WELCOME to Fife Business Matters WELCOME to the latest edition of Fife Business Matters, the first of 2014. The year has started positively and there is a real sense of optimism from businesses operating in and around Fife. In this issue you will hear from a range of companies who are embracing growth, investing in new products and services or diversifying into new markets.

This is exceptionally encouraging as we seek to grow and develop the Fife economy.

Last October, we launched the Fife Economic Strategy 2013-23 which sets out the ways organisations believe Fife can move further ahead over the coming years as we recover from the global financial crisis, tackle the barriers to employment some of the residents face, and help Fife’s businesses take advantage of opportunities for growth.

At the end of 2013, a new source of funding support was made available to existing businesses by the launch of a Town Centre Business Support Grant Fund.

Business Gateway Fife has had over 50 enquiries about the scheme and has already awarded a number of grants.

The region continues to invest in our young people through a range of initiatives. We have just announced we are extending our Apprentices in Enterprise programme, following its successful pilot.

Nineteen young people will now be given the opportunity to start and develop an enterprising career.

This is just some of the positive news we have to share - you will read much more over the coming pages. We have regular contributions from Fife Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Small Businesses, Business Gateway Fife and Invest in Fife.

There is still much to do this year in identifying and driving new opportunities across the region, but by working together, the future is bright for businesses in Fife, and we look forward to sharing many of our successes with you over the coming months.

THE Fife economy is slowly recovering from the global financial crisis of 2007-08 and we’re starting to see the green shoots of recovery. The New Year has brought a feeling of optimism and we’re seeing businesses embrace opportunities for growth – new skills, new markets, new ways of reaching customers, new products and services – whilst recognising that the local communities in which they operate are invaluable to success.

The future is bright for businesses in Fife. Already we are seeing examples of companies investing once more, with many utilising existing skill sets as a means to grow.

ExxonMobil Chemical Limited, which operates the Fife Ethylene Plant, recently completed a major investment programme of refurbishment and maintenance essential for the long term safety and efficiency of the plant.

Fife Business Matters met with its new Plant Manager, Karl Krotzer, to hear more about the investment in the facilities, its staff and about community initiatives.

Karl said: “The Fife Ethylene Plant was initially intended to operate into the early 21st century. A mix of continuous small investment projects along with the recent investment of approximately £20 million will secure more than 290 jobs at the plant for the longer term.

“The investment was to improve the Amine processing unit, which gives us greater flexibility and more capacity to process North Sea gases which we could not process before the changes, while ensuring safety and efficiency.”

Karl is responsible for the plant which can produce up to 830,000 tonnes of Ethylene each year, the largest plant of its type in Europe. Health and safety is a high priority at the plant and is a daily consideration.

Karl added: “Managing the safety of our employees, contractors and the local community is of paramount importance and we’re proud of our record to date - there hasn’t been a time-losing injury for over a decade. Much of that is due to the diligence and mindset of our employees who are quick to identify possible risks and hazards.

“My day also involves spending time in the field, checking and managing any potential risks by talking to the team which is made up of process technicians, mechanical and electrical technicians as well as the office based staff who support our operations.”

The Fife Ethylene Plant recognises that Fife’s people are an economic asset, and currently supports 22 apprentices through its training programme, which in its 29 year history has trained over 250 students. It also aims to improve the quality of life for people living close to its plant at Mossmorran.

Speaking about the range of initiatives the plant delivers to make a positive difference to the local community, Karl said: “Over the last ten years, we have supported the local community with over £1.4 million in sponsorships and donations, which includes charitable donations from our Safety Incentive Scheme, of approximately £300,000, to local community projects, ranging from sponsoring a guide dog to buying a wheelchair for a young girl with cerebal palsy and epilepsy.”

The plant also supports young people in understanding the vital role science and technology play in business as well as the benefits it can bring to everyday life. Its Generation Science programme takes experts from the Edinburgh International Science Festival to schools across Scotland to give enjoyable, educational science lessons to pupils, while its environmental educational scheme brings 1200 school children onsite each year to educate students on mini beasts in an environmental pond setting.

Karl concluded: “This is a really exciting challenge for me at a time when we have secured the long term future for the plant, and we remain committed to investing in a business which continues to grow and which works closely with the local community to do so.”

FRIC tenants

FRIC celebrates its first year AS the Fife Renewables Innovation Centre (FRIC) gears up to celebrate its first birthday in April, it offers a timely opportunity to reflect on its successes to date.

The £3 million, state of the art facility based in Methil, was launched by the Rt. Hon. Edward Davey, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, and at the time, Mr Davey said: “The Centre is a superb example of Fife leading the way in attracting investment, encouraging innovation and creating jobs in the renewable energy sector. This benefits both Fife as well as the rest of the UK. “Not only is Fife responding to the fast growing demands of renewable energy, it is creating the best environment for businesses to develop. This location on the east coast of Scotland is excellent and the facilities offered at the Innovation Centre are ideal for any investor.”

FRIC is a hub for the renewables sector offering exceptional, flexible and affordable business space and has already exceeded projected occupancy rates. As one of the fastest growing renewable energy clusters in the UK, FRIC received a significant boost when Samsung Heavy Industries chose it as its base for its UK offshore wind project.

