to Fife Business Matters Welcome to the latest edition of Fife Business Matters. As we head into summer and we look back on the first half of the year, it is clear that Fife has much to be proud of. In this edition, we focus on Fife’s thriving energy sector, which, in recent months has received a number of multi-million pound contracts generating massive investment and expansion plans and the development of further apprenticeship opportunities. While the oil and gas industry continues to bring investment, the renewable energy sector is also blossoming. The official launch of the Fife Renewables Innovation Centre is a noteworthy milestone for the region and a facility we are exceptionally proud of, adding to the offering at the Fife Energy Park which continues to attract leading companies in the field. A strong delegation of Fife businesses have just returned from All-Energy 2013, the UK’s largest renewable conference and exhibition held each year in Aberdeen. It was successful for the thirteen Fife companies involved and brought new business leads which will further boost the sector. Also in this issue we look at a variety of businesses ranging from those in the start-up stage which have received initial funding, to those long-established largescale operations, which continue to excel and expand in the region. Each one of these companies plays a vital role in contributing and driving the local economy. And finally, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Jim Trail, former Managing Director of Raytheon, one of Fife’s long-established companies, on his retirement. Having worked for the company for over 41 years, he deserves a well-earned rest! From all of us at the Fife Economy Partnership we wish him a long and very happy retirement. I hope you enjoy this issue of Fife Business Matters. Chris Parr, Chairman, Fife Economy Partnership

Fife’s energy sector goes from strength to strength

4

Fife’s energy sector has received a significant boost from investment totalling over £280 million. This investment will see a number of Fife’s leading manufacturing companies, undergo extensive expansion plans. This not only reinforces the strength of Fife’s energy sector, but has created a real sense of optimism about the strength of the region’s economy. Fife’s resilient history in the energy sector has been well documented over the years, dating back to the early 1900s when large marine engineering started at Rosyth Naval Dockyard. Today, operations at Rosyth are still going strong with Babcock confirming a £30 million contract to deliver 74 subsea structures for BP’s Schiehallion and Loyal fields, with the creation of more than 100 jobs. Along the coast at Fife Energy Park, BiFab has started work on the construction of platform jackets for the Cygnus gas field, a £47 million contract which will create 100 jobs and 15 apprenticeships across its four yards. BiFab is also celebrating its biggest order to date. The £140 million deal to create structures for Premier Oil, developers of the new Solan Field off the west coast of Shetland, includes the procurement and construction of a 3,500 tonnes Topside and a 8,000 tonnes Jacket, some of the largest structures to be produced at the site since the 1990’s.

Meanwhile, Score (Europe) Ltd, is to establish a new facility in Glenrothes to store, test and distribute valves. Against competition from other European locations, Invest in Fife secured the £1.5 million project, which hopes to create 30 jobs over the next five years. Also expanding its operations is Parsons Peebles, following its acquisition by Clyde Blowers Capital. The growth plan, supported by a £50 million investment will, in the short-term, see the company double its workforce to develop a new range of high-tech machinery. Fife must also be proud and buoyed by developments in the renewable energy sector where it continues to drive growth. The official launch of the Fife Renewables Innovation Centre (FRIC) in April was a significant milestone. Creating an exceptional environment, in an enviable location on the east coast of Scotland for businesses to develop, it’s not surprising that the facility has exceeded initial occupier targets, reinforcing its integral role within the Energy Park Fife, which continues to attract leading players. Samsung Heavy Industries is to base its first European wind project on the site. The project which has secured £6 million from Scottish Enterprise has been granted Scottish Government consent for a prototype 7MW offshore wind turbine which if viable, could create 500 jobs. To complement these world-class facilities, Fife boasts a world-class workforce. Close relationships between businesses and educational facilities to develop and deliver relevant, training ensures a highly-skilled workforce. All of this combines to showcase a region with a vibrant and exciting future in the energy sector. Its continued determination to attract investment, to invest in the best facilities and its highlyskilled workforce, will ensure Fife creates a world-leading energy hub.

Score expands to Glenrothes Score (Europe) Ltd, which provides sophisticated valves for industry, started its Fife connection in 1984 when it established its Cowdenbeath operation. The new site in Glenrothes was chosen with support from Invest in Fife. Jointly the organisations identified a suitable location, with future development potential, funding streams and partnered with Opportunities Fife to establish apprenticeships and local recruitment.

