WELCOME to Fife Business Matters Welcome to the latest edition of Fife Business Matters. As we say goodbye to 2012 and look forward to what 2013 has in store, the theme of this issue is aptly that of celebration. While we cannot deny the past year has brought challenges, it has also brought opportunities and successes for businesses large and small in Fife. Some of these success stories were honoured at the recent Fife Business Awards which was a fantastic event and one you can read more about in the coming pages of Fife Business Matters. This year we consulted with local businesses through a programme of business breakfast seminars to identify the issues and challenges they face. The feedback we received from these events will be invaluable in helping us develop our new Fife Economic Strategy. The strategy, which is being jointly developed by Fife Council and the Fife Economy Partnership, will set the future direction for growing the Fife economy and creating jobs to 2020. In this issue we look at a number of businesses who are doing fantastic work in the region from young start-up companies through to long-established large-scale operations which employ upwards of 100 people. Each of the companies featured and the many hundreds succeeding throughout Fife can celebrate in the knowledge that they are the lifeblood of this economy and that they play an important role in keeping our economy secure. I hope you enjoy this issue of Fife Business Matters and I wish you all the best for 2013.

EXCELLENCE RECOGNISED AT FIFE BUSINESS AWARDS It was a night for celebrating the cream of the crop at the 2012 Fife Business Awards, which saw nine local companies beat off stiff competition to be crowned a winner. Over 230 guests attended the glittering ceremony at the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes which was hosted by comedian Fred MacAulay. Twenty five organisations across the region were hoping to win one of the illustrious honours, including the Most Enterprising Start-up Company award that went to St Andrews-based restaurant The Adamson. Situated in South Street, The Adamson, which was named after local physician Dr John Adamson who was responsible for producing the first calotype portrait in Scotland in 1841, was set up by co-founders Julie Lewis and Graham Dalton in 2012. Dedicated to creating a memorable and enjoyable dining experience, achieving excellence using locally-sourced produce and

producing the highest standards of service enabled the bar and brasserie to win the award. Julie, who has 21 years’ experience working in the hospitality industry, said: “We’re delighted to have been named the Most Enterprising Start-up Company. We’ve only been in business for less than 12 months and to win the award is a fantastic achievement for the whole team. “Vital to our success is our staff and the importance of training, and each member of the team is equally proud of the business and its success.” Also basking in glory is the St Andrews Golf Experience which picked up the Best Tourism award. Offering golf holidays, tours, short breaks and golf lessons, the team of experts specialise in organising golf tours in St Andrews and also other parts of Scotland for enthusiasts from all over the world.
Through its informative website, visitors can view its large and varied selection of golf tour packages, golf lessons programme at the St Andrews Golf Academy, golf courses and hotels across the country and all the necessary details required for a successful golfing experience. It was also a reason for celebration for Kirkcaldy-based hair salon Migele Experience which won the Excellence in Customer Services award. Founded by Dom Migele who opened his first salon in 1972, the company’s philosophy is to ensure that its salon guests, colleagues and community benefit from the passion, the expertise and the team spirit that is presented to every client. In addition, the hairstylists create looks designed to work for their clients’ face shape, features and lifestyle as well as creating new textures and shapes full of life and movement.
The Best Performing Business awards (over 50 employees and under 50 employees) went to Itasco Precision Ltd and McDonald Engineers respectively. Glenrothes-based Itasco Precision Ltd is a sub-contract engineering company that provides complete turnkey solutions to meet the needs of the global manufacturing industry. Employing more than 60 people, the company project manages the entire manufacturing process from initial receipt of raw material, through the various stages of precision machining, weld cladding, NDT and heat treatment.