The Centre is also home to Influx Innovative Services, Reach Engineering & Diving Services, Hydrosphere UK Ltd and Energy Project Management, its first tenant.

Over the last year, the Fife Renewables Innovation Centre has established itself as an event venue, playing host to a number of conferences, information days, seminars, workshops and school events.

The Energy Enterprise Challenge, organised by Fife Council Economic Development as part of its Culture of Enterprise Framework, brought together 14 local primary schools to give young people an insight into further career prospects in the renewables energies sector, Green Business Fife’s annual conference and Graham Construction and Samsung Heavy Industries community information day, were all popular and successful events.

“The Fife Renewables Innovation Centre is key to the growth of our economy, and over the last year, we have seen many companies grasp the opportunity to be part of this success story.”

Fife Council leads the way in renewables River Energy System’s Hydros device on the River Leven

SE grant allows River Energy Systems to move towards production RIVER Energy Systems has developed a hydro energy device and is hoping to move into production this year, thanks to support from Scottish Enterprise.

The company, based in Methil, has received a grant of £260,000 under the SMART Research & Development initiative, to undertake development of the device, named Hydros, to the point it can be commercialised.

Hydros is based on a helical screw which rotates with the movement of the water to generate electrical power. It is scaleable to any river size, sits under the water line and is designed to have a minimal impact on the river environment.

Paul Trayner, managing director of River Energy Systems, said: “It is exciting that we are now able to demonstrate this device to potential investors and customers. This trial device, which was designed and manufactured in Fife, could, itself, supply a typical house with its energy needs so the opportunity for a much bigger river is significant.”

Cllr Tom Adam, chair of Levenmouth Area Committee said: “Fife is fast becoming recognised as a centre of excellence in the renewables industry and the continuing innovation and manufacturing opportunities are great news for jobs and the local economy.”

FIFE Council has been named the leading local authority in Scotland for its work to promote the renewables sector, having scooped the Public Sector Initiative title at the Scottish Green Energy Awards.

Councillor Lesley Laird, Executive Spokesperson for Business, Enterprise, Economy & Planning said: “This is a great achievement for Fife and rounds off a hugely successful year.

“Not only does this accolade highlight the wealth of work done by the council and its key partners to promote this important sector, it also shows the council is committed to ensuring progress towards ambitious renewable energy targets too.

/ DUNFERMLINE ESTATE AGENT WINS 2013 BEST AGENT SCOTLAND Dunfermline’s Maloco + Associates has won Relocation Agent Network’s 2013 Best Agent Scotland Region Award, for a second consecutive year. The solicitor and estate agent scooped the annual prize for the agent that has consistently made the best overall contribution to the network in Scotland throughout 2013.

/ MODERN APPRENTICESHIP AWARDS RECOGNISES FIFE WINNERS Score Europe, which has two facilities in Fife, has won Scotland’s Large Employer of the Year category at the Modern Apprenticeship Awards 2013. The company, which is headquartered in Peterhead, has over 300 apprentices in its UK workforce.

Argos Kirkcaldy employee, Jemma Oliver also won an award, being crowned Scotland’s Level 2 Modern Apprentice of the Year.

She is now working towards her Level 3 retail management apprenticeship and is seen by her employers as a future manager.

How to approach the bank

– Top Tips 2013 saw confidence returning to the business marketplace; according to Clydesdale Bank’s own research an estimated 86 per cent of businesses planning to invest this year. So how are you going to achieve that? Here are a few suggestions on how to approach your bank to agree the funding options required to support your initiative.

1. Pitch and Tone – “Keep it simple.” An over-elaborate plan or pitch can distract from the key points you really need to make. The way you present your case does reflect on you – you want to give the audience confidence that you know your business and can deliver what you say. Have a clear strategy in mind and make points that link to the key activities of the business.

2. Who knows the Plan? Prepare for the meeting properly; be clear on what your objectives and goals are for the business in the short and long-term. If you have a business plan, bring it. It is best when the people that know the plan and the operations are present to explain and clarify any points - the bank is looking for key people to demonstrate that they are fully engaged and committed to delivering the plan, both historically and in the future. Provide cashflow forecasts, costs and any assumptions, to illustrate why you need the money and the amount requested, and how any loan can be repaid over the businesses’ preferred term.

3. Where, What and When – Agree a clear agenda with the Bank beforehand about what you are trying to achieve at a meeting. Ensure that all key sites can be visited and key people are available. Financial information provided beforehand will deepen the conversation.

4. Risk Management or Sales Pitch? When presenting your suitability for funding, you have to strike the right balance between the positives and demonstrating you know the risks and limitations of your business. An internal view of the business’ capability should be presented together with a perspective on the key external factors. (Porter’s “Five Forces” analysis is good way to assess these) The bank will take comfort from a management team that can make an honest assessment and articulate these clearly.

5. The Numbers – Have your most up to date annual and management accounts, and be in a position to articulate trends, for example sales volumes, margins, overheads and drawings policy.

6. Life Cycles – Show that you are aware of where the industry life cycle is currently, where your business has reached in its own life cycle and where the main product/service sit within its own life cycle. Demonstrate how these are managed and what actions will influence opportunity for the future.