Babcock reports “strong progress” Engineering firm, Babcock, which employs 1700 people in Fife, has reported positive market conditions. In its trading update for the year to the end of March it revealed “strong progress” on the previous year, having won or been named as the preferred bidder on contracts worth an additional £1 billion since the end of 2012.

news in brief

Official Launch of FRIC

 BIFAB RECRUIT 15 APPRENTICES Burntisland Fabrications Ltd (BiFab) has offered a life-changing opportunity to 15 new apprentices to undertake general fabrication training at its premises in Fife Energy Park, Methil. On completion, the locally recruited apprentices will have the opportunity to specialise as welders or platers. These recruits are the latest to join the company’s apprenticeship programme which has recruited 70 apprentices in the last four years.

 NEW CRAFT BUSINESS POPS-UP It is all ‘Glitter & Stitches’ for two Aberdour craft experts who have set up a business offering ‘popup’ craft sessions including shoeembellishing, making fascinators and wine glass painting. The duo, which launched Glitter & Stitches at the end of March, is already considering expanding its range of classes to offer children and teenagers’ craft-filled parties.

 IN THE BAG FOR YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS?

Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change, Edward Davey, is joined by guests for the official launch of the Fife Renewables Innovation Centre.

FIFE Energy Park’s flagship development, the Fife Renewables Innovation Centre (FRIC) has been officially opened by the Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change, Edward Davey. The £3 million, state of the art facility based in Methil is a hub for the renewables sector offering exceptional, flexible and affordable business space for innovative firms.

A team of young entrepreneurs from Woodmill High School has been selected as the only Fife team to compete in the National Young Enterprise Scotland Final having won the Fife Young Enterprise Scotland Final. Operating under the company name ‘Restore’, the 13-strong team sold all of its handmade bags made from recycled materials.

 THE COLONEL TAKES A STEP CLOSER KFC is a step closer to opening a restaurant in Glenrothes after Fife Council’s executive committee agreed the sale of land near Fife House. The potential for the fast food chain to create 50 jobs in the area is a welcome boost to local employment. For more news in brief see P7

6

Officially opening the Centre, Mr Davey said: “The Centre is a superb example of Fife leading the way in attracting investment, encouraging innovation and creating jobs in the renewable energy sector. This benefits both Fife as well as the rest of the UK. “Not only is Fife responding to the fast growing demands of renewable energy, they are creating the best environment for businesses to develop. This location on the east coast of Scotland is excellent and the facilities offered at the Innovation Centre are ideal for any investor.

“The Invest in Fife team’s hard work to secure opportunities can be seen in the range of businesses based here already at the Energy Park.” FRIC, one of the fastest growing renewable energy clusters in the UK, has exceeded projected occupancy rates, with 52 per cent of units already occupied. Its target to the end of the financial year in March 2013 was 20 per cent. The Centre’s first tenant which moved into the business facility in August 2012 was Energy Project Management (EPM) Ltd. In 2010 EPM took over the management of Flumill – which has developed and patented a tidal device to harvest electrical power from the natural flow of water. Also choosing FRIC for business premises is REDS (Reach Engineering & Diving Services) and more recently, Samsung Heavy Industries. The Korean company is to base its UK offshore project - to install and test a 7MW offshore wind turbine - in three of the Centre’s office suites. Later this year the Green Deal Advice Centre and Hydrosphere UK Ltd will move into FRIC which is an expansion of the Energy Park Fife, a joint venture between Fife Council and Scottish Enterprise. Speaking about the launch of FRIC, Leader of Fife Council, Councillor Alex Rowley said: “There is no doubt the Fife Renewables Innovation Centre is a key to future growth of our economy and I hope that other businesses grasp the opportunity to be part of Methil’s success story.”

 PEAT INN RECEIVES FURTHER RECOGNITION

FBM Celebrates Jim Trail’s Retirement ONE of Raytheon’s longest serving employees, Jim Trail, has retired after 41 years at the company. To mark his retirement, FBM took the opportunity to chat to Jim and look back on his time at Raytheon. Jim joined as a stores clerk straight from school in May 1972 when the company was run by Hughes Aircraft Company. It wasn’t long before he got his first big break, just four months into the job when he was promoted into the finance team. Jim laughed telling the story, saying: “It was a total fluke. A colleague, who joined on the same day as me but in the finance team, was fired, so I was asked if I wanted the job and the rest, as they say, is history.” After spending about 20 years in a number of finance roles including finance director, Jim’s first operational role was to oversee a specific area of the business which manufactured digital telephone/ answering machines. From there, he was promoted to operations director for the Glenrothes site in 1996 before taking over the reins of the 204,000 sq metres site in 2001. In 2003 Jim was appointed UK Operating Officer and to Raytheon’s Board of Directors, during which time he retained his Glenrothes office, returning permanently in 2007 as managing director. Talking about his former role as MD of the design engineering & manufacturing facility, one of the biggest private companies in Fife, Jim said:

