 25% relief *This will allow a ratepayer with 2 or more properties with a cumulative rateable value of under £25,000 to qualify for relief at 25% on individual properties with a rateable value less than £18,000. While other parties argued against the SBB the Scottish Government is well aware of the importance small businesses play in communities, as employers and in creating growth in

our economy. Thankfully, since the election, all the major political parties at Holyrood have now accepted the benefits of SBB, and the newly re-elected Scottish Government has pledged to retain the scheme for the five year period of the current SNP administration. While there are serious budget cuts heading to Scotland from Westminster I know that this further five year commitment will be of comfort to small business owners the length and breadth of Falkirk District. It is clear from speaking to many recipients of the Small Business Bonus in this area that it has made a tremendous impact at a difficult time for retailers and manufacturers. The Small Business Bonus is one of the few direct financial measures the Scottish Government can take within its current powers to help boost our economy. It is a sign of what can be done to support Scotland’s economy. You can rest assured that in my new role as a Member of the Scottish Parliament’s Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee I will champion the needs of the business community in Falkirk District at every opportunity, and look forward to meeting with as many of you as possible over the next five years. Angus MacDonald MSP Member of the Scottish Parliament for Falkirk East Until his election to the Scottish Parliament Angus MacDonald was the SNP’s Economic Development and Transport Spokesperson at Falkirk Council. He has recently been appointed to the Scottish Parliament’s powerful Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee and the Scottish Commission for Public Audit. BUSINESS

EXHIBITION it’s the business

The 4th annual business exhibition took place at Falkirk Town Hall on Friday June 17th, and was declared a resounding success by those who attended. Over 50 exhibitors began setting up on Thursday evening and it was obvious that businesses were upping their game when it came to creating eye-catching exhibition stands to draw in the visitors. Where else could you win an ipad, (courtesy of Martin Robertson Associates Ltd), or guess the whereabouts of a missing bee? (Signs Express)

The Falkirk forBusiness Magazine

Issue 2 • September 2011

Despite miserable weather, the exhibition proved to be a very popular place with visitor numbers up by 15% on last year. Changes to the parking arrangements made a big difference with designated parking for exhibitors at the rear of the building, and visitors able to park in the front. Some good feedback has been received on this, and we will continue to consider ways to make this even better for next year.

6

The exhibition itself was busy throughout the day and many people commented on the very positive atmosphere throughout:

“Incredibly lively and lots of good networking. Good overall atmosphere” “It was a busy day and we gathered a lot of interest in what we do…I was very pleased with the event” “Well run and well advertised” “Best yet!” Although sandwiches and free teas/coffees/water were available, some exhibitors missed the lunch packs from previous years, with one wishing there had been “something hot to eat”. Under tight budget restraints, it had been hoped that hot food would not be needed in mid-June, but the Scottish “summer” seemed to put paid to that plan! Perhaps a market here for a mobile chippy for next year?

2011

FALKIRK

In terms of the networking being done, most exhibitors reported success;

“Busier and provided more leads than last year” “Have used the fair for 3 years now and it has always been good for my business” “Made some good contacts for the future so well worth coming along” and certainly there was a steady hum of conversation and exchange of business cards throughout the day. Three seminars also took place during the event, delivered by The Carbon Trust, The Supplier Development Programme and The National Skills Academy for Retail. There was not a huge take up of these from exhibitors, but those that did attend fed back that the sessions had been of interest and worthwhile. If anyone has any suggestions for seminars for next year, then please do let us know!

The Falkirk forBusiness Magazine

A date has yet to be fixed for next year, but please keep an eye on our website over the coming months as Exhibition 2012 is sure to be a sell out!

Issue 2 • September 2011

Overall then, a great day was had, and as ever our thanks go to Stark Events who made sure the event ran like clockwork. The comment “Very well organised” appeared on almost every feedback sheet in one form or another and their assistance in organising the annual exhibition is much appreciated.

Premier Advisors At Falkirk for Business, our team of four Premier Advisors has just become five! Former Conference Centre Manager Mandy Campbell has just graduated with flying colours to adopt a new role within the organisation. She takes up the tale……

“I joined Falkirk for Business in 1998 to become the Training Centre Assistant, moving on to become the Training Centre Co-ordinator and was then promoted to the role of Training and Conference Centre Manager, a role which I really enjoyed. In 2010 I was given the opportunity to develop and advance my career by becoming a Business Advisor. I have always believed that if you are given an opportunity in life then you should take it, so I did, and embarked on my Premier Advisor journey.

8

Premier Advisor is a professional development programme originally designed in response to the June 2000 report from the Scottish Parliament Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Committee. The report called for a formally accredited development programme for economic development professionals to provide a commonly accepted standard for all business advice offered in Scotland. Premier Advisor is the first and central stage in this process. It consists of knowledge development, workshops, workplace learning assignments, casework, action learning and CPD. The programme is now being applied to areas other than business advice, in order to enhance the professionalism and delivery of impacts throughout the network. Having been very comfortable in my role as Training and Conference Centre Manager, I was now being taken out of my comfort zone. How did I feel? A bit apprehensive but looking forward to the challenge that lay ahead.

I attended my induction in March 2010 and met up with the rest of my group. There was no going back now! Over the course of the next year, I completed workplace learning, online learning, assignments and case studies, as well as attending the workshops and CPD events. I remember sitting down to start my first assignment, thinking to myself “what have I done” but I got through that one and then on to the next. My manager had a chat to me one day with regard to the workplace learning; he felt it was time that I started to get involved in running our training courses. My first thought, was panic, followed by more panic! The night I took my first training course, our Introduction to Business Workshop, was nerve-wracking but I now regularly take two workshops and am about to embark on a third. I completed the Premier Advisor programme in May this year. The main thing the programme gave me was confidence and belief in my abilities. To round things off my colleagues treated me to a surprise graduation which was a great way to end this part of my journey. Next, a new chapter will begin with my role as a Premier Business Advisor at Falkirk for Business and I’m really looking forward to working with our clients and the challenges they face, and being part of the Business Advisor Team.” Mandy joins David Brown, Dorothy Henke, Cameron Ferguson and John Judge.