Alan Russell, Chief Executive of the Fife Chamber of Commerce, who orgnaised the Awards on behalf of the Fife Economy Partnership, said: “It is always really heartening when the entries come in and we hear about the many achievements of businesses in Fife. “It is tremendous to see the range of businesses involved across a wide variety of sectors and geographies across the region. It’s really quite surprising in many ways, but it clearly demonstrates Fife is a place where many different businesses can thrive.” He added: “We had over 50 applications across the range of categories this year and without exception they have demonstrated that businesses are performing exceptionally well across Fife. The category winners are ‘best in class’ and deserve their accolade. “We celebrate their success in the hope they will inspire others to start and grow successful businesses in the Kingdom.” The Success Through Sustainability award was presented to ScotAsh – the UK market leaders in quality controlled, sustainable construction products manufactured using recycled pulverised fuel ash (PFA). Established in 1999, ScotAsh supplies hundreds of thousands of tonnes of technologically advanced products to construction specialists nationally and globally. Manufactured from power station ash, its PFA products provide a high quality and sustainable alternative to primary aggregates, cement and grouts.
Aware of the implications of poor quality and late deliveries, it is committed to working closely with its customers to provide them with access to a highly disciplined infrastructure. And strict environmental controls and operating procedures are employed to guarantee quality and on time delivery. McDonald Engineers, manufacturers of hot water systems for renewable energy sources, is regularly called upon by architects, engineers, specifiers and installers to ensure the most effective and efficient cylinder is delivered. Managing director Bill Stewart and his sales director brother Jamie, the siblings have been determined to stick by the principles – quality, service and value for money – established by the company over 80 years ago. The Best Business & Education Partnership was presented to Fife Fabrications (FiFab). Celebrating its 40th year in business, the company launched in 1972 and has gone on to become one of the UK’s most advanced manufacturers of precision sheet-metalwork, electro-mechanical assemblies and precision machined components. John Penman, Sales and Marketing Director, said: “To win the award is a fantastic achievement. Staff development and training is a key part of the company’s success, which is reflected in the fact that we have many long-serving employees, including managing director Archie Smith who has been with the FiFab since the beginning. We also believe apprentices are vital to a company’s success which is why we continue to invest in them.”

BUSINESS FUNDING CAN BE HEAVEN SENT In the first of a new series on business financing, Angus McGuire of business lawyers Young & Partners of Dunfermline gives an overview on alternative forms of funding.
“Business finance is a critical issue for small and medium enterprises. Particularly in the current economic climate when there is little or no growth in the economy and bank funding is limited, business angels, crowdfunding and grants/loan funding are important to ensure ideas, ambitions and local commerce continue to flourish. “There are various different sources of funding and the ones which are suitable will depend on the type of business you run, the amount you are looking for and what else is offered in addition to money, such as mentoring or support. These sources of finance come with different pros and cons so businesses need to consider these carefully before entering into agreements.”
8
Business Angels:
Grant/Loan Funding
These are wealthy individuals who invest their own funds into early stage high growth businesses, often as part of a syndicate. This investment often goes beyond money – they can provide contacts, business skills and mentoring.
There are a number of government and local authority bodies which offer grants or loans depending on your size, location and business type - such as Business Gateway Fife, Scottish Enterprise and the Cultural Enterprise Office. Also, available is the recently created East of Scotland Investment Fund, led by Fife Council, where loans of up to £50,000 are available.
Business angel financing is increasingly important in the Scottish economy and according to LINC, the national association of business angels in Scotland, £89.2m was invested by its members between 2007 and 2011. Financing can vary from thousands to hundreds of thousands of pounds and many Fife companies have used this model from Optos, to Ambicare and Sonis Europe. In Scotland, there is also the availability of matched funding from Scottish Enterprise from one of three equity funds: Scottish Seed Fund, Scottish Co-Investment Fund and Scottish Venture Fund where it matches the amount of the private funds raised. There is also matched funding available from the East of Scotland Investment Fund which is a local authority consortium working together to support new and growing businesses in the region. Regulatory issues under the Financial Services and Markets Act have been amended to make it easier for business angels to avoid strict restrictions. In return for the risks involved in investing, angels benefit from generous tax reliefs. The local angel syndicate is Kapital Ventures based in Kinross.