Geoffrey Smeddle, owner of the Michelin-star Peat Inn near Cupar, has been recognised in HotScots Power 40. The chef and Sunday Herald food columnist was ranked 17th on the list of the most influential people in the Scottish hospitality industry.

 ANSTRUTHER GUEST HOUSE GETS TOP AWARD

Jim Trail, former Managing Director of Raytheon, Glenrothes

“I enjoyed the variety of my role. Managing, mentoring and leading 560 employees kept me on my toes, as did the challenge of continuously striving to grow and develop the business.” Under Jim’s leadership the Glenrothes plant secured its best financial performance in its 53 year history, for three consecutive years. He said: “I’m delighted with what was achieved and have left the business in a strong position, having delivered good results and expanded the engineering division to complement the manufacturing offering.” Described by his former PA, Nicola Scott, as a forward looking leader who really cared about his staff, she told FBM that he is greatly missed and the office is a far quieter place. As Jim ‘slows down’, he admitted he is missing work but is enjoying spending time with his family. He has also joined the Children’s Panel where he hopes he can help young people but most of all, he’s looking forward to attending more Aberdeen Football Team matches. Stephen Doran, former COO at Wolfson Microelectronics, joined Raytheon as Jim’s successor in May.

A guest house in Anstruther has received a national award. Spindrift, a four-star property run by Ken and Christine Lawson, is the 2013 Les Routiers Guest House of the Year. The business also has a four-star guest house gold award from Visit Scotland.

 ENERGY ACADEMY PROJECT HEATS UP Leven-based Fife Heat Treatment is working with Opportunities Fife to create nine technician positions for unemployed people aged between 16 and 50 as part of the Energy Academy project. The company, which provides technicians for the energy industry, will take on all nine trainees this year and work closely with Adam Smith and Carnegie Colleges to deliver a skills development programme.

 CARE-AT-HOME PROVIDER CREATES JOBS Fife care company, Avenue Care Services, is to create 40 jobs. The company, which was established in 2011, currently employs 130 people but is looking to expand as demand for care-athome soars. Experience or qualifications for these jobs - thirty of which are full-time and 10 part-time – is not required as full training will be given.

CROWDFUNDING:

an alternative means of raising finance THERE has been a substantial growth in crowdfunding in recent years. While it is not a new concept, it is quickly evolving as an alternative means of raising finance. WHAT IS CROWDFUNDING? The concept is a simple one: lots of people give money to fund a business product or idea. These amounts can start from as little as £10. The fundraising is internet based and the business looking for funding will sign up with a crowdfunding website. Details of the project and the amount to be raised are then posted on the website. At this stage, the business must actively use its contacts and harness its social media outlets to create a buzz and drive traffic to the crowdfunding website in order to raise the funds. Many of these crowdfunding websites will not allow the business to take the money raised if the target is not met.

pledged. Finally, peer to peer loans are offered through crowdfunders such as FundingCircle. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES / DISADVANTAGES OF CROWDFUNDING? The cost of funding is relatively low and the crowdfunding website will typically take a 5 per cent commission on funds raised. In addition, crowdfunding allows a business to test the market and build a community for its product or idea. This can then be used as evidence of demand prior to seeking larger amounts of funding from business angels or banks. In addition, the funders will often be entitled to tax relief.

WHAT ROLE DOES CROWDFUNDING PLAY IN TERMS OF RAISING FINANCE IN THE FUTURE? The sector is in its early stages but it is here to stay and will continue to grow. It is not suitable for all businesses and other funding routes should also be explored such as bank funding, angel investment and local funds such as The East of Scotland Investment Fund (ESIF).  ANGUS MCGUIRE, YOUNG & PARTNERS LLP This article is intended to provide general information and is not intended to constitute legal advice. It is recommended that professional advice is sought in respect of your particular situation.