Social Enterprise and the Private Sector Doing Good Business by Douglas Westwater

A misunderstanding. A few years ago a social enterprise presented a business idea at the Dragons’ Den on TV. One of the dragons articulated what they were all thinking: “If I want to give money to charity I will do that and I will give it to whomever I like. I am here to invest in real businesses.” There are a lot of bad social enterprises as there are a lot of bad private sector businesses, but this comment highlighted a fundamental misunderstanding about what was presented to them.

So what is a social enterprise? Like “what is art”, many a drink has been shared over such a question. The world’s first social enterprise may be dated from 1769 when weavers in Fenwick founded the first co-op, bulk buying oatmeal for its members. Adam Smith, writing at around that time, observed that “no society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable.”

The Falkirk forBusiness Magazine

Issue 2 • September 2011

Another Scot, New Lanark mill owner Robert Owen, who pioneered the concept of social change through good business rather than charitable hand-out, took this observation further forward. He said:

10

“It is therefore in the interest of all that everyone, from birth, should be well educated, physically and mentally that society may be improved in its character - that everyone should be beneficially employed, physically and mentally, that the greatest amount of wealth may be created, and knowledge attained….” (A Development of the Principles & Plans on which to establish self-supporting Home Colonies, 1841) So how does this translate into today’s business world? Fundamentally, social enterprise is a dynamic way of doing business that can transform communities and drive profound and lasting social change. It is the same as a private business except in one regard – though it needs and works towards profit, it is motivated not by that profit, but by the social change it effects. Social enterprises operate in all areas of the economy from tourism to catering, furniture to construction. Many social enterprises are in direct competition with private sector businesses and in recent years have learnt to operate professionally in this world.

What can the private sector gain from social enterprises? The Scottish Social Enterprise Coalition and the Chamber of Commerce last year delivered a range of events all over Scotland called ‘a Community of Business’ to show the common ground between the private and the social enterprise sectors. Many social enterprises have a long track record of mutually beneficial work with private sector colleagues. Building these relationships has often been frustrating, and both sides have had to find creative solutions to overcome motivational differences. The big picture is that merging social impact and entrepreneurial spirit presents a means through which Scotland can address poverty, develop a genuinely entrepreneurial culture and achieve sustainable economic growth. The benefit to the private sector of working with social enterprises is much more than fulfilling a corporate social responsibility requirement and helping with brand profile, though that can still be the case. The Scottish Government is moving towards the embedding of community benefit clauses (CBCs) in public sector contracts so that 10% of the scoring in any tender will relate to the social impact of the contract delivered. All contracts for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games have this requirement and this has enabled Unity Enterprises to win a catering contract for one of the lead contractors. A large and well known UK wide construction company contacted us here at Community Enterprise just last week asking for us to broker sub-contracting relationships with social enterprises in the Lothians. This will assist them to score well in this component and will allow smaller enterprises to be involved in contracts that would normally be out of their reach, ultimately enriching the impact of the final works. Many private sector companies are using social enterprises as labour suppliers, both assisting long term unemployed people into work while securing supply of quality labour to companies.

Scotland's third sector has been given a ‘massive boost' with the launch of two new programmes to help enterprising organisations grow and operate more efficiently. The Just Enterprise programme and the Enterprise Growth Fund are accessed through a new online access point at www.justenterprise.org.uk Just Enterprise business support is available for social entrepreneurs and enterprising Third Sector organisations. A range of support from a telephone advisory service, one to one development support, business consultancy and workshops, learning programmes and leadership courses are available.

It would seem then, that the Dragons’ Den incumbents missed the point of what a social enterprise is and how it operates. Not only are they out there doing real business, they are doing “good” business! Douglas Westwater is the Executive Director of Community Enterprise, a national independent business development agency focussed on supporting the social enterprise sector in Scotland. See www.communityenterprise.co.uk for more information.

Finance Secretary John Swinney launched the programmes on Monday 18th July at the offices of Specialisterne in Glasgow. The social enterprise, which trains people with Autism Spectrum Disorders, has built the online access point for both programmes. Mr Swinney said: “Social enterprises, voluntary organisations and community organisations play an important part in Scottish society. They can deliver superb services, from creating employment opportunities to connecting with most the vulnerable people in our society. These two new programmes will work closely together to make sure that the organisations we fund benefit from appropriate business support.” Gerry Higgins, CEiS Chief Executive Officer, said: “An enterprising Third Sector deserves high-quality business support and learning services delivered by those that understand the sector. Just Enterprise will provide scaledup, joined up business development services for enterprising Third Sector organisations across Scotland. Our goal is net growth for the sector. That means increasing the number of new organisations and the value of existing organisations. Just Enterprise is delighted the Scottish Government has continued to support the sector through the launch of this initiative.” The Wise Group with partners CEiS, DSL and the Social Value Lab, has been awarded the contract to manage and administer a £4 million Scottish Government Fund to support growth and development of the Third Sector in Scotland. Enterprise Growth Fund will be awarding grants between £25,000 and £200,000 to support long term objectives. Awards will be made to those organisations that demonstrate the greatest potential for growth and sustainability. The fund will invest in organisational services and structures and will be open to applications from late August. For more information call 0141 303 3131. To give one last example, a new website is being piloted right now (www.se-venues.co.uk) aimed at private sector purchasers of training, meeting and conference space assisting them to make an ethical purchase.