7. Open Mind – Don’t go in to the meeting with a fixed idea of what you need – be open to all types of finance options and structures. Be clear on the businesses’ asset conversion cycle; what you are funding and what will repay the funding.

It is better to align your funding to the assets deployed to repay - focus on the key contributions.

8. Agreeing the price – The pricing of any borrowing should always be a full negotiation with both parties achieving agreed terms for the business. The cost will reflect the risk, loan size and term of the borrowing and should reflect your specific circumstances.

9. Initial and On-going Terms – If there are conditions to be met to access the funding, and for the on-going monitoring of repayment vehicles, these should be mutually agreed at the outset. Agree the key items and discuss and agree others for consideration. Again these should be clear and achievable both immediately and throughout the term of the facility.

10. Keep Talking – The best relationships are where the communication is regular and two-way. Its best when it’s planned, agreed and focussed to suit the business events throughout the year. This creates confidence within the partnership and eases the route to further support.

Following these simple but effective tips are likely to improve your discussion and help reach the right decision for the business. So here’s to a year of action in 2014!

Boni Hair Extensions opened in Cupar in November 2013

PTYBS loan helps start-up business A young entrepreneur and student has received help to open North East Fife’s first hair extension salon, after applying for a loan from The Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland (PTYBS).

Katrina Poca (24), originally from Latvia, has been living in Cupar for the last five years and took the step after having hair extensions fitted herself.

She launched her business, Boni Hair Extensions, specialising in the fitting of human hair extensions, in November 2013.

Katrina is also a fourth year 3D design student at Fife College.

Speaking about her motivation to set-up in business, Katrina said: “I wanted to have some hair extensions fitted, but could not find anyone in Fife, so I travelled to Dundee. I loved my new look and started to research hair extensions, fittings, types of hair and decided to train as a hair extension technician.

“I went back to Latvia where I had tuition and gained qualifications allowing

me to fit human hair extensions. I was fitting hair extensions for my friends and family for the price of hair only, to gain experience until I felt confident enough to offer hair extension fitting services to paying clients.

I then became self-employed and worked from home before I opened my own shop.”

Katrina, like many young people, had a dream and an aspiration to start-up her own business but didn’t know how to go about it.

After a recommendation, she called Business Gateway Fife and before long had met an adviser who in turn introduced Katrina to The Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland.

Katrina wrote and presented a business plan to secure a loan of £1850 from PTYBS to set-up her business.

The business has experienced a successful initial period of trading. Katrina added: “I love being my own boss. This is definitely one of the best things I have ever done and I am proud of what I have achieved. For those in a similar position, thinking of setting-up their own business, my advice is go for it!”

PTYBS works closely with Business Gateway Fife to support young people aged 18 – 30 to start-up and grow in business. It provides essential funding and professional mentoring support including support to write a business plan, introductory finance training as well as offering loans of up to £5000 and grants of up to £1000.

Fife companies showcase engineering excellence at Southern Manufacturing 2014 exhibition EXHIBITIONS can be a very effective way to market goods and services, raise a company’s profile and meet existing customers while targeting new ones.

Fife Council’s Market Development Programme offers a practical and effective way for local companies to take part in events and trade shows.

Fife Council Economic Development regularly organises group stands at major national and international events and provides

a range of support services from advice and information to customised training.

As part of the programme, February’s Southern Manufacturing event – the UK’s largest regional manufacturing technology, electronics and subcontracting exhibition – saw six local companies exhibit on the Fife stand.

AGS Electronics, Contract Solutions Scotland, Coorstek, Fife Fabrications, PR2 and Plastech Group showcased Fife’s engineering excellence at the two day event.

Pamela Stevenson, Lead Officer at Fife Council Economic Development, said: “Southern Manufacturing covers a wide range of sectors and is supported by a comprehensive programme of industry seminars and workshops addressing topics such as lean manufacturing, quality and supply chain management. The 2014 exhibition was the largest to date and included new product zones and industry supplier trails with over 600 exhibitors and over 6,500 visitors.

“Companies participating on the Fife stand last year received over 60 enquiries between them with potential orders worth over £1million. Other Fife companies visiting the show were able to use the stand as a base to explore the show and consider participation at this or other events in the Market Development Programme.”

Survey shows confidence growing amongst Fife tourism businesses Launch of Outdoor Fife

FTP celebrates 2013 achievements with award THE Fife Tourism Partnership has scooped a bronze award in the COSLA Excellence Awards 2014.

The partnership, a private sector led initiative supported by Fife Council to support and develop tourism business, was

recognised in the ‘Strong and Sustainable Communities’ category, for its extensive programme of activity which included the launch of Outdoor Fife, the Meetings and Weddings website, the growth of Cruise Forth, support for Food from Fife and the Fife Golf Partnership plus a major radio promotion.

Taking a royal look at attracting visitors THE Mid-Fife & Kirkcaldy Local Tourism Association is developing a royal history project, ‘In The Footsteps of Kings’.

Drew Shedden, chair of the LTA, said: “Since Macbeth, there is a good story that needs to be told about the royalty who have passed through the area. Their story and the

steps they made can be a main reason for drawing visitors to Mid Fife.”

With support from Fife Council through the Fife Tourism Partnership, the LTA has developed plans with a tourism consultant and engaged a web design company.