WHAT TYPES OF CROWDFUNDING WEBSITES ARE AVAILABLE? There are three main types of crowdfunding website. Seedrs and Crowdcube are UK Financial Services Authority registered crowdfunders which allow equity to be taken in the investee company. The second type is the rewards based crowdfunder. These are the most common and include Kickstarter and BloomVC (based in Dundee). Different ‘gifts’ are offered depending on the amount

However, crowdfunding is not appropriate for all types of business and is considered best suited to those which can create a buzz. It has therefore been popular with creative industries projects and social enterprises. In addition, there is a potential for fraud and UK regulators will need to develop controls to ensure that businesses apply the funds for the proper purpose.

Funding offers hope for young entrepreneurs

YOUNG people in Fife will be able to access business start-up funding following the Scottish Government’s award of £1.65 million to The Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland programme. The funding, which will come from Scottish Enterprise’s budget over the next three years, will ensure the continued support of young people in business across Scotland, including Fife. The Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland has supported over 11,000 business start-ups since its launch, offering practical business start-up advice as well as introductory finance training and access to loans of up to £5,000 and grants up to £1,000. Here we highlight one local young person who has successfully started up a textile business with help from The Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland. 10

Whisky distillery planned for Glenrothes Having studied Art and Design, Chloe Brown (24) founded Chloe Brown Illustrations in May 2011. Determined to gain experience and further her enjoyment of silk screen printing, the young artist sought advice from Business Gateway, Be Your Own Boss and The Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland, about the practicalities and requirements of setting-up a business as well as what funding sources were available. Chloe said: “I found grants and loan funding to be quite a minefield. I was lucky enough to have a great YBS regional manager who constantly provides me with support and suggests funding sources. I received loan funding for start-up, but more recently received a grant to help me attend a trade fair from Business Gateway Fife.” Chloe who makes and sells illustrations using silk screen printing methods, has attended two trade fairs and has even set-up events for small businesses, like her own. Such events offer Chloe an opportunity to showcase her collection, boost her network opportunities and the Falkland Christmas shopping event which she organised, offered a boost to the local Fife economy. She said: “Selling is a challenge. It is difficult finding appropriate art events to attend and sometimes the cost for attending is too high to risk, especially during the start-up stage.” And, what does the future hold for the young entrepreneur? Her future is certainly bright. Chloe said: “My last collection testers sold out so quickly that I’m currently working on a new animal illustration collection. I also plan to form a collective with other like-minded artists with the aim of sourcing premises and opening a shop. “I also want to create regular events for Fife artists and to attend more trade fairs and art festivals in the UK.”  www.chloebrownillustrations.co.uk

Women Mean Business: Where the Magic Happens

With planning consent for InchDairnie Distillery granted and work underway to finalise planning conditions, the purchase of land and funding including a grant from Food Processing, Marketing and Cooperation, construction is scheduled to start on the six hectare site, next to Whitehill Industrial Estate, in June. The distillery has been designed and will be developed in phases to allow for future expansion without any disruption to production. On completion in summer 2014, the distillery and maturation warehouses will create ten permanent jobs, increasing to 17 in the first five years. In the first three years, approximately 1.5 million litres of alcohol will be produced and once matured will be exported to India, where demand is high. Ian Palmer, founder of John Fergus & Co, said: “The whisky industry has seen a significant increase in demand from emerging markets. I saw this as an exciting opportunity to venture out on my own after 36 years in the trade, to create a new blend of whisky.” John Fergus & Co is set to launch a public art competition which it aims will influence the build design and branding of InchDairnie.

Bi-Aura therapy practitioner, Sarah-Jane Le Blanc took a leap into the unknown when she set up her business, Soul 2 Soul Therapy, in 2004. Following a twist of fate, she set up her second business, Pet Whisperer in 2010, specialising in animal communication. Speaking to FBM, Sarah-Jane explained that her appointment diary is full for the foreseeable future and she finds it difficult to find time – especially with three children – to develop her business. When she heard about Women Mean Business, a series of Business Gateway Fife workshops geared to help female entrepreneurs with a range of business issues, she jumped at the opportunity. Sarah-Jane said: “Participating in Women Mean Business was such a positive experience. There was a magical energy within the group, with all participants looking to help and support one another. “The opportunity to network and discuss some of the challenges I was facing brought about some practical solutions which will come to fruition shortly. In particular, I will train my administrator as a part-time therapist to free up some of my time to focus on the business.” Using teachings from the workshop, Sarah-Jane secured a Business Gateway Fife grant to develop a teaching CD and has utilised her contacts to appoint an accountant and commission a marketing company.  11

Ingenico to create 21 jobs in Fife Payment technology developer, Ingenico has recently announced that is has invested £250,000 in new facilities and created 21 new jobs at its northern European headquarters in Dalgety Bay, Fife. The investment in a new customisation centre will enable the French firm to double its monthly customisation and hardware refurbishment capacity to 60,000 units per month, further strengthening its European operations. It also hopes the investment will support new contracts in European markets. Twenty one repair technician roles have been added to the Fife workforce which currently employs around 200 members of staff.