Just Enterprise will deliver business support and learning services across Scotland and will integrate for the first time, start up, business support and learning and development services. Successful applicants to the programme will receive a range of support including client management advisory services, feasibility studies, business planning, marketing, financial management and developing the sustainability of an Enterprising Third Sector.

Opening Doors to Success Falkirk-based company HomeSlide Door Systems Ltd are on track for yet more success as their business continues to go from strength to strength despite the current difficult economic climate. Run by directors Finlay Ferguson and John Cowan, the company provides a vast range of bespoke products and unique designs for jobs ranging from re-glazing mirror doors to refitting entire rooms. Finlay and John first met in 1985 when they began working as furniture fitters in Cumbernauld and then went on to establish several successful door manufacturing companies in the Glasgow area. In 2009 they decided to establish a workshop in Falkirk, attracted by the excellent location. “With Edinburgh only 20 minutes away and Glasgow 30 minutes away, it made perfect sense to re-locate in Falkirk” explained Finlay. They approached Falkirk for Business for assistance, and found the courses provided very useful. “It really helped build our confidence to attend the Falkirk for Business courses” said John, “The Risk Assessment course in particular helped us to see that big is not necessarily beautiful in terms of premises. We also learned a tremendous amount about profit and loss, and how to keep the business solvent – always important!” Finlay and John went on to build the business based on high standards of customer service and a painstaking eye for fine detail. A free survey is carried out for each customer, and there seems to be no limit to the options available to keep the customer satisfied. Finlay is very honest when it comes to outlining the main challenges and top tips for running a successful business: “Be prepared for very long hours to keep promises made to secure contracts so that clients know you can be relied on to deliver. There will be bad days but always be honest and up front – if you can come up with a cheaper solution, then let the customer know. That always works for us.”

Xtreme Karting

e ov C

Xtreme Success for Falkirk Karting Company Brothers Scott and Barrie Henderson, directors of Falkirk company Xtreme Karting, have had plenty to shout about this year. In the 7 years since they first started the business they have achieved not one, but two, 5 star ratings as visitor attractions. This unique accolade is all the more impressive considering that their new venue in Edinburgh, which only opened earlier this year, achieved its 5 star award at the first attempt!

The business idea for Xtreme Karting came about when Barrie faced redundancy in 2003 and approached Falkirk for Business for help and advice in how to set up a business. As a passionate karter, he wanted to use his knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport to set up an indoor track in the area. Once underway, he received ongoing help to access funding to support growth, and also assistance with PR and marketing. As the business went from strength to strength, and brother Scott joined the team, continued work with Falkirk for Business helped them to progress onto the “Growth Pipeline”, thus enabling access to further support in strategic development and expansion. Despite all the success Barrie is quick to point out the many challenges still faced by the business.

The brothers’ top tips for starting up a business? “Make sure you have a passion for your business, and do as much research as you can. There is a lot of help out there - take advantage of it!” Business Panel Plus members can experience Xtreme Karting for themselves free of charge at a networking lunch taking place on September 6th. Contact Falkirk for Business for more details. (Photographs show Scott and Barrie Henderson and also the corporate facilities)

“We have been able to reduce costs by improving the way we use I.T. in our booking system,” adds Scott, “and having two centres open means we have been able to be cost efficient in only using one booking centre and sharing advertising costs etc. Also our staff are very flexible in working across both venues and adapting to change – they are a huge asset to the company. We are also developing our corporate facilities and have a conference room with full I.T. and A.V. available for hire for those who want a meeting place with a difference.”

Being in Falkirk has been a good starting point for the organisation, as its central location and excellent transport links make it ideal for visitors looking for ways to spend their leisure time. Barrie points out that there is a need for visitor attractions in the area to communicate with each other and work together so that tourists stay longer and see Falkirk as a place in which to spend more time.

The Falkirk forBusiness Magazine

“At the moment it is a very difficult environment to grow a leisure/corporate-activity based business. Customers have less disposable income and corporate clients are under significant pressure to reduce their budgets” he said. “We have had to implement a number of key strategies to reduce costs and grow the business. For example we have adjusted our event packages to suit smaller groups, developed new ways of operating to increase utilisation of the track and embraced social media marketing methods with over 6000 fans on our Facebook page!”

Homes of the Future

Rising unemployment and dramatically increasing fuel prices could lead to significant fuel poverty in the UK unless more is done to invest in energy efficiency. Gas and electricity bills for millions of homes are expected to rocket in the coming years, as suppliers attempt to offset rising wholesale prices, energy analysts have warned.

The Falkirk forBusiness Magazine

Issue 2 • September 2011

Households are considered by the UK Government to be in fuel poverty if they have to spend more than 10% of household income on fuel to keep their home to an adequate standard of warmth. One of the most effective ways of combating fuel poverty is to target energy efficiency measures in homes typically occupied by those on low incomes.

16

AppleGreen Homes, led by Falkirk-based CEO Alan Wallace, is working with Glasgow Caledonian University and Glasgowbased Spacesix Architects to research and develop an affordable, energy efficient home for the future at the new BRE Innovation Park at Ravenscraig in Motherwell. It will feature a solar energy package that will not only help significantly reduce electricity bills but will also drastically reduce heating bills, helping to eradicate fuel poverty. In addition, a guaranteed feed-in tariff from the solar electricity package will be paid to the owner, developer, housing association or council. The BRE Scotland Innovation Park was inspired by the BRE Innovation Park in Watford and aims to showcase the future of Scottish housing in the first phase, with nondomestic properties to follow later. This will be achieved by demonstrating full scale buildings that include future techniques, technologies and processes that will drive a step change in the construction industry. Taking a plot on the BRE Innovation Park for three years, AppleGreen Homes will demonstrate an affordable, energy efficient house. AppleGreen aims to keep costs down with