Spotlight on golf THE spotlight on golf and the 2014 Ryder Cup is good news for golf in Fife.

Liam Barn, manager of the Fife Golf Partnership, explains: “Fife is already on the international golf map and interest is growing because of the British Open in 2015.

We are keen to keep building interest amongst the international tour operators to see confirmed bookings for golf courses, hotels and other attractions. By offering a good all-round package with a variety of golf experiences and plenty for non-golfers to enjoy we can build trade that will last beyond 2014 and 2015.” www.visitfifegolf.com

A new survey of Fife tourism businesses has shown growing confidence in the sector.

More than 75 per cent of businesses intend to expand or invest this year and over half of respondents reported an increase in repeat business.

Use of online marketing is also increasing in the Fife tourism sector, as is the formation of partnerships, with more than half working with other businesses in the local area.

The survey was carried out by the Fife Tourism Partnership. Its chairman, John Parker, said: “This year’s survey is significantly more optimistic than last year and it is heartening to see that the use of digital marketing, collaboration with other local businesses and plans to improve facilities, explore new markets and expand are all on the agenda.”

Cllr Lesley Laird, Fife Council’s Executive Spokeperson for Business, Enterprise, Economy & Planning, said: “This is a welcome piece of research.

Fife Council recognises the strategic importance of tourism which is worth £313 million per annum and supports around 6,000 jobs. The review of the Fife tourism strategy will find the survey results very useful.”

FIFE Council is changing its procurement process, as it bids to become more effective and improve its engagement with local businesses, offering them the opportunity to bid for more business.

From 1st April its new eProcurement system is expected to make procurement more efficient with suppliers receiving orders, providing invoices and answering queries through the system.

This is one of a number of changes Fife Council is to introduce as it seeks to make Fife the best place to do business, while tackling its budget deficit of £90 million to 2017.

Cllr Lesley Laird, Fife Council’s Executive Spokesperson for Business, Enterprise, Economy & Planning, said: “The Council spends £300 million of public money each year on goods, services and works.

“When out visiting businesses in Fife one topic that is always raised is how can local businesses do more business with the Council. This programme is one way we are seeking to address that concern and I would urge local businesses to register and take up the offer of free training and support.”

Procurement is changing at Fife Council

The Council will also introduce category management in order to manage external spend in a more consistent way.

This will highlight and provide more opportunities for local suppliers; apply a consistent approach and structured contract monitoring procedures to suppliers of the Council; improve compliance management; and challenge demand from buyers across the Council before a purchase is made.

These changes will bring a number of sustainable benefits intended to allow the Council to do business with local suppliers more easily – an important element in creating growth in the local economy.

As part of changes to Fife Council’s procurement process a system named iSupplier is also being implemented. A single website with one-off registration will ensure that the process is more efficient and all relevant paperwork viewed on one straightforward website.

FIFE Chamber of Commerce has appointed Eric Byiers as chief executive. Mr Byiers took up the post in January and brings a wealth of experience in the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Lovely pigeon flies high SCOTTISH design studio, Lovely Pigeon is flying high as it continues to develop international partnerships from its Fife base.

Kirsty Thomas runs Lovely Pigeon, which specialises in handcrafted jewellery, screen prints and paper products inspired by the colours and geometry of the local environment, from a former net loft in the village of Cellardyke. Established in 2009, Lovely Pigeon now works with more than 50 international design retailers and gallery spaces including Tate Modern, The Design Museum, The Barbican and galleries of modern art in Denmark and Singapore.

Lovely Pigeon was awarded the Create in Fife Creative Collaboration Award in November 2013, recognising Kirsty’s successful partnership with international interiors brand, Formica.

Over the last nine months the Lovely Pigeon studio has been working closely with Formica’s UK marketing team to develop a new jewellery collection, using Formica laminate combined with brushed copper, and present it to an international market. In September 2013 Lovely Pigeon was supported by Formica to showcase the jewellery collection at London Design Festival.

Fife town centre business support fund helps local businesses FIFE Council’s Town Centre Business Support programme, which is being delivered through Business Gateway Fife, has had a promising start, receiving over 50 enquiries, since its launch in December (2013).

The £150,000 fund, which offers businesses a 50 per cent contribution grant (capped at £2,000), aims to regenerate high streets, helping to fill vacant units, encourage existing owners to improve their premises and give businesses the chance to develop. So far, a range of businesses have applied for funding. Five have received funding: one vacant property improvement grant and four business improvement grants.

CLEAR Buckhaven, a communitybased charity promoting environmental action for regeneration received a vacant property improvement grant to help improve new premises in central Buckhaven. Its secretary, Dr Allen Armstrong, said: “Establishing a high street presence will have a significant impact on our work and this funding will help us make improvements to an office-shop which stood empty for years. We hope to replace the front windows, improve the display areas and ventilation as well as erect signage.”

Reducing energy: one of the biggest costs for any business

BUSINESS Gateway Fife’s low carbon advisory service is going from strength to strength.

The service, supported by Fife Council European funding, was set-up to assist businesses in reducing energy consumption and saving money.

The team has been undertaking free onsite reviews to identify opportunities for improvements in energy, waste and water consumption. It recently advised Fife Fabrication Limited (FiFab), which if it undertakes the recommended measures, could realise yearly cost savings of over £9,000.