Crowdfunding In recent years, ‘crowdfunding’ has grown in popularity on the internet for those looking for between a few hundred and few thousand pounds. It is particularly popular with creative industries businesses where there is an existing fan base. Knowing your audience, exploiting contacts and using social media are important in attracting this funding. The funding can be rewards based, equity or peer to peer. Rewards is the most common as it is not regulated by the Financial Services and Markets Act. The local crowdfunding site is Bloom VC based in Dundee. YOUNG PEOPLE’S BUSINESS SUCCESS Over 30 young businesses have been set up this year thanks to funding from The Princes Trust Youth Business Scotland, which is co-located with Business Gateway Fife. These businesses, which showcase a diverse range of skills, talents and entrepreneurial spirit of young Fifers, are recognised each year at the youth charity’s annual awards ceremony. This year, two businesses established in 2010 and now thriving were shortlisted to be named Fife’s top young business – TLC Body Repair and BH Plumbing and Heating Thomas Leitch of TLC Body Repair won the award. Fiona Turnbull of PTYBS said: “We have so many fantastic entrepreneurial success stories to choose from in Fife and both the young men shortlisted have proven to have great businesses that are continuing to flourish. Congratulations to them both and I am confident their stories can go on and inspire other young people with a business idea.” Almost 85% of the businesses supported by PTYBS are still trading a year after set up, with almost 70% lasting beyond three years. Over a third of those supported has been unemployed and every pound of PTYBS support creates a return of 96p.

STORIES AWARDED Thomas Leitch of TLC Body Repair
Bill Hawthorne of BH Plumbing and Heating
Rosyth body shop mechanic Thomas Leitch was named Fife’s top young entrepreneur by The Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland (PTYBS).
Runner-up Bill Hawthorne also set up his business in May 2010. He said:
Thomas, 28, established TLC Body Repairs in 2010. He has worked repairing cars from the age of 16 and after three years working for a national mobile body repair company decided to go it alone. Thomas said: “When I set up the business it was slightly scary but I was confident I could do my job well having been working with cars for almost 10 years and I was confident there was definitely work there so it was also quite exciting. “I’m almost three years into the business now and I once heard that a lot of small businesses might not make it to this point so the fact the business continues to grow gives me a lot of confidence that I can look to the future.” In the past three years, he has established a strong client base and in 2013 hopes to employ someone to help him expand the business. Thomas’ advisor at PTYBS convinced him to go for the award and he is delighted to have been named as Fife’s top young entrepreneur. He added: “Winning the award was unexpected but I was really chuffed.”
“The funny thing about being down to the final two with Thomas is we both went to the PTYBS office on the same day to talk to advisors about our ideas to set up on our own and then we meet again just over two years later like this – it’s a real coincidence and a happy one. I’m glad we’ve both realised our business dreams and congratulations to him for winning the award. I was delighted to be even considered for shortlisting as I know there are lots of fantastic young businesses in Fife.” Bill, 25, of Burntisland, completed his apprenticeship with a firm in Edinburgh who renovated homes in the New Town. However, Bill was keen to keep his work on the Fife side of the bridge and knew his connections in his hometown and surrounding area would give him a good start. He said: “It was scary starting up on my own at a young age but exciting as well. I didn’t have any commitments, nothing really to lose, so I knew it was the perfect time. “I’ve got a great support network and I’ve started building up a good customer base so things are really going from strength to strength and for that I am absolutely delighted as I love what I do.” Bill had a 14% increase in turnover between his first and second year in business and also employs an apprentice. He hopes to keep the business busy and eventually be able to employ more plumbers so he can spend more time on business management.
HOUSING INNOVATION SHOWCASE An innovative housing project was awarded a Green Apple Award at a ceremony held at Edinburgh Castle. The partnership project between Kingdom Housing Association and Fife Council have used 10 modern methods of construction to build 27 new homes for social rent. Bill Banks, Depute Chief Executive of Kingdom Housing Association, said: “The incentive and overarching objective of the project was to demonstrate how modern methods of construction could be mainstreamed across larger affordable housing programmes, to deliver construction, energy efficiency, wider role and economic benefits.” The project incorporates renewable technologies and will be monitored and evaluated over a twoyear period.