offsite construction and speed of installation, sustainable recycled steel and eco-effective products. AppleGreen is working with sponsor partners including NorDan, a supplier of performance windows and doors to the UK construction industry, to showcase their products within the eco house. At Glasgow Caledonian University, experts in the School of the Built and Natural Environment are involved in researching and testing the AppleGreen eco house’s energy consumption credentials throughout the development. The environmental strategy for the house includes harvesting rain water, an exhaust air heat recovery system, effective insulation, under floor heating and solar energy panels. AppleGreen have recently been invited to build a house at the first of its type Innovation Park in North America, namely Portland, Oregon. Alan Wallace says: “Our recent work with Falkirk for Business has enabled us to move our product on at some pace, including trade delegation to India in October and possibly Brazil in December, allowing us to expand into the export market. Taking advantage of the GlobalScot network has also given us access to 700 senior professionals in major corporations around the world, for assistance and advice. The team at Falkirk have reacted very quickly to our needs, pointing us in the right direction and setting up meetings very quickly with other departments in Scottish Enterprise.” www.applegreenhomes.com

The latest data from the Annual Population Survey indicates that the number of women in self-employment in Scotland is around 31.3 per cent. The survey also showed that 18 per cent of Scottish small and medium-sized enterprise employers are women.

Regular attendee, Lindsay Pettigrew of Micropsec Computers Ltd, emphasised the benefits of attending: “As well as interesting subjects, it is great to meet so many positive minded women. The speakers do cover serious issues, yet the events are a lot of fun and people are very friendly and supportive.”

The Falkirk forBusiness Magazine

Starting a business can be an emotional roller coaster. That combination of excitement and terror! This is true for both men and women. But women have other issues which are not addressed at Business Startup courses. Talk to any woman who is starting her own business and the term “multi-tasking” will undoubtedly appear or “juggling” as we more often know it. The demands of babies, young children, teenagers and caring for the home and ageing relatives – some or all of these normally come into the picture.

‘Portdownie’ unveiled as name for Falkirk’s major canal side regeneration project

The Portdownie site adjoins the Falkirk Wheel.

‘We have big aspirations to see this area transformed into a vibrant community with new jobs, properties and businesses created in an attractive setting.

The partnership behind the 58 acre mixed use canal side development next to The Falkirk Wheel, which has recently received planning permission, has unveiled its new name – ‘Portdownie’. Falkirk Council and British Waterways Scotland collaborated as partners to take forward the masterplan application for this exciting development and have chosen the Portdownie brand to reflect the local historic name by which the canal basin is known. It was well received by the local community during the consultation phase. To coincide with the announcement of the Portdownie name, a new website www.portdownie.com is about to go live to provide more information, background and to show the opportunities for the expansive canal side site to potential developers and the local community. The Portdownie development is part of the continuing wider process to revitalise the Forth & Clyde canal corridor, which will include iconic regeneration projects such as the Lottery £43m funded Helix project and the Rosebank Distillery. Cllr Adrian Mahoney, Convener of Economic Strategy and Development said:

‘We are still at an early stage of the project but we have already allocated £100,000 to facilitate taking this project forward and are currently working how this project can be delivered.’ Steve Dunlop, Director, British Waterways Scotland said: “Portdownie is a hugely exciting development for Falkirk and it will really maximise the value and potential of The Falkirk Wheel and the Forth & Clyde Canal. Once complete, it will offer the full choice of homes, as well as some excellent waterside opportunities for commercial enterprises. “Most importantly, whilst Portdownie will occupy a unique setting close to The Falkirk Wheel and by the revitalised canal, it is not a development in isolation. It also benefits from being part of a wider, integrated and long-term placemaking initiative we are progressing along the greater canal corridor between Grangemouth and The Falkirk Wheel in partnership with Falkirk Council.” The plan for Portdownie, which lies to the west of Falkirk town centre, also supports My Future’s In Falkirk, the ten year economic development initiative for the Falkirk area.

Issue 2 • September 2011

Artist’s impression of the development, showing the existing Union Inn public house.

‘The canal offers great development opportunities for this natural resource as well as providing a fabulous leisure attraction with the marina and open spaces that it will offer. ‘As part of our brief to regenerate our area under the My Future’s In Falkirk strategy, Portdownie will see the creation of jobs and boosted economic prospects locally when delivered.

Falkirk Business Improvement District wins second term Local businesses in Falkirk town centre voted overwhelmingly in support of continuing the Business Improvement District (BID) with all the additional projects, services and funding that it brings to the town centre. Unusually the Falkirk BID had a first term lasting only three years instead of the more usual five years, so was the first BID in Scotland to go through the renewal process. The Falkirk BID incorporates the core retail area of the town, including both shopping centres, the bus station and the old Tesco site, a total of 540 businesses. Following voting in April and May it has now won a term of five years and will raise an estimated total levy income of £1,077,000 towards targeted projects and services to improve the town centre. A new business plan, developed in consultation with businesses and customers, outlines the BID’s plans to continue to deliver many highly successful projects. In recognition of the BID’s success, two Scottish Ministers, Fergus Ewing, Minister for Energy, Enterprise & Tourism and Aileen Campbell, Minister for Local Government and Planning, visited Falkirk in July. Corrie Cuthbertson, Chair of the Falkirk BID said: “I would like to thank the businesses in Falkirk town centre who voted for the continuation

of the BID and to reassure those that chose not to vote in favour of the BID that we will do our utmost to deliver projects and services over the coming five years that will benefit the whole of the town centre. Ian Davison Porter, Project Director, Business Improvement Districts Scotland concluded: “This is the first of the original BIDs to seek re election and the businesses of Falkirk town centre have obviously recognised the value of the Falkirk BID by returning an overwhelming yes vote. The coming years will be very exciting in Falkirk with the new BID delivering more and better projects and services for its businesses.”