Stephen Edmiston, Ingenico’s director of operations for Northern Europe, said: “Expanding our facilities in Scotland makes perfect sense for Ingenico, as we now have a strengthened operational base in the UK and can service a considerably larger portion of the customisation business. “This investment reinforces our commitment to Scotland and the UK, and we expect a significant increase in customisation and refurbishment business as a result of these new, first class facilities.” The firm, which supports the delivery of secure electronic payment and point of sale revenue, has recently reported its intention to boost revenues to above 1.8 million euros by 2016.

Fife Chamber launches new services

FIFE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE APPOINTS NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE Fife Chamber of Commerce has appointed a new chief executive, Andrew Thomson. Welcoming Mr Thomson, Fife Chamber President, John Kilgour, said: “On behalf of the Fife Chamber of Commerce I am delighted to confirm this appointment. Andrew brings a wealth of experience in management in the private sector and in economic regeneration organisations. We look forward to working with him in taking the Chamber forward.” Andrew’s previous role at East Dunbartonshire Enterprise Trust saw him expand private sector membership and sponsorship support, increasing the Trust’s profile and operational effectiveness. Speaking about his appointment, Andrew Thomson, said: “I am very pleased to have been appointed as Chief Executive and welcome the opportunity to work on behalf of the Chamber’s members and will be discussing with them, Fife Council and support organisations as to how best to increase the Chamber’s activities and membership in the coming months.”

14

FIFE Chamber has launched two new member services having partnered with industry specialists, Jumpstart and Scot FX. Jumpstart offers members a helping hand to secure R&D tax credits. The credits, available to any company that spends money trying to improve a product or service through a technology advance, using qualified staff and appropriate project controls, are dependent on the size of the company, its tax rate and how many eligible activities it has. A minefield for many organisations, Jumpstart will work with member companies to advise and help secure R&D tax credits, where applicable.

 FARMERS’ MARKET FOR GLENROTHES

TECHNOLOGY KEY TO GROWTH ORNAMENTAL horticultural wholesale nursery, Growforth Limited was established in 1990 by Stan Green. In that time, the business has grown through a series of expansions and initiatives selling to over 95 per cent of retail garden centres. Growforth also supplies local authorities and landscapers throughout Scotland and recently opened a plant market for the public. However, before it could do that, the company had to update and enhance its IT support systems. Growforth now operates a sophisticated accountancy and stock management system which has improved efficiencies throughout its operations. Stan Green aims to increase business three fold over the coming years. He said:

“The market is sophisticated and to develop the business we had to go back to its core and get those processes and practices right. The new IT system was essential to support growth.” Growforth received a grant from the Fife Investment Fund to help with the cost of the software and to enhance its online presence. Stan added: “We approached Business Gateway for advice on what support and grants might be available to help develop the business. We outlined our strategy and long-term plans and were delighted when we were offered assistance.”

WORKS START AT CLUNY BOND Work is well underway on Diageo’s new filling and maturation site at Begg Farm. The £150 million development, which will house the global drink company’s increasing quantity of maturing Scotch whisky, will run for up to seven years with phase one due for completion in April 2014. Current works involve the construction of seven warehouses and associated plant works, including access roads. In total, Cluny Bond will consist of 276,000 square metres of bonded warehouses and associated buildings. The entire cask handling operation will stock nearly 3 million casks.

The scale of this project is significant and is an additional element of the firm’s investment programme and commitment to Fife. Diageo has invested a total of £91 million in its Leven packaging plant. The site, which bottles Smirnoff vodka, Gordon’s and Tanqueray gins and Captain Morgan rum, has been expanded to include a £86 million state-of-the-art bottling hall, creating over 400 local jobs. A £5 million specialist bottling hall has also been created to meet the demand for luxury Scotch whisky products. These developments bring the number of people employed by Diageo in Fife to around 1,200 making it one of the biggest employers in the area.