Steven Smith of FiFab, said: “We have a facility in Glenrothes which is over 100,000 sq.ft. It is critical to our ongoing business success that we continually look to reduce our running costs. Undertaking this exercise has been incredibly useful in terms of reviewing our lighting and heating systems, and we hope by undertaking these recommendations, we will realise significant annual savings as well as reduce our carbon emissions.”

Another Fife business also in the process of implementing recommendations following a low carbon review is The Migele Experience, a hair and beauty salon in Kirkcaldy. The team there is introducing biodegradable disposable towels (to cut down laundry requirements), replacing lighting with LED equivalents and is to replace the heating system with slimline energy efficient heaters in a bid to make cost savings of £2665 per annum and reduce carbon emissions by 11804kg per annum.

Eclipse grows to meet demand

Penny Press Factory sets sights further afield THE Penny Press Factory, the manufacturer of distinctive, modern penny press souvenir machines, is set to expand this year as it targets new markets in the UK and Europe.

West Fife Young Entrepreneur 2013 Crowned A 17 year-old from Dunfermline has been named West Fife young Entrepreneur 2013 - winning a package of business support worth £10,000.

Lachlan Edwards impressed the judges with his United Bass Culture concept, an online music promotion platform which uses social media as a hub.

Donna Reynolds, partner at CCW, who hosted the awards night, said: “Everyone was impressed by Lachlan and especially the fact that he has developed and refined his idea over a period of time.

“The judges subjected Lachlan and the other finalists to some fairly tough questioning, but also offered them great advice. The spirit of young enterprise is clearly alive and kicking in West Fife and we wish Lachlan the very best. We also hope the other finalists will go on to pursue their own business dreams.”

The package of support for the winner includes £2500 cash when the business is registered, legal services from CCW LLP, accountancy services from Thomson Cooper and financial and banking support from Bank of Scotland.

Judges were Fife entrepreneur Gerard Eadie CBE, Chairman of CR Smith; Scott Cairns of James Donaldson & Sons Limited; Pauline Braisby of Hand Picked and Scotland rugby star Ally Kellock. Resource Efficient Solutions established

RESOURCE Efficient Solutions LLP has been set up by Fife Council to provide waste and resource management services.

Due to launch on 1st April 2014, Resource Efficient Solutions will provide resource efficient solutions services to Fifebased companies and organisations working further afield.

Its sister company, Fife Resource Solutions will provide similar services to Fife Council and work in partnership with the council to support its renewable energy plans. These include its £15.5 million anaerobic digestion plant, which will produce renewable power and heat from food and garden waste by Fife households.

When fully operational, it will process up to 43,000 tonnes of separately collected food and garden waste every year, to power up to 1500 homes.

Chris Ewing, Resource Efficient Solutions’ Chief Operating Officer, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to embrace climate change and offer waste and resource management services to Fife Council and the wider Fife market.

“There are big challenges ahead for businesses and the public sector in addressing climate change, for example, reducing our dependence on carbon based fossil fuels and embracing opportunities in renewable power. Inchdairnie Distillery a step closer FIFE Council has completed important work on a new business park extension at Osprey Road, Glenrothes, which will accommodate the town’s proposed new distillery.

Site servicing works, incorporating the creation of a new access road, which cost £156,000, have been completed on schedule.

The 13.59 acre site forms an extension to Whitehill Industrial Estate, a portion of which will be home to the new Fife whisky distillery being constructed by John Fergus and Co Ltd. The distillery project has an investment value of around £7 million and will create a total of 15 jobs.

Bassaguard Business Park opens with full occupancy THE first phase of Barnetts Properties Ltd’s £1.5m business park in St Andrews has opened, with full occupancy.

Several of the units were pre-let to firms working in oil services R&D, laundry and accountancy industries as well as one of the tenants of the old units on the site, who wishes to expand. A biotechnology firm has just confirmed its tenancy, which means the whole of building one is now let.

HADIE gets full support THE Regeneration Action Plan for Hillend and Donibristle Industrial Estate (HADIE) has been fully endorsed by local councillors, with agreement to include the key recommendations in the forthcoming development plan for Fife, which will provide guidance on future development in the estate.

The committee also supported officers setting up a steering group which will progress the delivery of the action plan as well as exploring the potential benefits of setting up a Business Improvement District (BID), a business led delivery mechanism which could fund and coordinate the delivery of the action plan and which would support the businesses with coordinated investment in an improved working environment, improved marketing and promotion, coordinated estate management and collective purchasing power.

Businesses within the estate are invited to join the steering group to agree the priorities for action and to consider how best to deliver results.

Councillor Lesley Laird, Executive Spokesperson for Business, Enterprise, Economy & Planning said: “It’s important that all businesses are aware that they are invited to join a steering group to co-ordinate and drive delivery of the plan. Working in partnership with business and all stakeholders is a key priority for the Council.”

IIF showcases Fife’s offshore wind supply chain capabilities INVEST in Fife attended the Scottish Renewables Offshore Wind & Supply Chain Conference in Aberdeen recently, to launch its new marketing brochure - Fife’s offshore wind supply chain capability - which showcases the range of Fife based companies which supply the offshore wind sector with world leading skills and experience.