Important Milestone Reached for Denny town centre The multi-million pound regeneration of Denny town centre reached an important milestone in August.

Issue 2 • September 2011

Underlying Falkirk Council’s commitment to the regeneration of the town centre, works are commencing on the demolition of a major section of the 1960s shopping centre. These works will remove over a third of the buildings while enabling businesses to continue to trade from the centre. Meanwhile the Council continues to finalise plans for delivery of a regenerated town centre. Central Demolition of Denny have been appointed to commence the demolition works at the Church Walk blocks from August. The partial demolition of block ‘A’ (opposite the town’s Post Office) will be carried out first and will take approximately 12 weeks to complete. Part of the block will be retained to enable two traders to continue operating from their premises. Work on removing block ‘D’ (opposite St Alexander’s Roman Catholic Church) will then start in January 2012 and will also last for 12 weeks.

A town centre regeneration office staffed by Falkirk Council Economic Development Officers will be open at 97 Church Walk each Tuesday morning for Denny residents and business to obtain further information about the regeneration activity planned for the town centre. Cllr Craig Martin, Leader of Falkirk Council said: ‘It has been a long wait for the town but we are pleased that the local community has persevered and can now see the start of the real work to transform the centre into a modern and attractive location. I’m additionally pleased that the contract has been successfully secured by a local company helping to support jobs for people in the Falkirk area. ‘There will be some disruption to traffic in and around the Duke Street and Davies Row areas and but we believe that this temporary arrangement will be worth it in the longer term. We have been liaising with the local schools to ensure safe routes to schools are maintained.’

Exciting and innovative bid could bring massive benefits to area

Hippodrome Wins Top Scottish Award

Falkirk Council and its partners, including Scottish Enterprise, Chemical Sciences Scotland and Falkirk Business Panel have been working on an exciting and innovative bid for Tax Incremental Finance (TIF) which could bring massive benefits to the area. The TIF scheme enables local authorities to kick-start developments in their area by borrowing against the predicted growth in future business rates that the new development will bring. The TIF model has been successfully used for a long time in the US and other countries but is new to the UK. Falkirk Council has applied to the Scottish Government’s Scottish Futures Trust to become one of six pilot areas for the scheme. If successful, the TIF pilot scheme will carry forward the ambitions contained in the area’s My Future’s in Falkirk initiative. The Falkirk area plays a vital role in the national economy, generating up to £3 billion annually and the TIF bid would help to ensure the continued development of the Falkirk-Grangemouth area, where the TIF project partners are working to create a new Zone for investment. The submission anticipates over £50m of capital investment which could generate up to £350m of private sector investment and create several thousand jobs. In order to realise this opportunity, investment in the local infrastructure is proposed, including improvements to the M9 corridor, site access and preparatory works and flood defences, which could be financed through TIF. The bid was submitted in August and its outcome is awaited.

Central FM hits the golden heights

Issue 2 • September 2011

L-R: Joe Kilday, Leighanne Coyle, John Quinn, Carole McConnell and John Slater with the Sony award.

Local radio station Central FM, covering Falkirk, Stirling and the Forth Valley, has been awarded the prestigious Gold Sony Radio Award for UK Local Radio Station of the Year 2011 at a celebrity packed ceremony in the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.

Considered to be ‘the Oscars of radio’, the evening was hosted by Chris Evans and the award was presented by singer James Morrison. The judges stated: “Central FM has a real energy about it. From presentation talent through story treatments and commercial activity, it is clear this is a vibrant station providing a comprehensive service which really identifies with its local community.” Launched in June 1990 Central FM has received many accolades and awards over the years, but this is the first Sony Gold. It comes as the station celebrated its 21st Birthday on 4 June and follows their Radio Academy Scotland Station of the Year award in 2010.

The Hippodrome Cinema in Bo’ness picked up the community benefit prize at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors’ (RICS) Scotland Awards for 2011. Head of the judging panel, Laura Johnstone, said: “The Hippodrome restoration is a perfect example of how bringing a building back into use can really benefit the local community.” The cinema was reopened in 2009 following restoration as part of the Bo’ness Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI), which has made a significant change to the town centre environment. The Hippodrome was also commended in the building conservation category, at a champagne reception and lunch in Edinburgh. Hippodrome representatives from Falkirk Council, Linlithgow architects Pollock Hammond, and Hippodrome owners, the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust, collected a trophy and framed certificate at the awards event. To achieve the award, the Hippodrome highlighted the 40,000 people it had attracted in the first two years since it re-opened, its regular engagement with audiences, including special community events; and the increased footfall it had generated in Bo’ness town centre.

falkirk business exhibition

Held on Friday 17th June at Falkirk Town Hall, the 2011 Falkirk Business Exhibition saw a 15% increase in visitor numbers and with over 50 exhibitors taking part, it made the event the biggest and best one yet. Feedback from exhibitors, some of whom have taken part before, indicated there was a real buzz about the place, a good atmosphere that helped make the event even better than last year’s. Networking was by far the most popular reason for exhibiting, with 91% stating this compared to 64% for sales opportunities. Visitors too valued the opportunity to network, with one commenting it was worthwhile coming along because they had made good contacts for the future. Both exhibitors and visitors overwhelmingly scored the event as excellent or good both in terms of organisation and overall impression, but some good suggestions were made for next year’s event so with these taken on board, they’ll be every reason to come back in 2012!

economic outlook In this edition, the economic outlook column looks at recently published statistics, including Scottish GDP and inflation, and reports on employment and income trends in the Falkirk area.