Fife Farmers’ Market has expanded its operations to open a new market in Glenrothes. The Fife Farmers’ Market, which operates in Cupar, Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy and St Andrews, will bring its successful event to Glenrothes on the fourth Saturday of June, August and November. Success For Fife Companies at All-Energy 2013 Councillor Lesley Laird, Chair of the Business, Enterprise, Economy & Planning Policy Group, Fife Council is pictured with (l-r) David Littlejohn, Head of Planning & Regeneration, Perth & Kinross Council and George Adam, Lord Provost, Aberdeen City Council at the East Coast Renewables event.

East Coast Renewables showcase at All-Energy

Under the banner of Fife Council’s Market Development Programme 13 Fife organisations visited Aberdeen in May to be part of the UK’s largest renewable energy event, All-Energy 2013. The two-day conference and exhibition, held at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, brought together a range of Fife’s leading renewable companies and support organisations including: Nextgenergy, Hydrosphere UK Ltd, BiFab, BAE Systems, Holoxica Ltd, Briggs Marine and Environmental, The Hydrogen Office, Carnegie College, Invest in Fife Renewables, Reach Engineering & Diving Services (REDS), SOI Group Ltd, Narvida Ltd and Energy Project Management. The conference provided an opportunity for Fife companies to showcase the region’s long tradition of excellence in engineering and manufacturing and offered a platform for those companies eager to rise to new and exciting opportunities. 18

Initial feedback from the event has been positive and Invest in Fife hopes to build on the success of last year’s event, which generated 90 enquiries with potential orders in excess of £3.5 million in the longer term, between the 10 companies who participated. Robin Presswood, Fife Council’s Senior Manager for Business and Strategy, said: “All-Energy offers an excellent opportunity to promote the infrastructure, support services and company capabilities which make Fife a centre of excellence in renewable technologies. The scale and scope of All-Energy is immense and as the show grows year on year, it is ever more important for Fife companies to attend to showcase the region’s wealth of experience and expertise.” If you are interested in other Market Development Programme events, please call Alan McKay on 08451 555 555 (ext 492180) or email: Alan.McKay@fife.gov.uk.

East Coast Renewables was one of over 500 exhibitors to take part in this year’s All-Energy, the 13th event in the annual series. Its exhibition stand, which showcased the strategic alliance’s role in driving Scotland’s renewable energy sector, was complemented with a successful and well-attended business networking lunch. Guests ranging from offshore renewable energy industries through to international partner agencies gathered on the first day of the renewables conference to hear from Andrew Jamieson, Chief Executive of Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult. East Coast Renewables is a grouping of ten of Scotland’s local authorities, including Fife Council, across the East Coast of Scotland which aims to maximise the economic growth potential of the emerging renewable energy sector. The alliance works in partnership with Scottish Enterprise, Scottish Development International, Marine Scotland and the Crown Estate to develop the renewable energy sector and promote the East Coast of Scotland as a location for investment. The regional partnership focuses on a number of priorities from supply chain development and skills and draws research and development expertise and knowledge transfer from universities across the region. The European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre, Energy Park Fife and the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub & Bus project are key projects being developed by partners within the alliance.

WITH EXPERT HELP FROM BUSINESS GATEWAY DX2 Consultancy Ltd, providers of architectural and technical construction services, has received set-up support from Business Gateway Fife. The company, which was established in January 2013 by Derek Grubb and Donna Valente, was given a grant towards the purchase of IT equipment including a largeformat printer and other hardware. The funds will also be used to develop a website for the business. The Glenrothes-based company has also been offered accountancy support to develop its business plan and growth strategy. Derek Grubb, co-owner and director of DX2 Consultancy said: “We’ve had great support from Business Gateway Fife both financially and practically. The grant to buy IT equipment has helped with our set-up costs, plus we are to receive Expert Help to aid our business development. “Starting up a company can be daunting so to receive this kind of help and advice from Business Gateway is much appreciated.” Expert Help can help businesses to access specialist support to help sustain and develop their business in a particular area of expertise. Support can be used towards marketing, sales, PR, HR, process development, quality or financial areas. Derek and Donna first began working together 23 years ago, at Thistle Homes and Andrew Davie Timber-Frame Homes, housing developers within Fife, and whose projects included Dunfermline’s “Queens