Also exhibiting at the conference were Babcock, Hydrosphere, BVG Associates and REDS. Bifab, SMRU Marine, Briggs Marine and Malcargo Marine also attended the event to learn about development and to develop their markets in the offshore wind sector.

More Fife businesses to benefit from grant scheme TO date, Scottish Enterprise’s Regional Selective Assistance scheme has attracted nearly £40 million of funding into Fife and created 2,652 jobs.

The current programme is changing in July 2014 and Fife Council is working to help even more businesses benefit from the scheme. Its Executive Committee agreed to support a draft map for Assisted Areas which has retained much of Fife’s existing coverage along with new areas in Crosshill, Lochgelly, Cowdenbeath, Leven and Markinch.

Councillor Lesley Laird, Executive Spokesperson for Business, Enterprise, Economy & Planning said: “With even more areas in Fife now eligible for the grant we want to make sure that businesses in Fife are aware of what is on offer and that they take advantage of the support available to them. Carr’s Flour Mill reports positive start for Kirkcaldy mill THE company behind Scotland’s first new mill in 25 years has reported that it is already seeing financial benefits from its multi-million pound investment.

Carr’s reported that its new dockside mill in Kirkcaldy is supporting the company in delivering the operational efficiencies it had sought.

A company statement, the first since the full commissioning of its Kirkcaldy mill, said: “Following the strategic investment, our new mill at Kirkcaldy is now fully operational and we are beginning to see the financial benefits linked to the improved operational efficiencies, as well as commercial benefits from having a state-ofthe-art-mill in a prime location.”

YOU can’t buy much for £1 these days, let alone make any money from such a small amount – or can you?

That’s the challenge third year pupils at Lochgelly, Woodmill, St Columbas and Bell Baxter High School faced in February as they took part in a project called Micro Tyco. They had just one month to take £1 seed money and use it to generate as much money as possible.

Micro Tyco is being run by Scottish charity Wildhearts along with Fife Council’s Culture of Enterprise to encourage and inspire young people to develop their entrepreneurial and business skills.

Fairmont St Andrews, Fife College, Royal Bank of Scotland PLC, CR Smith and Optos PLC are also involved in the project, mentoring participants. Results to follow in the next issue.

Apprentices in Enterprise programme extended THE Apprentices in Enterprise programme is being extended, supporting a further 19 apprentices.

This programme, a first for Fife and for Scotland, will build on preparatory work undertaken through Fife Council’s Culture of Enterprise Framework to establish Scotland’s first formal Enterprise Apprenticeship Scheme. The apprentices will gain a high quality, recognised vocational qualification and develop enterprise skills whilst employed in a Fife business.

The aim is to embed a culture of enterprise in Fife by supporting young people to start and develop an enterprising career and inspire employers to deepen their engagement with schools making more room for young people in their organisation.

Two of the original apprentices - Shannen Scott and Nicola England - who started their training in 2012, have just completed their NVQ in Enterprising Skills in a Business Environment.

Cllr Lesley Laird, Executive Spokesperson for Business, Enterprise, Economy & Planning, said: “This is a unique programme in which young people are employed in roles to develop new products or services and to help grow an existing business. It’s a first for Fife and for Scotland and represents the importance our young people play in the local economy.”

Enterprise game gathers momentum THE Enterprise Game, a unique board game tailored to the Fife Economy and designed to infuse enterprise in the minds of local young people in a fun way, got off to a great start in 2014, with 499 local pupils taking part in January.

The success of the Game, which is part of Fife Council’s Culture of Enterprise Framework, is down to its ability to change attitudes towards business and entrepreneurship.

RICHARD Dixon has been appointed as Enterprise Champion for Fife Council Economic Development’s Culture of Enterprise Framework. Richard, who is the founder and CEO of Vets Now Ltd, will act as the link between the Partnership and current and emerging entrepreneurs in Fife, identifying the issues faced by them and creating opportunities to support them through these challenges.

Richard said: “This is an important role to ensure collaboration between Fife Council and entrepreneurs in Fife. By working closely together, we can identify any opportunities and challenges and act accordingly to grow a vibrant economy.”

Businesses and charities can both benefit from working together PARTNERING with a local charity can be hugely rewarding and is a great way for businesses to give something back to the local community.

Tu Edwards, Centre Fundraiser, Maggie’s Fife, said: “Companies who develop a partnership with a local charity, can give something back to the local community as well as benefit from networking and marketing opportunities. And, for employees, it can offer a morale boost.

“Annually, we provide practical, social and emotional support to over 8,000 people who have had their lives changed forever by a diagnosis of cancer. We do this with the support of local businesses, groups and individuals.”

Smith Anderson Ltd has committed to raise £5,000 a year, for three years, for The Centre. Its CEO, Michael Longstaffe, said: “As a philanthropic family owned company and having recently moved to Kirkcaldy, we are keen to work with the local community.

“We doubled our first year’s pledge to Maggie’s Fife to £10,000.

This is especially poignant as a large number of our 200 strong workforce, are directly or closely connected to those that benefit from the great work done at the Maggie’s Fife Centre.”

Corporate social responsibility: the benefits to businesses RECENT figures show that 88 per cent of consumers are more likely to buy from a company that supports and engages in activities to improve society (Better Business Journey, UK Small Business Consortium).