National Economic Outlook Base Rate The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee kept the base interest rate at 0.5% in July 2011. This is the lowest level since 1694 when the Bank was created. However, in July 2011, the European Central Bank increased their base rate to 1.50% from 1.25% which it had been at since April 2009. Inflation The UK Consumer Prices Index inflation (CPI) was down in June to 4.2% compared to 4.5% in May 2011. This rate is above the UK Government’s official +2% target. The downward effect to annual inflation came from recreation and culture, particularly games, toys and hobbies. The Retail Prices Index (RPI) was 5.0%, down from 5.2% in May 2011.

What’s happening in Falkirk? Income The average weekly pay for full time workers in Falkirk for 2010 was £478.00, this is an increase from the 2009 figure of £462.50. Falkirk is below the Scottish average for weekly pay, where it was £486.90 for 2010 and £471.20 in 2009. Both Scotland and Falkirk saw a 3% increase in weekly pay over the two years. Employment Employment in Falkirk has been decreasing since 2008 as a result of the recession. In 2010 there were 71,700 Falkirk residents in work, a decrease from 74,900 residents in work in 2008, however, the 2010 figure is around the same as it was in 2005 when 71,500 residents were in employment. The percentage of Falkirk working age residents in employment fell from 76.5% in 2008 to 71.7% in 2010. There was also a decline in the Scottish rate, which fell from 73.5% to 71%. Falkirk has remained above the Scottish rate since 2005. Source: Annual Population Survey, NOMIS

GDP The latest Scottish figures for the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) shows GDP grew by 0.1% in the 1st quarter of 2011 and grew by 1.3% over the year. In comparison UK GDP grew by 0.5% in the 1st quarter in 2011 and grew by 2.0% over the year. Within the sectors during the 1st quarter of 2011 output in Scotland in the Service sector grew by 0.3%, the Production sector also grew by 0.9%, however, the Construction sector fell by 3.6%. The UK experienced a growth in the Service sector by 0.9%, however, in the Production sector output fell by 0.1% and the Construction sector fell by 3.4%. Source: Scottish Government.

Unemployment Jobseekers Allowance benefit is one of the most up-to-date data sets that can be used to provide a fairly immediate measure of what is happening in the local economy. It shows that for Falkirk the rate of unemployment has fallen since the beginning of 2011 from 4.8% in January to 4.6% in June

With 5.62% taken away from the Scottish GDP in the last 3 years, this has created a challenge for the Scottish economy. The Fraser of Allander Institute recently warned that Scotland would take longer to recover from the last recession than the UK did from the Great Depression in the 1930s. Fraser of Allander have revised their forecast growth in Scotland from a projected 1% to 0.8% for 2011. Other economists have predicted more optimistic forecasts. Ernst and Young have predicted a growth of 2.2% and Mackay Consultants 1.6%.

Tourism Like most sectors, tourism was affected by the recession. However, recent estimates for 2010 indicate that tourism in the Falkirk area has recovered slightly from a fall the previous year. In 2010, the number of visitors is estimated to be 1% up on 2009 and visitor expenditure is also 1% higher at £76.23 million. There are many difficulties in measuring tourism accurately at local level, but Falkirk appears to compare favourably with Scotland as a whole, which had a 2% fall in visitors in 2010, with expenditure down by 0.8%. Another positive indicator is that, in CACI’s 2011 ranking of retail centres, Falkirk town centre has retained 7th place in Scotland, only beaten by Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and the shopping centres at Braehead and Silverburn.

Teams of school pupils took to the stage at the annual YES (Young Enterprise Scotland) Innovations Award ceremony to reveal their successful forays into the world of commerce. Young Enterprise is an industry/education partnership offering young people aged between 15 and 19 a chance to develop business skills. They form and run their own companies with real products or services, real problems and solutions, and real profits and losses. The companies are supported during the year by their Link teachers and Business Advisors, who come from the local business community and find it a very rewarding experience. The Forth Valley ceremony featured nine teams, determined to show what they had learned during the past few months. The youngsters had sold everything from cupcakes to jewellery, watches to recycled clocks, phone socks to survival kits. They had already taken part in an outdoor trade fair in Falkirk and at a Christmas fair in Glasgow. Larbert High School’s “Embellish” team picked up the awards for Best Use of I.T. and Best Financial Report, but it was Bo’ness Academy who swept the board with their two teams “Equipt” and “Junk.” “Equipt” made survival kits for all aspects of life including sleepovers, festivals and even a kit for yummy mummies! They picked up 7 category awards including Most Innovative Product, Best Display at Glasgow Trade Fair, and Best Company Report. “Equipt” went on to pick up the overall champions’ trophy, with their schoolmates in the “Junk” team coming runners-up – a wonderful double for Bo’ness Academy. Link teacher Caroline Craig and the teams’ Business Advisor Victoria Walsh, director of local chartered accountants, The A9 Partnership Limited, were both delighted at the double success, which reflected the hard work of all the youngsters.

Business support is in the form of free, confidential advice on business start up, support in writing a business plan, loans of up to £5,000 and, in some cases, grants of up to £1,000. A free book-keeping record system is available together with tailored training. PSYBT recognises it is not just funding that is essential for success – free, ongoing advice and support is available for two years after start-up to all businesses through its aftercare programme involving dedicated volunteers who come from all sections of the local business community. Alison Gee, PSYBT’s manager in Forth Valley region says “PSYBT works closely with the enterprise network across Scotland and here in the Falkirk area we work in partnership with Falkirk for Business to ensure any young person wishing to start up or develop their existing business gets access to as much training and assistance as possible to enable them to succeed.” Chris Allen, 24, first approached PSYBT for funding and support in 2007 and now runs the growing Falkirk area franchise of Enjoy-a-Ball - a sports coaching programme aimed at boys and girls between the ages of 3 and 9 years. Chris has successfully grown his business and now has over 190 children every week enjoying his classes at five different local centres. He recently started a new class in Denny with a future one planned for Grangemouth - and he has taken on his first employee. More details about Chris’s business can be found on the PSYBT website at www.psybt.org.uk To find out more about how PSYBT can help you start or develop your business call 01324 483300 or e-mail alison.gee@psybt.org.uk

Entrepreneurs of tomorrow have been flexing their business muscles to show why enterprise has a healthy future in Forth Valley.