Gate”. Professionally, their career paths crossed again when they worked for Lomond Homes from 2007 until late 2012. The two directors have significant experience and knowledge across a range of sectors, including housing, commercial/ industrial, leisure and healthcare, and DX2 Consultancy offers a range of services including architectural designs and construction details to project management and sub-contractor coordination. Derek added: “It was a natural step to set-up the business. We’ve already secured a number of projects, are growing a client base and have exceeded our initial expectations. “Looking to the future, our focus is towards the new-build market where we have significant experience, but we also aim to build our network with the use of partnerships, so as to develop the business.” DX2 Consultancy is working closely with two other newly established Lomond Homes spin-off companies, being timberframe specialists NAStech Construction, and surveying/engineering practice Prism Engineering (Scotland), with the group being able to offer a comprehensive range of architectural and construction “concept to keys” services. Derek has a keen interest in energyefficient construction and, in his role as senior architectural technician for Lomond, was heavily involved as a project manager at Kingdom Housing Association’s recent Housing Innovation Showcase project in Dunfermline. He has also been appointed to the board of Fife Construction Forum.

FIFE Cultural Trust has launched a new support initiative for the creative and cultural sector. The Create in Fife programme provides creative businesses and practitioners with the opportunity to access training opportunities, attend a series of networking events and apply for sector specific funding. Making funds available to support innovation helps small businesses like mine get their ideas off the ground. “I am going to be applying for this funding to help with the costs of marketing the new workshop side of my business. It will help me to get to where I need to be. But it’s more than money, it’s about surrounding yourself with industry professionals who share your values and have a wealth of knowledge. JOIN OUR ADVOCATE PROGAMME TO PROMOTE FIFE

Introducing Councillor Lesley Laird Councillor Lesley Laird, Fife Council’s new executive member for Business, Enterprise, Economy & Planning spoke to Fife Business Matters about her strong vision for the future of Fife’s economy.

routes including its Supplier Development Programme and Market Development Programme, offering advice on how best to develop opportunities and broaden their business network.

Tell us about the challenges ahead: I want to build on the hard work already underway by Fife’s partners, and coming from a business background I can appreciate and understand some of the challenges that businesses are facing today. It’s essential that we continue to work in partnership with key business sectors, small businesses, schools and education to build a workforce for Fife that can not only meet the challenges of today but also positions us well for the future.

The Fife Youth Job Contract, via our Opportunities Fife Partnership gives businesses support to take on an apprentice, foster their development, equipping them with skills that will ultimately benefit their business and the local economy.

Partnering with Education and Colleges is key to unlocking our young people’s potential, by supporting, retraining and developing people who want to become part of the growing Fife economy. What are Fife’s strengths? Fife has a diverse and relatively strong economic base. Our manufacturing sector continues to perform well and is developing in the areas of energy, including oil, gas and renewables. Tourism has grown year on year and there are still opportunities to improve our wider offering and attract new visitors. The food and drink sector has a key part to play in this to ensure we have a strong product to offer. What opportunities are there for Fife businesses? Fife Council Economic Development can support businesses through various

What challenges need to be addressed to help businesses flourish? Economic challenges are always with us - what we want to focus on is our strengths. We already do a lot of things well - we now need to push on - take things to the next level. We need to continue to raise awareness, attainment and ambition for Fife’s young people through our Culture of Enterprise framework - partnering with schools, colleges and business to promote enterprise and to enable us to match skills gaps with curriculum development in order to support our key industry sectors. Councillor Laird concluded: “There is no doubt about the ambition and willingness of businesses, schools, colleges and young people to work together and I am therefore very keen for us to mobilise that positive mindset and goodwill. The Council has a key part to play in facilitating and supporting the various partnerships that are all working for the benefit of the people of Fife.”

PROMOTING Fife has launched the Fife Place Promotion Plan, following the completion of a comprehensive Perception Study. The plan is aimed at supporting and enabling growth in the local economy by increasing positive awareness as a means of attracting people and businesses to invest, live, work, study and visit. To achieve this, Promoting Fife has identified a collaborative approach involving businesses and individuals – those who work and live in the region - to share consistent, succinct messages and stories as a means of promoting Fife, its assets and investment opportunities to external audiences. The team wants to hear from passionate people and business leaders who would like to help promote Fife and what they do through their networks, customers and current promotions. Promoting Fife already engages with many businesses and individuals but is ramping up its efforts by rolling out an Advocate Programme that will help endorse Fife on a national level. A self-service toolkit will be created to provide Advocates with the right information. It will include key facts, infographics, imagery and information about Fife successes, companies operating in the region and merchandise. Promoting Fife is looking for your involvement on the type of information that should be included. If you’ve specific ideas or needs or would like to help join and shape the Advocate Programme, please email Sharon Rice-Jones (Sharon.Rice-Jones@fife.gov.uk) or visit www.welcometofife.com and complete the feedback form.