But what does that mean for businesses?

CSR is a company’s sense of responsibility towards the community and environment it operates in. It illustrates the company’s citizenship to their employees, community and customers and can bring significant benefits, for example, it can help win business, increase customer retention, differentiate your business from competitors, improve your business reputation and standing as well attract, retain and maintain a happy workforce and be an employer of choice.

There are many ways to improve your CSR. You may

choose to reduce your waste or pollution or get involved in community based activities, such as building partnerships with schools to help pupils with enterprise work and improving employability skills.

Showcasing Fife’s top businesses COUNCILLOR Laird, Executive Spokesperson for Business, Enterprise, Economy & Planning, recently visited Quaker Oats in Cupar, to find out more about the business and its plans for the future.

Quaker produces a range of products including the breakfast porridge. It has been milling oats for over a century, including at its main factory in Cupar where it currently employs 258 workers. The company also invests heavily in developing techniques in oat growing and emerging technologies in oat milling.

The visit is one in a series for Cllr Laird who has, over the past few months, met a number of companies in a range of sectors of industry, including Vets Now and Samsung Heavy Industries.

Councillor Laird said: “Fife Council is committed to supporting businesses in the region and making Fife the best place to do business.

“It’s been a fantastic opportunity for me to visit some of the businesses – big and small – which really help to showcase success and highlight just how many different types of business exist in Fife.

The Adamson looks to expand in 2014: Building on a successful formula SINCE launching 22 months ago, The Adamson, a family-run restaurant and cocktail bar in St Andrews, has gone from strength to strength and it isn’t resting on its laurels.

With a Fife Business Award in 2012 for the most enterprising start-up company under its belt; its chef, Scott Davies, a finalist in last year’s Masterchef: The Professionals; turnover up 10 per cent on last year; and welcoming over 900 guests a week; the company is looking to expand in 2014.

Scott’s Masterchef success, which saw him nicknamed ‘Mr Dependable’ by Michel Roux Jnr and Monica Galetti because of his consistently strong performance, was a fantastic accolade for the chef and for the business.

Julie Lewis, managing director at The Adamson, said: “I nominated Scott for Masterchef as I believed he had the right skills and creativity

to do well. He was superb and we’re all incredibly proud of him. It’s given the team such a boost.

“Scott has become a bit of a local celebrity too with lots of guests keen to meet him and congratulate him on his success. He’s even received fan mail from Canada and Australia. There’s such a buzz.”

Scott, who trained at Dundee College, has had a passion in cooking from an early age and by 26 had achieved three rosettes.

Scott, who in January was made a director at The Adamson, said: “I love everything about food and the dynamics of the industry; it never stands still so there is always lots to keep me busy and to continuously challenge me.

“It really important for me to create contemporary dishes with a strong seasonal influence and being based in Fife, I’m spoilt for choice in sourcing local produce.”

Scott’s talent, commitment and inspiration has been positive for the business which is looking to realise bigger ambitions this year.

Initial plans being considered are to expand The Adamson by creating a cocktail bar and private dining space, while also looking for premises in Edinburgh to increase its offering of good quality food, good service, comfortable surroundings and good prices.

Julie added: “Having been operational now for almost two years, we are in a position in which we feel we can take on that next challenge.”

Purvis innovates to improve distribution and storage in Fife LOCHGELLY based Purvis Group, a construction services business, has further diversified its operations with the creation of Purvis Storage and Distribution (PSD).

The business was launched in February with the aim of radically improving the distribution of goods to and from the Fife area, having joined forces with the UK’s premier pallet network, Palletline Plc. Further £1M for East of Scotland Investment Fund A further 25 businesses are to benefit from a £1m extension to the East Scotland Investment Fund (ESIF) by March 2015.

ESIF, launched as a £5m investment fund in 2011, has already assisted 67 companies as well as safeguarded or created around 1000 jobs.

Led by Fife Council Economic Development, the latest extension has been secured from the European Regional Development Fund to support the creation of new jobs and new market opportunities for small to medium sized companies.

The European money is added to the original £5m ESIF initiated by a consortium of ten local authorities with additional support from the Royal Bank of Scotland.

George Sneddon of Fife Council, and also Fund Chairman, welcomed the European funding. He said: “This additional money is vital to safeguard and create jobs, support businesses through this particularly difficult period and ensure that local economies benefit from successful businesses.

“Businesses can open up new market opportunities with some extra financial help. For a variety of reasons companies often need another source of funding and so far the Investment Fund has helped 67 companies with around £2.7m funding for

working capital and purchase of equipment, plant or business property. I’m delighted that jobs are being created and safeguarded as well as new products and new markets developed with the Fund’s help.”

Kirkcaldy based firm, Sephra Europe Ltd, has used financial support from the East of Scotland Investment Fund to aid its restructuring and expansion plans.

Its managing director, David Archer, said: “The loan from the East of Scotland Investment Fund has been important to speed up our restructuring plans. We had great support from Business Gateway Fife through the application process. Although it is different to the way the banks operate, the process ensures that companies have really analysed and understood their numbers and their projections.”

The chocolate fountain company is a recognised name in the catering world and now counts exports as 65 per cent of their business.