Thomson Cooper accountancy win Dunfermline-based accountants Thomson Cooper beat of stiff competition from global accountancy firm KPMG to win the Community Award for its Business Development Programme and extensive charity work at the British Accountancy Awards 2012. Through its Business Development Programme, the firm assisted over 190 organisations to enhance their knowledge and improve their skills through a series of training opportunities, seminars and a user group. And as part of UNICEF’s WaterAid Big Dig Appeal, Thomson Cooper’s donation purchased 10 water kits for families in rural Malawi. The firm also organised West Fife’s Young Entrepreneur Award 2012 which encourages young people to start their own business. Thomson Cooper’s Managing Partner David Walker, said: “We are immensely proud to be recognised as a leader in our field, especially at a national level against one of the big four global firms. These awards have created a benchmark against which all accountancy firms aspire to and we are deeply honoured to have won our category in the first year we have entered.”

Building on achievement to bring further success in 2013
C
ouncillor Kay Carrington, Fife Council’s, executive member for Business, Enterprise, Economy & Planning reflects on 2012: We can look back on 2012 as one of the most successful years in recent times for inward investment and business development in Fife. Around 1000 jobs were created by the private sector through support from the Invest in Fife team. This was a major feat in the face of the challenges of the current economic climate. Some highlights include the Korean giant Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced it’s to base its first European offshore wind project in Fife in a project worth up to £100m and expected to create 500 jobs. Global Drinks Giant Diageo continues to show its massive commitment to Fife by investing £5m at its Banbeath site to develop a new ‘luxury products’ bottling plant which is expected to create another 30 permanent jobs.
12
Since then the company has acquired Begg Farm near Kirkcaldy to create their largest bonded warehouse in Europe with another £200m of investment, making the Fife complex its biggest in Scotland. Along in Rosyth, the former Lexmark factory has had new life breathed into it with Polish salmon company Meridian Salmon setting up its headquarters and salmon processing facility there and creating up to 400 jobs. A long established company in Fife, Quaker Oats have invested over £14m on a new factory which will lead to another 30 jobs. This not only shows how proactive our teams are but how they show dedication and commitment to working closely with new and existing businesses. We are committed to continue to work with our partners in the Fife Economy Partnership over the coming year to exploit all avenues and opportunities for development and growth of our new and existing businesses. I am extremely positive about the year ahead as ‘Fife Means Business’.
Dunfermline-based eCom Scotland has plenty to celebrate as it enters 2013.
eCom’s commitment to research and development paved way for growth
E
stablished 16 years ago eCom Scotland has secured new office space at Dickson Street expanding into the adjacent offices. Growth throughout 2012 has been a major focus and this is reflected in both their client base and product offering. In tandem with an increased market share eCom hopes to crack a milestone turnover figure of £1m for the first time. Wendy Edie, Managing Director of eCom Scotland, prides the eLearning company’s recent fortunes to a commitment and investment in research and development during the economic downturn. She said: “We knew we had to go for growth and in an industry such as ours, constantly innovating your offering is essential. With the support from Scottish Enterprise, we had the opportunity to really focus on research and development and that is now paying dividends.” eCom Scotland has also received support in the form of a Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) Award and a loan of £50,000 from the East of Scotland Investment Fund (ESIF) administered by Business Gateway Fife. These cash injections helped it secure new premises where the company can grow its headcount by a further 20 in the next three years.