If you are 18-25 and dream of having your own business, accessing the necessary funding is not always easy. This is where The Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT) can help. PSYBT was officially launched in 1989 by HRH Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, with the sole aim of helping young people who lacked funding and support to start up and continue in business. Since then PSYBT has helped over 12,000 young people across Scotland turn their business dreams into reality.

The Good Old Days?

by George Stevenson Family Business Solutions

The Falkirk forBusiness Magazine

Issue 2 • September 2011

One sometimes hears those in the Family Business world talking wistfully of the good old days when, apparently, every family business had its “Trusted Advisor” at hand to guide it safely through the maze of family related issues. But is that really true or is it more a case of retrospective rose tinted spectacles?

30

Consider my own experience, or rather lack of it, having been asked in 1979 to leave my career as a marine geophysicist and join my wife’s 3rd generation family business, at the time employing around 150 people (including 4 members of the family), and take over as Managing Director three years later. With no previous exposure to family businesses, either as an employee or a family member, I was completely unaware of the challenges ahead and totally ill prepared to meet them. So any advice, trusted or otherwise, would have been warmly welcomed! Let’s start with the Bank. The business had banked with them since it started and the manager had been there almost from the beginning. Sounds promising in so far as he would have had plenty of time to get to know the family and the business – and perhaps he did. However, thinking of him now reminds me of Harry Carpenter’s memorable interview with Frank Bruno shortly before his first fight with Mike Tyson. Bruno was sounding very confident until Harry remarked that Tyson was invincible. Bruno looked dismayed. “But, if I can’t see him, how can I hit him?” Like Tyson our bank manager was “Invincible”. It would have been nice to have met him even once before his retirement, 8 years after I had started. Trusted advice received – zero.

Legal advice was available from a local two partner firm of solicitors. The senior partner and my father-in-law met several times a week at golf and rotary. They must have talked about something but apparently not the business or the family, as any advice given was only ever in response to a formal, specific instruction, normally to do with property leases. Apart from that, they had drawn up the Company’s Articles of Association when it had changed from a partnership to a limited company in 1958. The fact that these articles remained unchanged for over 40 years despite several iterations of the Companies Act and various issues within the family and the business screaming out for a revision to the articles, says a lot about the lack of proactivity on the legal front! The accountants did try to be proactive by providing a post audit report, but unsurprisingly the content focussed exclusively on ratios and financial trends – simply underlining things that we already knew. The things affecting the business that we didn’t know about or understand – governance, effective boards, managing the family etc - were either outwith their knowledge base or beyond the limits of what they considered their remit. Almost certainly both! So, is the Trusted Advisor from the good old days a myth or was I just unlucky? My experiences would suggest that even when a long standing relationship has existed, advisors have always needed an additional layer of knowledge and skills to respond effectively to the (almost always) unspoken cry for help from the family business. Where families are facing some of the complex issues which arise as their business evolves over the generations, the primary task of the trusted advisor is not necessarily to solve these problems (this may well require input from a specialist family business consultant). It is to:

Trusted Advisor? ‘The key to good tax management is planning ahead’ Personal, Business and Corporate Tax Planning Inheritance and Capital Gains Tax Reviews Tax Return Preparation and Investigations VAT Compliance Reviews Macfarlane Gray House, Castlecraig Business Park, Stirling 01786 451745 Email: hazelb@macfarlanegray.co.uk www.macfarlanegray.co.uk • Identify the issues impacting on the family business system • Articulate these in a way that enables the family to understand how they arise and how to address them • Advise! To do this requires a breadth of knowledge about family business systems and skills in gathering information to help draw out all the issues that would not otherwise be immediately apparent. So, as these are not taught as part of the current professional degree courses, how can they be acquired? Although some of the professional bodies in Scotland are recognising the need to make CPD training available in these areas, in the short term those professional advisors who want to develop skills immediately are seeking help from specialists in the field of Family Business Consulting such as Family Business Solutions Limited (www.familybusinesssolutions. co.uk). Apart from their main business of providing practical help and advice to families in business, FBS run intensive 1 day workshops to provide lawyers, accountants and bankers with the basic knowledge and skills that they need. It may take a generation and fundamental changes to the professional education system, but surely the time will come eventually when our advisors to family businesses will genuinely be able to be described as “Trusted!” For more information on courses for Family Business Advisors, contact George Stevenson at Family Business Solutions, 302 St Vincent Street, Glasgow G2 5RZ Tel 0141 222 2820 Email: gstevenson@familybusinesssolutions.co.uk

Know who you’re going after: many small business owners make the mistake of going after everyone and anyone. Far better to choose a small niche within a big market, and then become the authority in that niche. So ask this question: Who is my ideal client? There are three criteria - A) They know they have a problem {that’s solved by your business} B) They have the means to pay and C) They’re decision makers.

Steal these little known tips to grow your small business Three years ago as a small business owner, a question used to swim around in my head. “How come I have this great product, yet no-one is beating a path to my door?” In truth, I was getting killed by the economy. A friend told me to ‘sit tight and be positive.’ I decided on a more concrete plan of action. I made a massive investment of time and money to learn cutting edge marketing techniques. Today my business is stronger than ever!

The Falkirk forBusiness Magazine

Issue 2 • September 2011

Here are my top ten tips to get you started on the route to faster and easier business growth.