David added: “We operate in a highly competitive market place and so we aim to offer innovative new products to customers all over the world. Ensuring that the right business finance is in place means that we can expand to meet growing market demand.”

Joe Sture, Fife Chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses

JOE Sture was appointed as The Federation of Small Businesses’ (FSB) new Fife Chairman at the end of last year. Keen to hear more about his priorities for the year ahead, FBM caught up with Joe to find out more.

Joe, a business consultant, is focused on making a difference to the business community in Fife, believing that working in collaboration with business organisations and Fife Council, is key to creating opportunities and supporting smaller businesses.

FSB Fife is the largest business membership group in Fife, with over 1100 business members, so its role is important in understanding, gathering and helping to support the priorities of those small and medium sized businesses.

Joe said: “A large part of my role as Fife Chairman is to speak to our local members and to hear about their priorities and where they

need support. Our recent Small Business Index showed that business confidence is growing and there is intent to invest, so as part our activity, we are facilitating and showing our members a range of funding sources available, including alternatives to banks.

“Engagement and regular dialogue with a range of business groups, including the St Andrews Business Association and the Fife Chamber of Commerce, as well as Fife Council, is vital to ensuring we support the business sector. By working together on a range of projects we aim to revitalise our local high streets as well as maximise procurement opportunities for small and medium sized businesses.”

Joe set up Bennachie Associates ten years ago and amongst a range of projects, he is working with The Scottish Government to raise awareness of small businesses in the procurement process. Joe has been a FSB committee member for the last four years and will be Chairman of the Fife Branch until November 2014.

FSB represents 1100 small businesses in Fife RECENT research has shown the FSB to be Scottish politicians’ favourite source of business information. In an MSP survey conducted by PA Advocacy, 80 per cent ranked direct contact with organisations as their most useful source of information, and 91 per cent of them said that the most useful information source of all is the Federation of Small Businesses.

Gordon Henderson of FSB, explained why this information is useful. He said: “As the biggest direct member business organisation in the country, we represent nearly 20,000 small

independent business owners including around 1100 in Fife.

Unlike many other businesses organisations we are entirely independent, receiving no money from local or national government, so we can speak up without worrying about biting the hand that feeds us and our arguments are supported by the hard evidence provided by our members.”

Fife business brews up a storm THE recently opened brewery in Dunfermline has created a new chapter in Fife’s brewing history and a new venture for David Austin, owner and manager of Reubens Café and Wine Store.

David said: “I wanted to add a local beer to our wine store so contacted brewer, Douglas Ross, for help. It took just six weeks from that initial thought to the first bottle.

“Our Dunfermline Blond Ale is a nod to the town’s medieval brewing history and the name, de Brus, is taken from the ancient family name of Robert the Bruce. The bar gives a face to the product while the beers are brewed in the basement’s micro-brewery.”

In addition to advisory support from Business Gateway Fife, De Brus received a grant of £5,000 from Fife Council’s Fife Investment Fund towards the costs

of business development and the microbrewery installation.

David added: “Business Gateway Fife has supported my business improvement plans and helped me secure funding for the micro-brewery.

My adviser, Brian Blackburn, is very helpful and understands what I’m trying to achieve.”

The brewery boasts a large function room that hosts musical, private and corporate events. As well as de Brus beer, it offer ciders, also made on the premises, malts, wines and bar food.

ONE of Fife’s most dynamic food companies is the latest business to sign up to Hand Picked, the initiative that helps young people into jobs.

The Cress Company, which distributes speciality foods to outlets including farm shops, upmarket delis and garden centres, has joined

Hand Picked to help young adults prove their abilities through paid work experience.

Its first Hand Picked employee is working in the company’s customer service department.

Company founder Joe Wall said: “Young people bring ideas to any business, but without experience many get overlooked. If we want a skilled and effective workforce in the future we have to make sure the younger generation has a chance to learn and understand what holding down a job really means.

“Working with Hand Picked we are giving a young person who has found it difficult to find a job – whose CV is not quite as strong as others - a real opportunity to prove themselves.”

Hand Picked is a job creation initiative set up by Gerard Eadie CBE, chairman of CR Smith, to offer a form of ‘corporate parenting’ to young people finding it tough to get into full time employment.

Gerard Eadie CBE said: “The aim of Hand Picked is to help young adults who want to work, by providing a 12 week paid job. This gives them the opportunity to find out what it means to have a proper job and leave with a reference, the Hand Picked Passport, that will support their next job interview.”

Innovate Food marks 25th Anniversary with Secretary of State visit THE Rt Hon Alistair Carmichael MP, Secretary of State for Scotland visited Kirkcaldy-based food producer Innovate Foods to mark its 25th anniversary.

Mr Carmichael was accompanied by George Eustice MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for farming, food and marine environment for a tour of the facility and to meet staff.

The family firm, which currently produces in excess of 11 million portions annually for the UK foodservice sector and exports throughout the world has, over the last 12 months, expanded its presence in the international and retail markets.

Innovate Foods’ philosophy of using top quality ingredients is underpinned by over 70 years of experience in mushroom growing.

The company employs around 30 staff and produces an awardwinning range of delicious starters and appetizers from its state-ofthe-art production facilities in Kirkcaldy.