Survey reveals SMEs keen to use other sources of funding A snapshot survey of SMEs by East of Scotland Investment Fund (ESIF) has shown that despite a more positive view of business performance two-thirds of businesses have not secured bank funding this year. Some businesses opted not to approach the banks as they did not want to put their houses up for security but many who did were refused funding for a variety of credit, cost and bank policy reasons. ESIF was launched a year ago and created and led by Fife Council, Economic Development is a consortium of local authorities with additional support from the European Regional Development Fund and Royal Bank of Scotland. So far it has assisted 34 companies with loans totalling £1194.5m and safeguarded or retained more than 300 jobs. Loans of up to £50,000 with interest rates currently fixed at 6% and a maximum repayment term of five years are available. These can be used towards working capital or the purchase of equipment, plant or business property. George Sneddon, Chair of the East of Scotland Investment Fund, said: “Accessing affordable new finance remains a challenge for some small SMEs which is why initiatives like this are so important. Investment is vital to safeguard and create jobs, support businesses through this particularly difficult period and ensure that local economies benefit from successful businesses.” For more information visit www.eastscotinvest.co.uk or telephone Business Gateway Fife on 01592 858333

Damian Kilby with one of his products
GOLFING AID HELPS SOFTEN THE GAME FOR HARDENED WINTER GOLFERS As the saying goes, it never rains on the golf course. With Scottish golfers hardened to adverse weather conditions, a new winter golfing aid is proving a hit with players nationwide.
Damian Kilby has formed a company called divotEnd which sells the smart winter rules mat Rocket Launcher. Damian, with his design engineer brother Glenn, spent 18 months developing the product which has been approved by the R&A. The plastic arched golfing aid, with a hole for a thick tee type holder, is for use when the ground is too hard for traditional tees or when tees are not allowed pre-major tournaments. It was invented to replace golf mats.
divotEnd will produce thousands of the Rocket Launchers this season. The products are available in a few pro shops, as well as online. Damian is hoping to increase its presence in stores and has already been overwhelmed from the response by Scottish golfers. He added: “I very much value the advice and support given by Business Gateway, and the financial assistance from Fife Council which enabled divotEND to exhibit at two major golf trade shows, one in Edinburgh and one Harrogate.
Registered in Kirkcaldy with a base in Dalgety Bay, and with all of the production process happening in Scotland, Damian thinks it’s important it is a truly Scottish product. He said:
“At the Scottish Golf Show we won the best new product award and sold 600 at that show alone. If I go into a clubhouse and place a few on the table, instantly people are coming over interested and wanting to have a go and when they do they tend to love the idea.
“Keeping our business local is an important part of what we are offering as a young company, supporting the local supply chain. This is a product inspired by the tough winter grounds of Scotland so it’s right we keep the knock-on economic benefits local.”
“The more I hear stories of the lengths people go to golf in the winter, the more I am assured there is a market here. One gentleman told me his friends took screwdrivers and another an electric drill to get their tees in the ground.”

Most advertising shouts out a message in the hope that someone’s interested. Direct marketing, on the other hand, is all about having a conversation with your customer. It’s more personal. We target specific people with specific offers. We use great creative to break the ice. And we know what to say to get people to respond. Which is why it works. InVite Business Networking
A NEW ERA FOR TAYPORT’S SCOTT & FYFE Tayport stalwart Scott & Fyfe has been in business for almost 150 years. Originally a traditional manufacturer of jute products, the family-owned business diversified over the years and expanded into new areas as far afield as China and Australia. Now the company, under the direction of Chief Executive John Lupton is refocusing its efforts closer to home and renewing its commitment to its Tayport workforce. The company has recently announced its transition to an employee-owned business. Each of the around 100 employees working at the industrial textile manufacturer will own a share of the business, helping safeguard its future in, and for, the Tayport community. Over a quarter of Scott & Fyfe’s staff have been with the company more than 25 years, with around 30% between one and eight years highlighting a mix of experience and new ideas. As an indicator of the level of engagement within the workforce, in a recent survey 94% said they would be willing to give extra effort for the company to succeed and 90% felt they contributed to the company’s success.
InVite Business Networking, launched in June, is going from strength to strength with over 30 businesses attending its events. It has launched a ‘Soap Box’ for businesses to tell their stories. For more information www. facebook.com/Invbiznet.