34

Make sure that you can clearly state in one sentence what makes you unique in your market. The following are good examples of how to be different. A) Market leaders – “we’re the number 1” B) Tradition “We’ve been here the longest” C) Product or service promise – “we deliver next day or you don’t pay” D) Local “We know your needs better because we live here too” E) Technical differences – “Our machine is the fastest/uses the least electricity” F) Exclusive, “only we do this”. Build your marketing strategy around your differences and then make sure that your campaigns emphasise and dramatize what makes you unique. Offer a guarantee. We all want to avoid the risk in doing business. Ask “Can we add a guarantee that’s so compelling our competitors will never be able to match it?” Always use the principles of direct response marketing. Meaning, if you place an advertisement make sure that there’s a call to action. Use an ethical bribe e.g. “Call this recorded message, leave your name and we’ll send you a free report on how to avoid your pipes freezing over the winter.” Create value first then pitch your product. The client may not buy now, so attempt to build a relationship for the future. Would you ask someone to marry you on a first date? Have a place on your website where potential customers can get a weekly free tip, or monthly newsletter so that you can first demonstrate your credentials. Use sequences in your marketing campaigns. New customers will not notice you exist until they’ve heard from you for between 5-8 times. So when you plan a marketing sequence make sure that you’ll have a theme and contact the same customers every week for a minimum of two months. At the moment we’re using a cartoon theme for a direct mail campaign. Every week our target market get a letter with a cartoon at the top and each week the cartoon brings out different elements of our customer’s problem. E-mail me at Stuart@vanguardscotland.co.uk for a copy of the letter.

8 9 10

Always use a deadline. When you make an offer have it time bound or limited in volume, e.g. “Offer expires in seven days” or “we only have a hundred at this price.” Work on your website and letter headlines. The best headline is one that creates curiosity. “Five secrets only plumbers know about how to reduce your heating bills” or “The real secret to…” or “Top 2 ways to…..” or “The hidden costs of…”

Stuart Corrigan has a website where you can get a free e-book and audio on small business marketing. But beware! The website is a bit shocking - you can see it here at www.nmtb.co.uk

Use lots of different ways to generate traffic and visitors to your website or business. Here’s what we do: A) Google pay per click B) Google display advertising C) Public Relations D) Facebook business pages E) Blogging F) Twitter G) Article marketing H) Video Marketing I) Search engine optimisation. You need to have a few strategies, just in case some stop working!

Bonus Tip. Always offer a bonus. Business growth has got less to do with attitude and more to do with using a tried and tested system. Thankfully I took the time to learn about small business marketing and was able to turn my business around.

New Investment Fund for Businesses in the East of Scotland Falkirk Council is part of a consortium of ten local authorities in the East of Scotland who have joined together to create The East of Scotland Investment Fund (ESIF). The Fund offers loans of up to £50,000 to new and growing, small and medium sized businesses. It is modelled on the successful West of Scotland Loan Fund which has earned an outstanding reputation for assisting businesses over the last 15 years, when other conventional sources of funding have not been able to fully fund projects. The aim of ESIF is to ensure that good, commercially viable proposals do not fail from a lack of access to finance. Convener of Economic Strategy and Development for Falkirk Council, Adrian Mahoney said: “Falkirk Council is aware of the limited finance available to businesses at this present time and joined in the creation of ESIF to try and increase the supply of loan finance to encourage and support the creation,

development and growth of businesses within Falkirk area. Working together with the consortia of local authorities we were delighted to receive match funding through European funding and additional support from the Royal Bank of Scotland to create the fund.” ESIF as a public sector owned fund can provide up to 50% of the funding package required to help start up and grow your business. Interest rates are fixed, currently at 6%, for the duration of the loan with the maximum repayment period being 5 years. Consideration will be given for ‘capital repayment' holidays on a case by case basis. With a fund value of £5m the East of Scotland Investment Fund will be able to support the creation of 1,000 new jobs throughout the east of Scotland during the next five years. For further information and to download an application form please see www.eastscotinvest.co.uk or contact John Judge at Falkirk For Business on 01324 665500.

iPad Winner Stuart Clark of Eclipse Bathrooms and Kitchens had a special reason to be delighted with his recent visit to the Falkirk Business Exhibition. Entering a prize draw run by chartered accountants Martin Robertson Associates Ltd, Stuart’s name was first out of the hat (or bucket) to win a fabulous iPad. On hearing the news, Stuart’s first comment was unprintable, but he calmed down enough to say “That’s brilliant! I had been looking at buying one. It was definitely worth coming to the Exhibition.” Martin Robertson, Managing Director, said: “We wanted a good prize to reflect the high quality of service we offer our customers, and we are delighted that Stuart is so happy to have won. It just shows that it pays to network!”

The Bo’ness Speed Hill Climb 2011 The 4th annual Hill Climb will take place on the Kinneil Estate on September 10th and 11th, and promises to be even bigger than last year when 10,000 spectators packed in to watch the action. First run back in 1934, the event attracted international competition up until 1966 when the sale of some of the ground spelled the end to racing competition on the estate. However a group of enthusiasts, with the support and encouragement of Falkirk Council, revived the event in 2007 and it continues to go from strength to strength. This year as well as the speed climb itself, there will a Classic Car and Motor Cycle Show with over 300 vehicles, pipe bands, steam trains and an overhead flypast. Something for everyone then! The hill climb needs local businesses to get involved as much as possible, and there are sponsorship opportunities for various aspects of the two day event.

After a short break he will forge new links with Falkirk for Business as an independent consultant, and will be delivering some of our evening courses during the coming months. All of his colleagues would like to thank him for the work he has put into first FEAT and then Falkirk for Business, and we wish him well in his new endeavours!