Established over 100 years ago, Fishers Services Ltd, a leading supplier of linen rentals to the hospitality, healthcare, microelectronics, pharmaceutical and industrial sectors, has driven down its environmental impact in recent years with the introduction of new machinery and innovative processes. Operating at six plants across Scotland and Northern England, the company is committed to measuring and improving its environmental impact; including minimising the use of materials, water and energy, whilst also working to minimise environmental risks and waste production in all areas of its business. Bruce McHardy, Managing Director at Fishers Services Ltd, said: “We continually strive to improve our environmental performance and develop our environmental management systems, as well as ensuring our staff have adequate training in order to reach these targets. Good environmental management is good business.

22

“Our commitment to the environment is not just in the form of words. We also hold ISO accreditation 14001 demonstrating our intention to continuously improve and develop our operations.” Fishers develops and operates its environmental practices in accordance with its ISO accreditation 14001. ISO 14001 is for all organisations large or small and covers all sectors, including charities and the voluntary sector. It helps make operations more environmentally friendly, by measuring consumption and reducing waste.

Fishers Services processes and delivers over two million pieces of linen each week to a range of industries. As Scotland’s longest established textile services company, it employs 750 staff at six plants to support its supply to almost 1800 customers. INTRODUCING ENTERPRISE TO FIFE’S FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS YOUNG people from across Fife have been introduced to future career and business opportunities through a series of enterprise initiatives. The Energy Enterprise Challenge was organised through Fife Council’s Economic Development Team as part of its Culture of Enterprise Framework. The programme, delivered in partnership with The Hydrogen Office, offered young people an insight into future careers and the possibilities for new business within the renewable energies sector.

Pupils from Kings Road Primary School received the Energy Prize Challenge Award from Paul Trayner of Energy Project Management Ltd.

The team visited 21 schools across Fife delivering one-day sessions to Primary 7 classes. Pupils were able to experiment with solar power, wind turbines and hydrogen fuel technology and were given the chance to design their own structures for the offshore wind industry. Following the school visits, a team from each school was then selected to compete in the Challenge Finals in May at the Fife Renewables Innovation Centre in Methil. Teams had to build prototypes of their designs within a budget and present their business plans to local business leaders from the renewables industry, including Gener8Power, Energy Project Management and Peachy Keen Ltd. The grand final saw a team of Primary 7 pupils from Kings Park Primary School crowned winners of the Energy Enterprise Challenge 2013. Robin Presswood, Senior Manager, Fife Council Business & Employability, said: “This is a great way to teach young people about renewable energy and business. As they enjoy the tasks and learn about the potential for the renewable sector in Fife, they are inspired about business and career possibilities.”

NEW EMPLOYEES FOR ENTERPRISE GAME

Balmullo Primary School takes part in the Fife Schools Enterprise Game. Enterprise Apprentices (l-r): Mary Thomson, Shannen Scott and Rebekah Beaton. Pupils (l-r): Scott Thaw, Fraser Reed, Steven Nicholls, Declan Foulkes and Casey Stevens.

THE Fife Schools Enterprise Game has inspired around 5000 young people to get involved in enterprise activities and now has its own “apprentices”. Since its launch in 2011 the game has proved popular with pupils and teachers. Now, three young apprentices have been tasked with encouraging schools to participate in enterprise programmes and with working closely with companies to demonstrate how young people can be an asset to business. Their first action was to visit Balmullo Primary School to sign up new recruits to the Enterprise Game. Speaking after the session, Shannen Scott, one of the apprentices, said: “I really enjoy delivering the Enterprise Game as part of my apprenticeship. It encourages young people to think more creatively which is fantastic. I find the apprenticeship challenging but an excellent way of developing skills in a business environment. It gives me the right experience that companies are looking for when they employ young people. The career prospects after my apprenticeship are endless.” The programme for Apprenticeships in Enterprise, a first in Scotland, was developed by Cupar based Career Studio (Scotland) Ltd and supported by Fife Council’s Economic Development team as part of the Culture of Enterprise Framework.