This model of ownership displays and rewards a two-way commitment.” A physical mark of this new era for Scott & Fyfe is the transformation of its working areas into one consolidated site on Links Road, Tayport, resulting in a more diverse and innovative working environment. John added: “This significant redevelopment is vital in the delivery of our ambitious plans for the development of a truly innovative, employee owned enterprise.”

ROAD SAFETY TECHNOLOGY DEVICE FROM FIFEX FifeX, a product design company that has been helped by Business Gateway Fife, designed The Road Safety Reaction Timer in collaboration with the Road Safety team at Renfrewshire Council and the Scottish Schools Equipment Research Centre (SSERC) in Dunfermline. Now, thanks to a partnership with Transport Scotland, every school and road safety team in Scotland has access to the company’s unique ‘plug ‘n’ play’ device, which aims to highlight reaction time and thinking and braking distance in an interactive way. Craig Harvey, Managing Director at FifeX, said: “The device is innovative and has attracted a lot of attention from road safety teams throughout the UK. Anecdotal evidence shows users are gaining a more comprehensive understanding of road safety as a result of the device which challenges people’s thinking in an interactive way.”
SALES MAP HELPS MAP SALES FOR SMEs SalesMap, a web based sales process application with coaching and mentoring support, was developed by Bruce Hamilton to help companies become more disciplined and successful at selling. Bruce said: “I’ve worked for national and international companies who have money to throw at training their sales teams but for SMEs the sales department is one of the first to have its budget cut when times get tough and sending an employee out into the field without training or a support network will ultimately cost a company more as that person is unlikely to reach their targets.“ SaleMap provides users with a structured selling process to follow, complete with a step-by-step guide, online mentoring, coaching and sales tips plus tried and tested selling techniques. Company owners can also monitor performance, identify sales trends and make informed forecasts. Bruce received help from Business Gateway Fife towards technical expertise for his website under the Expert Help scheme. 19

FBM MEETS... MARK GOLDSMITH, GENERAL MANAGER AT PFAUDLER BALFOUR
Mark Goldsmith moved to Fife from his native Mansfield 12 years ago and instantly fell in love with the region as a place to live and do business. He is General Manager of Pfaudler Balfour in Leven, managing a workforce of around 150. Tell us a bit about your background: I have worked here for 12 years. Prior to that, I worked in the coal mining industry having joined straight from school at 16. That industry tailed off so I moved into manufacturing and worked at a company called Bridgeport Machine Tools and within two years I was Plant Manager which was great. I moved to Fife in 2000 to join Pfaudler Balfour and was promoted to the site’s General Manager in 2004. I have three children and live in a farm house near Crail. I have a 5kW wind turbine on my land and am very interested in renewable energy from both business and personal perspectives. Pfaudler Balfour is a well-known and long-standing business in Leven. Tell us about its history and future: Pfaudler Balfour is a world leader in the design and manufacture of glassed steel vessels, evaporators and mixing systems for the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors under the Pfaudler brand and Polymer lined equipment under the Edlon brand. The equipment is highly corrosion resistant and is used by customers to make, use or store dangerous chemicals. We deal with some of the world’s largest companies and export our products throughout the globe. The site has been here since 1809 and we employ around 250 people in the UK, mostly in manufacturing, engineering and mechanical roles. As someone who has moved to Fife, what do you see as the area’s strengths in terms of a business destination? Fife is a fantastic place to live. When people are one of your most important assets, having a happy workforce that live in the area that supports an excellent life style and has no issues such as lengthy commutes, that can really make the difference. This is a great place, with a lot of support for industry and vision to develop with a diverse range of businesses. I am a member of the Fife Economy Partnership and we know there is still work to be done to promote to the rest of the world that Fife really is the place to do business. I really do believe that is the case and definitely class myself as a true Fifer now. 21
BEST PRACTICE VISITS
L-R Ronnie Soutar (University of Edinburgh), Dr Richard Ssuna (Lilongwe SPCA), Gordon Brown MP, Adam Tjolle (Inglis Vets).
PIONEERING VETERINARY PRACTICE IN COWDENBEATH Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown officially opened a pioneering new veterinary practice in Fife, describing it as offering a “brilliantly conceived service”. The MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the opening which is the result of a ground-breaking association with one of the world’s top veterinary schools. Inglis Veterinary Hospital, based in Dunfermline, set up the new ‘Inglis – Care&Save’ surgery at High Street, Cowdenbeath, to provide discounted pet care while at the same time offering quality training facilities for veterinary students. At the new surgery, pet owners can access reduced-rate services while students from Edinburgh University’s Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies – traditionally known as ‘the Dick Vet’ – gain hands-on experience of work in a modern practice. Student-led consultations are carried out under expert supervision by Inglis staff, with clients benefiting from discounts of up to 50 per cent. The surgery will host all Dick Vets’ 150 final-year students in small groups over the course of a year Vet Adam Tjolle, Managing Director of Inglis, said: “The Dick Vet is internationally famous for producing the best veterinary surgeons in the world. “By booking a student-led discounted consultation, clients will be able to play their part in helping the vets of tomorrow to hone their skills and gain valuable surgery experience. “Our own fully-qualified veterinary surgeons will guide and authorise every treatment, so there will be no compromising with the quality of care provided.” A special guest at the ‘Inglis – Care&Save’ opening ceremony was Richard Ssuna, from Malawi, who formalised a twinning arrangement with Inglis. In May 2012, Adam and three colleagues went to the practice Richard runs, Lilongwe SPCA, in the Malawian capital, to install a range of veterinary equipment, some of which was provided by Inglis and some by the RSPCA, and to train staff and volunteers in its use. Inglis is one of the largest practices of its kind in the country and is one of only eight accredited veterinary hospitals in Scotland. As well as its 24-hour hospital in Dunfermline and the new facility in Cowdenbeath, Inglis has a branch and shop in Inverkeithing.

FIFE BUSINESS WEEKS DRAWS SUPPORT FROM BUSINESSES
Dr Ewan Chirnside and presenters from St Andrews University along with FEP Member, Mark Goldsmith from Pfaudler Balfour.
Over 400 business people attended Fife Business Week (6-15 Nov 2012). Now in its third year, the event attracted wide support from local businesses and partner organisations through a week-long series of events, workshops, seminars and conferences throughout the region. Hosted by Fife Economy Partnership, the aim of the initiative was to help Fife businesses learn to succeed, and enable the local economy to continue to flourish over the coming year. Chris Parr, chairman of the Fife Economy Partnership, said Fife Business Week supported by Fife Council Economic Development’ is now an established date in the business calendar. He added: “I am delighted that around 400 business people got involved, and I must thank all the organisations who ran various events, workshops, seminars and conferences. “Taking time away from business to explore new ideas, learn new skills or develop new networks can be a challenge nowadays, but
24
creating a special week to focus on these activities as vital business development skills seems to have done the trick.” Dunfermline played host to eight events during Fife Business Week. Sessions on profit improvement, DIY marketing, lean management, staying focused on business goals, ISO 9001 and social media, were run by Condies Chartered Accountants, the Liberty Business Centre, Scottish Quality Management Centre, Business Gateway Fife, and the Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service with Fife Council. In East Fife, Methil hosted a “Cash for Carbon” workshop in the town’s Hydrogen Office to discover how a new programme has already identified cost savings of £1.2 million. Aimed at SMEs, attendees met staff from Carbon Trust Scotland and Green Business Fife to hear more about how they can get advice and support. Dr Ewan Chirnside, Director of the Knowledge Transfer Centre at the University of St Andrews, and his team of academics from the university showcased the range of research undertaken in high-tech enterprise, technologies in medicine and life sciences.’ Jointly hosted by the University of St Andrews Fife Council Economic Development, Dr Chirnside said:
“We have a wide range of expertise and a strong track record of working with businesses to help them develop new products and services and a competitive market position. The presentations at the event demonstrated the scope of work we can undertake and the significant expertise here in Fife.” Two of Fife’s prominent businesses, Morton of Pitmilly and D&G Autocare, shared their experiences of overcoming barriers to find success. Morton of Pitmilly is an award-winning tourism business offering luxury selfcatering accommodation. The company has constantly innovated to retain regular visitors and attract new ones, offering additional facilities like a swimming pool, gym, wifi and high quality frozen meals from COOK food. It has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor this year. D&G Autocare has garages throughout Fife and central Scotland to provide customers with competitive deals on MOTs, tyres, exhausts, brakes, servicing, suspensions, clutches and garage repairs, all under one roof. Despite a high profile court case with the fashion giants Dolce and Gabbana – also sometimes known as D&G – the company came out on top.
news in brief
New indoor market for Cupar Cupar Indoor Market has opened in the town’s Front Lebanon. Open seven days a week, the market attracts a range of local businesses. Havelock narrows pre-tax losses
Ann Camus, manager of the Fife Tourism Partnership and John Parker chair of the Fife Tourism Partnership.
George Sneddon, Interim Operations Manager at Business Gateway Fife, said: “Hearing first-hand how businesses have overcome barriers to find success is always inspiring for other companies. Both of our speakers from Morton of Pitmilly and D&G Autocare had very interesting stories to tell and the importance of excellent customer service shone through.” Fife tourism was a topical theme with around 30 tourism businesses attending the launch of the Destination Fife website, set up to attract more business tourism such as conferences and major events to the region. The Open Day event at Balgeddie House Hotel also included advisers from the Fife Tourism Partnership explaining how they can help businesses. Along with representatives from Business Gateway, social media experts talked about dealing with twitter, facebook and the all-important Trip Advisor and businesses met the Local Tourism Associations. Tourism is a major player in the Fife economy and a recent survey shows that 77% of local businesses are adopting new ways to retain and attract visitors from all over the world.
Chair of the Fife Tourism Partnership which represents local tourism operators, John Parker of Morton of Pitmilly, said: “Tourism is a major part of the Fife economy and it was great to have this event during Fife Business Week. Our recent tourism survey gives us a clear picture of some challenges faced by tourism businesses in Fife. “More positively, however, the findings also showed how popular Fife is with visitors from overseas with guests coming from Europe, Scandanavia, North America, Australia and Japan with 26% reporting an increase in repeat custom this year.” Councillor Kay Carrington, Fife Council’s Executive Member for Business, Enterprise, Economy and Planning, said: “Fife Business Week highlights the many advantages Fife offers for businesses – high calibre staff, excellent infrastructure links and acknowledged centres of excellence in many sectors. This year’s programme of events proved popular and stimulated discussion, sharing of ideas and best practice as well as opening up networks and business opportunities.”
Dalgety Bay-based shop fitting and educational interiors group Havelock’s pre-tax losses narrowed in the first half of 2012 as turnover increased by 20%. The company, which employs 500 people in the area, posted a pretax loss of £1.5m – compared to a £2.5m loss for the same period in 2011.
Wemyss Malts’ new product Wemyss Malts has launched a new 15-year-old Scotch called Lord Elcho. The whisky is named after its founder’s 18th century ancestor who was a supporter of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Glenrothes based Engineering Company Itasco Precision Ltd picked up the Best Performing Business Award (over 50 employees) at the Fife Business Awards. Reflecting on the success and growth of the company over the last seven years both acknowledged “The introduction of state of the art Weld Cladding Facilities enabled the company to stand out from other small to medium engineering firms giving them a strong competitive edge. Turnover has grown steadily year on year from £1M in year one to exceeding the £6.1M set for this year.” Company Directors Russell Davies and Jim Mullen, said: “We were delighted to pick up this award. It certainly means a lot to everyone within the company. It’s also good for manufacturing in Fife to see so many local engineering companies winning. Out of all the awards Itasco have received over the last seven years, and there have been several now, this particular one gives us most satisfaction. It was very much a team effort where every Itasco employee contributed to our success. We also wish to acknowledge the significant contribution made by all our customers and vendors, without whom, the achievement of this award would not have been possible”.
